Pro-Ject have released a new model of their popular VC-E compact record cleaning machine. The new VC-E2 features several upgrades, including one major change that addresses the criticism from some about the top-loaded vent position.
As the owner of an original VC-E, I was keen to investigate the new design to see how this new vacuum record cleaning machine performs compared to the original.

I have just received one of these as my very first record washing machine. I have mostly old LPs from my younger days (records are approx 40 years old), with a few newer ones. They pop and click like mad even when I try to hand clean them. I also found that even after hand wet cleaning them, the stylus would still end up with gunk on it at the end of the side, so I'm hoping this machine will make a difference! - update after using the machine. Wow- what a difference! Less pops and surface noise and the stylus is totally clean after playing the record.

Great! Yea, that’s definitely the advantage of vacuuming out the record cleaning fluid. Less likely to leave stuff behind or simple move it around. Glad to hear it worked so well for you 🎶🎧

I have a Moth RCM1 machine which I have had for 30 years now. The design is very similar to the Pro ject. What I do like about my machine is that the vacuum tube is level with the turntable, so you apply the cleaning solution to the first side, then flip it over to dry it. I find that this way the groves are really deep cleaned, as any debris is sucked away from the base of the groves. I have used many different cleaning solutions and find that PERMOCLEAN is the best I have used, followed by the Pro ject cleaning solution. I have been a record collector and DJ for 43 years.

Outstanding review... I've been waiting for this upgraded edition as there were just too many issues with it's predecessor. For me the most important change is the fact that you can position the unit closer to the wall (thanks for the full review on your website). That's a game changer and means I can make more space for other things (records) and it will be less dominant in the living space.

Thanks for your reviews. I started looking into the Pro-Ject cleaners because a friend has the VC-E. He cleaned a few albums for me, and I was really impressed. I am torn between the VC-S2 and the VC-E2. I like the E2 but I can get the S2 for $50 less. If anybody would like to weigh in on this, I would appreciate it. Space is not an issue, and I will not be doing many albums at a time. Thanks again, JT

@soundmatters Yours are the best vids on YT about cleaning records. Please keep it up. Question about your VC-E: Do you ever even need to empty the tank if you just clean a few records now and then, or does the liquid just evaporate out? And do you need to clean the inside of the tank somehow after awhile?
@soundmatters
@soundmatters 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for your kind words. Yes! That's correct. No need to empty the tank unless you're cleaning a lot of records and manage to max out the tank. To be honest, I've never cleaned the tank, though if this concerns you, it's probably best not to take the machine apart to do it. I'll ask project if they have a recommended cleaning procedure for it, but so far I've not felt the need to do so.
@mitchsegall
@mitchsegall 11 месяцев назад
@@soundmatters Thanks much for the reply! That all makes perfect sense. The only reason I've thought about cleaning the tank is that in a small apartment, the residual cleaning fluid inside can still put off some chemical-ey smells for awhile. (For me, surprisingly, it's the GSR rinse whose smell sorta sneaks up you after a bit!)

I bought the older model that didn’t have a vent cover but it was the wrong voltage so I had to send it back. They sent me the right one with a thin plastic guard that went under the record which worked OK but let fluid creep onto the edge of the already-cleaned record, plus I ended up cracking it by dropping it so it was useless. After trying taping a flat filter over the vent hole I put an old 7 inch record on under the album to be cleaned and that seems to work well.

@soundmatters
@soundmatters Год назад
It's fairly noisy unfortunately. Most vacuum record cleaners are. Another option is to go Ultrasonic. The Humminguru is a good affordable option. Not quite as good as the Degritter (but then the Degritter is about $2500 more expensive! With a pre-clean by head followed by a cycle or two in the Humminguru, you'll get good results with less noise if the noise really is a deal breaker for you. I have a Humminguru review on this channel also. Hope this helps!

I agree with you, the clear disc is a work around and it does keep exhaust off of the record. I'm not a fan of it either but it does the job except for occasional slippage requiring to screw the clamp tighter. But a vent cover and magnetic clamp is not worth buying the upgraded model. The VC-E does a very good job of cleaning records. If I got adventurous I too could find a similar cover and attach it to the unit but even that is not worth the trouble to me because of the clear disc. Overall I really like the machine and I have cleaned quite a few records. In fact I have cleaned over 20 records at a time with the clear disc on the unit and I have never really noticed any spray residue on the clear disc but that being said, psychologically I use the disc because it makes me feel better. I think the new end caps are mostly cosmetic. So I will keep my VC-E. If I had it to do over I would have bought the larger model because of the placement of the vent plus you could buy a dedicated dust cover made to fit the unit. I had a custom quilted cloth cover made for the VC-E. Not as sophisticated looking as the plastic cover but again it gets the job done.

