Pro Photographer Risks His Career 

Just want to say a quick thanks to everyone who’s left supportive comments regarding the move it means a lot as this really is a huge risk, I always reply to all the comments which I will in due course but just wanted to say thanks it’s much appreciated 👍

Living the dream Stuart! Landscape photographer, own gallery, selling your work, bar next door... I'd live in it.

Appreciate that most of your punters aren't the photographers that watch your channel, but you've built a huge audience that will willingly amplify and recommend you based on your skill, reputation, credibility, integrity and honesty. That's a solid platform to help you launch this new venture Stu and as Dave say, nobody deserves it more. Good luck mate

Mate I'm absolutely buzzing for you. Can't believe it's so long ago we had many many sunrise chats about the pros and cons of giving up a good job to start that gallery. Wow! That's phenomenal! I'm retired now but have worked for a few small business owners and I've always had the greatest respect for those who can "go it alone". If I had tried that, I'd have ended up locked away somewhere in short order -- I just don't have the personality / mindset for running (and supporting myself from) my own business. Very impressive and hope it does great!

The old place really had its charm, but by the look of it you clearly needed more room and not only above your head 😅 … the new place appears very nice and I like this concept of a two-storey gallery. I wish you much of luck and if I am around one day I will certainly pay a visit. 😊

Hi Stuart, firstly best of luck with your new venture. As a landscape photography gallery owner myself, much of what you said in the video was familiar and I shared your feelings. I had a gallery for 11 years, latterly in Cheddar Gorge, it was successful with enough space to display my work from all over the UK, rather than just Somerset, much like you with your Lakes images. However, we (my wife & I) opted to close up and take life a little easier in our more senior years, and go back to just doing some shows/events and online to keep the business going, but on a reduced scale. Like you, a big risk. I hope the new gallery works for you and I look forward to visiting it sometime on one of my visits to the Lake District in future.

I can see there's a huge amount of potential in your new space and I have every confidence in you making a success of it too. You have a very impressive portfolio of images, which when displayed in the right surroundings will undoubtedly create the right kind of impact. The trick is to give your potential customers the ability to visualise your work in their homes. If they can see an image working in a particular space they have, you're almost home and dry. Haven't been to the lakes since 2016 when I run off to marry the wife there without anyone knowing 😂, so it was good to take a walk through Keswick with you. Brought it all back. Wish you all the best in the new venture

Congrats, this is huge! The possibility of hosting exhibitions is exciting, too. Maybe there are local schools or photography groups who would appreciate the space for that. Maybe there's room for a print lab, too?

the very best of luck to you. timing as you say is key. I was about to give up my career a few years ago to become a full-time pro photographer, but I got sick (blood cancer) and that was that. I gave up work, yes; I had to! But the dream of leading workshops in waterfall country in the Beacons died. I'm sure you'll make a massive success of the place - it looks ideal for hosting exhibitions, etc. And hopefully it'll be somewhere you and your son can share and enjoy together 🙂

I visit the lakes a lot and I did attempt you current gallery in the winter last year but it was closed so hopefully I'll drop on and you'll be open next time I come up. I think being in Keswick you'll 100% get more footfall as Seascale is a little out the way of the main touristy hubs unless your heading iver to wasdale. I'm sure you've made a good choice.

That image you took on the Tamron you should put the raw file into DXO PureRaw 4 and they have some technology that can bring back detail. I've tried other noise reduction software and DXO is the best even restores loss colors due to high ISO. When I use good lens I turn sharpening off for DXO for wedding photography. I do have one lens that is soft on the long end my Panasonic 14-140mm and DXO fixed it like it was a good lens.

Handy for the ‘spoons as well 😁

With every A2 print or larger include a free pint at the bar.
