Just wanted to say thank you. I upgraded the sub platter, the acrylic, added some (cheap) tpe pucks, and upgraded from the ranier to the moonstone, and my living room has never sounded more alive. I sincerely appreciate your content, and have now found direct benefit from it. Kudos and thanks!

Excellent review. Really appreciated the detail and assessment of each upgrade. The various tweaks that vinyl makes possible is a big part of why I love it; and why some I know hate it. 🙂

I bought this model of turntable last year and now I am thinking about an upgrade. So far I have only bought a Cork it but after your advice I decided on an bigger upgrade....acryil it and alu sub plate.. You made a very good video and it helped me a lot ... you are one of those they know what they are talking about.Thanks. Good luck.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this! I'm sure you enjoyed it a bit too! Lol. I just got the aluminum sub platter for mine and literally said the same descriptor that it sounded more "balanced"! Thank you again, your accuracy on this is very much appreciated! I wish you the best and success with your channel too!

Thank you for a great video and covering so many options. A friend gave me the Acrylic platter and it was such a huge change I have been wondering about other things especially the sub platter. I did upgrade the stylus and got a Ground-it E. So nice to get things that you can actually hear a difference.

Thanks for this and the many other videos you produce. I’ve collected records and have been interested in Hi-Fi since inheriting my older sisters Fidelity record player and a copy of Hits of ‘82! I’m only now in a position to buy myself a decent set of components and it’s been a pleasure listening to your insights…not to mention eagerly awaiting each video to see which albums you have on your shelves! Much gratitude.

I watched this video after i did my first upgrade run for my Evo Carbon Debut. And i fully agree. I went with the bronze stylus, alu sub platter, acryl platter. And it is like a whole new table. Pulling out details that i have not noticed before. The next round i'll get the base and high power supply. Thanks for the great video!

Would love to see you do a video about upgrading the tone arm on your Evo2. I am pretty new to all this. I got my Evo about 1.5 years ago and have done all the upgrades you talked about and liked over time. It’s my first foray into a more upscale deck, but I am so pleased with what a difference the upgrades made especially in the two platter upgrades. Would really be interested on your thoughts about tone arms and what to look for, differences it can make, etc. Thanks for a great channel.

I have the older debut carbon and taking your advice I have started with upgrading. I was a bit skeptical but I started with the power supply and I was surprised at the difference. Actually I was amazed. Next was a Michell record clamp and that was another improvement. I will go for a cork mat next. Dont know yet about the platter and sub platter but I will keep an open mind. Thanks for the advice. Love the Channel.

Really enjoyable video. I have followed a similar route you describe (with the addition of an arm rewire) with a 1986 Planar 3 I bought from new. I think your comments at the end are spot on. Laying out serious money every few years is a hard sell to the domestic controller. You are right to praise Pro-Ject for embracing the modular approach to upgrading.

Finally bit the bullet and got the Ortofon 2M Blue (hopefully it won't get noticed by the management). The difference to my humble system is simply astonishing. (Carbon Evo + 30yr old Sony amp + QAcoustic 3030i). So much extra detail, clarity and liveliness! Best £130 I've spent in a long while. The problem I have now is finding the time to listen to my favourite albums all over again. Subplatter next, I think. Thanks Paul.

Super helpful video! In the market for a turntable replacement and had my heart set on a Rega but now it is not sourced by the vendor that built my theatre system that includes KEF reference speakers and surround. They recommended the Debut Carbon EVO as an option and I've been on the fence. Even was/am considering the Rega 3 special edition that is more than double the price in USD (but LOTS of extras in 2023) and just getting it from another supplier though this eliminates the great support I get from current vendor. Where I am now (and your video reinforces my direction) is I've ordered the EVO in white gloss, am adding an acrylic platter, and changing out the cartridge for a Sumiko Moonstone cartridge. I was looking at the the 2M Blue or 2M bronze but Sumiko is the brand coming with the TT so I decided to keep the cartridge in the same family. What I hadn't added and will given your recommendation is the power source and the aluminum sub platter. With all this the total still comes out about $500 USD less than the Rega 3. I'm hopeful all this is a good decision. Thanks!

