A much needed update on whats going on. There are an infinite number of directions that a business can go in the future and it can be overwhelming. I choose to be excited to see what happens. I'm planning on investing in three areas. Some sort of software to increase efficiency. Additional people to help get work done faster. More printing capacity to speed up printing during busy times. Wohoo!

Similar pathway, but with UK and international experience. It's been interesting to see how printing has changed through electronic/computerization. From letterpress to digital, how life changes; glad to leave the burn for others. Living life until my stamina runs down, love seeing this guy's firm develop. 🙏🇪🇺🍷🇬🇧🇫🇷👍

As a former printer who had to shut it down due to loosing $$$$ and having a disabled child to take care of, it gives me so much joy and hope to see you loving what you do. I have wonderful memories of dealing with clients who were impossible to satisfy as well as some who knew exactly what they wanted and were satisfied with the end results. Keep up the great work and entertain us with new videos often!

Hello sir, glad to see you again! Dont scrap those Ultra+ printers. I keep an Ultra+ and an Ultra running with over 100 million clicks apiece. They still run great but require the usual periodic maintenance. Parts for the Titans work in those older printers. You probably need new charge grid assemblies, OPC belts, and TTF belts. Youll need someone with a laptop configured with Oce Robin/Porthos to connect to them to run the necessary adjustments. Good luck!
@justaprinter
@justaprinter 9 месяцев назад
The laptop is the problem. I'll keep searching for someone. But honestly just am ready to move to a machine that I have control over. I only spent a few thousand dollars on my Ultras so no loss there. Just a shame since they are in such good condition.

I work at a small printshop, we have 2 canon imagepress. An oce plotwave, hp plotter, an oce Arizona gt 365 and two konika printers. One just b/w and another color. Sometimes I have four of those machines running at once. That’s how I get my steps in for my Fitbit 😂 I just saw your channel. Enjoy it. I’m glad there are other cool print shops.

If you want more business, you should really give more details about how people can become your client here on your channel. I've been scouring your videos looking for some info on how to send you an order but I haven't found ANYTHING, and it's especially wild since 37k subscribers is nothing to sneeze at. Some marketers would KILL for your level of reach and you're not using it!

Happy to see a new video, Dan! So glad you’ve been busy and doing well. As far as recommendations go, I’ve always been a Ricoh guy, so I’d recommend the new c9500 for color work. You could probably replace all three of those smaller color machines with one. As you know it always comes down to service, so it depends on what’s reliable in your area. Web to Print, I would say PageDNA. Little expensive but very nice suite. Those continuous inkjet machines are amazing, but I’m not sure you have enough space there. Would make things easier for finishing going roll to finish. Glad you’re back!

Watched a few of your videos, and I always come back to the same thought: I bet a lot of people wonder "where is everybody?" I have been in commercial printing since 1985, was in commercial web till 1999 when I was recruited to a sheetfed printer. Ran that company till 2015 when the corporate owner family sold all 46 properties. I now run a digital only shop similar to yours. There is now only 3 of us. I do almost everything, from sheet printing on our Ricoh, envelopes on the Xante (will they ever fix their feeding system???) to cutting/boxing/shipping... to doing all of the accounting, most of the job estimating, and all of the prepress work as well. But anyway - the answer to "where is everyone?" -- welcome to small digital shops everywhere. We do it all.

Or, what about an hour long ASMR? I'm sure I would watch the whole thing, just because! It would also fill in a gap. There's like one decent printer ASMR video on YT. Automating your workflow is a move that should benefit your shop & web to print, done right, will grow your biz.. You also mention adding new/used gear and I can see you’re entering a space where inkjet might be on the horizon for consideration. Sheetfed or continuous - sheetfed is the lowest entry point. Canon makes both and you will get PRISMAsync controllers. I don’t work for Canon anymore (retired) and I don’t know where you’re located, but I do know it costs nothing to inquire. You really should. PS: love your channel.

