On Tuesday morning the Ukrainian government announced it had ordered the halting of flights at Donetsk airport and the closure of the airspace across the region. The airport was almost completely empty, except for a few stranded travelers.
Later in the day, VICE News visited a Ukrainian regional military college where pro-Russia rebels had set up a perimeter surrounding the entrance to the building, blocking the road of any traffic. A Donetsk People's Republic spokesperson said they heard that the Ukrainian ultra-nationalist group Right Sector was going to seize the academy and use it as a base.
In a sign of increased escalation, the militia in Donetsk was well equipped with AK-47s, RPGs, and even anti-tank missile launchers.

My point was more that journalists should use vague, but correct terms to avoid sounding stupid, since if you make a little mistake like that, people can ultimately question the validity of your statements even more. It's a shame that Simon got into some shit and had to be replaced, while I didn't agree with some points he'd make, it was reassuring he knew the language and was knowledgeable about the general situation among other things.

jakatom but it wasn't caused by ukrainian nationalists (or how you call them "fascists". At least they are under some government control, but prorussians are under russia control.). everything started from ukrainian march which was then attacked by prorussian armed people. and they had not only baseball bats, but guns and machine guns. and the most terrible is that they were covered and protected by local corrupted police. and then was the massacre.

I think Ponomajev was successful in making Simon silent in the time, where his enduring and daring reports have been needed the most. Crimea was quite clear, the first protests in Donetsk, etc. were quite understandable, but now it's the real deal, where the claims and the fights are so large, that it's getting really complicated and necessary for a daring reporter like Simon. No offense to the exchance reporter for his important job, but i miss Simon in this particular moment.

These Vice Russian Roulette Dispatches have been (and continue to be) absolutely fascinating - an amazing running series of on-the-ground front-line interviews and footage. These journalists/journalist-cameramen put themselves directly in the middle of an evolving whirlwind of a situation that has - week by week - seen the para-military mobilization of thousands of ordinary citizens. A right-there look at an extremely complicated economic and societal situation that's been exacerbated by external, opportunistic, surprise Russian military, FSB/military-intelligence operations. A situation that seems to be heading towards open clashes of heavily armed soldiers and militia and possibly a larger civil war. Watch as it happens - see the fire being lit. The footage, and its masterful editing, is fantastic. Watch it all to see amazing slices of the evolution of what's really happening on the ground. The series seems to be refreshingly neutral. For months they've been talking to everyone who is willing to speak on camera - all sides are represented. See what it's like. Great journalism.

Ukrainians have several years compulsory military service in which they are trained to use all kinds of such weapons. Are you suggesting that they would forget all their training instantly upon leaving the military? I'm pretty sure that they would still know how to use guns, even several years after leaving the army. My friend was in the army 6 or 7 years ago, but he still knows the training.

I've been watching these Ukrainian reports for a while and I haven't seen one of these pro-Russian separatists folks carrying an AK-47. That seems really weird to me as there are plenty of people in the States that would choose an Ak-47 over an AR-15 or M4 or AK74. I'm not sure what that means about the supplies the separatists have. It seems fishy
@NixNihilistEsquire
@NixNihilistEsquire 10 лет назад
The AK 74M is the Ukrainian and Russian service rifle and IE what they seize most often. If I seized arms from a British military base for instance I'd expect to see LA85's and no SLR's. Like the British did with the SLR's, the Russians sold off or destroyed most of their old rifles a long time ago. The AK47 is so popular in the states because of the readily available quantities of steel surplus ammo and discount AK derivatives imported from former eastern bloc countries such as Romania and Belarus.

Actually they look a lot diffrent and have diffrent caliblre, too. It's also not about using the wrong term I guess. It's more about using a catch word like "AK-47", wich in public perception sounds dangerous or otherwise "deviant". Instead of using the wrong term/name, saying assault rifle or even AK-74 derivate would suggest proper knowledge and a more differentiated professional opinion.

The ukrainian people that i know say, that most of their friends (part of the well educated ukrainians) are already too afraid to go out on the streets for any kind of protest. That could be the reason for the actual "protests" looking so pro russian. 1. You must be a really narrow minded person, to actually hope for russia to help you with your pitiable life. 2. When you look at the "protesters" in Odessa or anywhere in eastern Ukraine, you see people, that seem to have nothing to lose really. Educated people wont try to argue with gun carrying mobs of people, they rather stay in a safe place.

