Crushing a Ruperts Drop with our hydraulic press in Slow Motion is what we do in this episode.
to our surprise the prince rupert's drop took an enormous amount of pressure before exploding, about 20 tons
this was a awesome video with a very unexpected outcome.

Please try this again with a camera at atleast 10 times higher FPS. Screw resolution, I want to see the fracture move through the glass and see where it originates.

Biblical Knives I have the same feeling - you can see the tail rising up and across the press moving towards to upper right. it would be amazing to see this at 120kfps or so to find out exactly how it broke.
@Evan-lx7nb
@Evan-lx7nb 7 лет назад
The air bubble(s) within the drop gave it a weak point and that is unfortunately how the stress came to breaking it. It would be amazing to see a perfect Prince Rupert's drop (no bubbles, pro-grade glass) under a hydraulic press at hundreds of thousands of frames per second.

Did you even watch the video? Right at the 38s mark you can see that the drop was crushed, the tail breaking had nothing to do with the drop being crushed.

@timwcronin

Greg Prince Rupert drops break easily, but from the tail. check out high speed of a bullet shattering against the bulb of a Price Rupert drop. I doubt the bulb broke before part of the tail. The impacts of the press most likely caused the tail to vibrate and break. The chain reaction then moves over 3600 mph towards the bulb.
@EatingCtrlV
@EatingCtrlV 7 лет назад
Way to go Tim, I watched that video too. Now put you thinking cap on and consider the difference of hitting a drop with a bullet while it's hanging in the air causing an amazing amount of vibration from the impact, and a drop that is being crushed by a press whose face is just as wide as the drop. In the second case there would be no vibration at all, certainly a whole hell of a lot less than a loosely suspended drop. This drop had 20 tons of pressure applied on it and wasn't vibrating at all. How do you think the tail became compromised Tim? It didn't.

Not that hard, You just need to cool hot glass very quickly, the tail forms because it was moving when it hit the water, if you make a liquid glass sphere then ad the water you can get the same effect

If these were made in a zero gravity environment, could they be created perfectly spherical? Due to the lack of a tail. If so, would the strength be correspondingly higher, without the weak point?

That slow motion was so useless, nowhere near fast enough to see what happened. What's the point of 4K slo mo when you can't see anything that happened? This is the reason you only have 14k subs compared to, say, the slo-mo guys, with many, many more subs.
@WarpedYT
@WarpedYT 7 лет назад
Scuba well maybe this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tRUngxK2yXY.html could also be the reason. or it could be that we just started this channel fairly recently, I'm no expert, you tell me
@FYIitsnotme
@FYIitsnotme 7 лет назад
The 4K shit was bait though, don't even lie. Anyone who doesn't get how slow motion works will assume it's slow enough to capture what happens in 4K. You're using ideas from other channels, and not even improving on them. This whole hydraulic press bait shit needs to end.
@WarpedYT
@WarpedYT 7 лет назад
Scuba ??? Not sure what you mean by 4k bait ?. Also we are the first ever on YT to film Hydraulic Presses in Slow Motion and Ultra Slow Motion together with HPC. You may need to do a little research on that , but that's a fact. That being said please go to the hydraulic press Channel and leave the comment that you just left here because we are the ones being copied , as well as HPC. Thanks for commenting and watching .
@FYIitsnotme
@FYIitsnotme 7 лет назад
Warped Perception I never said I supported HPC either, their channel is only popular off the back of one viral video. They don't even try with their content, at the very least, you do. And for the 4K bait, this didn't need to be 4K (since 95% of your audience will not view this in 4K), you could had ran it at 1080 and increased framerate even more.
@WarpedYT
@WarpedYT 7 лет назад
Scuba lol... Your point of view is interesting !. Well the full episodes of the 2016 videos air in 4k in countries that natively support 4k OTA, so off of those we created RU-vid versions, this week or weekend we start uploading our full format episodes to YT an YT Red, however YT Corp also wants 4k. You are correct about the resolution and framerate but we do what we can.

@BankruptGreek
@BankruptGreek 7 лет назад
Golden Ratio it actually doesn't necessarily "connect" to the whole tail, I saw a guy shuttering a piece of the tail without the whole thing exploding, seems to be the case with really big tails In addition to that you have to think that if the shattering of the tiny tail chain reacts to the head then shattering the head should have chain reacted to the tail, so in conclusion that part of the tail wasn't "related" to the drop
@Mr._POV_
@Mr._POV_ 7 лет назад
Different as long as head shatters before the tail, i rest my peace. Which happened here.
@mikejmcc1970
@mikejmcc1970 7 лет назад
The frame rate is just to slow to see what actually happened. Just because all of the tail didn't explode doesn't mean the head shattered first, the compressive and tensile forces in the drop would eventually reach an equilibrium at the end of the tail I think. This was really cool though. If he did break the drop first I'd love to see it at a couple of hundred thousand frames a second. If I had to guess I'd say he did though, considering force wasn't applied any where else.

