I saw Larry Lalonde in 86 when he was in Possessed. He was 15. it was a trip back then seeing someone backstage my age. He was already tearing it up back then. Luckily he got himself into a band where he could truly explore his talent. Another funny little piece of Primus meeting metal trivia .Less tried out for Metallica after Cliff Burton died it was an open audition in San Francisco. I guess he wasn't good enough.
Chase Tams, be Serious! These are 'Gifted Pop Stars'... If they were given a year to learn an 8 minute Mahavishnu Orchestra track, most of the notes would be off, and none of the band can read complex sheet music. With Mahavishnu, even the drummer reads music. I like the videos though. - I really tried with Les, to get him to learn from a band I manage - a combo with two basses doing the lead work (The Frillyboys). We all read music, so it's a great bonus. Anyway, Les does make it to some of our gigs (when Irma lets him) and we've had some great jam sessions, - but we keep to simple stuff, like covers of Led Zep and Gong if Les is playing. Sorry to rant on, Amig/Amica but jazz has always had the best musicians - and we play thrash jazz rock! Peace n Love. Eddie.

Everyone's talking about how this song is really hard to play on the bass and I'm just here in awe at how fast he spits out those lyrics with such a good eloquence, I keep stuttering every line x)
Not to mention that he sings this song AND plays the bass when its played live. Learning the bass line was hard enough for me but learning the lyrics and singing them at the same time is just too much.

Larry is the perfect guitarist for the bass heavy/connective voyage. Herb is my dood on drums for sure though too. Both musicians got it. And by that I mean the Claypool portal. Lightning in a bottle.
Herb tends to be strangely overlooked. He is an amazing drummer. If Les Claypool didn’t happen to be the best bassist in modern rock, Herb would surely steal the show. Larry Lalonde is a great guitarist and perfect for this band, but I wouldn’t name him in the top 100 rock guitarists of all time, whereas herb would rank somewhere on my top 100 rock drummers of all time. Top 50 maybe.
Actually, Flea is about as good as Les Claypool, just a more traditional, funky sound. So they’re about tied. Not counting any jazz fusion, just straight rock.

Both my older brothers got me into this band. First time I heard this song, I was about 8 years old (41 now), I didn't know what Les and Tom were saying, but it made me laugh.
There is no greater testament to the awesomeness of the 90's then the fact that Primus was actually a thing. Like they actually got played on MTV and Mainstream radio. Only in the 90's could this have happened.
Being born in 2008 was the 2nd biggest mistake of my life. I only listen to 3 bands who formed after 2002 and they are all inspired by older bands. Mainstream music just sucks now man.
To truly appreciate Primus you have to see them live. Its on a different level. No elaborate stage props. Just some psychedelic lighting, movie with clips from Primus videos mixed in playing behind the stage, and Primus funk metal ripping insanely. Occasionally Les makes a well delivered humorous quip in-between. Its a bucket list type of show.
I took the advice and saw them live. At 25 in 2022, I can say Primus was the first band I’ve seen live. I was a lot closer than I thought the tickets were from the map of venue. They put on an amazing show. Hearing them and seeing their finger movements in real time was something else. I can definitely agree with this comment.
I saw them twice once in Wilmington NC at a small venue of 1200. In the videos of it on RU-vid you can see me raging. Then in Atlanta at sweetwater fest. Good times.
Why did I just realize Primus has songs called “Tommy the Cat” and “Jerry was a Racecar Driver”... Tom...Jerry... Toms a cat, Jerry’s always racing away... coincidence? I think not.
You may say whatever you want about Primus, but you can say the feelign you get when listening to Primus is quite unique. When you listen to a sad song, you shiver. If a song is funky or upbeat, you groove, you move. And when you listen to Primus... It's weird.

You gotta love these music videos there made so well almost all of them have a different art style. Primus is in my opinion is more of a art piece than anything with the music and the videos it all comes together to make a masterpiece
I remember seeing this once back in 91 when I was 10 years old, and being completely and totally gobsmacked and confused by it. It was nothing like the airy synth-pop/pop-rap that was still everywhere. I'd never seen it since until it was uploaded here on the RU-vids a while ago. One of those fuzzy memories that stayed with you as a kid.
I'm a relatively new Priumus fan, and after listening to them for a year or so I've realised how influential they've been. It's insane, and I don't think people appreciate them as much as they deserve. Bands like Korn, RATM, Tool or SOAD wouldn't sound the same without Primus. It's insane how ahead of their time these guys were.

There's a misconception that you need to be on drugs to listen to and create music. It's a myth! Primus didn't do drugs. They liked beer/wine and some cannibus. But they(Les & Ler) said that recreational use was not directly involved in their music writing. Of course their was an indirect effect, but any experience we have will have indirect effects on our personalities. Saying musicians are on drugs to make music is an ignorant lie/rumor. I'm a musician. Rule #1 when it comes to recording or playing live music is DON'T SHOW UP STONED! Maybe the Ramones were stoned when they played, but any real musician won't be. The Ramones were bad musicians and songwriters. So yeah, maybe they were stoned all the time. That would explain it, but Hendrixes band, "the Experience", said that it was totally untrue that he played while stoned or tripping. It would be impossible to play at such a high(no pun) level. The rumor about Hendrix came from ignorant fools. Sure he like drugs in his recreational personal life, but he was sober in recordings and live shows according to his bandmates. Oh. I have been listening and buying Primus albums since the start, but have come to have a greater appreciation for them in recent years and how great they are still churning out new gems to come in 2022.
I dated a girl for about a month. She said "put on something sexy" one night before we got in bed, so I put on Tommy the Cat. She said "this is the worst thing I've ever heard in my life, what is this?". I said "It's Primus, they suck". She said "they really do!" so I cranked it up and she left. Really dodged the bullet on that one.
Looking back thinking of how this band inspired me throughout the years… can’t believe they did what they did. I am in utter awe at the accomplishments of this beautiful band. Thank you Primus. Thank you.
You were born about 10 years too late to catch them when they were actually popular on the radio and MTV (I'm 38). The video for Mr Krinkle scared the shit out of 12 year old me, but it had a lasting impression that made me love the band ever since. Pork Soda was among the first few CDs I owned

Christian Gasior Actually, Les has said his biggest influence is The Residents. Not saying Zappa isn't an influence, just not the main one, supposedly.
You can't say which is the best bass player ever. Simply because you can play bass or any other instrument in thousands way. That said Les Calypool is for sure one of the best expression of bass history. And for sure he created an original way to play the bass. He enriched the bass world, helping to enhance this music role that too many times was underestimated.
I just listened to "11" for the first time in my life (new fan, cut me some slack please)--and I think I too have partaken in numerous recreational drugs. What is life? Life is this friggin weird and excellent band.
I dont think its his arms that are fake. i can only spot that the ends of his fingers are extended in those scenes EDIT: I'm usually jamming out by the time 3:18 gets here, but he obviously has fake arms at that part. Pretty sure that earlier in the video its his normal arms.
