Having the Silent Hill level start off with Caleb staring at a mirror in a public bathroom and then seeing the ghost of his dead girlfriend was a really nice touch.

Fun fact, you can hit the giant ghost in Armada with a cannon, you're treated to explosions and Tchernobog calling you an asshole.

Seeing a level called The Room had me like "There's no way they redid Henry Townsend's apartment in the Build Engine, that would be- OH MY GOD"

Caleb's genuine love for Ophelia while being an otherwise remorseless monster was always the most interesting thing about him, so it's rad seeing this mod take that and run with it.

I recently just finished Death Wish and realize how little Civvie actually showed. I appreciate that.

After finally playing blood, I have to appreciate the fine balance of Caleb's demented mischief and dad joke humor.

You know, in all the Blood games, the cultists screaming to death is some of the best, most realistic enemy screaming I've heard in a game. There's a sense of satisfaction hearing these scumbags scream.

I get the feeling the creator just REALLY likes that one train level in Blood.

What always struck me about Blood was Caleb's relationship with Ophelia and how that made him a lot more vulnerable than other FPS protagonists of the time. Hearing him wail at the sight of her sacrificed body really endeared me to him because it grafted real human emotions onto an archetype that was otherwise nothing but bloodlust and badassery. So to see that this mod took that element of Caleb's character and magnified it into an entire fucking *level*, said level being a technically impressive masterpiece in it's own right (and a parody of one of my favorite game franchises) is just... man. You ever play, watch or see some piece of art where you just know the art maker is on the same wavelength as you? That's what Death Wish is for me.

"Groovy" That could be a reference to several things, but since the episode had the whole book thing... I'm calling it the next episode is Evil Dead related.

The room reference where Tommy pets the hell hound with his red glowing eyes won me over

I love how the map Whisper Peak dips its toes into the psychological horror pool, implying Ophelia's death is actually haunting Caleb. Its stuff like that why Caleb is miles above Duke and Lo Wang. Blood has dark humor and Caleb likes to wisecrack but Blood at it's best never treats him like a joke. Caleb is never portrayed as a goofy clown caricature like Duke and Wang can be. Blood is horror comedy in the best way, where the comedy and the horror never overwhelm the other.

All these episodes in and I still can't get over how one can kick an enemies severed heads around like a soccer ball in an engine that usually only let the player leave bloody footprints after stepping on a dead guy's corpse

7:48 it looks like they made the stairs and seats slope down here so that the player wouldn't immediately get gunned down by all the cultists in the theater. That's some class level design right there.

19:30 been probably said several times already, but the first 2 maps here are direct homages to the original Silent Hill games. You start in a rest room and walk a lengthy forest path to the town like in SH2, explore a spooky school that gets even more crazy like in SH1, and obviously The Room's a nonstop SH4 reference.

Huh. Civvie's into German Expressionism. You know, that checks out.

One of the main things is how interactive yet non scripted the levels feel. There's always something triggered to spook you like a haunted house but it's not so much a pre scripted situation as it feels more like placing out in game objects and simply activating them. The main thing is how silent and passive it all is. It doesn't ever stop the flow of the action and say Hey look over here let me show you something awesome. No all pre stuff all flows along with your journey and it never feels like a slog. Only setting the atmosphere cause if you wanna speedrun, you can. It doesn't hold you back ever as if everything's simply happening around you and you don't actually matter and that's what I miss in games. One of my most memorable ones is in The Room when you walk under the rail and you see the lights flicker as a train drive by and stops. Something so simple but the lighting effect and sound is so powerful it sticks with me. That and I had to redo that damn part over and over and over cause I didn't have enough ammo for something i've forgot.

Honestly its kinda wild how much the pacing of Death wish matches up with the pace of Dusk

I just love the way Caleb just slaps the Shells in. I just love it.

My dad never got me doom when I was a kid. It sucked because all the other kids got Doom and I didnt and I wanted to play it. Well he didnt give a fuck about doom. Instead my dad got me Blood. This game scared the shit out of me when I was a kid and took a lot of nerve for me to play it and I never beat it without cheating and I never appreciated it. Later and by later I mean like 5 years ago now that I'm an adult I finally played it legit. I was blown away at what I missed out on and what I really did experience as far and beyond one of the best intense FPS games of the 90's. Last year I finally playd Death Wish and it is so fucking good that you can literally sit back and play it and you'll completely forget its a mod. Thats how unbelievably well made it is. Its mind blowing that I beat it last year because I went through all the "top mods" for Blood and as I was watching your review I was like "Holy shit yes I remember all these levels." That's how good it is. The mod feels more authentic, more realized and more of EVERYTHING from the original episodes. Hell I remember the platforming, the puzzles, the well thought out pacing and ramp up. I even remember how some of the levels just start you out in this immediately great wonderful scenario of atmosphere then you get shot immediately because you didnt move. Why? Because its blood. The only and I mean ONLY thing that could be done for this is if they added new weapons.

The spiky things on the beach are traps made for tanks, though they were repurposed on D-day to pierce the hulls of landing craft and make it harder to make an amphibious landing and assault. They're called the czech hedgehog, and though they're static and easy to spot, they still make it harder for heavy vehicles to pass through certain areas, since you have to either find a way around, or get out and move the things.

Wow. Looking at Episodes two and three, one has to admit DUSK guys took some heavy inspiration for their final chapter from here.

Hey Civvie. Cerberus is a Greek word, so the proper plural would be "Cerberuses", just as the plural for octopus is octopuses. Words with Latin roots have "i's" at the end. Also, "Cerberus" has a root meaning "spotted", so Hades basically named the three-headed, snake-tailed guard dog of the underworld "Spot".

This mod right here is why Blood is my favorite game of all time. I get a really nice feeling of comfort when playing it and Speedy's music mod only adds to that comfort.

Holy cow, Civvie missed the second secret level after the Jigsaw level where you have to escape a giant prison, and by extension the return secret area as well (something Civvie mentioned but is so much cooler than I realized) I had to come back and check the video after I found it when I started playing, because it didn't look familiar. Also, having finally started playing Death Wish myself, wow is it amazing and impressive.

I still can't get over E3M1. It's just this perfectly anachronistic masterpiece. It feels exactly like a blood level should, yet it couldn't possibly have existed in 1998 for obvious reasons. I'm not spoiling what E3M1 is for those reading the comments, it's a doozie.
