Take A Look Inside Diana Princess Of Wales's Apartment at Kensington Palace. Pictures were taken by Paul Burrell shortly after Diana's death. He later published the pictures as part of his 2006 book.
People commenting one year ago about awful decorating are forgetting these are pix from the 80’s. Laura Ashley prints were very in vogue, as was this flat.
At 5:15 it shows Diana's favorite room. That is the only room that shows her homey style. It was pretty obvious she was limited on what she could do in terms of decorating but she made that room the most welcoming.
Just the whole idea of the Tudor family who once lived there, walking around the hallways, etc.. gives me the chills. The history, if walls could talk!
C. Hay Yes, prior to 1917, the members of the British Royal Family did not have a surname; but, they were members of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI, was born in 1895 as a member of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. According to some accounts the name change was due to the fact that it sounded too German. The Windsor family shouldn't be the royal family. It belongs to Michael Edward Abney-Hastings, Britain's Real Monarch. I particularly find English history fascinating because my 18th Great Grandmother, Margaret DeMowbray, Dutchess of Norfolk (1399-1459) is also Anne Boleyns great great grandmother. Anne Boleyn is my 3rd cousin 16 generations removed. I also have in my family line John (Beaufort of Gaunt) Plantagent, 1st Duke of Lancaster, he was my 19th great grandfather.
dV8 Entertainment It is very nice to read this comment. I am Brazilian from Rio de Janeiro and I am really fascinated by the British Royal Family. I' ve been reading a lot about this family for the last 20 years! Thanks for sharing this very good explanation.
dV8 Entertainment I just watched a video -" An Unlawful Killing". Which puts Prince Phillip right in the middle of the Natzis He was born and raised in Germany!!!
I've been to Kensington Palace too and it is absolutely WONDERFUL. There are huge windows for a lot of natural light, beautiful furniture - I found it to be a very open, airy and cheerful place. The public is only allowed in the state rooms and they are very nice!
You have only been in the parts where the public are permitted no doubt. The private quarters are not exactly on display and no doubt are decorated as the resident wishes.
The style & decor is from the 80' & 90's which was nice at that time. I liked Princess Diana's sitting room, which looked super cozy and surrounded with all her little treasures (nic-nacs) and books. I can certainly relate to that. I loved it.
There will never be another. Princess 👸 Diana ! She was a rare beauty beyond compare. Her style and grace made the world stand up and take notice. I admire her and so did the world 🌎! She will be greatly missed! May. God. Bless her and May She. Rest. In. Peace!🦋😇👼🙏🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️
THe fact she was physically beautiful and had great style did not make her a good person. She sufferred mental illness and she had affairs with several married men.
I love seeing Princess Diana's collection of teddy bears and stuff animals. It reminds me that she was just a regular girl who loved the things we all love. She deserved to still be alive today. 💔
She should have been home with her very young children instead of running around Paris with her boyfriend. Just stop acting like she was some innocent little angel... jfc, grow up
@@choosing.tangent 1) Her children were not very young, they were teenagers. 2) They were with their father because it was his turn to have them. It's called SHARED CUSTODY.
Lighten up people. It was the decor of its time. Eclectic with bold colors and florals mixed with plaids, fabrics. Heavy drapes was what was done. Overall classic European look with rich antiques.
Thank you for sharing photos and explaining. A lot happened since you posted in 2015. Considering the apartment decoration dates back to the 80s, I permit myself to gasp for air for the complexity of colour intermingling, awful decor, terrible curtains and, for a woman mother of two, still owning an unexplicable amount of cuddly toys.
People who make them call them soft sculptures. No different than a sculpture of marble, crystal, porcelain, glass, or ceramic. People probably gave them to her and they have sentimental value. Which means she truely cared about people.
The bamboo, and pink frills and Laura Ashley type of curtains, and the chintz, really takes me back to the 80's!. It was of the time, but that sort of décor had a nice light feel not at all oppressive.
The color palette is all over the place, even the picture frames don't match or even go..I know it was the 90's but damm,I was expecting flawless taste and elegance..
