Very informative! I had a similar idea for recording a self-video using a ring light this way, with a separate stand for the camera/phone. And this video demonstrated the exact thing with a precise description! Thanks for sharing the idea with us.
About "flat light" Well duh its flat, people use the ring light for the catch light in the eyes not for "cinematic look" then you're better off with a softbox
this info is absolutley amaziing mr. Simone. I've got one ring light , and i didn't know why it worked amazing with youtubes, but when i used it , the result was so unflattering to say the least. thank you so very much for sharing your secrets!
I think you and most other young people have completely missed the idea behind ring lights. I was about to give you a history lesson to explain where they came into use and the look that photographers were after when they first started using them for portraits but then I realized it would be much simpler to ask you one question; why use a ring instead of any other shaped light?
What app are you using on your phone that synchronizes with your prof camera? Can you share your camera settings to bring the dramatic portrait effect?
Thank you for your video! I just bought one of those ring lights yesterday with the phone holder in the middle. I didn't like it and thanks to your video, I will purchase the light separate. It makes so much sense and so many things I'll be able to do with it separate! Thank you again! Keep up with your videos...I'm learning so much🥰
Thank you, Simon, for the explanation. But i advice to look ad your mic or sound of it. It sounds if your voice is constant clipping of that you are using a distortion... . Maybe the incoming volume of the mic is to high? It is in the lower frequencies.
There aren't, the whole point of a ring light is having even lighting on the subject and minimize shadows, the "wrong way" is the only reason you'd ever need to buy a ring light. It's utterly pointless to buy a ring light to use as a regular key or fill light, just get a regular panel if you don't intend on putting a camera in the middle of it, it will be a lot cheaper and more useful overall. Most people have no use for a ring light for the reasons he outlined (you usually don't want even lighting), the only reason every wannabe youtuber buys one is because beauty/makeup youtubers use them a lot, because it's one of the few situations where you actually want that sort of lighting setup, and clueless people just copy what they see other people doing instead of doing their research. This dude is either clueless or the video is intentionally wrong to get hate clicks.
He’s missing the entire point of a ring light. You are better offf buying a cheaper led panel light or spot with modifiers. Ringlight tend to be quite overpriced.
Last video i watch was comparising dynamic microfones, and i have to say; i have to stop under minute watch this just because this annoys me 🙊 (Edit: i check newest video after that and it was wayyyy better 👍)
That works if you're taking pictures of supermodels but for normal people it's probably better to just fill in everything with light. Flatter is better when the subject is an average person.