I find the power of the vaccuum is quite strong, to the point where the record will stop spinning (not always). My first record cleaning machine which I'm using in conjunction with the Groovewasher Mondo. Nice results thus far but you're work flow is a lot shorter than mine, which I do like and will try. Thanks for the review.

Hey, thanks for watching. Never seemed to have that problem with the suction strength of mine. With regard to workflow, in reality, it very much depends on the record condition. I like G3 on very dirty records, but that adds a second rinse step. Ultrasonic has different benefits too.

Have mine a few weeks now and seems to be doing a good job. Have the same problem with the record stopping during the vacuuming on occasion, a little bit annoying so not sure if this affects all models, would be nice to have a solution. All in all I'm very happy with it and have noticed a big difference on some of my older vinyl.
@thepanamahat

@johndesay I wondered if the vacuum arm was too close to the vinyl. I was supplied with two plastic washers which raised the vinyl sightly. Not sure why project didn't manufacture the spindle with the correct height. Instructions aren't of great detail
@pkats9093
@pkats9093 Год назад
The improved version certainly addresses my three main problems with this machine. The location of the plug, the vent, and the cheap screw on record clamp. Be sure not to drop the cheap plastic record clamp because it will crack, just as mine did. It still works but not great. I put a piece of clear tape over the vent on mine with an opening towards the back, works fine. The plug being on the same side as the vent is a no-brainer. Wish they would have thought about all this stuff before I purchased mine!

Strangely I bought a VC-E a few days ago - this came fitted with the new style self adhesive cleaning arm strips so possibly later models of the VC-E were being shipped with those prior to the VC-E2. The machine is brill though. I'm not overly concerned about the vent as it is extremely unlikely that I will be doing loads of records in one go, but it would have been nice for the company to offer some kind of retro fit add-on to the vent.

I own the original VC-E. The new vent cover is a nice addition but mine came with a clear record size disc shield that goes on before the record that should accomplish the same thing. I do however like the new magnetic clamp. Also when I got my VC-E machine the vacuum arm came with a thinner felt pad on the vacuum arm. When I ordered replacements I received thicker white pads that installed one on each side. The original was a continuous thin black circular pad. I also would prefer the pre mixed solution. There is only one issue I have experienced with the clear plastic shield and that is that the record sometimes slips on the shield if it is not clamped down very firmly.

Thanks for sharing. I too got the clear disc: wasn’t a fan, but it was better than nothing. I’ve seen some people mod their own vent covers to the VC-E. How about the felt from the vacuum arm, some people had the arm scratch records because that felt is quite rubbish and falls apart just after a few records, usually where it curves. I still think the original design of 2 strips of felt in just each side its the best.

Hello there, so I'm gonna get myself a vaccuum based vinyl cleaner very soon, most likely a vinyl vac 33 because I don't really have the budget for the Pro-ject vc-e2 unfortunately. So I have like 40 recorde that were already cleaned before, some with a spin clean and some with groovewasher g2, and so I wanna re-clean them with g3 and gsr and I already have a black magic pad, but I have just 1 black magic pad and if I'm gonna clean all my vinyl records again that's going to be like 80 sides to clean, so is it a good idea to use 1 black magic pad for cleaning 40 records per side? Or should I get 1 or 2 extra black magic pads to clean 80 sides?
@soundmatters
@soundmatters Год назад
Hey! Sorry for the slow reply here. I would say having more pads will help you clean more records before you need to clean the pad or it becomes too saturated to be effective. That said, you’ll also need the regular microfibre pad or towel to properly dry the records and absorb the record cleaning fluid. 40 records would be a lot in one sitting. It would be better and more effective to clean a few at a time snd rinse the pads out with a little dish soap and distilled water every so often (letting them dry before using again, of course). This way you reduce the risk of just spread dirt/dust around. Hope this helps!
@romerolemstra8747
@romerolemstra8747 Год назад
@@soundmatters Thank you for the reply, and yes I'm cleaning my pad after I use it a few times, but I'll be using my black magic pad with a vaccuum (if I have one) so it won't make that big of a deal of spreading dirt around the records because I'll be sucking the liquid and dirt off the record with the vaccuum right? Btw what is your opinion about using paint pads/paint edgers to clean/spreading fluid on the record? I have never use a paint pad before but I've heard lot's of times that those brissles on paint pads also lock and get deep into the record grooves like the black magic pad.

