great video as always Jose. I did a spray my canson rag photographique matt paper with Hahnemühle Protective Spray and have to say the results are very neutral.

I will be running several tests on different papers with different sprays and do a video on the results.

In an intensive discussion of print sprays a number of years ago on (I think) the Digital Black and White the Print (Yahoo) group one concern re the solvent based sprays was the strong negative effects of breathing the fumes. The use of highest quality breathing masks ($$$) was recommended for their use. At that time the water based sprays were not found to be very effective in protecting prints. As I recall, Paul Roark was one of the major contributors to this discussion. There hasn't been any discussion on the group re print sprays recently.

Once I get all my materials in, I will proceed and try to compile as good a test as I can. Yes, Solvent based agents would do a better job I think as well. You just have to use protection of do it outside as long as you are not depositing dust on your prints.

You might want to try out Krylon Gallery Series. I found it at the local Hobby Lobby.

Joe, ClearJet spray is promoted by Lexjet: www.lexjet.com/clearjet-original-type-s and Breathing Color does not have a solvent can based spray. Also, Henry Wilhelm has tested Premier Art spray and found it noticeably increases display life: www.wilhelm-research.com/epson/WIR_Ep11880_2010_04_23.pdf I'm glad you were able to use the info.

I'm glad you think so because testing can be a lot of work (and sometimes expensive). Also a complete test of all the sprays has never been done by anyone, so your results will become the go-to standard. BTW, Mark has results for Premier Art and Hahnemuhle sprays on his Aardenburg site. Just put in Premierart and Hahnemuhle in the "coating" slot.

I hear ya! I will not go hog old and only test about 5-6 sprays for the time being. I just got Aardenburg's results of Epson Ultrachrome K3 and HD side by side. I will be taking a look at that this pm.

Hopefully you see this, but do you know of varnishes that stand up to cleaning of inkjet prints with water or PEC-12 emulsion cleaner?
@cheo1949

Sorry but Not familiar with that one.

I'm wondering if print sprays would help keep dye inks from bleeding/running if exposed to water after the print ink dries? Would pigment inks perform better relative to exposure to water? By chance, do you have a video that speaks to possible water damage? I'm looking to make greeting cards, note cards and postcards to sell and am concerned about water damage. Thanks in advance for your help & advice.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 4 года назад
Spraying would protect them. Why are you so worried about water exposure. People who buy your cards should know to not expose your cards to water. But just alleviate your worries... I've taken prints done with both dye and pigment inks and submerged them in water and even rubbed then with my hands without any bleeding. This ONLY applies to resin coated or RC papers. NOT fiber or rag base paper. Nothing you do will help them prevent damage from water.

@@cheo1949 thanks for the info. My concerns are postcards and how the USPS handles mail during bad weather (rainy days). I purchased a Pro-10 to minimize my concern, hoping pigment ink will handle exposure to water better. Your experience with resin coated paper will also be very helpful. I want my mailed postcards (and notecards) to arrive in great condition.

hi, wondering if you or any of your viewers know if these sprays will help print longevity due to handling. (particularly for the photo books I am printing)
@cheo1949

Yes they also do increase abrasion protection.

Am I missing something...isn't that what chroma optimizer is for?
@martykracher

Jose says at the end of the video, that it's for NON oem ink, for longevity. I was wondering myself.
@cheo1949

Sprays are NOT for applying gloss to a print. Although one of the side benefits is that often it will even out inconsistent gloss form not so good third party pigment inks. However the primary reasons for using print sprays is for longevity increase only of those very not so great third party inks.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 лет назад
Oh and Chroma Optimizer or Gloss Optimizers do not increase print longevity in the least. Their only job is to provide better and more even gloss.
