This sounds so much better than almost any Western DOS game. I honestly had no idea the YMF262 could sound so good. Japanese devs were simply better at composing in FM.
Yeah, its sadly very obscure beyond Japan, but inside Japan its popular enough to make 5 sequels and some side games. Definitely more than niche inside Japan. I got lucky to get a chinese MS-DOS port back in 1995.
@@StriderVM I've tried to play all of them after 2, but only got I think.. 5 to work with English patch. One of those situations where I wish I could read kanji.
Theres even now a fully translated English version on Steam. Its a good time to try out these game series. As a personal pick, Princess Maker 2 is the most newbie friendly, you can muck around to see what sticks yet dont feel penalized for it.
If someone told me that 23:11 was an unused track from Rusty, I'd 100% believe them. Not surprising, since it's from the same composer, features the same leitmotifs, and uses the same sound engine, but still.
I've been playing PM2 (DOS version) for like a decade now... and this is literally the first time I've ever heard the music. Damn I've been missing out.
When I first played, I thought there was no music, but that made no sense. Went into setup and fixed that promptly. I can't imagine this game without the music. Love this soundtrack. oh, hello Daria :)
Nooo, I thought I left educating people about DOS games that have sound back in the 90's!! :( Sorry to see people still realising this well after the fact...
@@DariaPlaysRPGs your post may be 4 years ago but that's a fleeting moment compared to how many years ago I was still trying to explain to my high school friends how much better their favourite games were with sound... 😮
Thanks a lot!!!! I really liked this game when I played it years ago. Tournament Battle music probably has been my number one earworm ever. That download link would be nice :)
Actually this soundtrack was created for Yamaha YM3812 OPL2 FM synth chip but I know that Sound Blaster 16 with YMF262 OPL3 are reverse compatible with OPL2 based sound cards like Adlib and earlier Sound Blaster. This soundtrack uses PMD sound driver with no MIDI support, for MIDI it was created MMD sound driver in this game.
For these kinds of videos, I usually just put what I used to record the soundtrack in the title. In this case it's the CT1740. For the midi variant I used an XG Lite Keyboard.
Alright, I uploaded it onto a folder on Mega. So anyone looking for it can find the link at the "about" part on my channel. After (Remixes/Arrangements, etc:)
Nobody puts up the whole sound track because it gets taken down eventually if it sounds too accurate. The game should sound like the Windows Refine (WAVE mode) or PS2 version if setup correctly. The DOS version is based on the PC-98 version, which the sound is somewhat nerfed since PC's do not have a Yamaha OPNA, regardless if you use SB or MT-32 mode. Early Windows versions (16 color) only use the onboard midi. Later Windows "refine" versions use whatever onboard midi is available and sound terrible on the default "GS" synth available in Windows XP and later, and hence have a "Wave" sound track available. The only version that sounds significantly different on purpose is the Sega Saturn version which is not available on youtube. This is a characteristic of "Sega" ports of pretty much everything.
So, for DOS version there are WAV, SB MIDI, and MT-32 MIDI? I remember playing it in MIDI mode (don't remember which one) on SB card, but that card is no longer working in modern OS, and I can't setup MIDI emulator properly. It seems it's time to try again after those years. Can you recommend what mode is better to aim for? SB MIDI?
The Princess Maker 2 DOS version that is out in the wild is an unauthorized (eg pirate) review copy that escaped and has drivers for SB MIDI and MT-32 MIDI. The REFINE Windows versions are GM-MIDI and WAV. If you set the game up correctly on a PC, you'll probably be more satisfied with the MT-32 track, but the SB/Adlib track isn't any worse since the game was originally designed for a specific kind of FM-synth found in the PC-98 (OPNA) I'd suggest trying to find one of the soundtrack discs vgmdb.net/album/956 A lot of Japanese OST's are hard to find (especially if you're outside of Japan) but sometimes they show up on eBay and such. Look for "princess maker 2 nec pc 9801" if you want a better idea of what it originally sounds like on the Japanese computers.
I do not know what version I have (it's so under MS-DOS), but it allows using both Sound Blaster and MT-32 or GM midi synthesis for music. I used the bundle "SB + GM midi" (with SGM 2.01), and it sounded very cool.
Try running the setup/install program. Like many old DOS games, it'll let you pick devices. If you're not actually putting in in Dosbox, that could be a problem too.
Sweet! I'm gonna use this the next time I need some music in the background. Might wanna prepare yourself in case someone asks for a download link, unless you don't want to bother with that.
+dorko4u Yeah, sorting the files would be the only thing I need to do. But if and when I do get around to it, they'll probably all be uncompressed wav files. (So above a gig. in size.)
+SypherAP There's a few websites that will convert RU-vid video's to MP3 audio - I'm downloading the file now actually. Am putting together a review video for PM2 and my copy of the game doesn't have any sound. So thank you for this.