If you remember unlike a young kate diana had no fashion sence before marriage her first picture a blouse that didnt coordinate with her tank top and a see through skirt that didnt match
it hurts so much to see where she lived....ate... and we all know how unhappy she was !! what a waste! so sad! never gets better...and i am a stranger! i don't want to imagine who her boys feel! ❤DIANAFOREVER ❤
I have never seen these pictures before! Interesting. I have to say her home was not what I was expecting. I have to agree even redecorated it didn't wow.
@@lyndapet1 What does that have to do with anything? Diana died when the boys were kids. Of course Charles has done more of the raising by default. Also, William is still her son, her blood. So yes, HER son will be king.
To be fair, the photos are pretty terrible as well - taken with a flash which blows out all the highlights and casts horrible shadows everywhere. But the decor is fairly questionable too.
I don’t think she had much choice regarding decorating it! The furniture wasn’t hers, nor was most of the fittings. It was not really a ‘home’ more like a rented, fully furnished apartment. Interesting that some of the pictures and furniture went back into the royal collection after her death. Shame she couldn’t have done that while she was alive!
A lot of people will not appreciate the decor. But old world/old money like this Victorian style. It has a certain charm. When I was in London with my daughter, most hotels looked like this. They didn’t have mod hotels (if there were, I never saw one) and even their taxi cabs are kept to have the vintage look. They like to preserve the past as seen in practically most of their architecture. This style is very English. Personally I think, it s quite elegant.
@@chriswatkin6213 Victorian-era decorating was the opposite of today's modern styles. It was a time of heavy, ornate and large furnishings and a penchant for trinkets. The resulting style is romantic with opulence and quite excessive. Her home was pictured in the 80s but the decor period is from 1800s.
@@chriswatkin6213 Laura Ashley is an interior decorator that takes inspiration from Art Deco and Edwardian Era. 1980s is not an “official”term of an interior decorating style. It’s simply a time where people liked a certain look. Pls educate yourself! Done with morons!
I personally don't like it, I visited many times the mansions in RI USA, and there look way better as picturing the late 19 and 20 centuries wealth, all of course representing the Victorian era. I thought Diana was more modern taste like, but I guess not, she was old soul as well. I like to see it, but I would not like to live in a place with old fornitures. Maybe a mixture of them with contemporary.
Princess Diana was a simple woman. I love her and miss her dearly. She changed so many lives. Such a lovely young woman that had to go early in her life. You are dearly missed Princess of Whales.
@Logan Jones. You are repeating the same old thing, over and again....... SHE loved Charles but all he wanted was an heir and a spare..... No. Diana married a man 13 years her senior, who was serious, hardworking, rather boring, not very handsome, and going bald........ WHY would she do that? Because Diana, the unhappy third daughter of a father who NEEDED A BOY to inherit his title and estate....... (Downton Abbey ring any bells?) Diana was unloved and neglected. So, like a lot of other very beautiful and charming women, she found herself a man who was older, important, rich, and with prospects. BUT, because of the circles in which Diana moved, the man that SHE wanted to marry........ the rich famous balding, 13-years-older Man....... was the man who would one day be King of England, and make HER Queen of England. All she had to do was be NICE and Patient..... Diana wasn't either of those things. And Charles was serious, boring, balding, and not even a good dancer. Emily Lange says "Her only loves we're her two boys"..... And Barry Manakee, and Oliver Hoare and James Hewitt and Theodore Forstmann and JFK jnr and James Gilbey, and Wiil Carling, and Bryan Adams and another young man who will remain nameless, and Mr Hasnat Khan and Dodi Fayed. But of course this promiscuity was all the fault of Charles, who had returned to his previous mistress in 1986, (2 years after Diana's relationship with Manakee) and has been with the same woman ever since. One has to ask the question....Why was Diana so MISERABLE in that family? 1. Was it because the Queen objected to the way that Diana would pass her in the corridors of Buckingham Palace, and not even say "Hello!" let alone "Good Morning, Ma'am!"? 2. Was it because Charles' adoring old Granny, who was so happy to have Diana marry her best friend's gran-daughter....... got cross, when she spent the whole of Christmas sulking and refusing to join in the games and dances and charades? 3. Was it because Margaret, who welcomed her warmly, then cut her dead, when Diana played up to Margaret's charming husband? 4. Was it because Fergie overheard what Diana said about her overweight and her lack of style? 5. Was it because the exceptionally hard-working Princess Royal thought she was a fraud? 6. Was it because she dismissed forty members of the palace staff (yes 40!!) 7. Do you think that maybe she didn't fit in because she kept blabbing to the media about matters that were private? *. Do you think anyone was offended with her, when they discovered she was sleeping with her detective, her equestrian trainer, her best friend's husband and that she was the Toast of the Officers Mess at Wellington Barracks?
