Fun fact, if the demon core was left closed it wouldn't have resulted in a nuclear explosion, there just isn't the right material and construction for that. Instead what would have happened is a lot of heat, enough to melt the plutonium hemispheres and the table they're on, and probably make it too hot to breath.
