In this video I talk about the newest episode of Disney's Primos, "The Summer of Tater-Luna" I also talk about the first 9 episodes that dropped on Disney + and the future of the show!
I think i got swept up in a desire to hate the show that mightve just be poorly veiled xenophobia from self hating brown folks that were mad about a single characters nickname hhhhh L me
@@Yumichan-mn5yk Is literally racism the show, its very ofensive for them, they souldnt said it was a Latino representation, but a Xicano one, Walt will be proud, i think he hated them other than jews.
This episode is such a perfect commentary on the art world. Whether you're an amateur getting mocked for your doodles, an architecture student trying to win over a crit panel, or a professional illustrator revising commissions for a client; it's all the same experience of wanting to express your creative desires while also hoping to satisfy or exceed the expectations of others
Huh. That actually doesn’t seem too bad. I remember how badly this show got slammed when it was first revealed, but if the show is really as improved as some people are saying, maybe I oughta give it a shot.
Yknow after all the backlash the show got, I assumed it would just be a show that would exist and I’d never watch. But the fact that the show is actually kind of heartwarming and teaches kids valuable lessons through Tater and her cousins…idk maybe I could watch it when I have the time. Glad some people are giving it a chance Also this earned a subscription from me
The mere fact that Primos got so much backlash from the entire Internet only to emerge as a legitimately well-liked show cements once and for all that DTVA is untouchable in the cartoon community. And I am very conflicted about that
@@bluebellsforever I’m conflicted because all that cooking comes at the cost of the majority of the shows being able to stand out from each other, and I’m shocked that no one has ever done anything about it. And I’m not trying to be a hater; I like some of their shows - DuckTales 2017 is one of my favorite shows in general, I love the Mickey Mouse shorts almost as much, and I have a lot of respect for Molly McGee, but on the other hand, I just can’t with Amphibia and Owl House because of how *incredibly* similar they are, shared universe or not, and I was able to predict (almost) everything that happened in Hailey’s on It without even watching it just based upon how they handle their stock supply of tropes and situations. And even with Molly McGee, it took me quite some time to say I actually vibed with it, to the point where I only became a true fan shortly before it ended. And again, I am shocked that nobody has ever said or done anything about it - in fact, everyone embraces it, when I think deep down we all desire more creativity in the entertainment industry. Why should DTVA be the exception, the one that everyone says “if it’s you, it’s okay?”
@@bullmonty764 I mean amphibia is pretty bad, I don't like it that much. Owl house is peak tho. It doesn't bother me that they're similar cuz 1 show is good and the other show is bad. I think it's because DTVA are some of the only guys (other than Pixar) who get creative freedom and don't have the executives breathing on their necks 24/7, so they can make good shows without much compromise.
@@bluebellsforever It’s funny because my opinion on the two is actually the reverse of yours - I’d like Amphibia more than Owl House specifically because the former came first. I think the problem came when Dana asked Matt if she could copy his homework and he said, “Sure, just don’t make it obvious.” Metaphorically speaking of course. But to be fair to Owl House, it does have stronger LGBTQ+ representation (whereas Amphibia usually either kept things ambiguous or saved it for the last possible second in the case of Lady Olivia and Yunan) and a more believable redemption arc (probably because imo Amity is redeemed much more realistically than Sasha) so it does have those going for it. Again, no drama intended, and yes, having creative freedom is always a great thing; I just wish they used it to be more experimental on occasion. Good talk 👍
The lesson in this episode is truly what I needed today as an artist. Can relate with what the producers had to go through. Nice that this show is doing great!
This show's controversy about the intro wouldn't have lasted that long if Myrna Velazco (Tater's VA) stayed with her mouth shut (and the pitch bible didn't help)... Now we are greeted upon a quite decent show (or a forgettable mess depending on each person's perspective) that I'm glad found its audience, people who were able to give it a second chance and now genuinely enjoy it, it's honorable; maybe this isn't for everyone, but for that tiny part of people they pleased, it's all worth it. (I'm personally in the middle, now considering it a decent, entertaining show but nothing truly spectacular [with the occasional raise-in-quality gem here and there such as this one for example] yet being far from the abhorrent monstrosity it appeared to be, blame that on Disney IG.) LOVELY VIDEO, MATEY, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!! 💖💖💖
The show did reach an audience but surprsingly in some latin american countries it is still hated (In peru a show made by a concrete company as propaganda was more succesfull)
It isn't a show that I'd personally watch, but I love that it isn't just an ordinary mostly boring show - It can be totally perfect for someone and also pretty good, interesting, rather unique too.
