Next up, Winter - night time navigation and NO sun. A bit of star gazing if the skies clear, but with cloud? I now have a few button compasses placed in all the bags I'm likely to pick up before leaving the house. Of course i have my Silva and a compass on my watch too - Where I live in the UK there's still a chance to get lost but you can find a main road around and signposts help. Out on the trail where you are, it's a whole world of hurt if you get it wrong; They should give you a show on HBO or something - best viewing all week.

I suppose for the Horizon Line Adjustment method, if you count the handbreaths from horizon to sun bottom (say 3 handbreaths = 45 degrees), and have a straight staff (Scout staff for example) that you hold at arm's length toward the sun, and stick it in the ground. That shadow can be used by placing your toes on the shadow edge, then, turning the left foot (if done in the morning) 45 degrees left, and aligning the right foot with the left, this would point your toes north (+/- 2 degrees). Inspiring stuff, Joshua, thanks.

Cool. Pro-tips. I really enjoyed this video and there is something to be said about having knowledge of primitive methods … it may impact your survival. A great follow up would be a quick video how to use the North star to navigate at night … either on the water via canoe or on foot across a an open expanse.

Interesting… Question? With this demonstration could you imagine that you were an airplane, just like runway numbers with the information that you just explained use this as a heading in any particular direction? With this in mind to making sure you were moving in the proper direction it would be like ATC checking our flight path which in turn you would stop every once in a while to check you heading numbers?

In the first instance, you say north south line when it is actually East west line, correct?
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret 2 года назад
What is actually showing is an E-W, yes. What I’m saying is that gives you your North South which is what I’m using the E-W to infer. Probably didn’t come out as clear as it could have I admit.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but say if you're lost in the woods, does knowing which way is north/south matter, if so, why? This is assuming you don't know what's around you of course.
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret 2 года назад
I’d say that if you didn’t know which direction you were trying to go to begin with, probably a significant contributor to becoming lost in the first place. To your point, if you were wandering around aimlessly to begin with, many times knowing how to find north won’t matter, you weren’t using directions to begin with.

how do you adjust your calculations taking in account the time of the year, winter, summer and your actual location in eg northern hemisphere what I mean is the farther north you go the day and night get either much longer or shorter than 12 hrs depending on time of the year?
@junkinthebrain
@junkinthebrain 2 года назад
I live in Wisconsin, so I was also wondering about this also. In the winter we have pretty short days where the sun goes down at 5:00. There aren't 12 hours of light, so would this still work?

Great Video! Can you explain the second method please? I don't see how the angle to the horizon(sky ascension) can help you get a direction. To me, you can only use this kind of method in combination with time. Then you can account for angular change in regard to noon. 15°/hour as you explained.

"As the sun APPEARS to arc across the sky." Appearances can be deceiving an it appears this mans aware. Just know people, the earth doesn't move an the sun is never "under" you. Thats just dumb.
@Lumpy_Peter
@Lumpy_Peter 2 года назад
I've always wondered how usable are techniques like the second one for people living at higher latitudes, like me. Does the length of the day play a role? The differences are quite extreme between winter (6:25 h) and summer (18:15 h). In the summer suns sets on the much shallower trajectory, so already the technique of measuring by outstretched arm how much time you have left until the sun sets is quite inaccurate.
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret 2 года назад
I’m in the ADK mountains and can confirm it’s accurate for about the first three hours and last three hours during the winter. The sun sort of levels off and isn’t (appearing to go) any higher after that, just arcing straight across for the most part so it doesn’t give you any additional input on the measurement above the horizon like because of it
@junkinthebrain

@pridntfant
@pridntfant 2 года назад
Currently we have 14:45 hours in a day, how do you change your approach? This means that 180 divided by 14:45 = 12.46degrees not 15. Anyway when i did the measurement the sun was about 5 hands up and when i looked at the clock it was exactly 5hours past sunrise, but when i turned my feet 75degrees (5*15degrees = 75) i was waaaay off south... I just cannot get my hand around what i am doing wrong... Hope someone can help...

Why are you using your thumb when deciding sun to horizon when each finger is 15 min.. your way is 1hour + 15min. Because of your thumb, dont use your thumb & your figures will be more precise. 😎🍺⚓🇺🇸
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret 2 года назад
Remember that not all fingers are the same size so we can’t really say 4 fingers is the standard any more than 4 fingers and a thumb are. Your fingers and mine are different sizes. My pinky is not as fat as the others, so is one finger really 15 minutes? Can’t be unless all fingers are equal. Not to mention some people look at their fingertips and some look closer to the palm, both measure differently. Either way, there isn’t really a lot of precision in field expedient methods. Compasses are precise, fingers aren’t 👍
