Printer Fumes Gone - Designing and 3d Printing a Vent - 3D Printer Ventilation System

The 3d printer fumes really get to me. So I designed and printed a ventilation box with an integrated fan. In this video I go over the desin, show what went wrong, and print it and install it in the wall.

About the files:
The prints I did here I accidentally exported on Medium quility instead of High quality. So that's why the circles and curves are a little rough. The files on Thingiverse were re-exported for better quality.
Also I designed this with .5 mm clearance everywhere. This was an overkill. .25 would have been good enough. I tweaked some of this before posting on Thingiverse.
I also added screw holes to the outer corners of the baseplate as an option to use those.
Also note that while I didn't show it in the video I did use anchors in the drywall.
Finally - Newer versions of the Transform printer have 3 fans blowing in and only one blowing out. So in that case you would only need to print one of the adapters and you'd probably want to cap the extra intake on the vent. Or use it for a 2nd printer.

Amazing effort on your part. If I had done it, there would have been a lot less CAD and a lot more duct tape. Once completed, I would have hailed my silvery spagetti-wire creation as an engineering masterpiece, pounded my chest, and declared myself master of the universe. I'm surprised you were able to make such a large functional part from an SLA printer, really that project falls much more comfortably in FDMs wheelhouse.

I would do this on my FDM was exactly what I was thinking. If I had to do it on my SLA I would slow the print for a longer exposure and use a fiber resin. Not sure if this would help but that's my first thought.

I have my resin printer (Shuffle XL) in IKEA's "bostrak" wardrobe, along with all of the resin bottles and the ultrasonic cleaner. It really helps to contain be mess!

Quick tip for CAD, try extruding the feature right where you want them instead of making a rectangle then moving it. It also allows changes to be made later on without having to re-do the entire model. Also, use the shell feature for parts like this.

Fusion 360 also lets you use parameters as dimension values. Then you can just change the parameters any time and it recalculates the features automatically.

Thanks for making this video. I've been thinking about getting into 3d printing and your videos are super helpful. I was going to put my printer in my office (spare bedroom) but after watching this I'm thinking about putting it in my garage next to my Glowforge. That way I can hook up an exhaust hose and share the Glowforges air filter.

Great video. Excellent content and clearly and well printed, oops, presented. Just fyi, it is usual to drill pilot holes for wood screws, even if using in wood. There are charts online specifying the drill bit size corresponding to the screw size. Keep the good stuff coming!

Regarding your collision detection question. There is a simpler way to see that hidden area. If you are sliding in a panel from top to bottom on your fusion 360 display, click upper right menu "Inspection". From there click 'Section Analysis' in the drop down menu. Now rotate your part a little and click on a wall/ surface on the right side of the main housing. Using the arrow, you will be able to view that panel moving down from the side, and when it bottoms out.

Pretty cool. I bought little filter ventilators from Anycubic for 23 dollars. You get 2 of them and they recharge battery on UBS. I am using ABS like resin, and I haven't really even noticed the smell or fumes from it, unless I get my face super near it. I have had more of an issue with the Alcohol. IPA, Denatured and E85 all make me dizzy, and or give me headaches, and contact high issues, so I have ventilated the hell out of the room and where a Paint Filter Respirator mask whilst performing the cleaning activities. That has fixed the problems. Also I noticed that the video is over 2 years old and the advice is still relevant, but I do think that they have developed some resins that are way less fume producing than what was being used even 2 years ago. In fact Anycubic brags as a selling point that their resins are 65 to 80% less fumy than the competition/their older stock, The shelf life is 18 months to 2 years as compared to other companies/their older resins, etc. I have some standard resin coming from them, so I can compare it to the ABS like resin from them when it gets here. Clever design on your unit there. I just think I am going to put in the dryer vent with the bug screen, and run 4 in flex hose not to the machine directly but I might hose off the vent fans to the collection area. IDK, at the moment. I might make a video about it. I have to get my camera mike working first. The last video I made about cleaning and printing I had to edit over on the other channel because my camera wasn't picking up the sound. I did something similar. But made to fit beside a window AC unit, and it also ties in with the exhaust from my airbrush booth. Used my Ender 3 FDM though. i don't like using resin for such large parts unless you need the detail/surface finish, too costly.

I was thinking rubber seals for around the lip of the printer mounts, and maybe a charcoal activated filter somewhere along your vent, but that may hinder getting fumes out of your space. Thanks, very informative video.

I love your videos and this design is great but I don’t think the PC fans push enough air. They’re not designed to handle the head pressure added by the ducts. I recommend upgrading to a duct fan with controllable speed. I turn it up before opening the lid to minimize the fumes I come in contact with.

This printer had light fumes. So the pc fan gently pulled them out. The fan in that printer is also just a pc fan. If you attach it to a high power fan it would be too much suction and would make the internal fan spin too fast which could cause electrical damage to the motherboard. If this were sucking smoke out from a laser cutter you’d be right that it wouldn’t be enough.

Excellent design, setup and functionality of this system.. good work my friend.... I just wanted to put out there that SIRAYA Tech is producing awesome quality resins at amazing prices and truly have ultra Low Odor... I have printed some incredibly detailed strong and beautiful prints with it -and my faith in printing useful engineering quality components with a home SLA is restored. Thanks so much for this video.... I like this idea to vent the heat from my standard 3D printer enclosure when I print ABS :) PS. I am using grow tents for 3D printers now and ventilation is important for me and all these machines. So this may be my best alternative to cutting a hole in my ceiling (attic). Thanks Again- Jeff

Great video - came to this after watching your other video on Resin Handling tips. Looking for off the shelf solutions to venting and filtration, I find it odd that no hobbyist grade printers incorporate any sort of modular and/or heavy duty filtration or venting add ons. I know I'd be interested.

