I love Princeton. My mom sister and i would go every summer during the 60's and 70's to see mom's side of the family. It seems like yesterday my cousin Suzy dropped me off at the theater downtown to see James Gardner in "Formula 1". It was summer 1966. Good Times

Probably because this was the closest place to an uncharted desert isle he could find. Thanks to assholes like Joe Manchin and Jim Justice it will continue to stay that way. Borned and raised in the Eastern Panhandle. Left for ten years came back and lived here for 35 years. Ready to move where it's warmer and people have a chance to make a decent living, good wifi and does not have a GOP state legislature that beats up the working man and his family while it rewards the corrupt businessmen and makes them lawmakers! With all the coal, timber, chemicals, and electricity that's left this little state(less people than a borough in NYC) over the last hundred years its a crime hill folks dont get an annual dividend stimulus check(like Alaska) just for living there! No State tax, no high fuel tax and no sin taxes! In the top ten categories we are 45th or worst! Everyday more people are leaving than unlike Bob Denver moving here. Our new slogan could be "Wild and Wonderful in the Rearview Mirror"!

@@jeromedavid7944 i live in shits-hole Illinois. the state has the highest number of daily departures in the country. it is by far the worse state in America. almost every Governor in the last 40ish years has ended up in prison. WVA would be massive step up from living in Illinois

They're restoring a downtown theatee in Princeton WV to be named the Renaissance Theater and they will have a Bob Denver(Gilligan) museum in it,Bob Denver's wife is from Mercer County and he lived his later years in the area.I love it,when old downtown theaters are being back to life,a great catylist towards downtown revitalization.

Princeton is such a pretty clean little town. They have worked really hard to make this little town appealing. The Battle of Pigeon Roost took place just a short distance out of Princeton. Thanks for all the history you bring to us. The ❤of Mercer County.

Enjoy watching your videos! Princeton is my home town and really loved watching you all show all the updates. One of the buildings you mentioned was the Chuck Mathena building, that building was built in remembrance of Chuckie Mathena a young man that lost his life at 21 in a tragic car accident. His dad is a wonderful guy (not a politician) and he works at or owns the Memorial Funeral home in Princeton. Thanks for the videos. ❤️

There is still cruising in Princeton during the warmer months every third Saturday May through October. Folks come out sit in their pop up chairs and watch the cool rides go bye. It’s usually backed up on each end of town and can take a long time to get from one end to the other. You should do a video of Cool Cruising Nights on Mercer St. They have a FB page as well.

Sooo many memories of Princeton! My great grandmother lived there-on top of the hill! Still have family there! Father from Mullins-won ‘55 state basketball championship-beat jerry west in the final….then lost to jerry west in the ‘56 state final! Grandfather a WVA STATE TROOPER! Went through this town when I was really, really, REALLY young and the building that Cheap Thrills is in was a Big Boy. It's the one and only time I ate at a Big Boy. It had the statue and all. lol

My family buried in Elgood wva! A trip there w challenge your driving! Old church on top of a mountain where you can see forever (heaven) We used to go to pipestem state park and ride the tram to the bottom and play in the stream/and eat! Then swim in pipestem pool!!

4 of my siblings were born in Princeton. I have numerous relatives in and around Mercer County. Dad started out in Bluefield for Appalachian Power Co in 1946. They all moved to Saint Albans in Kanawha County, when APCO transferred his entire crew to Charleston. Princeton is a neat town. Nothing quite like southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia!! My parents first date was in Princeton, when Dad (who live in Giles County, Virginia) took mom (who was from Hillsville, Carroll County, Virginia...but was attending Bluefield Business College and living in Princeton) to see 'Gone with the Wind' at the theater ìn Princeton. Tudors Biscuit World/Gino's started in Nitro. I know a couple of their corporate people. Shane if you like Country Ham (as well as I do) try the Mountaineer. They're fantastic.

I can't believe how big and spread out that town is, yet only 5600 people? Wow. I would have guessed a lot more than that. The place is huge. Our Princeton is also in Mercer County, and is also the county seat. But our Princeton is very old. I believe it goes back to the mid 1700s. It is also a college town, the home of Princeton University. Mercer County also contains the state capital, Trenton. Don't tell me there's a Trenton in West Virginia too? lol. I enjoyed this, and I loved that big red brick church, and that school.

Another great video as usual, my best friend growing up in Northern Virginia was from MacRoberts Kentucky,and I think you've done a video of that town but he ended up in Princeton. Every year for 15 years in February I would drive to Florida from Maine, he always told me to stop and visit a couple of days but I never did,unfortunately. He's gone now so I guess you gave me the tour he would have! I really enjoy your videos. Thanks so much and Take Care

The former WVU standout in basketball and played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Dr. Jerry West is from Princeton. My old hometown. Mercer Street used to be the place.

Virginian Railway had massive shops just north of the museum where steam locomotives and coal cars were built. Unfortunately like at Mullens all of the buildings are gone.

Next time you are in this area, DO stop at Dollys diner. They have great food!! You won't be sorry. Many times we have been there and they are always busy. 👍

They did have a Taxi service. I used a taxi to pick me up and transport me to Bluefield Airport in October 1973. "Piedmont Airport."

My mom used to do all our clothes shopping at Cox's department store but in McKeesport ,Pennsylvania many years ago.We lived 30 minutes south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

I can tell you two are great people. As are pretty much everyone in Appalachia. Grandpa was a coal miner from Lee County Virginia. They moved all around to different coal camps and my dad was born in leatherwood Kentucky. I'm half hillbilly and proud of it.