Tater’s sona reminded me a lot of Anne from Amphiba andd the whole fight sequence between her and the chimera of all the primo’s ideas reminded me of Anne vs King Andrias, man do I miss amphibia
I needed to see this. Just because a show is hit with controversy, doesn't mean it can't pick itself back up and rise once more. If the creators simply gave up on their vision and left, _then_ I'd write Primos off as a failure.
Woooow I can't believe this show turned out to be that good ! I think this is one of the examples how to make a show not only representating other cultures but having a good lore As an aspiring artist, this episode hits hard I had a problem with other people's expectations like a year ago and abandoned the project I really liked Now I'm doing an animation and I'll surely remember this episode :)
Jorge Gutierrez, creator of El Tigre and Book of Life was endorsing this show to the end and people were telling him that it was problematic. I'm so so happy to know that it actually worked out and that his support was justified.
I honestly got my faith and support up as soon as I investigated about the creators opinion akd view of her show… most people comited the mistake of judging it because of the voice actor… who did say questionable things… but the creator of the show actually anf genuinely showed to be willing to listen and change all of the things people disliked… she actually showed love for her show and explained that even the things people critized weren’t done on bad intentions… as it was her experience living there
That’s actually true. I mean Loud house’s early episodes, characters like Lola and Lori we’re really b*tch, But in modern loud house they make them bit more sympathic but loud house is still midecore.
I wish I create my Nickelodeon original movie Mariala and it's about a teenage girl named Mariala Mariala who discovered that she came from a maternal line of witches and she decided to save her coastal lousiana town from the cursed villagers that accused her ancestor of witchcraft in colonial mexico
I saw this episode with my younger cousins last Saturday and surprisingly resonated with it. I heard a lot of hate for the Primos show online, so when I saw the show pop up on TV, I was kinda expecting to hate it as well. But while watching the "Summer of Tater Luna" episode, it kinda got to me. As an artist, animator, and story writer, I really want to make my own series that everyone could love and enjoy. While I do try and take some criticisms for my own projects and story writing, sometimes I let it get to my head. If it festers too much, it usually gets to the point where I feel like no matter what I do with my story it's just not going to work out and feel tempted to scrap it entirely. But sometimes I have to be reminded that I can't always please everyone. Not everyone will like it, but as long as I trust in my ideas and feel happy about my work, I can keep going. I can accept notes and criticisms from time to time if I need help, but I shouldn't let them hinder my creativity, rather try to expand on it and make it work. So... I may give this show a try. I was iffy at first, but honestly? It makes me wish I had something like this when I was younger. I would've needed the extra pep-talk 🫶
As an artist currently having a hard time trying not to be a perfectionist when it comes to my drawings, I say to Primos, “Perhaps I treated you too harshly.”
Was curious to see how the show would do with anime references especially having Christina Vee (Sailor Mars in Sailor Moon) as part of the cast. I know the show is based on the summer the creator spent with her cousins and for the Spanish speaking community, back then they were hardcore into anime even when it was niche in the 90s. So having an episode like this is pretty sweet and also we know that Natasha will be looking forward to Uzumaki anime next month. And love the little Ranma 1/2 with the anime reboot coming this month
Nicely done! Solid breakdown. As a cast member it's nice to see the show getting some love. We worked on this show for four years. The last year has been an interesting experience for sure.
@@tuberoy70 Haha, awesome! If you ever want to come on to the channel, I would love to interview you about Fetch, Jellystone, Primos, or anything else you want to talk about!
I haven’t watched Primos at all, but this specific episode reminds me of a Pinky Malinky episode (on Netflix) where the main characters attempt to make the perfect video, and use notes from their class, but in the end become burnt out and realize that the original was better on the end. I wonder if there are any other similar plots in other shows?
Forgot which one but an episode in Big City Greens talks about hot Tilly (second main character) tries to put on a play for the people in the line for the actual theater and changes the entire script just for the audience and ends up realizing nothing makes sense
I can't even tell you how much I appreciate your take/review on this show. Every other reviews I find, even from youtubers I usually like, either made out like the show was mabey never a problem, OR didn’t even understand what criticisms ppl actually had with the show. You listed to Hispanic/latino people's complaints, took them seriously AND recognized that some changes were good/necessary. Now you've highlighted the positive aspects of the show without pretending that it was always a show that was simply wrongly ridiculed. Growing up, it was impossible to find ppl who weren't super rasist to me or my latino/mexican family members, much less cared about representation or if it was good or bad. It's still a long way to normalizing good/positive latino rep in media, but having people like you around who actually listened and spread the message is a good start to getting there.
