Great camera angles and clear explanations make this video really good. Also love to see the details on screen of where to get the parts/manuals and just help for any boat owner who might want to know a bit more or tackle some jobs themselves.

Very much appreciated. Just bought an old PRM150 and will be looking to strip it and refurbish this summer. Hopefully going on the back of a Beta 20 or 25 in a 32 foot sailboat. Very good video - clear description of what's beeing seen, nice amiable style and most importantly giving time for things to sink in. Don't worry about editing glitches - content is key and your video does exactly what it says on the tin! Cheers

Great video. I have a 150 and in the last couple of weeks it started to drip oil. I'm pretty sure it's from the gear selector seal. I've been told that this is common for the O ring to perish, and a straight forward fix. I'll hopefully get it done next week, but even though I was trying to monitor oil levels, yesterday I lost drive, but came back with a top up of oil. Hopefully I haven't damaged it? I find it virtually impossible to read those dipsticks!
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049 2 года назад
Yes the common issues will be the control valve O ring. Loosing oil will prevent the pump being able to collect oil from the sump and hence the clutches will not be engaged when you try. In my opinion once every say 6-10 years you should open the box and change the seals and gaskets. Inspect all the parts. Some oils cause the O rings to become brittle and loose there soft rubbery nature. This causes oil bypass. The newest hydraulic actuated boxes have a new oil control valve seal. The process to change them is a title more involved. But easy enough with the right know how.

Hi Darren. Thanks for video. What was the symptom of the worm out clutch pack that would let you know it is wearing?
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049 2 года назад
Hi James, I know this box was used on a widebeam narrow boat. And I think it was used to tow another narrow boat. A combination of age and abuse would do this extent of damage. I also think it's a good idea to flush these boxes after say 5 years use. Just the get rid of any fine particles of matter. I had a PRM260 to strip and asses. It was thought a clutch had failed when in fact a small piece of swarf got caught in the oil control rings which take the positive oil feed. This caused a major drop in oil pressure and hence a failure to drive ahead. Also to note if you have foul on the propeller this will of course stress the clutches. Using the wrong oil is also a bad use if these. The only other thing I can suggest is poor workmanship may cause a premature failure. Hope that helps

Very intuitive thanks. I got a new boat with one of this gearbox. Planning to change oil...cant see well the sump way. Do you think i can get all the oil out thruw the drainplug with a oil pump?
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049 Год назад
With a vacuum pump and a plastic pipe you can get most of it out. The only slight disadvantage is not being able to clean the magnet on the sump nut.

Hi Darren , so glad you have a video on this PRM 150 . Mine was purchased new in 2018. I have an oil leak along the bottom join where the front and rear gear case is bolted together . I notice that there is no gasket or seal in your video. Is it common to have it leaking from this join ? Thanks
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049 2 года назад
There is no gasket for the casings it's normally a sealing compound. The case is a sofas precisely mills you shouldn't need much there. My usual preferences the use wellseal. I have used different types of compound for when I apply it on very very very staring I don't like to slap it on because it is all over the place and makes a mess you need to make sure the casing is flat and no dents or chips and just give it a life polish if need be.

Hi again, I've forgotten where there the trust washer (a washer with two grooves in it) goes, where does it go? I've just replaced the reverse clutch pack. Is grease added around the bearings, if so which kind? (i haven't replaced these but can see what looks like grease around them) Do you use a press to press the main drive bearing back on, is there a safe technique? Do you use Loctite glue on the threads? There was some on mine when I tried to remove it which made it very tough to remove. May I shall make a video of me putting this all back together, just want to make sure I’m doing it right first 😊 Thanks for your time

Can I please ask you about the Newage PRM gearbox? This particular one has a screw on type oil filter, apparently you can't get them anymore and there is a blanking plate MT0035 which I have bought. It has a steel washer, a fibre washer and a small white plastic thingy and I don't know how it goes together. Have you done these or know where I can get a replacement filter please? Many Thanks, John
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049 2 года назад
Looking at the kit it suggest to put the small plastic ring on the threaded bolt, the fiber washer goes on first with the steel washer after, this being held on by bolt. The plastic washer/sleeve is the seal the threads. If in doubt speak to PRM as they can better advise. ***Below is pulled from online*** "The oil filter fitted to early PRM gearboxes is now obsolete. Factory advice is to remove the old filter and fit this blanking kit instead. The original inclusion of a filter in the specification was soon deemed to be unnecessary, and from models 101 and 310, no oil filter was fitted. This kit will replace PRM oil filters MT279 and MT926 on PRM gearbox models: PRM 100, PRM 140, PRM 175, PRM 250 and PRM 265 gearboxes".

I have this gearbox on a Beta 10 hp engine. Suddenly I’ve just lost forward and reverse. Some people at my boat club seem to think this was caused by river bind weed caught on the prop. But I’m wondering after speaking to another guy, he tends to think it’s the clutch not engaging !! I’m a total notice when it comes to engines and need advice on a plan of action, do you have any initial thoughts as a possible cause ?? Your help would be much appreciated………… fantastic vlog I’m now a new subscriber, so pleased I found this information 👍🏽

Which model is yours? Common fault is the oil control ring inside the selection valve. Usually can be done is situ.

@@dhcrouchmarineltd3049 I have a PRM 150D. I have identified the leak as coming from the input drive, the selector valve is all dry. Not sure which bolts to attack now. Beta’s manual is not helping me too much.

@@MrKyzla OK so, the input shaft is the shaft which sits into the drive plate inside the bell housing. The output shaft is the part which connects to the propeller shaft or flexible coupling. Feel free to send me a picture.

Hi ya, nice to have a look inside. I seem to have a issue with mine not going into neutral, it will go from forward to reserve but when the control is in neutral it slightly engages reverse. Any ideas why? It may have slightly too much oil in it Thanks
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049
@dhcrouchmarineltd3049 2 года назад
This suggest the astern clutch back is warped. If so it'll drag a bit. However some other things to consider, these boxes to have a free to spin output shaft. If this is a sail boat maybe the current is working the propeller. If it's a narrow boat maybe the clutch is just dragging due to the oil viscosity. Does the shaft turn powerfully or is this just a slight spin?
@thewigmaker
@thewigmaker 2 года назад
@@dhcrouchmarineltd3049 Hi, thanks for your reply. Its a narrowboat, it hasn't done it before, just started. It's only slightly spinning, I can stop it with my foot. I did just take it out and maybe more serious, when I gave it a fair bit of revs in forward, it suddenly lost power. The gearbox was pretty hot, although I believe it's cooler is working fine..... I did just run it again, and it didn't lose power..... bit bizarre

@@thewigmaker it shouldn't get past the engines temperature as it should be part of the same circuit. Change the oil, check the content for any metallic particles and be aware of the color. I've had tiny particles stopping the oil control rings from directing oil to the clutch packs in bigger variants of these. Maybe a small particle is causing an issue.
