Hello everyone, my name is Duong.
I am 32 years old.
I live in a poor mountainous area of Vietnam.
From a young age, I had to work hard to help my parents.
Difficult life is always around, I work and learn everything from my grandparents and the old people in the village.
Gradually, I mastered the skills.
5 years ago, I decided to live the challenge.
Determined to learn about the primitive way of life, I chose to live in the wilderness, alone.
Where there's no technology and forcing yourself to pass, it feels great!
How about you? Your life is definitely different from mine.
Have fun watching the video!

I remember about a year ago, you posted that your cotton experiment had failed, and I poked fun at you because you seemed to have underestimated the amount of work it takes to make a shirt. Now you're here with cotton in abundance, creating a self-styled primitive spinning wheel from nothing but wood, bamboo and string! I love how you proved me wrong! Respect, Duong.

It would be good to add some dirt around your concrete floor. It is being under cut by the rain drips from the roof line. This will eventually weaken enough that it will crack your floor. Just a few inches of clay packed around the edges will help the water run away from the building and prevent further erosion under the floor.

For those who don't quite understand how the cotton is being turned into thread, the fibers are first rolled into a column (yarn-like thing) then wrapped around that long dark stick, the spindle. When the spindle spin (thanks to the turning of the great wheel it's attached to, the yarn might just get wrapped around the spindle and not twist, but the key lies in guiding it to the tip of the spindle at an angle. It then "slips off" the spindle's tip, and that causes the fibers to twist, locking them together. It also puts a lot of torque on the thread being spun. That torque is partially relieved by 'backing up the wheel" a little so you can guide the yarn back up to the spindle sheath (so it can easily be pulled off the spindle without losing its spot and thus getting tangled), but also by stretching out the thread and fiber bundle so that more fibers are pulled (with a twist) from the untwisted bundle. It's an experiment you can replicate with a spinning stick (chopstick, drinking straw, whatever), a bit of thread or ribbon (it's very clear how the twist happens with a flat ribbon), and by wrapping the ribbon so that as you turn the spindle, the ribbon "slips off" the end rather than rolling up flat and neat.

some minor changes that might make things easier for the cotton seed extraction: attach a basket to the frame on the side where the cotton seeds fall so that you don't have to pick them up later, and maybe have a ramp or chute on the side the cotton falls out on to guide it onto the basket on the side where the processed cotton comes out instead of dropping it straight down.
@johns6014
@johns6014 Год назад
It would probably also be good to get some ground braces mounted onto the top of the frame, ideally in both forward and back. The lard helped a lot, but you can tell that there's a lot of force that's still acting on the frame when the crank is turned, and the leg supports that he has now aren't going to work for it in the long run.
@The_Foreman
@The_Foreman Год назад
Only problem with a ramp would be a lack of smooth materials of the right size. Bamboo is probably the closest, but he couldn't weave it else the cotton would catch. Iron could work, but between being pitted and rust, it would still catch (and be a large resource cost). I just don't think a ramp would be worth the extra effort. A seed basket though would probably be fine.
@johns6014
@johns6014 Год назад
@@The_Foreman There **may** be a case for getting a plank as smooth as possible, then polishing it with sand on a river stone. I've never done anything like that before though, so I don't know how well it would work, but it's possible in theory. However, a ramp faces another issue, in that it would catch the seeds as well, which would hinder flow unless they were cleared out, which in turn would require similar effort to what the ramp is meant to negate. A ramp on the output would likely be a good idea, though. It wouldn't need to be smooth, it would just need to provide some transit to the basket, so that the cotton isn't falling into the dirt. Alternatively, a basket underneath both sides of the press would work well.
@The_Foreman
@The_Foreman Год назад
@@johns6014 A ramp on the output was the initial suggestion. Issue being if it gets caught on anything, the lightweight cotton would then build up and need to be shoved into the receiving plate anyway. However on the note of an input ramp, setting aside the ramp's smoothness, a small gap between the ramp and the rollers would work fine to allow the seeds to drop below.

Hi buddy. I think to prevent chickens from flying into your garden you need to trim some of their wing feathers so they can't fly over the fence. It is not an operation that causes pain to the animals and the feathers will be able to grow back, but to do so scissors would be needed, I think with a knife it is very difficult. Keep it up, I love your videos.

duong ! thanks for the videos. bamboo is a grass or broad leaf weed family member not a tree ;] you need to do somthing with the water supply as it is your water wheel has no power because there is only about 1 foot of head. with POWER run a sawmill and lathe to process wood ...power a blower for forge and kiln....dry your food in the kiln and a stamp mill to process food or ore.
@mobiousenigma
@mobiousenigma Год назад
@@Lauradicus i know...he dosnt use them though because it hasnt got the power needed to do work,,,using the grind stone stalls the wheel... the wheel has none of its potential horse power because of 2 things ...his water pipe is not sealed and will not hold pressure.. the second is the resivior at the bottom , it is open topped water flows in and fills it then overflows ...the height from overflow to wheel is called "head" there is only a foot or so to power the wheel when he could have the 30 to 100 feet it is from the wheel to the river above. that amount of power is usable what he has now is not. he is smart and will get around to it in time i suspect. in the long run a functioning power source saves him time effort and boredom of repetitious labor

For a first try, this is really good! You'll want to grease all moving parts where they intersect each other, same as for your cotton gin. You might also want to try brushing out the cotton more evenly in density. It's clumping as you spin it into thread (the clumps are called slubs) because the unspun cotton itself is not evenly distributed through its mass. The denser it is, the more it will tangle quickly rather than evenly. Making carding combs / brushes by hand is very difficult, though, I know! About the only thing I can suggest is maybe using boar bristles and some hoof & rawhide glue to make brushes that you can brush past each other, or carving a couple of combs that are sized to slot past each other, and just taking the time to comb the fibers to an even appearance. (That's a good task to do by the warmth of a fire, but you have to be careful with cotton, because a spark can ruin your work & your day! Wool will smolder and go out, but cotton can catch on fire.)

2:00 Because there is only one wall to protect the garden, the chickens have two other directions they can go to to get to the garden. The garden should be surrounded on at least three sides if not four. If the garden is fully contained then the only way they can get into it is by flying over, in which case it would be possible to make a small screen up top too, to make it covered by five sides. Time-consuming yes, but fully protected in case there was no other options. It doesn't seem impossible that they are simply walking around the pond and coming from the other direction, or going around the back of the property and walking past the initial fence to get in from the thicker bush and treeline. 37:40 I wonder if he will make a sheet or thin mat to sleep on or to keep himself warm in the colder days. Either one would be good for him. 👍

Chickens LOVE disturbed soil! I suggest 2 things. 1. Create a “chicken garden” - an area that is tilled / dug , and then planted with seeds of grains or vegetables that they like. 2. Make a fence on the 2 sides away from from the pond. The pond side should be okay since chickens tend to fly in a straight line, but the other 2 sides make access easy for them. They’ll just simply walk around the current fence. I don’t think they are flying over the fence, as they tend to fly up to the top of a fence and then fly down, and there’s no way to land on the fence you made. By the way, the fence is AWESOME, it just needs to be longer.

I wondered why you didn't use the water wheel for the seed separator but I do know that would have been more work to set up. One thought I had which might not work is to coat the water wheel in concrete so that it doesn't rott as fast. You could use cotton fiber as a binder in the concrete.