Thanks for this video, Paul. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on these upgrades. I currently have the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon (about 5 years now) and have replaced the platter with the Acryl-it, replaced the 2M Red with the 2M Blue and purchased a Michell Engineering Clamp (all worthwhile upgrades for me). My next upgrade would involve better isolation (like a Ground-it or perhaps a think butcher block as many have suggested). I'm also thinking of purchasing a Tube Box S2 phono preamp (my Sansui B-2101/C-2101 amp and preamp and ADS L1290 speakers produce a very sweet sound so am curious how the Tube Box S2 would affect the sound). The one thing you mentioned that had me thinking how it would affect the sound is the high power-it. I can see it affecting the speed stability which would impact wow and flutter, but that's it. It does not touch the electric signal path from the cartridge to the preamp so am not sure how it would impact the sound quality. Can you elaborate further?
@TheAudiophileMan
@TheAudiophileMan 2 года назад
Hi Craig - I find that bigger, more powerful, better *quality* power supplies produce a more confidant sound. Weak supplies give a sense of stress and strain. As if the music is running out of puff. So bass has weight and mass instead of sounding like it needs a good dinner down it. A quality supply will also reject mains noise (a massive problem that too many people either ignore, denigrate or are unaware of). Get rid or reduce that and the general noise floor lowers allowing fine and subtle detail to get though.

Just bought this tt after watching your videos on it. Thanks for taking the time to post such a worth while video. The modding will start soon. I put the power it on straight away and noticed a difference. I will do the platters and cartridge throughout the year. I do have one question though and it’s about cartridges. The blue is the obvious plug and play choice but what about the at cartridges such as 95ml and 540ml. Would they offer better performance than the blue. Thanks again for posting this. As an American “modder” I went acrylic mat, aluminum sub platter and Sumiko Moonstone cartridge: It’s like a whole new listening experience and was fun to tinker on along the way. I bought the clamp-it and really only use it on a really thin, older vinyl.

Superb. agree with one of your final points about the arm. The back of the arm is not carbon ( where the counter weight attaches) and is prone to breakage. They need to sort that before anyone had the confidence to outlay another £400. + pounds on the upgrades .

Great video. I love modding myself. I enjoy the little steps up in sound quality that you can treat yourself to every now and again. Plus the second hand market is usually pretty good for these things, so once you've fully modded something and are ready to move to the next turntable, you can get most of your money back selling them all on. In fact if you buy second hand and buy well, you usually break even or even make a little.

I had a Ortofon 2m Blue on my old table (a 1974 Philips GA 212) as well as the cork mat, I just moved them over. The sub platter is probably the first part to be switched out followed by the power supply. I am a little on the fence on the acrylic platter. I do plan on restoring the Philips and doing some upgrading by switching from RCA cables to RCA jacks.y

Thank you very much for the detailed overview of all the upgrades and how they perform. I am currently considering this as my first & probably last turntable. With that said, if I was to spend an extra $200 - $250 which upgrade(s) would yield the best initial results? Maybe the sub platter and cork-it together, the platter by itself, or the stylus and cork-it combo? For a bit of background this will played in a recording studio with a fully treated room through studio monitors. I haven't decided on a preamp yet... Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers, Greg

Hi, great video, really informative - thanks. I have a Pro-Ject Evo with Sony STR-DH190 & Q3010i speakers (currently using the in built pre amp/Phono input on the Sony) My question is, would I be better upgrading the turntable (thinking particularly of the aluminium sub platter, power & stylus) - or - putting that money to a different use by either purchasing a separate phono amp and/or upgrade to my amplifier first? I think my amp was around £200 so would look to sell it on & spend maybe around £400-500 mark. Any recommendations welcome, be it for phono amp / main amp or upgrades mentioned. Cheers!

Great video! Thanks for the detailed exposition. It’s a shame that YT’s algorithm didn’t show it to me earlier. I have one question though, I’ve heard that adding the acrylic subplatter will mess up the vertical tracking angle, did you have to tinker with the VTA after upgrading?
@TheAudiophileMan
@TheAudiophileMan 2 года назад
Generally speaking, there's no difference. In terms of fractions, there is :) The sub platter is exactly the same in terms of thickness so doesn't change the VTA. As for the main platter though? My default, basic, 'as is' EVO is ever so slightly out of alignment but not enough to cause sonic issues. Yours might be different, though. Mine has been around the houses a bit and thrown around by many couriers so it might be that. Hence, mine is slightly and I mean slightly high at the rear. Replacing the default platter and then removing the felt mat actually improves the levelling a tad. I emphasise, I'm talking fractions here. So yea. Basically, don't worry about it. If anything though, the acrylic platter right actually help. I know the sub platter was the main subject here but I thought I'd add more thoughts on the main platter, in case the acrylic upgrade was also on your list.

