Spain's Princess Leonor has had a dynamic July, marking significant milestones as she prepares for her future role as the country's queen. After enjoying festivities with her military peers in Jaca at the end of June, she joined her parents, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, in Marín for a momentous occasion at the Naval Military School. There, she presided over the ceremony where new Navy officers received their royal commissions.
In just a few weeks, Leonor will embark on her own military journey by joining the Naval Military School as a midshipman, continuing her intensive training after ten months at the Army's Zaragoza Academy.
Queen Letizia, adorned in a chic sleeveless black dress, and Leonor made a striking entrance at the event. Leonor, dressed in the Army's ceremonial uniform complete with a cap, recently appointed as a second lieutenant, also wore the distinguished white and red silk sash of the Grand Cross of Military Merit, bestowed upon her by King Felipe during her commissioning ceremony. Meanwhile, King Felipe donned the pristine white uniform of the Navy.
The ceremony commenced with King Felipe reviewing the troops alongside top military officials, including the Chief of Naval Staff and other dignitaries. Among the distinguished guests was Princess Cristina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, cousin of King Juan Carlos and wife of Pedro López-Quesada, who attended in support of their son Pedro, currently pursuing a naval career.
The event was not only a celebration but also a solemn occasion, marked by a prayer of thanks led by the Archbishop General of the Spanish Armed Forces, the recitation of the Navy anthem, and a poignant tribute to fallen heroes. The highlight was King Felipe's delivery of Royal Dispatches to outstanding officers who excelled in their respective promotions.
This year's ceremony underscored the critical roles these new officers will assume within Spain's Armed Forces. Whether commanding naval units aboard ships, submarines, or partaking in special operations, their responsibilities will be crucial in safeguarding national security and undertaking missions across the globe.
The academic year 2023-2024 at the Naval Military School has been robust, with 718 students receiving comprehensive training across various military disciplines, reflecting a diverse cohort committed to serving Spain's defense interests.
As Princess Leonor prepares for her future responsibilities, this event marks a significant step in her journey towards leadership within Spain's military and underscores her commitment to national service. Her presence alongside King Felipe and Queen Letizia reaffirms the monarchy's dedication to supporting and honoring Spain's military heritage and future.