Hi Mark, Thanks for your review of the VC-E2. A couple of weeks ago I got myself a Pro-Ject VC-E2 vacuum cleaning unit too. By now I cleaned around 25 records over 5 sessions. I first do a dry clean with a carbon brush, then apply the Pro-Ject Wash It 2 liquid that came with the machine and distribute it over the surface with a brush, vacuum, rinse with distilled water and another brush and vacuum again. Every single time after cleaning and vacuuming a record, when I lift the vacuum arm, the velvet strips leave a wet footprint on the surface of the record. I tried everything, adjusting the height, using less liquid, stop spinning the record while leaving the vacuum on, keep spinning after stopping the vacuuming (this smears the remaining liquid)... When I watch your video it looks like the velvet strips leave no footmark when you lift the arm. Is that so, and if it is, what is it that I'm doing wrong? Cheers

Hey! Thank for your comment. Hmmm, that's odd. How much of a footprint are we talking? I tend to find it comes off clean, but then I used GrooveWasher mostly rather than the stock Wash-It whenever I've used my machine. How many rotations do you complete?

@ivan_mervillie 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your reply Mark. The footprint I refer to is a thin but continuous line of liquid running across the surface of the record. When I don't rinse with distilled water the remaining Wash It 2 evaporates after a couple of minutes. But when I rinse with distilled water I have to dry the left over water with a microfiber cloth. I give the vacuuming 2 full rotations in both directions. @@soundmatters

There's no such thing as a silly question Mark, only silly answers 😉. Yes, I allow the vacuum to fully stop before lifting the arm. Two to three extra rotations in both directions don't make a difference. May I ask what's your sequence of actions? For starters do you lower the arm, start spinning and then engage the vacuum, and then do the opposite at the end of the cycle: stop the vacuum first and stop spinning the record after the vacuum has stopped? Or do you lower the arm, start the vacuum and then start the spinning, and end the cycle with first stopping the spinning and then stop the vacuum?@@soundmatters

The problem I have with the Pro-Ject VC record cleaners is the vacuum. I initially purchased the VC-S in 2020 and it worked great. After about two years, I noticed that the vacuum was starting to get louder. I finally reached out to the company and was told to contact the service facility. The service facility informed me that it was a a minimum $160 just to look at the machine. I reached back out to the company to express my displeasure. The company decided to send me a brand new VC-S2. All I had to do was mail back my VC-S. I received the new machine in December 2022. It has worked fine; however, today I noticed that the vacuum is already starting to get slightly louder. In checking out reviews, the biggest complaint has been the vacuum. The company is aware of the issue but hasn't done anything about it. At the least, they should make the part available to consumers so that they can replace themselves. I'm going to start looking at other cleaners now so that I'm not stuck once the vacuum starts sounding like a freight train.

I also own(ed) the original machine. After 18 months it developed a fault (extremely loud motor noise and burning smell). After 6 months of hassle and the threat of legal action I got a full refund. So now I looking for a replacement machine. It's a bit strange you don't comment on the motor noise, something which was a big problem for me on the original model (it was so load my neighbours complained!). Also, I notice that still, the suction does not reach fully in to the inner most part of the record leaving a wet ring around the inner grooves, annoying the new Velcro strip arrangement didn't solve that. Does the magnetic clamp work well on 180gram records? And am I correct in assuming it won't clean 7" records without additional equipment?

I have heard of a few people struggling with the motor due to corrosion, which is a shame. In general though, it is fairly load - best used in an environment that won't annoy neighbours for sure. The clamp works fine on all record weights I found, and you're correct about 7-inch records. You need the 7-inch adaptor kit.

I cleaned a few 7" records with the included vacuum arm and made a sleeve to cover the excess portion of the arm. Worked well and much cheaper than a 7" arm.

