DPE Pilot examiner Jason Blair gives Aviation News Talk podcast host Max Trescott a mock Private Pilot checkride and asks him typical oral exam checkride questions. This is also a great review for your Flight Review or BFR! Max pretends to have brought a Cessna 172/G1000 to the checkride. They talk about required documents, aircraft systems, rules and regulations, and a cross country trip that Max prepared prior to the checkride.

If you're reading this and you're worried about the checkride.. I promise, you've been training so hard for this... and YOUVE GOT THIS!! You're nervous because you care! They don't expect you to know everything, just a general understanding of safety and confidence in yourself as a pilot. Ofc you gotta know a few sections from the far/aim (those chapters in the aim can be helpful) I passed my checkride 06/06/21.. good luck on your journey fellow airmen!

Just passed my check ride, October 1st, 2021. I was extremely nervous going into the exam, both oral and flight portions. Trust me when I say, the DPE wants to see you succeed. Nerves are a good thing, and that shows the DPE that you care about your future in aviation, which goes distances.

I’ll never forget my PPL checkride. It was honestly an emotionally taxing day and I’m not generally emotional in nature. All that bloody hard work prior to the check was finally being put to the test. I literally slept 1.5 hours the night before because I couldn’t fall asleep. I was so bloody nervous and excited. To be honest, the flying was the easiest part and I was entirely too stressed over something that wasn’t all that difficult. To be fair, I spent over 100 hours flying and studying before I would even consider a checkride. Great video and great example of what to expect. Cheers!

Took my checkride in 2007. Prepped my 172, grabbed the papers out of it and went inside and 3 hours later passed the sit down portion. We walked outside and watched my plane get towed into the maintenance shop. He pulled me to the side and said i had 15 minutes to prep another plane and go get the papers for it so he could look them over. All the while my instructor was freaking out and yelling at the maintenance guys for taking the plane seeing it was scheduled for me. The plane had all the bells and whistles and i’d only flown it twice in 6 months. Way over my head. We flew for 2 hours and i talked my way through it. On final he simulated engine failure and we were on top of the airport. I circled around and dumped the flaps. Way too fast for his liking but i pushed the nose over and hesitated for the last setting. Hesitation got me my license. If i’d dumped full flaps 2 seconds quicker i’d failed. I passed. Anybody can do it. Everybody is fallible. Talk your way through it. Keep learning and good luck.

Oh, tip for aircraft owners. The limit on pilot servicible parts only applies to standard category air worthyness certs, standard cat planes (below a certain size) are eligible for a primary category air worthyness cert, with primary you the pilot-owner can do most maintenance tasks. And it can later be converted back to standard (maybe to make selling easier) by having the normal A&P maintenance required of the standard category. (maint logs should still be kept for best results)

MAKE SURE TO READ PART 2 first PART 3 43:19 fuel system C172 R mid 90’s How much fuel do we hold? Sp models 56 gal. and 53 usable Gravity feed no need of a fuel pump In the older 172 we do have a supplemental system Fuel vents, both 172 caps are vented because as fuel gets consume in the tank that’s important because as fuel gets consumed in the tank is going to leave a bit of a vacuum in there it’s kind of like if you were draining water out of a two and a half gallon water jug and air has to force its way back up the same path that the water is flowing out. So often you’d poke a hole in the top of those water jugs well the fuel caps act like that hole it’s the vent that lets air come into the fuel tank so that we don’t create a vacuum and there's also a third fuel. 44:41 And there is also a thief fuel vent which is going to be behind the strut on the pilot side of the airplane just underneath the left wing there So we got three different ways to let air into the system, it’s going to flow though a three or four position valve that allow us to be either in the both position left or right or to shut it off and then from there it’s going flow through gascalator which is kind of our final filtering element before it flows into the engine. 45:13 we are no looking for to be an engineer or e mechanic but that you have a general understanding of the system What kind of fuel can I put in? 100LL low lead 46:11 How are you going to test the fuel? 13 sampling points a big increase from the old ones where we had just 3 total Drain for 5 points underneath each wing and 3 points underneath the fuselage and ill be checking periodically to make sure that they’re up blue and ill also be looking to see if there is any dirt or water that could be accumulated down in the bottom of the fuel strainer 45:53 how long pull be gonna burn per hour or how long thats gonna take us? Do we burn off both tanks at the same time? Specially if we’re in an aircraft that has a switching tank requirement or fuel imbalance possibilities 47:14 lets talk about the flaps How do they work and what do they do? No every airplane has them? What do flaps do for us? 3 positions 10* 20*30* degrees. Add certain amount of lift and drag reduce stall speed of aircraft Apply them for landing or for some type of take off The center of lift is going to change just a little be on the wing so the aircraft is going to pitch a little be different every time we had some of those flaps Changes our stall speed, what is our stall with flaps up Is a higher or lower when we put plas down = it should be lower which is good because we would like to touch down at a slower speed 49:10 Flap malfunction Circuit breaker was popping out and flaps did not extend what is happening here? I don’t want to hold the circuit breaker in so I can put the flaps down because that can cause an electrical fire. We might have a brief momentary overload when the flaps are being operated so we might consider resetting that circuit breaker one time if it pops out again hands off leave it alone, but the flaps are operated electrically in this particular aircraft so we are having an electrical overload land with flaps up and of course with a faster landing speed and a higher stall speed
@Tanglangfa
@Tanglangfa Год назад
If flaps malfunction and runway is short, will the tower divert you/suggest another airport with a longer runway or do you have to find it yourself? I haven’t started yet, just trying to find out what I’m getting myself into. Thanks!

Great podcast and info. Check ride coming up in the near future. Clearly 'Max' is not an avg student pilot and has amazing knowledge. One thing I don't hear about much is... Lets say an avg guy like me during the oral questioning of the private pilot check ride (before flight) has an area that the kind of mess up or struggle to get out, but knows the content. How does that go from a testing stand point? Immediate fail? Test over and they inform you you failed that portion (like during the flight if you fail a maneuver)? I have heard DPEs have to accept the first answer and you cant change it? Or is it like the steep turn scenario you did on this podcast where a little balk in altitude and you show a good adjustment/correction and the follow up questions confirm the knowledge so you are good? I can't seem to find much about the oral part when the student doesn't have the perfect answer. Does the conversation continue? Most videos everyone seems to know all the material in great and exact detail. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
@khorquinn135
@khorquinn135 2 года назад
Months late on this one, I know. Personally, my DPE knew I took my studying seriously. If I answered incorrectly, he would point me in the right direction, even if that was saying I got the answer incorrect. He was very patient, and allowed me to refer to the FAR AIM or POH as necessary. Of course, at the end of the day, all DPEs are different, and would handle the same situation uniquely. Failing someone taking their checkride for a missed knowledge question seems counterproductive to me; instead, making it a lesson you would never forget would be much more helpful.

@AviationNewsTalk
@AviationNewsTalk 3 года назад
I think a DPE might acknowledge that "Yes, that's a reasonable solution," but in this case I'd like you demonstrate that you can find the airport on your own. There's never a problem with initially proposing a simple solution on a checkride. You might get lucky and the DPE might accept it. But prepared to do it a different way if they don't accept it!

You should be able to build a flight plan and get the weather well within 36hrs.