@@MandyJMaddison very well said for once. She knew who she was marrying and, she had plenty of affairs, more than Charles, so, stop making her a saint.
@@stevechristie2569 You are supposed to be faithful, even if your spouse isn't "perfect for you". I'm an ISTP so....play the hand you're dealt and stop emoting about having someone perfect for you, especially when you decide the perfect person is someone else's husband and then....no, maybe this other woman's husband....no, sorry this women over here's husband....no wait this man whose religion says he is damed if he marries me....Yeah that's the one. lol. I mean no harm. :-)
I read that most of Princess Diana personnel belongings had been removed, the decor were stripped off after her death (even the wall paper) much to the young Princes sadness..nothing were left to commemorate her existence.
+s kandy ....oh dear - you still spouting the same old same old ?? You, dear, DON'T speak for anyone else in the UK. Suppose you think Harry & William are the devil's own spawn as well then?
Most of these photos look like they were taken right after her marriage and before she had time to redecorate and put any personal touches in. The yellows and the ruffled curtains look very '80's, of course! Miss Diana and her special sparkle and kindness...
Ugh. I was expecting so much more. Her apartment reflects her cold life she lived under the monarchy. I miss her terribly. They used her for an heir and a spare and threw her away. I would love to just ONCE watch a film about Diana where her death in France is not mentioned. RIP Diana
How do you know she had a cold life .she had plenty of warm relationships with other women’s husbands. Her own grandmother and mother said she was the one at fault in the relationship. Its very difficult to live with a personality disorder that is so needy
@@lyndapet1 And how do you know these things? So her grandmother had an opinion...and? From all the program bashing I continue to see even after her death, she's unable to rest in peace. I think that rates as pretty icy cold!!
Diana Princess of Wales is so easy to look at I mean just better than any model just amazing very set a real magic and a real beautiful spirit that shone through
The quarters of a trust-funder. Very Sloan. She was such a lovely energy. Although she was treated with utter disrespect from her husband and the firm she always had a light and powerful. She would be proud of her children and her spirit is certainly guiding Harry to be his best self and to be an independent. Thank you for your video and a glimpse into the life of a beautiful person inside and out.
My city pal worked the Patterson Skytrain for Expo 86, got me on the platform with my son born in 81, she was so stunning I forgot to check Charlie out. Also watched the Royal Wedding, on a B&W with 200 Campers in Osooyoos, B.C. What a night to remember, she was our Canadian Princess, who was loved by all. 🇨🇦 ❤.
For Fashion as well-clothing, Hair and makeup, but look Princess Diana Looked BEST EVEN in that Era, she was The REAL Beauty with GREAT sense of Fashion !!
Catherine Murphy upper-class furnish their homes with leftovers. Museum quality Chippendale Queen Anne mahogany Walnut. It's a sign of taste, class, resourcefulness. that's why the upper-class kept their monies from generation to Generation. English upper class look down on people who have to buy their furniture.