Michael Fearless the Problem is that its only glass. the strength comes from the specific form and the way it cools off when it hits the water, making the inside of the drop end cool slower and creating a very strong bond. you wouldnt be able to create any shape you want with the same strength. idk if i got the explanation 100 % right, but i saw a neat video about it a while ago. think it was smarter every day.
@-MCMLXXII-

There seems to be a lot of whining about whether or not the drop was made correctly. The fact of the matter is that it really doesn't matter because you can come to one of two conclusions. 1) The drop acts differently if the head it broken before the tail. 2) Even an improperly formed drop can take a fuckton of pressure before shattering. Either way this was awesome.

excellent demo of the famous drop. Can I suggest that we do something in the form of a sandwich with another object, normally regarded as strong, being compressed at the same time as the drop. It would be impressive to see a diamond being crushed whilst the Prince William drop survived!
@RurikLoderr
@RurikLoderr 7 лет назад
I do not think that was a Prince Rupert's Drop. The entirety of a Prince Rupert's Drop is under a whole lot of internal stress. It's this stored potential energy that gives the bulb it's truly mind-boggling resilience. Literally.. I've watched a Prince Rupert's drop survive a shot from a 22 caliber long rifle.. the bullet disintegrated when it hit the bulb. However, it's also the internal stresses that give it it's greatest weakness. All that potential energy is stored as internal stresses.. while the bulb's stresses work to give it incredible strength, the tail winds up also being under the same kind of stress but in an arrangement that makes the entire drop very vulnerable. If any link in this chain is broken, the stored potential energy is released explosively. Since the entirety of the drop is under these stresses, a failure anywhere should cause this chain reaction to explosively disintegrate the entirety of the drop. It's not possible for any part of this chain to survive structural failure. Now, it's at this point that you need to ask yourself... If a real Prince Rupert's Drop explodes, entirely, every time you cause a single failure anywhere on the drop, would the tail have survived? I'd suggest not and it is for this reason that I suggest you may not have created that drop properly and it may have been significantly less resilience than it should have been. I think your cooling pool was too shallow, probably not a low enough temp, and perhaps the glass not properly brought to temperature. I think it cooled too slowly (near instantly is not instantly) or didn't cool uniformly. It may also have just been too small as the strength of a Rupert's Drop comes from the point where the drop's surface is cooled to solid instantly while the molten interior is cooled more slowly, which creates the internal stresses that are so important. I'd seriously suggest trying this again. Make a bunch of them while altering some of the potential variables (cooling pool temp and size; drop size, temp, and height; etc..) and ensure they're real drops by breaking the tails of a few to test if a method of creating them is effective. The entirety of a drop should explode violently when the tail breaks.. The bulb on the other hand.. can shatter bullets and survive forces that are truly mind blowing.
@WarpedYT
@WarpedYT 7 лет назад
RurikLoderr we are going to do this again thoroughly, all I have to say is, no matter how strong, how big or how hard it is, we are going to destroy it again and again with as much excessive force needed. also I think 20 tons is an insane amount of force, 10 full sized cars worth of weight .

The fat part of Rupert's drop is annealed by sudden quenching in water. It's harder than regular steel.
@Markle2k
@Markle2k 7 лет назад
The opposite of annealing, actually. Annealing is letting it cool slowly to allow internal stresses to relax. This is tempering. But otherwise you are correct.

Perfect, of course the results may vary depending on the quality of the drop, but my guess is that a high quality drop in optimal conditions would deformate the pressure point before shatering. Not indestructible but toughter than most materials so it's expected that most materials will experience deformation way before the ball.

@MrSpektyr

Can you redo this but with a proper drop? You left the tail on way too long. It seems like the reason it broke is because the tall tail began to push against the side of the press.
@WarpedYT

MrSpektyr we are going to redo it just slower this time, the tail never touched the Press it's just an optical illusion because we were zoomed in so close. if you watch smarter every day his drops look exactly the same as ours. thanks for watching and thanks for commenting

not a real drop, the tail survived and if you watch another vid they have with it at 380,000 fps, you will see that it's not a proper one, an actual one would have do a lot better, they need to get one made by a glass maker to get an accurate representation, a prince ruperts drop will actually disintegrate a bullet and still have no damage taken, as long as the tail doesn't break from the shock wave!
@SocratesOnFire7

Grant Crawford no meed to reply in that was, there are grounds for my reasoning, as I have seen these, watch smarter everyday's video's on yhe prince ruperts drop, then you will see that I'm not bashing them, its just the drop could have been made more proffesionally, even in smarter everydays videos he sais the same thing about his own, but his drop reacted the way a prince ruperts drop should, I encourage you to watch those videos before trying to bash me again.

What we thought was the tail is not actually the tail. Since the part remaining is actually part of the tail. the true tail was demolished with the prince rupert's drop when it gave way. I also think that might be the point where it snapped because the tail was starting to lean towards the hydraulic press. When you're making a prince ruperts drop you need the trim a portion of the tail because the excess tail led to its demise.
