One thing the UK does brilliantly is pageantry.
We had tickets to go and see this in all its finery today. Prince William was inspecting the guards.

Origins of Trooping the Colour
Regimental flags of the British Army were historically described as ‘Colours’ because they displayed the uniform Colours and insignia worn by the soldiers of different units. The name ‘Colour’ continues to be used to this day. The principal role of a regiment’s Colours was to provide a rallying point on the battlefield. This was important because, without modern communications, it was all too easy for troops to become disoriented and separated from their unit during conflict.
If Troops were to know what their Regiment’s Colours looked like, it was necessary to display them regularly. The way in which this was done was for young officers to march in between the ranks of troops formed up in lines with the Colours held high. This is the origin of the word ‘trooping’. So, what today is a great tradition began life as a vital and practical parade designed to aid unit recognition before a battle commenced.
The Guards are amongst the oldest regiments of the British Army and have served as the personal bodyguards of The Sovereign since the monarchy was restored after the English Civil War in 1660. The ceremony of Trooping the Colour is believed to have been performed first during the reign of King Charles II (1660 - 1685). In 1748, it was decided that this parade would be used to mark the official birthday of the Sovereign and it became an annual event after George III became King in 1760.
Today, this colourful spectacular remains a celebration of the Sovereign’s official birthday. Although Her Majesty The Queen’s actual birthday is the 21st April, her ‘official birthday’ is marked by the Trooping the Colour ceremony.

Why would anyone ever want to get rid of this? I'm Australian and it even makes my heart swell. God Save Our Gracious Queen.

@@ontheslide2339 "those bearskins look hot" True - but appearances can be deceptive. I _have_ heard - from a source I'm unable to name - that those bearskins are equiped with an up-to-the-minute aircon system ;-)

"Why would anyone ever want to get rid of this?" Sadly, there are some with NO Romance in their Soul - and even less understanding of Military Psychology: events such as these instil a sense of morale-boosting pride in the British Army as a whole - no small thing for a chap risking his life on the Front Line with his buddies.

Many thanks for the excellent quality of both visuals and sound. Having watched this on television for more than 50 years it is a pleasant change to see a Non-BBC point of view.

Thanks for the up close and personal views of a magnificent day indeed! Enjoyed the traditional "pomp and circumstances" which was thrilling to watch and listen to! Proud of my mostly Brit-American heritage here since the Revolutionary War, three of my forebears generals in the Continental Army! We were born in Yankee New England on my maternal side, Boston aka "Beantown"! 1776, 246 years ago, in the time frame of 1000 years, really NOT that long ago when you look at those numbers! Senior Royals looked smashing! "God Save the Queen", the future kings and queen consorts and a modern more slimmed down monarchy. Was in the UK and London many moons ago and saw the "Changing of the Guard" at St. James Palace and also did a poster of the Queen's Grenadier Guards for the front of Carnegie Hall when I was a professional fashion illustrator/graphic designer in NYC in the late 1960s. Cheers~

The reason you had to stand when the field guns passed by is because the lead gun is saluted in the same way the Regimental Colour is. In mounted bands the kettle drums are also saluted as the Colour. This was the Colonel's Review which is the final rehearsal of the ceremony and Prince William being the Royal Colonel of the Irish Guards was why he was the Reviewing Colonel

Have seen the trooping from the same stand you were in on many occasions . Watched it with pleasure and pride as. our son has taken part in it a number of times as a trooper . Also when his regiment received new colours . As a London boy i've also seen it many many times when i lived there . Hope you enjoyed it .
@livingourbestlifelyndaandt3948
We loved it. I lived in UK for years before emigrating to NZ and had never seen changing of the guards either. What an amazing experience and made me so proud, so can't imagine what it must be like to have a family member involved. ❤️

It wasn't the Trooping the Colour. It was the Colonel's Review, the last dress rehearsal before the official event take place. Since it was the Irish Guards who trooped their colour, Prince William, Royal Colonel of the IG, did the review.
