Man, you've made my mom cry! I've been telling my mom (A classically trained musician) virtual orchestra's are reaching very close to realism, and she wouldn't believe me, so I played her this, and it's safe to say she's convinced now.
@karlaskmusic

That's quite possibly the nicest compliment imaginable! Thank you for sharing this, it means a lot. And say hi to your mom! :)

Mate, I think this is the first recording I’ve come across by any composer (professional or otherwise) whose mockup doesn’t sound like a plasticky, MIDI-esque imitation of the real thing. (maybe an orchestration which had actual effort put into it helps, IDK). As it sounds now, this could be an underscore for any big-budget Hollywood production, and I wouldn’t raise an eyebrow. Shows how far technology has come. I achieved some great results with layering CCS and CCS solo, but nothing close to this. I would actually pay money for an in-depth tutorial on how you produce. Do you input the instruments one by one by hand (by that I mean keyboard) into the DAW?
@karlaskmusic
@karlaskmusic Год назад
Wow, thanks! That’s very kind. My workflow is that I first compose and orchestrate using Dorico. Then I play each line individually into the DAW, making sure that each instrument gets its own unique performance. It certainly isn’t the fastest way to do it, but I find that this workflow gets the best results for me personally. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have other questions!

I second this! Great score. And honestly, I hate how so many people MIDI just a "Mock up," like no - MIDI instruments, especially Cinematic Studio Series can be a full blown score, not just a "mock up."

I've always found that using scoring tools limited the full potential of the samples and made it sound too robotic. Can you please let me know how you achieved such a natural flow? Is the music we are hearing here performed by the scoring tool (which one?) or did you use a separate DAW for the performance and then scored it? Thanks www.youtube.com/@JanLindenMusic/videos
@karlaskmusic
@karlaskmusic Год назад
For this piece, I worked on the score in Dorico and the mockup in Logic at the same time. I went section by section, first orchestrating it in Dorico and then playing it in in Logic. I agree that playback straight out of notation software rarely sounds very pleasing, so I don't rely on that for playback at all. The natural flow is largely due to a pretty detailed tempo track, with almost constant fluctuations in tempo.

Just saw that you've actually got Pacific Strings in there as well! 😮😊 I'd love to know where it is in the arrangement if you don't mind... I have it in my library but haven't used it yet! Thanks!
@karlaskmusic
@karlaskmusic Год назад
That's right! I used it for layering in all the full-section (i.e., non-divisi) string lines. Basically, for each section, I added an instance of Pacific along with CSS and CSSS, all in one Kontakt instance. I just wanted Pacific to add lushness, not so much tonal content, so I only used the AB mics and turned it down to -6 dB or -9dB (depending on section). For divisi lines, I didn't use Pacific and raised CSSS relative to CSS to make it sound smaller. I hope this helps!
@kwameryan
@kwameryan Год назад
@@karlaskmusic Wow, that's absolutely fascinating Karl and very helpful. I haven't used Pacific yet precisely because I find it so intense! Never considered using it as a layer toned down in the mix. Gonna try that! Thanks! 😊
