I’ve used the RRS BH55 for years and believed it set the standard in its class. I saw the BH-1 and it looked quirky but interesting. I have large hands so I was quickly drawn to how smooth it was to tighten and loosen it to get everything lined up as I wanted. It was so easy and fast and you could tighten it with such ease. I let my RRS BH-55 sit in the closet for about a year and sold it. It’s the best tripod ball head I’ve ever used. It’s also very rugged and built to exacting standards. You can’t go wrong.

There is a lot I like about the BH-01, but I wish it had azimuth markings to facilitate panos better.

Nice review. I've recently bought one of the offset L brackets PMG make and aside from being a well thought out and well designed product it feels over-engineered in a good way which is never a bad thing in my books.

Absolutely love the PMG builds. My setup is almost entirely on PMG and not once has it even struggled to cope. Love the design, love the build, love the quality. Huge shout out to the PMG team.

It is surprisingly cool! If you use code EM10, you will get 10% off if you’re ever interested. That should make it cheaper than the RRS :-)

I have large hands and can see the BH-1 being very comfortable. I have the PMG TR344L with the BH-55 and haven’t ever considered changing. It might be worth a try

I remember your videos on your Acratech ballhead. I don’t remember you doing a video explaining or announcing your switch from Acratech to RRS. Or did you?

RRS BH55 and BG40 are the best in class.... there are many good alternatives, but for my $20,000 Leica rig, I only trust RRS heads and tripods.

I like the design of the PMG BH-1 except for the location of the spirit level in the base. Since it is directly underneath the centre of the ball, it will be impossible to eliminate the parallax error when trying to level it. The RRS ballhead with the pano-clamp seems to be superior setup for panoramas. I am in the market for a new tripod/ballhead and thus will appreciate feedback from those with experience with either RRS or PMG. Looking for advice......

You need to consider a tripod with a level base for the panos...

Glad you did this video, there are virtually no videos or reviews on the PMG head short of one bad review on B&H... I'd love to buy this but without any history or track record like the RRS I'm reluctant. One thing I'd like to note, if you use a bowl head system and the bowl doesn't have a level on it (some do not), the PMB head has a level on the base whereas the RRS does not so I could see that being an issue for some users. Most of us probably use fluid heads however for that purpose.

I love PMG products. I’ve always subscribed to the buy once cry once philosophy.

Check out the SunwayFoto xb-44 with panning clamp. Ive been using it for seven years now and I'm very pleased. It's sitting on a gitzo 3541 mountaineer.

can u get a lever lock with the BH-1
@ericvaughan11
@ericvaughan11 3 года назад
PMG doesn't make one, but I saw that Nick Page when he reviewed this Ballhead had put a RRS lever lock on his. So if you want to spend a little extra and buy one from RRS, you can do that. I'm going to try one of these and if I love it will put a RRS lever lock on it, I love those over any other I have ever tried.

Useful review. I own RRS gear and have started exploring PMG gear after I was not that satisfied with the L-Plate of the RRS. PMG did not disappoint. Suresh/France

The load capacity of the BH1 against the BH55 is quite a concern, any thoughts?

Hi, I have made a couple of videos about what separates PMG from others. Here is one of them :-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7mSXndA_lKE.html

I can't speak for other tripods much... i went from a vanguard altapro2+ - to a PMG 344L -- but for me functionally the build quality is awesome, other tripods i looked at were also nice but just didn't feel like they suited my tastes. I wanted something that was over-the-top and not a chance of me overloading the tripod's capabilities. PMG certainly does that for me. i don't want to be buying new tripods every few years, need to be like the good ol' days, one tripod for life. i assume RRS makes really great tripods too.. but the apex looks beefier on the PMG and has a couple other 1/4 20 ports for some side accessories on the apex which is nice for some external remote trigger controls like MIOPS or external monitors etc.

What about the Achratech Ball head I have it and its really stable and easy
@FindingMiddleEarth

Yes, Acratech is another great one, but I’m really loving the BH-1 and Bh-55 lately. Incredibly stable

Well.... For a ball head like this a present I would have said the same!... Don't take me wrong I like very much PMG and I own the Tomahawk gimbal which I think it is the best junior gimbal out there and as I own the Gitzo GT5432LS I'm not thinking at the moment for a tripod, maybe in the future... 😉 I was thinking changing my old BH-55 with the BH-1 but from the couple videos here I'll re-think about it and the reasons are: First the always stiff handling of the BH-1 (for the lack of friction control) as it is really annoying at the field when you need the smoothness and the free movement (after release of your ball head) of your camera, second as my BH-55 it is old model the friction button it is the same as the rest 2 in RRS and NEVER had a problem confusing or releasing by mistake the friction or the pan knobs, the new little lever instead it is still better as I worked with this with a friend's new BH-55... Third, the central knob of BH-55 locking (with three fingers) with just a 1/4 to a 1/3 turn and of course unlocks the same in contrary with the workhorse of FLM's CB-48FTR of another friend and now I'm finding out from the videos here that the BH-1 need this over turning (not like FLM's but still...) except if the people here using it, they are afraid if will stay locked... One more thing it is that the groves in BH-55 central knob NEVER let me down and I used it in New Zealand with snow & gloves and in Central and Western Australia's desserts, never slipped and always easy to find without looking... As for the lever in the clamp if you like it you can gave the BH-55 with a screwing one and cheaper too... If you actually position the BH-55 in the tripod diagonally for the central knob to look left from the centre your left hand will automatically (and ergonomically) positioned front of the knob without turning your wrist and the cuts of the head will be front and 90' left for portrait... Here I will mention the superiority of the BH-1 and maybe it is the only reason I will seriously reconsider as the build quality in both looks the same...

nice review, and good choice in using the Nikon for the demo camera, as it to also has that red accent on the grip, which goes nicely with the pro media gear ball head, they match each other quite nicely.

Every time i think i'm nearing the end of stuff i need/want in photography, you review another awesome product :) like the others i'm extremely happy you reviewed the BH1. i'm flat broke right now so it's off the card for now, but you gave me some real nice points to consider when i un-break my bank account. hey Tony if you're reading this you need to make something that goes between my 344L and my (crazy awesome) GkJr Gimbal.. but whatever it is must in titanium white coating... B-) maybe a quick release plate between the tripod head and legs... similar to the B2-LR-II and TH-DVTL-40 combo :) faster head changes that way --- stole this idea from Steve :) -- pmg rocks