Michell makes a record clamp specifically for Rega tables. Why not give it a try? Most record clamps don’t work well on Rega tables because of the very short spindle height.

The psu upgrade is essential. The original psu is worthless and should be binned right away. From the box the Evo is not really impressive, but it’s a good platform for upgrades. With rubber feet, a Soundeck platter mat and an Audio Technica record stabilizer it really starts to sing. I guess a 2M Blue stylus would be the cherry on the cake.

First, great list of upgrades. I will definitely be upgrading to the aluminum sub-platter and the acrylic platter. Question about the 2M Blue cartridge. I have read other reviews that say it can be a little to bright on some systems (mine already suffers from that). What are your thoughts on this?
@TheAudiophileMan

There may be other variables involved which might be causing that brightness issue - I certainly didn't experience it when installing it on a neutral/balanced hifi chain. I would look elsewhere for the problem.

Hello. I really enjoy your videos, especially the ones about turntables. i notice many of the tables you review don't have tonearm height adjustments. Is this really an important feature? It seems to me that if it were you would see them on U turn and Project turntables. You also don't see them on Fluance tables but many Audio Teknicas do have them. What say you? Thanks.
@TheAudiophileMan
@TheAudiophileMan 2 года назад
Hi Troy - many of the cheaper turntables out there do not allow for VTA adjustments because the feature - in and of itself - would add too much to the build budget. The EVO here, for example, can be adjusted but you need to add 'shims' to raise the arm. You can buy these from Pro-Ject. Rega offers the same service. If a turntable does not offer VTA adjustments, I advise being prepared by measuring any new cartridge and, if possible, undergoing a dealer or home-based demo to make sure the tonearm is level before you buy. This, of course, is also why packages are popular and useful because the bundles cartridge should be an ideal fit for the arm.

Static is a separate thing, in my experience at any rate and can be tackled using an anti-static gun such as a ZeroStat or, if you have the cash, the more efficient DeStat from Furutech. Careful vinyl storage is a help too.

Hi Paul, I decided on getting the project debut carbon after watching your review. I also am following your record cleaning process with the disco antistat device. So thanks for helping me out with your videos. I have a really newbie question for you if you don't mind? The debut came with RCA cables with an earth wire in between the two leads. But I bought some other RCA's but they don't have an earth. Do I need to earth, and if so what actually needs to be earthed, and to where? So far all I've got is the turntable, a phono amp, and a Tascam SD-20M for recording my music onto an sd card. Appreciate any help. Thanks.
@TheAudiophileMan

Some leads include the earth wire in the cable itself (the red one, I think) so you should be covered. If a separate earth cable is suppled, then attach that to the Earth screw you'll find on the rear of the phono amplifier.

Thanks for the reply, and good to know. But, no they didn't come with a ground wire, the original cable did, that's why I was concerned. I'm going to get the upgrades you mentioned also. I appreciate your reviews, and glad I found your channel. Not sure the missus feels the same way though. 🤑😆

@TheAudiophileMan

I wouldn't compare them at all because that wouldn't be the point of upgrading the EVO in the first place. You upgrade the EVO because you have very little cash and certainly not enough to buy a new, more expensive turntable...like the 1500. If you're considering buying a 1500 then you have that money. So the EVO is not the mode to be comparing the 1500 to - it's a whole different level of turntable.

P. S. puntina solo e sempre Grado.

@djsoulfilter
@djsoulfilter Год назад
@@jddewitt1981 I love the minimal and sleek look of my NAD turntable. It also sounds/performs wonderfully! an acrylic platter adds more mass/weigh. Due to the density and greater mass of the platter, the increased inertia allows the platter to spin at a more consistent speed. This results in a better wow and flutter measurement. The high-density material also aids in damping unwanted microvibrations, moreso than traditional platter materials. The acrylic material is able to trap and dissipate the energy that is transferred to the platter. Because acrylic has an analogous resonant frequency to the PVC material in vinyl records, it aids in the cancellation of reverberations resulting in a more 3-dimensional soundstage with improved bass definition, a richer mid range and greater overall signal clarity.
