Interesting video one correction is the air conditioner compressor runs off the 200-volt battery and only the a/c fan runs off the 12v battery.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this to the world. I wonder if you can get better mileage charging main 12V battery by the solar panels? It's too hard to tap into the traction battery pack, but your solar setup is more than enough to top off the 12V battery.

I hinged rigid panels to my pt Cruiser GT on both sides of cargo box. Quick disconnect, reversible, collapses and secures under box for storage. Front rack has deflector to reduce drag. Can drive with panels vertical at 50 mph no prob.

I'm wondering if I could use the foldable solar panels plugged into a Jackery 240 system or something similar and have that run the 12v fridge or something along those lines? Thanks again for your amazing videos.

There are after market solar kits made specifically for the Prius. It’s built inside the roof behind a sheet of glass.

From the Prius Forum: The AC compressor is running on ~230VDC HV system power.
@yvairguy
@yvairguy 5 лет назад
The ac compressor is a 200v 3 phase scroll compressor that runs off the inverter with power supplied from the traction battery.

I like it, but what can you do with the power? Can you run microwave or fridge or is it just a supplemental charge for the battery? Also, did you give a summary of the cost of the equipment? That is often the deciding factor... Thanks for all you do!
@z50king29
@z50king29 2 года назад
The AC runs straight off the HV battery. I'm sure you can find a converter that will charge your HV from solar to 200V

Hey man, a note on the solar panel losing power when a portion is covered up. This is a common problem for hobby panels. There are basically 2 kinds you can get, one where the cells are wired in series, and another where they are wired in parallel. The series ones are cheaper and simpler, and so, probably more common. However, those are the kind that have this issue. The entire panel is only as good as its weakest cell, so the entire panel needs maximum solar exposure. If even one cell is covered up, it blocks the others from working. It's a bit like your dad's ancient christmas lights, where if one light bulb burns out, the whole strip stops working. There are panels available that have cells wired in series. You may be able to find a similar sized folding panel for not much more that is wired in parallel. Not only will it work better in inconsistent lighting, but it will probably produce more power in nearly all conditions overall, because each cell individually can output its own power. I plan on looking for parallel cells for this reason when I go shopping. I dont feel like dealing with fickle solar panels.
@tangible3923

Not sure if you are still monitoring your older videos, but do you still reccomend these panels and what 1000W or 1500W pure sine wave solar power station or generator would you recommend to work with these panels? Just want a simple solar generator that can run a 3qt Instant pot and an Alpicool 20 quart refrigerator. Miss your Prius videos. Thank you!

Thanks for doing this, I love the stuff you put out...I have been thinking about doing just this and want to use a lithium battery, any pointers? Also, I may need to increase the watts someday, can you join two of these panels together?
@timdillen
@timdillen 6 лет назад
Thanks for your kind comments. I have been watching lithium battery packs but they have been out of my price range so I have not done much research on them. I know they require a particular charger that is specific to lithium batteries so connecting them to the Prius system would be a problem. A stand alone lithium system would be great. You can connect two of these panels together just make sure the solar charger you have can handle 240 watts or 20 amps (30 would be better).Thanks for watching!

I was thinking I’d like a rigid solar panel on the roof of my Prius V ( they don’t slope down in back. ) But I’m worried about the lift mainly and the gas mileage secondly. So I’m thinking of constructing a small trailer with a solar panel for roof and walls. It would be very light weight. ( PS, I need the power for my job. ) What do you think ?
@raysills
@raysills 6 лет назад
I recall once seeing a Prius at the car dealership where my son works, that had what appeared to be a factory-installed solar panel on the roof of the car. It was identically sized to fit the roof, but it clearly was a solar panel. I haven't seen one since, so I don't know if it really was a factory option or an after-market add-on that fit perfectly. Still, it struck me as a great thing to have for a Prius... even if you aren't using your car as a dwelling. ;)
@timdillen
@timdillen 6 лет назад
The did have an expensive option for a solar roof but sadly it only powered a ventilation fan to keep your car cool when parked. I think they should have fed the power to the 12v battery even if it was not much. Thanks for your comments and for watching!
@raysills
@raysills 6 лет назад
I agree... all well and good to power a vent fan, but why not harvest some photons to recharge the 12 V battery? I'm sure that vent fan ran on 12 V... everything but the drive motor does.