Absolutely awesome make! I could see using some liquid tape around the edge of the magnetic box just to create a bit of a gasket. But that's because I love finding any excuse to use liquid tape on every project haha

Please use metal rings for tighter fits on the hose, and also, I am not quite sure a magnetic connection is really enough to make it airtight enough to not leak air and thus also fumes.

I know this is over a year old , , but if you ever remake this , don't epoxy the screen directly to the housing and the fan. instead put some wax paper between the screen pat and clamp it in place while the epoxy cures . when the epoxy is done , remove the screen part and the wax paper from it . you should now have a nice smooth perfect fit between the 2 and you can simply remove the fan to clean / wash the screen . Great stuff man, I have been FDM for years just getting to resin now myself.

SirayaTech Fast Grey 70% + Siraya Tech Tenacious 30% will give you VERY durable parts. Its my go to mix for pretty much everything

Brilliant design and execution, but personally I wouldn't have glued the fan power connection into the baseplate so it could all be replaced easier if the fan failed...

If it failed I figured I’d cut the wire up a ways from the plug and crimp on a connector. And then do the same to the replacement fan. The plug wasn’t going to hold good enough in the case. Which is why I glued it.

I got it on a Kickstarter which has ended: www.kickstarter.com/projects/phrozenmake/phrozen-transform-the-lcd-3d-printer-that-lets-you It was 1699 plus extras so mine out the door was $1800 USD. Technically it isn't SLA. It's LCD which doesn't have a laser. Instead it uses an LCD panel to expose UV light to the entire slice at once.

@Nerdtronic Re: Design. You mention that the fumes "just sit there," which implies (I think) that they are heavier than the surrounding air and therefore sink. You've also bored your exit pipe low in the wall, at, or even below table height (I think), and perhaps in order to remove them lower down because that demands less of your fans lifting or pulling them, in the case that your vents were higher up, perhaps even far overhead. So I conclude your print room is at ground level. Could you give advice to those of us who might be printing perhaps in a basement, or just in a half basement (halfway above ground)? Draw or push fumes up to a ceiling level vent, or take them out down low? As low as we can reasonably do anyway? Thx for any reply.

I THINK (not positive) that you are removing non-resin air to the outside. I think those fans are cooling electronics in the lower part of the machine which is separate from the resin chamber. To remove resin fumes properly, you need a hole in the side of your machine, directly accessing the build chamber. I'm new to these machines, so I could be wrong.

Any chance you could make a 2 1/2'' version of the Hose Adapter, trying to vent my ELEGOO Saturn, and all other venting makes on here are too large for my ender 3 v2 to print, this would be perfect if it was just a bit smaller, I'd just scale it but then the magnets wouldn't fit, current 4'' would just be too big for the Saturn.

Does curing give off enough fumes to warrant its own hood? Or should I cure underwater? I have a grow tent with a carbon filter and fan that’s vented to outside for my printers but everything else (wash and cure, garbage) is all out in the open. My lungs and throat are killing me and I don’t know what to do

Great design. How is it working out for you? @ 5:50 for long, thin leading/trailing edges like this that are prone to warp, it's always best to add a continuous line of supports.

It's been working good. Honestly I hardly ever wear a mask in there any more. The resin fumes mostly get sucked out.

Have you run into longterm problems? Im not sure if its best to have your fresh air pulling from the same spot you vent... It seems like this would cause longterm issues...

The vents in the base of your printer are for keeping the electronics and UV LEDs cool. The resin fumes do not exit from the vents. You wasted a lot of time and resin.

Have you had issues with long flat parts warping when printed at a 30 degree angle? I feel like my supports were sufficient but do you have to go like really overboard?

Hm I dont get it yet. Most SLA Printer have Fans to cool the UV Lamps. Normally there is no Fan blowing Resin Fumes around. So I am not quite sure what this will help. I am rather thinking of building a Enclosure around the printer and venting this or doing a similar setup, like its used for kitchens or for airbrushing.

So my printer does have a vent inside the print chamber with a small filter in it. That connects down to where the electronics are. The filter doesn't do much. Most of the air can easily just go around it. And then it has fans that suck air in to the electronics portion of it and out of there. But yeah fumes do get sucked from inside the print chamber out the two out vents. When I added this vent system it got rid of most of the resin fumes in my print room. I can be in there now with no mask on without getting the headaches I was getting before.

I still love the transform. And the fumes are no problem now that the vent is in there. I don't wear a mask in my print room.

Good idea. I found some resin that would work to print a custom gasket like that. It's called F69 and I use it in the Cup Holder Robot video.

the epoxy was likely overkill for sealing off the screen... simple tube of silicon would do just as good a job in this instance

That printer put resin fumes out those vents. A lot of the printers I’m using now don’t. So actually I’ve been printing in my office a lot this year. Although sometimes get complaints from the family about the smell - when I have the lid open or whatever. So that printer is still hooked up that way and it did help a lot. But don’t use that printer much at the moment.

My lawyer told me to say "read the resin data sheet" :) The IPA fumes are flamable but I don't think the resin fumes are.

I've been doing a lot of research on VoCs produced by resin printers, youve got a great solution , but i wonder if an air quality meter would still pick up any residual VOCs from the other vents in the printer or if any fumes come out of those vents at all

If I remember right they're 4" holes. They fit the hose I was able to find at home depot or lowes.

In consideration of the neighbors' health, it would be better to look into carbon filters. Make some sort of casing and run the fumes through as many filters as needed until you can't smell anything coming out the other end. Then, instead of releasing fumes into the air, let them find their way to a landfill ensconced in a filter when the filter gets saturated.
