@SGobuck I didn't say that...all I'm saying is that Don Coryell is now in the pro football hall of fame make no doubts about it with Chargers he did do what he wanted to make them a really good team Dan Fouts was marvelous Kellen Winslow was a real true X-Factor of the tight end position not to mention Jefferson and Joiner were amazing receivers better known as Air Coryell back in the days
Lifelong Steeler fan. Hated Coryell, hated "Air Coryell", hated Dan "F." Fouts, too!! Oh, and I hated the Chargers. That's how damn good Don Coryell was as a coach, an innovator and as a leader. God Bless you, Coach Coryell.
Well you guys had it all. I was in SD for that 79 game vs Pitt right hostages were taken . 35-7 SD won that day. Should have been 42-7. There 7 turnovers in the 1st quarter 4 for Pitt 3 for us. The colors that day were amazing. Glen Edwards was a beast for SD. What a day and what great players we had. Sadly it’s over. At least you got rings!
I was a Cowboys fan but I loved some Air Coryelle. I always penciled you in on my non-counting HOF ballot. If only you had better defense to go with it. The 1982 playoff game against the Dolphins was awesome.
Seriously wtf. i wasn't even alive back then but even i know who Don Coryell is because of how dramatically he impacted football offense i'm glad he's finally in but the fact that he wasn't alive to see it...that sucks
The high powered offenses that we’ve seen in the NFL over the past three decades can all be traced back to what Don Coryell was doing in the 1970s and 80s. The concepts of widening the field, sending multiple players in motion, tailoring his offense to best suit the skills of the personnel he had available, he was a genius. Washington, Dallas, and St. Louis won a combined seven Super Bowls with each team using variations of Coryell’s offensive scheme. It’s a damn shame he wasn’t able to get his well deserved HOF induction while he was still alive.
Don Air Coryell has now landed in Canton Ohio to the pro football hall of fame congratulations somewhere someplace in football heaven right now he's smiling with joy and excitement God Rest His Soul Mr.Coryell 🙏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽👏🏽
I can't think of a coach who gave more to the sport than coach Coryell. I also don't believe anyone, player or coach, would have cherished this honor more than him. This induction is far too long overdue. Congratulations coach!
Turning St. Louis into a winner should be enough to get him in the HOF. St. Louis did nothing before Coryell arrived except lose. They did nothing but lose after he left until the Rams and Vermeil who hired Mike Martz who ran Coryell's offense. The Rams (greatest show on turf 1999-2001) coaching staff was loaded with ex Coryell assistants.
When Air Coryell was on, you never knew how high the score was gonna get. 24 points after 1 qtr? 55 for the game, anytime. It was so fun to watch. I'm glad I became a SAN DIEGO Charger fan from then on.
Don Coryell took the Sid Gillman and Al Davis concepts of stretching the field and expanded it, and made it even more effective. He completely changed how teams had to play defense. The fact that his induction took so long is ridiculous and insulting
A football genius. The League was way too slow to give this guy what he deserved, due to the Charger interference in the Los Angeles lawsuit between the then LA Raiders and the soon to depart LA Rams. So cool to see Dan Fouts make the announcement.
January 1982 miami epic overtime victory beat Miami Dolphins at Orange Bowl 41-38 Dan Fouts playoff record 434 yards passing 3 td passes along with Kellen Winslow blocked field goal caught 13 passes 166 yes and scored td pass.
The Air Coryell era was some of the best years for Chargers fans like me (I've been a Chargers fan since 1969)! Every game began with hope of a win. Coryell adapted his offense to the skills of the players he had, which is a rare but excellent quality in head coaches.
I wish Don had Joe Washington for a player instead Lydell Mitchell-who was a good player but Joe was younger and just dynamic. Don would have had a blast.
@yurolson I agree. I remember a sports commentator at the time noting the same thing. Washington would have thrived in an Air Coryell offensive system.
Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh once said that had Coryell & the Chargers beat the Bengals in the AFC Championship in the 1981 season, they would've crushed his 49ers team in Super Bowl XVI. Many congrats to the late Coryell on a long-overdue achievement.
Damn century low weather in cinci. Todays nfl would have none of it. Wished we would played the 9’ers too. Cinci played SD 5 times from 79 to 82. Alas only 2 losses were in 81!
My ‘Boys want a do over against the Niners. We “…let them of the hook.” I wanted to play those Coryell Chargers. I Still want the great Raiders franchise and my hometown Jets in a Super Bowl one Day.
Chargers had just finished a double overtime game the week before and went into Cincinnati and atrocious winds. The Bengals deserved it, but it was home field advantage and pure exhaustion that one that game for them
"I'm so happy Air Coryell's offense is finally in The Hall of Fame. As a child I was captivated by that offense & as a Coach of youth sports nothing is better then kids executing the passing game at a high level & it was Air Coryell's offense that planted that 1st seed (Bill Walsh 2nd). I love those Chargers Teams"
Air Coryell was the run and shoot offense which Warren Moon perfected it with Houston Oilers using a tight end as a receiver in Kellen Winslow along with scoring fest over 500 points throwing the ball alot and rushing but defense would give up as many points as scored a problem that kept them out of super bowl with turn over committed on offense too from 1979-1982 playoff years.
The game as we know today wouldn't be possible if it weren't for Don Coryell innovative offensive schemes and passing attack. He's regarded as the father of the modern offensive.
Sid Gilman was the true Passing Offense innovator as Don Coryell is under Sid Gilman coaching tree with all do respect both great head coaches. Let’s Go Los Angeles battle Chargers! Da Da Dah Dah Da Charge!!!!! ⚡️🐴🏈