Have you tried the 7" kit yet? I recently bought one and expected it to be a magnetic clamp but it is not. In fact it isn't even a screw on clamp like its predecessor. I am left disappointed with it.

@soundmatters 5 месяцев назад
I haven't, but that sounds like you've been sent the old version to me. Either that, or they've designed it to be a one-size fits all for the VC-E and VC-E2, which is a bit of a shame not to have the magnetic element.
@mickystephenson1639

It is advertised as the 7" kit for the VC-E2 although it falls short of saying it has a magnetic clamp.@@soundmatters

Does anyone know if this product has an internal transformer so that it can be used in 220v and 110v regions? I'm curious as I plan on purchasing this in Europe but may also end up using this in the U.S. Any advice appreciated.

Hey! As far as I know, they are fixed based on where the unit is sold. But I will check with the manufacturer for you and reply back here.

@@walterdelavega6560 - I've emailed them and just waiting for a reply. I'm sure, worst case, you could always buy a new power supply from Pro-Ject USA should you need and then open the unit to swap.... that said, a simple transformer switch would be much easier!
@walterdelavega6560
@walterdelavega6560 Год назад
@@soundmatters Yes, an external transformer will likely do the trip. Many thanks.

@soundmatters Год назад
Hey! Thanks for waiting here. I've heard back from Pro-Ject. They say you would need to change the internal transformer or use a conventional step-down converter. If you were up for swapping the transformer inside, I'm sure they would send one, but then that might affect warranty. I'd go with the external step down route. Hope this helps - happy spinning!

How is the tank emptied??
@soundmatters
@soundmatters 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for your question. You don't need to empty the tank unless you're cleaning a lot of records to the point of maxing out the tank - which is fairly large. For the majority of home users, it's fine to just allow the fluid to evaporate. This advice is according to Pro-Ject and the user manual. Hope this helps!

Is anybody else having issues with this machine or am I just incredibly unlucky? I’m currently onto my third faulty machine,the vacuum on the first one simply did not work. The motor on the second one sounded very suspect so contacted Henley Audio who assured me that it was normal. After three weeks it literally went bang and stopped working. The current one that I received Wednesday has a faulty sounding vacuum and leaves an odour after cleaning!!

I believe the link you added is to the S2 machine. Not the new e2. The S2 machine gets pretty bad reviews.

Is that the Amazon link? If so, I think it's redirecting if you're based in the US or Canada as they haven't listed the new one on Amazon over there as yet. Sorry for the confusion there.

Just a warning!! I originally purchased the project VC-S record cleaning machine and a few months later it sounded like a jet taking off So I sent it back & they gave me the up grade the VC-E machine (like the one your showing.) 3 month later it too is sounding louder then a Jet taking off!! So I sent it back & got a 3rd one!! a month or so later again sounding louder then a Jet taking off!! Yes it’s a great record cleaning machine but apparently all 3 of my machine's had issues? I did take off the wand & look down the hole & my nuts & motor were all rusted!! . In my humble opinion it is a Good machine & I like the new addition to it, & I also liked it because it grabbed on the label! not sitting on a platter! But, you can't mix metal with water or chemicals hitting metal nuts & screws they will Rust!!! The motor is directly below the wand, where the fluid comes in to the tank! & it all got rusted? They should have design it a little bit differently. So in January I went back to using my ultrasonic machine! Then bought a VPI machine a month or so later which works great. Even though I didn't like the record sitting on the palter it's a Great machine. I did modified it last week so I get to use the old clam from the project machine so the record is not fully sitting on a mat. Hopes this helps..

Thanks Paul. Though it hasn’t happened to me, I have heard about rust complaints. Or maybe I just haven’t noticed the noise increase, it’s always been quite loud. That said, there must’ve been an issue as the latest version of the larger model seems to have some sort of anti-rust coating on the motor. I have sent two of these back,Paul.The third one has a loose vacuum arm,makes a noise like a dodgy exhaust when the vacuum is on. I have been given two options by Henley, a refund or they will personally QC one for me. I'm thinking of getting back in touch today because I agreed to the QC a week ago.

I bought an earlier model VC-E and had a similar issue. The motor in mine went out and sounded like a jet taking off. Upon further inspection, I noticed there was clear liquid coming out next to the motor (gear lube maybe?). My free replacement has worked swimmingly though :)
