Right on. I planted some gourds last summer when you put the video out. Had about thirty on the vines. Due to all the rain and humidity, most of them were lost to mold and fungus. I have four left that are still drying up in the rafters in my garage. They have some surface mold on them, but I think they’re ok. Can’t wait to get your book. Thanks.🤙🏻

It's really important to have a water container because especially in the middle of the summer when everything's hot you gotta be hydrated to keep moving our ancestors have been using those water containers for a long time and that's what made voyages and longer travels easier, great video All the best,Wild Wisdom is such great book I presume just like Scavenger and Eartroamer

Does the gourd dry out on its own or do you have to do something to prevent it from rotting before it dehydrates?

George Stewart, a well-known Colorado knapper and former Federal Hunter, once showed me a water container made from a dried buffalo's bladder. He stated that he learned to make them from a Native American friend. (They start out water-proof. 🙂) He's been deceased many years but was a great source of survival skill knowledge.

There's a New Testament line I've never understood about how you can't make fresh wine in old (skins, or bottles) because at the time wine was made in amphoras and those are ceramic. And pricey. Bottles at the time were the size of airplane liquor bottles and really common and their shards are still all over the place.* When you started filling those gourds with wax, what if you didn't have so much wax but you had lots of resin? You could brew wine in gourds and as you said gourds would probably only last through one brewing but that's ok, gourds are cheap. If you wonder what such wine would taste like they still make it in Greece. It's called retsina. The NT passage could be about home brew. *Remember "Throw your net on the other side of the boat"? Those glass bottles are all green. With flat bottoms. If someone looked through several of them the light would be polarized. Jesus could see the fish.

Dang I wish I got this before the drawing I love watching this I wish I could live in the mountains and live off the land me and my grandma and grandpa did when I was a kid they raised me I feel like I don’t fit in with people my age and society the way it is today. I will give anything to go on a trip in the outback with you man that would be awesome and learn some new traits but I will be getting that book.

I love how long it takes to accomplish these primative tasks. It proves that people back than really got it... living is not facebook posts and youtube. And a water bottle would have definatly been a prized possesion. Not something they left the cave without :)

In Central America there are trees called Jicaro that have a thing like a gourd that the indigenous people have used for a long time. You can find different sizes and shapes on different trees, some are more round and others are elongated. You can find dried ones with art carved into the skin for sale as souvenirs but people use them still around local homes. They can be cantines or bowls or whatever, like a gourd but with a different shape. The pronunciation of jicaro is like he-car-o, with a little accent on the E. I don't know if you can find any but you would probably enjoy making stuff out of them if you can get any. Edit, it's called a calabash tree in English and it's medicinal too, according to Google.

You ever use brewer's pitch to seal instead of wax? It melts at a higher temperature, whis is useful for hot climates.

Hmm, it looked like this things can be very useful for crafting a lot of stuff. Maybe a seal with linseed oil could help with really hot days in the sun, but would take a while to cure.

Excellent video Donny, instead of pottery these gourds were storage vessels.

I grow the cavemans club variety. They might not be best for water but they are fun and massive.

I've grown various gourds. The cool thing about them is they can be shaped with simple forms. . Not a primitive method but I use about a 18" of chain painted and rolled in sand for the clean out. i started with wild birdhouse gourds like yours that I found in the desert.

If anyone doesn't care as much about doing it purely historically, a snake cam would be great for inspecting the interior. They make them for inspecting rifle barrels, and they're probably some for doing work on electronics and stuff.

Better than using wax I just boil water and let it sit a while. I do this 3-4 times and it leaches all the bitterness out from the gourd. Wax has a tendency to break loose with hot temperatures so I think my way is better.

Theyre great. Ive got tons.my mom used to do crafts. I used to make bongs. But since then ive used many and still have tons.

I made mine using water and ash to rotten the interior "meat", and some pebbles to sand it, along with a stick to poke it a bit.

What happens if you don’t have wax? Are there other natural coatings? Pine pitch makes sense but I assume it’s too molten gooy to swash around.
