He's got an amazing thought process! and one that should be more widespread. Like, the "If everything is dialed up to a 10, nothing will feel like a 10" is what I find the most interesting cause it's not only something for YT but for everyday life as well
THANK YOU for putting it into words. I feel like so many people who copy the mrbeast style of videos can often end up with these same sorts of issues, where I'm not actually emotionally invested in any of it and it all just turns into white noise. Fast cuts =/= more interesting. They ALL need to watch this video.
i love how at 12:44 hayden literally dials the intensity of the video down to a 2 and let’s Beem really work through the concept, thus demonstrating the exact point he’s been making about contrast editing. brilliant stuff.
The fact you can make an editing breakdown actually entertaining just shows how much of a pro he is at this. Cause informative editing videos are usually just so boring
The effort you commit into ACTUALLY creating the examples of better editing have always been a real treat. They shine once again in this video. Great work, very informative, I loved it all!
This is SO amazing because comprehension really is in the troubleshooting. You can watch a million editing videos but seeing ACTUAL EXAMPLES OF WHY things work (or not) is awesome! Shout out to Beem for being gracious enough to allow us to learn through him & Hillier for sharing his amazing talent with us again. THANK YOU! Super helpful and genuinely interesting.
Its not just an art form to be able to breakdown and critique someone elses video but make the video of the breakdown itself even more entertaining and keeping me emotionally invested. GD Hayden you're a legend. Can't wait for your course.
Oh my goodness, I completely resonated with what Matthew said about not trusting people’s attention span. Seeing how everyone is so focused on short form content and how quick cuts and edits keep retention, it’s become harder for me to feel comfortable with making a video that doesn’t have a ton of things happening all the time. But what Matthew said after is also true, if someone clicked seeing it was X quantity of time long then they’re surely interested enough that if you hook them and keep your video promise that they’ll watch the video through to the end. Great video 💯
Hiller doing an elegant mic drop here and telling an ENTIRE generation of RU-vidrs to STOP doing what they are doing, STOP trying to please the algorithm and STOP doing these unwatchable videos and instead just start telling a freaking good story that makes us CARE. Respect.
The value of permission to enhance the storytelling than just solely on optimization is gold. Loved how you compared it to movies. Just like in CreatorNow, your insights give me lightbulb moments. Sportmode Carl
So great seeing this side of Matthew! I hope we can see more of it and I’m stoked to watch him grow! Hayden, love the edit on this one! The LICKD segue was world class 🤌
*So much to absorb.* You have made me a better RU-vidr, but I still have so much more to learn and incorporate. Love how you educate in such a relatable way.
man took the critique very well. I had to learn that as well as a film student sometimes it's hard to accept that you made some mistakes because you put so much effort into it. Respect to him.
I subscribed after watching this vid! Actually, I think I am already subscribed to your other channel which is the editing podcast. I really like educational videos with actual samples, thanks for this! learned a lot more about how to tell a more appealing story through editing :)
THANK YOU! Media with all these fast cuts and attempts at retention is further fueling an ADHD standard of story telling. We have gotten so used to swiping what's next in an attempt to get hit of dopamine that all context of story is lost. Story is what keeps you coming back for more. I look to RU-vidrs like the Neistat brothers for this sort of thing.
The fast cutting to improve retention is something I do now, I am going to need to re-think my approach because often now my main goal is "how can I get information across as quick as possible" instead of considering anything else.
I’m really enjoying these breakdowns and loving the technical definitions to some of the edit styles. I don’t make hyper energetic videos, so you’d think this isn’t very informative to me, yet the way you show how you can increase excitement whilst removing the need to always shout, is exactly what I’m trying (and often struggling) to achieve with my own channel, as someone who is definitely not shouty - thanks!
I wanna see Hillier's take on short form content. I find myself cutting my video every single second with no reason just to keep that retention going. This video basically showed not to edit longform content as shortform, but could we edit shortform more like longform?
Keep these coming please. ❤️ Also, it would be highly entertaining to see you do this same series, but also with super small timer RU-vidrs that have potential.
Tbh I don’t like how staged the entire video is. Feels like a bunch of bad actors creating a yt video with a script. He is so much nicer here, than he seemed in this videos.
Your perspective with these break downs is invaluable. I don’t think there’s a better source that can break down the psychology of editing/storytelling and I really appreciate what you do. Thanks Hayden
Beem’s obviously pretty smart to have achieved the level of success he has so far, and I bet with Hayden’s storytelling tips and slowing down his releases he can break through to > 10m average views.
dude, you know your stuff!!! really loved the video. tons of value in here and also so many things I'm doing wrong as well.... A huge inspiration to get to your editing and storytelling level one day
you are a gold mine Hillier! i look forward to using this wealth of knowledge that you so graciously provide to us! Top tier, 5 star content,as always!
Always love learning from you! You have such a wide aspect of how you think and it just simply makes everything about editing and content creation 100% better!!! I can't wait to start content back up and start implementing the key points you talk about. Thank you, Hillier!
It's taken me a bit before commenting on this video but I must thank you for making this clear because for a while I was optimizing retention by just shortening the videos with J-cuts and Rapid cuts and my audience didn't like that. I just wasn't trusting peoples attention spans like Beem said and this has motivated me to actually optimize my content with storytelling (and storyshowing). This really helped since I took a long break from making content but now I'm back and in progress of making the best content I can in my niche.
The way you break down videos and editing in general is wild. Im still learning and your channel is so valuable. You dont think about how these scenes are set up ,like in Jaws, until you break it down and then it makes sense.
At this point... Beem is still enjoying the video. 1:42 These story breakdown videos by Hayden are about my favorite thing on RU-vid! Such amazing teaching, oh to evoke emotion like Mr. Hillier-Smith.
