His father was a good jazz pianist and he taught him to play and compose melody and killer harmonies. He talks about it in his Travis Smiley interview. I think he learned guitar from a friend and the rest he learned on his own by ear. Especially the drums, he learned it out of spite. Cuz his father made fun of him, saying he had no timing so he could never pick them up. So he learned it out of spite. But this was around age 10 or 11. DUDE WAS A MUSICAL SAVANT

Prince actually popularized what is called "The Minnesota sound." A whole subgenre of music came out in the 80's and whenever you heard it you'd here people describe it as it sounds like Prince, LoL. It was kind of a blend of Rock, New Wave, Pop, Funk and R&B. Definitely a 80's Prince sound.

You can hear a great example of Prince's guitar skills if you listen to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Prince just left all the others in the dust.

Cindy Burroughs I was a Prince fan when he came first came on the scene so that’s telling a little of my age. However, I didn’t follow him as closely as I did Michael Jackson so there you go. When Prince passed I was heartbroken. I stayed on RU-vid for months looking at everything I had missed. I watched his live shows, interviews, videos and his contribution to the “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” during his induction to Hall of Fame. I saw a different depiction of him than I ever did when he was alive. He was awesome.

Classic song. A little info on it; the song was recorded live at a benefit for the Minnesota Dance Theatre in 1983 at the First Avenue nightclub. It actually had an additional verse which was removed and would have otherwise made the song even longer. The strings that you hear were actually overdubbed in after recording had taken place. The “stubbornness” of the audience and in particular that one guy with the glasses and cap is because the video was taken directly from the Purple Rain movie and was essentially the climax of the film. If you’re seeing the clip without the greater context of the movie their reactions might seem a little unusual but there are reasons behind it that will become clearer once you see the movie:

Jack PLEASE react to Terrence Trent D'Arby "Sign your name". Terrence was extremely popular in the day, (and easy on the eyes). The music industry kept comparing him to Prince/Michael Jackson, (and he hated it). He eventually left the U.S. (and swore that he would never return). He now resides in Paris France. He changed his name to Sananda Maitreya. His music/legacy is highly underated. If you are interested in reacting to someone who has broken the mold, (as it relates to mainstream music). Terrence is a treat to behold. "Sign your name", "Wishing well", "Let her down easy", and "Holding on to you", are a few of his greatest hits. Thank you in advance/Thank me later. Sincerely, your Ole school Sinsa.

Prince was such a prolific songwriter leaving behind so much to hate but even more songs to love. I'm telling my age but the first concert I ever saw was Prince and the Revolution and I'm so proud to call myself a Prince fan. He like Madonna, was a true maverick; not afraid to be different and seemingly finding pleasure in making the mainstream uncomfortable. Do yourself a favor and watch the 🎥 Purple Rain. I don't say this lightly but in my humble opinion Prince was more music than man.💜