I live in Princeton my whole life and it's an ok city, I'm glad they redone the downtown area but they need to build some buildings where buildings used to be at to make the downtown look better. I wish this city would preserve historical sites but instead they tear them down which is a disgrace. The only downfall living here is the drug problem here and the druggies stealing off from working people that live here.

Thanks for another good video! I had several customers in that area, stayed in the Days Inn on the hill near the Cracker Barrel four nights a month. Knew all the maids and clerks, they never raised my rate for 15 years. Some good friends live there. Many fine people there!

The theater on Mercer Street is being re-done and is supposed to have the Bob Denver museum in it. Where the little park across the street was the Mercer Theater, but it burned down a lot of years ago. Thanks for the video of Downtown Princeton, WV

There's a great little motel on 104 east called The Turnpike Motel. I was staying there on my way to my daughter's house in October of 2020. I woke up to the news that Sean Connery had died. Ugh. At least he waited until the day AFTER my birthday. :(

@@realappalachia I forgot what I got to eat at Dolly's, but I was pretty beat by the time I got there, got my food and got back to my room. I remember it was very tasty. I'm pretty sure I got a burger/fries and a dessert.

Sadly there are not many historical sites left in Princeton, our city loves to tear them down, then what few was left they have painted hideous pictures on that are basically an eyesore. The only classy painting to see is the war mural. We had a beautiful old home that dated back to pre Civil War era, it was used for a short time for business and apartments but the city decided it needed to be torn down. A local attorney tried to save the house but the 'powers' that be did what they always do here, they tore it down. It was a magnificent structure, but to the city it was garbage just like many other historical buildings in this area. Love your videos, especially the ones of the old Coalfields and their towns.

Honestly, I've always felt the same way about the murals they had painted. They're an eyesore everytime I drove by them, except for the WWII mural..

It's horrible that they didn't try and restore it to what it was in the 'golden' days. I remember when G.C. Murphys, The Stag, Leggett's, Lynch's Men's wear and so many other stores were there and it was a great little town. I was hoping they would re-open Jimmy's restaurant, they always had the best food in town, but if they renovate it in the same manner as some of the other buildings then I hope they leave it alone, because they will just ruin it. It is so sad 😞

@@msbigdog1460 I used to go in Jimmy's all the time in the 70s....I went to j h with his daughter....sometimes she would be working in the evening and I'd get to talk to her.. .I used to get their coconut pie every time we went....that's been a long time ago now...I used to go to joe hamdens all the time too.... Joe used to ask us why we weren't in school....I used to go to school with his little brother Norman too

I think it is wonderful to restore old towns. However, Princeton had a busy downtown before the mall was built. It then became almost deserted. I think the committee that is restoring downtown now has made it more of an artsy place. I think what they are doing is marvelous. It has gone from busy to deserted and now back to busy. I look forward to more places opening.

Melody, if you read one of the books like George Remus, Bourbon King, you will find an amazing example of how truth can be a lot stranger than fiction! I think that is the book I picked up from the library. He was really bigger than Al Capone and actually supplied him.

I used to live in 1 of the apartments on that street My neice had a resturant there and I have neices and cousins still living there. It' looks a lot different now., WV hot dogs are the best.

Having lived in the East valley (that's what the Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert area is called) for 40 years, watching this makes me miss the area. if you're ever in the area again (Mesa), try Los Dos Malinos restaurant. Very hot Mexican food. Located just North of Southern on Alma School, west side of Alma School. I took my brother and sister-in-law there once when they visited. They still talk about it.

Reel Catch is an artificial pond that was dug in the middle of a parking lot. It's overstocked with catfish that seem to be overfed because they're usually enormous. What they do is host fishing tournaments. I've lived in Princeton for 3 years now (I'm from Charlottesville VA), and all I can say is it's a neat place to visit, but I wouldn't wanna live here. There's so much meth and heroin in this town, and the junkies that abuse them.

It's strange to me that everyone knows southern exposure. Originally that was a new construction and place of Roma III, the best italian place in princeton. But for some reason, it didn't survive long before it closed and the strip club took it over. As a kid, i ate in that building when it was the restaurant.

Thanks, y’all for a good video of Princeton. My stomping grounds. Much better than another video posted. Interesting story in the published History of Mercer County about the McNutt House. The lady of the house, Mrs. McNutt, accosted the Union soldiers who tried to seize the home for their HQ. Of course, they overpowered her. Another reason why it’s so ironic about having the HQ there. Technically, W. Va. is part of the South because we’re below the Mason-Dixon Line. But a “guesstimated” dividing line is probably I-64. Anything below and it is for sure in the South. Above…. debatable, I suppose, as it was the northern counties that “formed” the state. It’s not completely clear how Mercer county made into the borders, but speculation has pointed to the fact that East River Mountain forms a sort of natural border. In some cases, during the conventions to form the state, talk of going as far as what is now Wise, Va. was considered. Thanks again for the video and for some positivity about Princeton!! And yes, cruising was the best way to socialize on the weekend!!

A couple of decades ago, i was on my way back home and was going to go by Richlands where my grandparents came from. I stopped in Princeton to ask for directions because i had somehow taken a wrong turn. I pulled into a little gas station and an old man walked up to my window and asked if i needed gas. I told him i didn't but wanted to ask him where Richlands was...he thought a few seconds and answered 'It's the same damn place it always was i reckon' . So with my tail tucked between my legs, i just slowly pulled out and headed down the road. I asked for that one. ;-)

Kombucha is fermented tea. It can be drank plain or flavored. It can be made with black tea or a blend of black and green tea. It is actually very easy to make. And because it is fermented you should drink it in moderation or you may run to the bathroom. But a sip or two per day is good for your digestive system. Thanks for the drive through Princeton.