Well ths show still has a bit backlash like the fact that a character is named nacho, the fact that the title was Oye Primos instead of Oigan Primos and the fact it was terremoto hights
@@kittiesandbotsgemini9892 All of these issues have either been explained or resolved: • Nacho and Nachito is short for Ignacio, which is the name of the two Nachos’ father. Nellie even pointed out that they have the same name. • This show is supposed to be from Tater’s perspective and we learn she’s not the best at Spanish, so to have her sing “Oye, Primos” instead of “Oigan, Primos” makes total sense. • Terremoto Heights was problematic on the surface, but once you realize the show takes place in Los Angeles, not Mexico (both places have frequent earthquakes, the former was where the series creator grew up in) then it makes sense. The creator recognized the mistake and changed the name to Hacienda Hills, naming the town after the area her beloved grandmother lived, Hacienda Heights.
@@Yumifreak3 us latinos have a saying, if you were born in the US and never lived here, youre not one of us, also oye Primos would be like saying helou couzyns
Ok this is a pretty good in terms of writing. Heck! It's a nice reference to artists and what they go through. Considering I grew up on magical girls shows and action shows
First Inside Out 2 had that animation studio controlled by Anxiety and now Primos have this. After Wish came out, I feel like everyone is bashing on it for being a vision so compromised that it became a failure.
Yknow something Ive noticed.. I think when people see a video saying how bad something is, EVERYONE starts joining on hating it, that’s internet influence, but you have such an incredible perspective on life to see the positive side of things and now people are starting to like the show, because you influenced us, and that’s amazing, your amazing New sub man, keep having that positive perspective on life 🙏💜
One of my favorite things about this episode was the song, Di Tu Verdad (Be True to You in English.) One of the biggest messages society enforces this year alone is being true to one's truest, most authentic self. This kind of thing applies to EVERYBODY; whether you're an artist, a writer or even someone just going through the motions of life. It can be difficult to remain true to yourself lately due to so many people insisting we behave this way, that way or another way. But no matter what, NO ONE can be a better you...than you
Why is it that Sailor Moon, My Neighbor Totoro, Dragon Ball, and Pokémon are frequently parodied in Western animated shows, while other anime series like Ranma 1/2, Digimon, and Detective Conan rarely receive the same treatment? It seems that despite how many young people claim that anime is superior and epic, Western shows often only pay homage to the most mainstream series. This suggests that the influence of anime on Western media is somewhat limited to a few prominent examples.
I've spotted a Ramna ½ reference in MLP:Friendship is Magic before, and Lego Monkie Kid and Rise of the TMNT are filled to the brim with references to shows like One Punch Man, Kill la Kill, JJBA, and Gurren Lagann, on top of the more topical references to stuff like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball. (And even then, the Dragon Ball references in Monkie Kid are a lot more subtle than just having a character go Super Saiyan.) Iirc the animation style for those two shows was directly inspired by Studio Trigger. Edit: The Owl House also had a Little Witch Academia reference iirc
To think I thought this show was just gonna be meh, while the whole backlash was going on. I honestly liked it even if it didn’t really reach the highs of Disney Channels other recent cartoons. Remember what they say, “Never judge a book by its cover.”
Okay, as an artist I like this moral of doing what you like and not what others like! Every artist should follow this lesson. I've had a few times where someone I considered a friend gave me the opinion when I gave hair to non-human characters, but after a while I did it anyway.(I'm no longer friends with that person)
I agree. I tend to accept other people's notes about my art and jot them down whenever I may need them for future refrence. Like the episode said it's ok to accept criticism from others just as long as you know how to utilize it to your best advantage while staying true to your original ideas.
I agree w that, but to be fair the pilot had a lot of disrespectful, racist, stereotypical things that didn't represent Latin America (or Mexico in this case) as promised in its ''promotion'' and tater's VA also said some questionables things. However the controversy wasn't even a big deal, almost everyone just laughed their asses off. 🤷♂
@@chefrogg_they're in North America😭 after the backlash they literally had to add in so many signs and them literally screaming in our face they're in North america because people just assumed it was in Latin America
@@SkullZie Ohhhhh, to be honest I didn't knew that lol. But that assumption was justified bc of all of the mexican stereotypes that they used, even if it is set in North America tater's family is still represented as a Mexican-American family with Mexican culture, but it was a bad representation IN GENERAL (at least it was in the pilot). Still I think the controversy is funny, but I can also understand why some people where mad or why it wasn't so well received. Now that the show is out I think everyone should see the bad things as well as the good things that the show has bc in my opinion it is no longer just the gringo show with some funny Mexican ''representation'' that it used to be.