Hi Guys, I need some help with an issue I encountered during the printing process in our POD room in UK. We have a black and white printer (Xerox B9110) that we use to print or internal blocks and it works fine. The issue we have is that the books come wavy when they are finished. I have tried changing grain direction which definitely improved it a bit, but they are still wavy. I know this issue may be a tempereature and humidity related but we have had a constant temperature of 21 degrees celsius during the day and 16 during night with the humidity around 40/45%. The stacks of paper (SRA3) do already come wavy from the printer and they get worse when I perfect bound them. We have a CP BOURG BB3102. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Your help would be much appreciated.

I have not personally use that but our shop has use printsmith for 26 years and could not do with out it. I would say make sure you are raising your prices enough each year / quarter so much of demand can be throttled using price with out having to buy more equipment we have km 3080 I am looking at the 7100 as a possible upgrade.

Hi. Welcome back. In our place we have a konica 1060 and a xerox 700. We used to have a konica 7000. From my experience the xerox is a far more reliable machine and if I was investing in a new machine I'd be looking at a fuji since xerox and fuji parted company. If I had the cash and were printing on uncoated stock I would take a hard look at the kyocera inkjet press. As for Web to print the options are endless and about impossible to work out what will work best long term. We're looking at a plug in called nb designed. But weather it's the best or not is questionable. But it look like an inexpensive root to start with. Nice to see a few videos again and I'm tempted to start doing the same but I'm camera shy lol.

@rallymadboy
@rallymadboy 9 месяцев назад
@@justaprinter I'm not sure on the model I seen at the print show in Birmingham nec. I'll check in the morning. I find the whole thing interesting but the figures I was getting I could put in 2 new xerox, fuijis or konica machines . But also in my location Ireland. There no sales team for the kyocera let alone engineers support. We print mainly on silk / matt stock so it makes it not a good move for us at this time. I've been in this industry since I was 12 working for my dad and he started when he was 18 and he's nearly 70. With 2 heidelberg platens, a gto52, 2 digital machines and a Roland wide format I think we have a machine problem or are gluttons for punishment lol. I think at 15 I ran my first color job on a single colour Thompson mark 2 crown press. As you can guess I love print and I love equipment. Look forward to the next update. If I ever start recording I'll let you know.

We setup a web-to-print site and even made custom portals so our largest clients could see previous orders and get status updates. They told us they preferred email because they needed our input on orders and wanted the personal attention. Web-to-print seems to be better for high volume commodity type work, which isn't where we make money. We switched from a basic database program for job tracking to Printers Plan. We are pretty happy with it. Our little shop spends far more on employees than anything else. We have more work than we can handle, but we could only afford another person if we did more volume. I am too scared to take that leap. I lost my mom who handled our typesetting and book keeping and my father who did paper ordering and managing retired after a stroke. It is overwhelming trying to handle everything. My wife and I are having to handle the books and I realized that even with our tiny shop, we are spending almost $10k/mo on our two digital presses, but almost $20k/mo on our 3 employees.
@justaprinter

curious to know what Printer's Plan is costing you per month, and did they have a costly set up fee? and/or did you have to spend a ton of time entering things in? so many of these companies offer a ton of stuff we don't "need" (that would be cool to have, but not officially needed) - we are trying to find a streamlined simple solution to doing estimates by hand (we used to use a software program in the past but after that computer died we discovered they were out of business so no key code available for a reinstall, so we went back to our old Franklin Estimating Book, until the time came for us to migrate from offset to digital, which is when estimating really slowed down with the lengthy by hand approach) -- we've pondered using MS software (excel, MS Pub, etc) but we are so pressed for time and have never tried to set anything like that up, that we just keep plugging away with what we've been doing, but it really needs to change (my hubby is working 50-60 hr work weeks and neither of us can ever get caught up)

