Fun fact, the whole idea of the tiny sub thing the teacher does is a reference to a lost Nick show from the 90’s called Weinerville, which was hosted by Marc Weiner, who plays the substitute teacher in this episode

"If its a planned absence there would be a lesson plan in place" Oh this brings back memories. When I was in high school my health or homeroom teacher (I can't remember exactly) was out for the bulk of the entire semester battling cancer; he sadly did not make it, but the school didn'r leave a lesson plan in place, that entire class was me and a friend of mine grabbing Chromebooks and playing Geoguessr the whole time. Looking back I don't know how the school administration didn't have a contingency plan in place.

This hits a bit different now that I'm a substitute teacher. Also, the "listen/don't listen list" is actually sort of real. At the high school where I do most of my substitute work, I've often seen emergency lesson plans with notes like "don't let such-and-such student leave classroom for any reason" or "if you need help, such-and-such student is very reliable."

This episode showed a variety of substitute teachers, but i find it odd how it didn't give tips or dealing with an overly strict substitute who oversteps their bounds. There's a Nickelodeon show called "As Told By Ginger," and in the episode "Driven to Extremes" the main character has to deal with an extremely strict and mean teacher who constantly yells at the students and assigns insanely long essays for any student who so much as speaks. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on it. Note: despite being from the same network as Ned's and Spongebob, it's much more realistic, similar to Hey Arnold but even more down to earth.

this reminds me of an episode of the kids show arthur, where mr ratburn got sick so he called his sister who is also a teacher to sub, and they think she's gonna be tough cause ratburn is, but then she comes in and starts teaching about colours and basic first grade subjects and at first arthur and his friends like it until they get bored and aren't being challenged, then they are so happy when mr ratburn is back

I had another experience with some type of substitute teachers In elementary school. So basically the parents of kids who went to school there, can become temporary teachers while their child was enrolled there, because it was a small town/community. There were alot of rich kids that has their moms working for the school not because they had teaching degrees but because their child went to school there

In my school, they usually had about 6 or so recurring subs that would rotate around, so you never knew really who you'd get till you were there in the class with 'em. Usually you just knew there would be a sub today. Some were more popular than others but usually it was pretty much a study hall day where they'd take attendance, and we'd just spend the day working on homework and such. Sometimes they had a work sheet or something like that and have use do that. Never really had a long term sub myself, usually just one day, maybe three at the most. There was some weird thing that happened with one of the English teachers where they ended up having to replace the regular teacher, wasn't in that class though, so no idea how that ended up getting handled or even what that was all about. Some rumors and such about that but no idea what was true vs what was kids exaggeration.

I still remember my 11th grade year for my Drama Class our teacher was fired or something almost half way though the year so most of the year we had a sub. Since it was so sudden the Administrator who handles that part of the school had to make the lesson plans for us to do. We got a new Drama teacher about a month or two before the school year finished. She was recently finished with college as well. I got to know her my 12 grade year when I took Technical Theater Class since she became the full time Drama teacher.

It might be down to country/regional differences but I remember that in my second year when I attended (private) middle school, one of the classes which I think was social studies oriented had a teacher who was absent for most of the school year and didn't really leave any classwork other than a year-long film project which never actually got made since there wasn't anyone there to keep the students accountable with more realistic deadlines for updates, so most of the time we just kind of sat around and did whatever else during the 50 or so designated minutes for that class. At the end of the year he just passed everyone, I'm not sure what his deal was but he clearly didn't seem happy about how things turned out. I vaguely remember getting sub teachers a couple times in primary school (same private school), but can't really remember that ever happening in middle school or high school (I went to a public HS), if the teacher was late we just kind of assumed s/he just wasn't going to show up after a while and did whatever else to pass the time. But I'm also not sure how students being out of class is usually handled in the US, in the high school I went to at least most of the hallways and common areas outside of classrooms and offices were outdoors and there were basically no restrictions for hanging out there unless it was getting late at night (we had a morning and afternoon shift, the latest classes ended at around 9 PM, if you weren't in a class from about 8 PM onward the prefects would ask you to leave). There were also no restrictions for how often you could go in and out of the school grounds outside of that same late hour thing (the exit was always open, to go in you just had to flash your school ID, both were closed after a certain hour and someone had to be there to let out the students who got out late). From what I remember of the private school I went to before that (they had HS level classes too), that wasn't really the case there, so I wonder what would've ended up happening in the same situation.

Back in Grades Pre-k through 6th grade long term and short term subs I've head always gave work and taught just like the teacher. However, after reaching 7th through 12th grade only long term subs teach lessons. While the short term subs just sat down and watched over the class. While everyone would quietly talk with each other, do their homework, play on their phones, and etc. During Community College and College professors would cancel the lectures on the days they aren't available. But they'll give work to do at home on websites like Zybook or Blackboard.

I’m a substitute, and have been mostly the one day sub. There were lesson plans that did amount to either have the classes do worksheets or to teach the class about what they need to learn. I have yet to do the latter for the High School, so my days do vary. And yes, I have been taken advantage of, and may have raised my voice at a class out of frustration.

During I think my sophmore year of high school I was in an algebra class in which about the first quarter of the semester the teacher was out dealing with health issues so we had like 2 or 3 different long term subs. Everyone was doing great in the class till the actual teacher returned all of us started failing all the work lol. Gladly that teacher battled her illness and continued teaching at that school at least for the time being that I was there. During the time of one of the subs I remember going to the library which was a big library. The sub was helping a student all the way in the back and another teacher had brought that sub a cup of coffee and since he didn't see, my friend dared me to take a sip out of it. 13:04 My senior year of high school in a geometry class we had a sub where the teacher left a note saying that the class was a tough class due to the students not being well behaved. That sub yelled at the class aloott. Luckily that sub remembered me from previous years and knew I was particularly behaved so I didn't get yelled at like the rest of the class.

When you were a band director, what did you leave for non music educator subs when you were out? I know my band classes with a sub were either a study period or the class would have to listen to a musical piece and spend the rest of class writing about it, since a regular sub may not be equipped to conduct the band.

Either a writing assignment, a video with writing assignment, or allowed them to practice their instruments.

In California you need a bachelors degree and to pass an exam called the cbest to be a substitute. 😀

Interesting. Yes it varies by state. Georgia doesn’t require this but there are counties within Georgia that do. 👍

Hi There Sir Principal Brandon! When I Was In Middle School You Had To Be In The 8th Grade To Be A Teachers Assistant! And When I Was In High School You Had To Be A Junior Or A Senior To Be A Teachers Assistant! Why Would That Be Sir Principal Brandon!?

They probably wanted to make sure students were mature enough.

Okay, maybe I'm overthinking this, and I understand that he is a faculty member, but wouldn't Mr. Weiner going into the girls bathroom, even if it's to rescue a student, be an issue?