I wasn't going to watch Primos originally, but my dad put it on for my baby sister and I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would! It's definitely not perfect, but it is an enjoyable watch *in my opinion!*
IM SO GLAD PEOPLE ARE DEFENDING THIS SHOW NOW THAT ITS ACTUALLY OUT!!!! I always thought it was cruel that people were dumping on this show for so long since before it was even made bc they misunderstood things about it and now it has its chance to defend itself!!
I had a feeling that there’d be something redeemable under the veneer of this show’s initial marketing flop. I hope they can keep their game up like this.
I used to hate my art and writing for being, at its truest, so niche that nobody understood or noticed it. Then I gave up and started making whatever I wanted, and while nobody noticed me as an artist, academics I knew started pushing that I take my “research” and go back to college. It’s my 3rd semester since then and I’m so happy in academia. I’m hoping to work in archaeological reconstruction.
This episode looks really good, and I really like the message. I feel like when artists are young everyone is telling them what to change or what to improve and even if they try to help it can be very disheartening. I remember the very first thing my creative writing teacher told me in highschool was to take in all criticism but you decide what stays and what goes. I’m glad we’re having an episode like this. Also I love the backgrounds of the final battle. Likes that’s not even imitation those are straight up sailor moon backgrounds which is so cool
This reminds me of whenever me and my sister draw and ask our parents what they think. They just ask whether we like it, and if we do, they say that's all that matters :) Or else it's something like a commission or smth
This is a very good video! Also, just wanted to let you know that manga is pronounced “mahn-guh”, not “mang-uh”, and “june-gee ee-toe”, instead of “eye-toe”. No hate though and I’m excited to see more of your videos! :D
@@shoopydoopy No worries, I totally get it! It just takes some getting used to, since it doesn’t really sound the way it looks. I hope you have a good day! :]
Trust me. Shit like this has been happening ever since the 2010's era of cartoons began. Just look at shows like Clarence and Uncle Grandpa. Those shows were HATED at the beginning for whatever reason but over time they became fan favorites.
I'm still not _really_ a fan of the shape language and color palette, but I'll admit: this episode pleasantly surprised me. And it's nice to have some rare _good_ news out of Disney anymore, what with this episode and the news of "Inside Out 2" become the new highest-grossing animated film. Like... not bad, guys. Can you keep the momentum _going_ tho, is the question...
I've feeling lukewarm before about Primos for a while because I felt like the show hadn't had a good hook yet. But I think this episode might be the hook that I'm looking for, or at least develop into one, to convince myself to check out the whole series soon
This reminds me so much of mlp fim. Like, where Rarity in the first season wanted to make dresses for her friends for the Gala and everyone thought they knew better than her, after seeing the dresses Rarity had designed first on her own. Everyone then gave requests and had to learn the hard way, that sometimes, if a friend makes something for you, you should not have criticism about it, especially if it's a gift. Similar vibes
I still haven’t even seen primos yet, and already tater Luna seems like a very good episode. And it also made me feel relatable because as someone who loves to draw, I get tater’s passion for drawing. And it’s sad how she started to lose her passion because of how her cousins didn’t like her ideas. But just like her mom said, you’ll never be able to please everyone, and that’s ok. As long as your ideas make you happy and have fun, that’s important, and eventually there will be people who will love your ideas 😄 I guess this show was being hated way too harsh. Yes, some things that were done and said in the intro were just awful, but I’m glad that the show’s crew took notes and edited it to make it less offensive, so good on them 😊
Lost interest in Disney's projects after The Owl House's cancellation but I might take a look at Primos someday. Thank you for making this video. It's nice to see that they made such a nice episode about artists and their dreams and obstacles.
I like watching Primos on Disney+ and it's my second favourite Disney animated TV series My top 8 are 1. Phineas and Ferb 2. Primos 3. Recess 4. Mickey Mouse Works 5. DuckTales-reboot 6. The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh 7. Fish Hooks 8. Gravity Falls
