In this video I continue my explanation of rhetorical figures that pertain to repetition, and how they can be applied to music.
A special thanks as always to musopen.org and imslp.org for offering free public domain sheet music and recordings online.

Great video again! I love the calm stile, the simplistic animations, and of course the interesting topics. I think everyone has heard some kind of these rhetorical devices and is (maybe unconsciously) aware of their existence. But we rarely think about them in this categorized and analytical way when we aren't giving them names and exact definitions. But this active awareness of the rhetorical devices and their distinction from others is such an interesting thing for both (learning) composers and musicologists! One thing that occurred to me was that I see the anadiplosis and the epizeuxis often connected: The phrase ends with a seemingly unimportant set of notes. These notes are then repeated in a kind of searching/improvisatory way, often separated by rests and then they are developed to a fully new theme. Does this have a name too? If it is unclear what I mean, I'll try to provide examples, but generally, I'm thinking of later romantic (often piano) works utilizing this rhetorical device.

As for Geminatio/Epizeuxis, as E. A. Poe said: bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, of the bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells. You'll note his repetition of the word 'bells'.

What a wonderful channel. Could you make a video on how amateur musicians and can get into it and befin experimenting? Techniques, tips, ideas, methods, etc.? I know this is more "basic" than what you generally do but there are so many amateur players I know (incl. myself) who would like to get into composing but don't really know where to start.

This is actually harder than one might think, and honestly it’s hard to imagine where I would start. I’ll have to give it some thought. I might have an idea though....

Would you consider the repetition of the Fate Motif at the beginning of the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony to be a rhythmic Geminatio that has been melodically altered to add tension?
@MusicaUniversalis
@MusicaUniversalis 4 года назад
It’s a rhythmic Epizeuxis if anything, since the same rhythm is repeated way more than two times. Geminatio is the twining of a phrase. An Epizeuxis is used for vehemence, or for comedic effect, depends on the context. In Beethoven’s 5th it’s decently vehement in nature.

So what would the difference between Geminatio and Epizeuxis be?

Could you explain the characteristics of the madrigals? Would be amazing if you could explain the devices used to express certain emotions like whispers/suspiro

I’m not a huge expert when it comes to madrigals, but in Part IV I will be discussing devices that apply to programmatic music. Probably not exactly what you’re after, but maybe it’ll help you make a connection to what you’re referring to. I won’t be discussing madrigals in the next part but I will be discussing devices in Schubert Lieder, and how they mirror the text of the songs themselves.

elton wild As for books, I mentioned musica poetica by Burmeister in part one (not particularly useful in my opinion though, but it might give you some context). Otherwise just look into literary rhetoric, a lot of it can be applied to music. I’m trying to offer a different way of interpreting music that isn’t bogged down in heavily music specific terminology as I’m trying to relate music to more things than just music itself. Seeing as we have evidence that Bach used rhetoric in his music, I don’t think this is a silly or nonsensical topic. We have to wind back the clock a bit to a time before generations of musicologists over interpreted everything and developed overly complicated explanations for relatively simple concepts.