How has your system held up? A setup like this seems like it would kill the life of all batteries involved. Debating between a setup like this or using a DC charge controller to manage your charge

In my budgets,limited energy,limited expire date of battery(1-3years),limited size and weights, for most of important thing is heating,so I like your ways to put it in side,but seems like big for inside.2 mall one for back packers, front and back is what I think,and very limited using electric thing for emergency case.Very mini size of refrigerator, 12 volt use(on and off with ice use for reality or 3 big batteries for small RV ,whatever not working like house one so),basically on and off is safe for using short expire date battery for emergency case.

It has been fun to size down to just the basic needs. I ended up taking out the microwave as I did not use it enough. That freed up some needed space.

Question re your window solar unit: can you hook this directly to a Goal Zero or Chafon portable battery storage unit? I want to drill as few holes as possible and buy the least equipment possible. I currently just take my Chafon in a gym bag and plug it in at a Starbucks while I drink coffee and work, but if I can use solar, it allows me more flexibility and freedom. P.S. I follow all your PRIUS related videos and learn a great deal (but I don't expect to move up to an ambulance soon!
@timdillen
@timdillen 5 лет назад
Heheh! I never thought I would be in an ambulance either! Yes, you can use the panels to charge a battery unit, just make sure you have a plug where you can splice in the positive and negative wires into your storage unit. The unit in the video just comes with the bare wires.

Thank you for this. Another question I have is how do you lock your doors when your sleeping in your Prius, since it would open with the keyless entry and you have the key in the car with you??
@timdillen
@timdillen 6 лет назад
That was an odd little thing (and I do have the keyless system). So with my car - I get in the back seat. I then reach to the driver's door and press the door lock button. Then all the doors stay locked for the night. There is also an override switch under the steering wheel that turns off the keyless system but I don't have to resort to that. I don't know if this will work for later years but does for the Gen 2's through 2009. Hope that helps for your situation.
@lynnjacob444
@lynnjacob444 5 лет назад
@@timdillen, my 2016 does the same thing. It would not be prudent for a manufacturer to make it such that a car's doors could not be locked from the inside. My car will scream like a banshee if I try to get out with the key inside, though!

Good Video. at 2.58 it shows a good diagram of how Prius Works. what confuses me is on diagram on Display in the Prius is that the 12v Battery or the Hybrid Battery????. Because some other Videos from Toyota it talks about the Hybrid Battery.. and how you connected Solar to the 12v, will that damage the Hybrid Battery in long run???
@timdillen
@timdillen 6 лет назад
That is a good question. I was very concerned about hurting the electrical system. I used the exact same Toyota battery that the car had and just doubled that. The computer can't tell the difference from my experience. The solar panel is connect directly to the 2nd 12v battery and should not be noticed by the car computers, I had the car in storage 3 months on a battery charger and everything was fine. I believe the hybrid drive battery can only send power one way to the 12v battery but the test did raise questions. This car is so smart and well designed I am betting it will be ok but time will tell. On the diagram the battery right next to the engine is the hybrid battery. I try not to use that term as the 12v battery is also a proprietary hybrid battery. It has features of a deep cycle and starting battery as told to be my two different auto parts stores (the electrical video goes into that more). Thanks for your questions and for watching!
@4114mantis
@4114mantis 6 лет назад
yes. sorry i didnt see your second battery. but from your reaction where you disconnect the solar and bars were going fast does raise questions alright, and not sure if Toyota would give us the correct answer, because you may of done a life hack, lol. because yeah if your invention worked There will be more Pruis on roads. im in New Zealand and Prius are used for Uber,
@timdillen
@timdillen 6 лет назад
I have pondered what Toyota will think of people sleeping all night with their car's engine kicking on an off. I would think they would stay silent worrying if someone was going to keep the hatch open and poison their self. I hope someday they will send me a new one for a conversion! That's awesome your are in New Zealand - heard it is a beautiful country.

I know you don't want to drop to a 50w panel, but if you used a smaller panel, couldn't you use it while driving as well? Wouldn't that compensate for it being a smaller panel?
@timdillen
@timdillen 6 лет назад
I did check on the 50 watt panels and they would definitely fit on the dash much better. I did not calculate if two 50's might fit better - that might be worth checking into. I think there is one 50 what might could stay on the dash all the time (would probably get 25 watts out of it with windshield filtering). I have been happy with how efficient the Prius is at charging the two 12v batteries while I drive. Best I can tell, If I drive the car about 20 min a day it charges up the batteries enough to keep the fridge happy and charge the electronics. It's when I don't drive the car every day that the panels would help the best. Thanks for your ideas and for watching!