We pay around $60-$70 a month for tech support and updates, which are once or twice per year. We bought printers plan outright back in 2015. They are always trying to sell us on "upgrading" to the cloud hosted version, but it is something like $400/mo or more and if your internet goes out, you can't use it. Before that we had tried Franklin estimating and another one I can't remember. The more sophisticated software was overkill and way out of our price range. Printers plan takes some time to setup, but we have been pretty happy with it. We haven't ever had any problems with it working and it does everything we need. We just started adding jobs to it on a certain date and everything before was never entered into it.@@bjlits9437

Had a Canon copier I bought years ago refurbished. One day, it just stopped working and no techs could do anything about it. A bit disturbing thinking Canon may have just decided to EOL the machines and kill my equipment. On the upside, I ordered a new Konica that should be arriving in the next few weeks. It is only a copier, not a press (quieter and lower quantity). Glad to see your videos are back again.

Yes, it is a huge bummer that someone else can cut you off of running machines. I see what they do it, but I don't like it.

Been moving my shop away from ink presses to completely digital. it gets harder and harder to find parts when they break now. plus we used to get large runs(well for us at least) of 50,000 to 60,000 runs, now a large run is 10,000. ink presses are great for them, but if you dont have huge volume, theres really no more need for ink. why would you want to stand in front of a device that gives off heat, is messy and loud and you have to pa attention to every little thing when you can just load up multiple drawers on a copier and fire and forget and watch a movie

Great to see you back on the tube, I'm in the UK and just upgraded to a new konica c4065 and it just runs and runs and runs, it's the first time I've ever bought brand new and so far i am very impressed for less than £20,000.

On the Canon with the highlights being washed out: on machines with developer in the toner, there's no separate developer housing, so not likely to be a problem there. More likely is that your charge on the drum is too strong and the laser is not forming a good potential to attract the toner. This might be a cloudy glass in the laser, but it's more likely the grid over the corona wires that help make an even charge on the drum. Like you said, clean it all up, and see what happens.

Interesting, I wouldn't be surprised if it was something in the environment, like humidity or dust. Simply because both presses started doing the same things around the same time. I'll mess around with them a bit. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for the update. Sometimes you HAVE to put the most important things first. We have been using Konica Minoltas for the past 10 years or so. We only have one and updates are made when the salesman comes up with a good offer. The service techs are top notch. I think I made a mistake last year when I agreed to go into our bindery department and replace someone who was leaving. I mainly operate the folder and occasionally help with the book machine. Unfortunately, I still have many of the responsibilities that I had outside of pre-press and a lot less time to do them. So much still to learn and understand. Not used to standing all day long either.

Wow, he's back from the dead! I wouldn't give up on the Varioprints, they're still listed under the current Canon catalog. I think it would be worth checking with either Canon or a dealer if they have parts and could look at what's causing the problem. I've had imagerunners before that were EOL but some of the dealers had leftover stock. They were glad to sell the parts they'd otherwise be stuck with so they included labor just for buying the parts. Have you checked with EFI's web to print software? Might make sense since you're machines are running EFI Fiery servers.
@justaprinter
@justaprinter 9 месяцев назад
I tried 3 companes to service the Ultras and nobody could help. The Varioprints should be good for awhile though. I did look at the EFI w2p for a bit. I agree they might be good since I already use EFI.

Look at your machines maximum capacity per month based on normal hours and work days in both color and b/w then compare that to you median or average monthly volume you bill. Then look at whats available and if it will handle your anticipated growth. I have the machine capacity for about 2.8 milion prints per month for cut sheet (8.5x11) and 1.2 million envelopes (#10). I run Ricoh for cut sheet and Quadien/Rena fir envelopes. All of my machines will do both b/w or color as I feel having a dedicated b/w is a waste of valuable floor space when I can have a machine that can do both in the same footprint plus it gives you more redundancy if one machine goes down for service issues. Good luck & do 1 video a month even if its a short one.

Recently bought a Xerox Versalink C600 to pair with my Xerox Versalink B7035, KIP 7170, HP Z5400 and Canon iPF9400S. All but the C600 bought at pennies on the dollar at auction and required minor work. Almost got an Epson SureColor-P8000 recently but went just beyond my pricepoint. Cheers.