Que Bella¡ ¡ Mama, con sus pequeños Hijos. Se la quitaron a temprana edad.. Aunque tienen Buenos Recuerdos de Ella, Aún la necesitaban por más Años de crecer en edad y madurez ,
Paul Burell wrote in his book that he took the Rosary Beads that Mother Theresa had given the Princess, from the statue on her desk, to France and asked the Nurse to place them in her hands in her coffin but, they're still on the desk! He also said that the rooms were taped up by him and her Protection Officer, Colin Tebitt before they left......... A lot of things he's said aren't true in my opinion. He also said he arranged for fans and sheets at the windows in France, Colin said he had asked.... I think I'd believe a Royal P Officer, Retd Police! RIP Diana... 💐🌹💔Xxx
I can see why she was so depressed! What a crying shame - a great loss to humanity and the people who truly loved her. What Charles found in the moron he later married will always be a mystery worldwide!!
@Joyce Thurman Exactly - don't blame the 80's. I had a gorgeous Bauhaus sofa, a cream and blue striped hemp carpet, a swedish pine armoire - all on a waitress's paltry pay. Money can't buy you taste.
I think some people should have a look at the home Diana grew up in. This kind of furnishing is natural. It may not be to your liking or taste but she could very easily have changed it if she wanted to for all you know maybe this is how she wanted it. I willing to bet most of that furniture is priceless. I cannot help but wonder all she did on her own what makes a lot of you think she " had" to live like this???? We have choices in life !!
There's that element, but I think no-one would ever know, and they wouldn't come across as human. The whole place was emptied I think and re modelled that's why he took them.
I agree, cannot stand Paul Burrell, a two faced liar. As for Andrew Morton he remained friends with Diana until her death. After all she did work with him on her book although he wasn't allowed to admit it when it first hit the tabloids.
@Mrssewhardtoplease exactly frogmore used to be housing for servants and hasn't been used in a long time. Also it has planes flying over constantly so a few million never sounded crazy to me. Renovation and soundproofing on a house hundreds of years old would be very expensive to just make it livable.
@@jessicalawrence6967 Besides, there were articles that said Frogmore Cottage was one of several properties scheduled for renovation, but because Meghan lives there the trash tabloids did everything could to rile up the haters. No one is pointing out that William and Catherine's place at KP cost more to be renovated before they moved in.
I enjoyed this portrait of Princess Diana’s home. I find her style intimate & taste aristocratic juxtaposed with middle class sensibility. For me, while a tad cluttered, it reflects a woman of warmth & taste. Her environment achieved what appears to be her aim; Inviting & intimate.
Jean Koller ... who's to say? All I can say is this man put himself out there in a way no employee ever has whilst being in the employ of the royal family, except for Crawfie, the nanny to the queen and her sister when they were both princesses. She wrote a book of their lives as children and she was shunned by the family, not even sending a wreath to her funeral. She was never mentioned again. Burrell may have been a great support to Diana but he made a damn good living off her death and his association to her.
It never occurred to me that the most prominent members of the Royal family basically have to live together in the equivalent of a midrange condo complex. That's.....actually really surprising. I know it's free housing, but still.
I know, right!? We're used to only seeing the grand palaces from the outside. I guess once you move in all the family, their spouses, their children, and their dogs, the available space gets divided up pretty quickly. That staircase looked pretty grand though, I feel like these images might not really offer it justice. EDIT: The pictures do not do it justice... here's what wikipedia had to say about apartments 8 & 9: "Apartments 8 & 9 are two conjoined chambers situated on the northern-most section of the main palatial building. The apartment covers three storeys. During its use as a residence, the two-room nursery covered the entirety of the top floor; other spaces included two reception rooms: a drawing room doubling as Diana's office, a sitting room with a television, and a formal dining room... The residence had a helicopter pad, and many outdoor gardens, including one on the roof and a greenhouse..."
@@SR-iy4gg LOL 🤣🤣🤣. I WAS a lower income family in the 80's and 90's and would have LOVED to have had that antique furniture and those sofas ! Hindsight is 20/20. No "lower income " family has anything LIKE her sitting room. It was meant to be personal and private, not some film set out of Architectural Dig3st.
