Part 1 ( • Private Honda Tour wit... ) of our tour of the private Honda Museum featured the early days of the HRC motorcycles, Part 2 of our Honda Works Bikes Tour with Dave Arnold includes more goodness and touches on the end of the works bikes and the beginning of the production rule which many in the sport thought would end Honda’s machinery advantage but instead, widened it. There’s no better guide than former HRC Honda Team Manager Dave Arnold to take us down this memory lane of when the Red Riders were the team to beat.

Dave Arnold Pods 1&2 and these vids 1&2 are the best content you have ever put out. Have been following and or partaking in the sport since ‘77 and this nails the roots right up to the development we enjoy now. So good

Outstanding! On all fronts. Great back drop at Honda Headquarters. Great questions to lead and shape the interview, which can make or break you really. But even more greatness makes itself apparent when Dave rips off his answers like all these events happened last weekend. Amazing memory to say the least. The engineers behind the scenes need to be brought into the limelight much more. Yes, the riders are the ones in our faces, getting noticed, all part of the marketing process, which drives sales and ultimately creates the budgets for R&D, but man, the “Dave’s” of racing really are hero’s. Nuff said.

Absolutely amazing interview! I graduated in 81 and lived in antelope valley. Met Bob Hannah out in the desert as well as many others. Best era bikes will ever have!

True free enterprise was damaged with the 1986 production rule, and destroyed by the EPA forced 4-stroke. Now, we make and buy what a dictatorship desires, and boy does it cost the industry, (any industry).

#25 Bob Hannah’s 85 RC 250 🤘 Talking about Bars, Bob only ride Answer bars, long time relationship with Answer. but Renthal was 86, 85 was Bobs last year on Honda.

Really a great interview. Dave was the guy behind it, getting it done, with Roger. I'm guessing David Bailey was his favorite rider? He's too diplomatic to say. Great historically accurate info. Well done and thank you.

One hell of a history lesson. I really appreciated it because I was around when the Honda Elsie came out. It was all about moving those shocks forward and an FMF pipe and you had a very competitive MX bike for any given Sunday.

I remember riding my friend's '74 125 Elsinore without much experience and it scarred the crap out of me. This got me hooked, although I never owned a Honda (apart from a quad that I won). I still have old magazines with Dave Arnold getting a lot of ink, along with Marty Smith and Tommy Croft. Honda's works bikes were the ultimate and Dave Arnold is such a laid- back interview, along with having such a great memory concerning these bikes. His HOF induction is well deserved. Only wish they had one of the early Type ll's on display.

I did a bit of engine work to my 1988 CR250, not much. I just cleaned up the ports a bit, added epoxy to the rear hooks, and put as big of a radius on the HPP finger keepers, (not the valves themselves, but what they slid in and out of), as I could and not open a gap when the fingers were closed, and lowered the gearing 2 teeth on the rear and used the stock pipe. It was still soft on the bottom (like compared to my 97 KX250 for sure), but that thing was the fastest 250 I ever had from the mid range on up. I always got a great start with it and it was the only bike I won races on. It had to be over 45hp, maybe getting close to 50. I know my 2019 YZ250 2-stroke, (stock, claimed 45hp) would not touch it. I think it was the fastest bike I ever had. The only thing I did not like about it was pretty bad fork dampening, a tendency to head shake, (stiffer springs helped a lot), and a linkage bolt that would bend.

There are two bike manufacturers above the rest to me: Honda & TM Racing. These two bike brands are the best I've ever owned, and they make me happy even when I can't ride them - it's like a double marriage almost! lmbo I'll take the Honda 450 and the TM Racing 300 2 stroke to the very end of internal combustion engine dirt bikes, and hopefully 30-40 years longer!!!!! 💪 Guess after that I'll get a Stark Future Varg...but I won't like it as much...smh

It seemed to me after working in the Mt. Bike industry, that frame material did not make much difference when it came to weight, especially when comparing aluminum to chrome molly steel. (Ti. and carbon fiber may have had a bit of a weight advantage.). As it turned out, aluminum is about 1/3rd the weight of steel by volume, but they had to use about 3 times as much to match the strength of steel.

....according to either RJ or Bailey, what really happened to O'Mara is that Suzuki offered a more lucrative contract for 1987 compared to what Honda were offering.

Dave is amazing, Steve, buddy you need to work on your knowledge of motocross history before 1980, there is way too much that brings context to the rest of motocross history. It was called the golden era of motocross for a reason.

I hope you have find Dave's 3 wheeler counter part at hrc team honda... anybody know Bob "ace" Williams???? I know there was rivalry between 2 and 3 wheels but I hope to see a sit down like this for the ATC team leaders

@@stayathome2 Not saying that I would own either one. But my dad has a photo with Dave and the HRC teams all together, back from the late 80s. There are three guys in that photo that ran the Baja 1000 on a 3 wheeler. I can't even imagine how brutal that would have been.

We are stupid. We can't figure out that after team USA won 5 MXofN years in a row, that it was the FIM who pushed for the 1986 production rule "in the USA only" to stop bike factory development in the USA. Yamaha still made works bikes, so that argument is false. And the AMA is just an arm of the FIM. Can we stop being stupid? I guess not.