HA. Gotta love how Pro-Russian supporters just assume that these are "peaceful" civilians. These guys took weapons from Army bases and just MAGICALLY knew how to operate them? There is a video out there of "civillians" doing doughnuts in captured APCs...think for yourselves people- Ask someone who has never rode a bike before to do it, they will 100% fall off, you need practice and training! PLUS- these guys were the first people to bring weapons into Eastern Regions into usage, yet they are "peaceful". Of course if the Ukrainian army is fired upon, it will fight back, and it the ones who fired first who should bare responsibility of any accidental civilian deaths. Lets be honest....its just a handful of pro-Russian gunmen who want to be part of Russia, and have successfully suppressed the Pro-Ukrainian civilians who cant show their support for their Government without being labelled as Nazis and beaten up/killed. Seriously, fuck Putin and his inferiority complex. Play with your own toys instead of stealing other peoples.
@ugn669
@ugn669 10 лет назад
USSR had army training in schools, around 8-9th grade. On top of that everybody was required to serve in the Army, they're trying to switch to a contract system (like one in the US) but not having much luck with it. So yeah, it's not surprising at all that all of those people know how to operate an AK, they could probably strip and clean an AK in their sleep, with one hand tied behind their backs. Regarding the weapons being "brought in", they're mostly weapons that were seized during captures of police and SBU buildings. There were news of them taking some army posts as well, which could explain the RPGs. Ukraine continues to claim that the border is secure after all. Now, I'm not defending these "kolorads" (colorado potato beetle) but at least get your facts straight before you start spewing opinions.
@DUKEBLADE
@DUKEBLADE 10 лет назад
Well you clearly did not understand what I meant. Yes, there are multiple military training schools within Ukraine which are very much USSR styled that continue to operate today, indeed, if you dont go to higher education in Ukraine one of the common options is going to military school- i know this as I have many friends in Western Ukraine who do this. BUT, they do not teach how to use anti-tank missiles, the operation of armored vehicles and other heavy weaponry. Its really not in a states interest to educate their young population in such a way, imagine what could happen! Even so, an AK tear down is exceedingly easy, it only has like 5 working parts anyway and any idiot can look like they know what they are doing if they are pointing it in the right direction- that's why the AK has been the weapon of millions of deaths across the world. HOWEVER when I mentioned the weapons being brought in, I meant weapons to further their own political ends, for example the presence of them in the "peaceful" protests. Of course these were taken from currently standing military/police bases. If you had actually read what I said, these separatists were the first to fire shots and use them for their own ends. Until that time, the military didnt fire a single shot. Please actually attempt to read what people have said mate!
@ugn669
@ugn669 10 лет назад
KMA Freddie No, you clearly do not understand what I mean. These people know how to operate the weapons because they were ALL trained in the use of said weapons. Everybody in the Soviet/post-Soviet army learns how to handle AKs of various modifications and models. All of the infantry, and many non-infantry, also learn how to operate AT weapons and portable AA weapons. That's what being in the army means, you learn how to fight. When every male is required to serve in the army it's no surprise that every male knows how to use weapons. Plus we haven't actually seen them use these weapons, they carry the AKs, but for all we know most of them may not even be loaded... Let me clear up my previous post further: you said "first people to bring weapons into Eastern Regions" -- they didn't BRING weapons into the area, they confiscated them and used them in the same area. Confiscated is a bit of a strong word here, they pretty much waltzed into the police buildings while armed with sticks and a few handguns, maybe a hunting rifle or two. Perhaps it would be more fair to say that they were handed these weapons, because sure as hell nobody put up much of a resistance to keep them away. "Lets be honest....its just a handful of pro-Russian gunmen who want to be part of Russia" -- is simply not true. If it were only those people then the Ukrainian "anti-terrorist operation" would've been done with them a long time ago, instead of running for nearly a month without any results. That's exactly the problem, that a significant portion of the residents are in support of the "pro-Russian" side, they're even asking to be given weapons so they could help fight off the army when it decides to finally make a stand. At this point I'm not very clear on what you're trying to say, the only part of your posts so far that made sense was "fuck Putin" but you didn't have to go and write an essay just to say two words.
@giannislainas5187
@giannislainas5187 10 лет назад
KMA Freddie You got no idea of what you are saying...unlike US military that is mercenary,a lot of other countries have mandatory army training...like in my country Greece...i went to the army,i know how to operate weapons...i was in the infantry...so i only know the simple stuff...other Greeks tho go to the artillary or tanks regiments...so you can find a lot of Greeks that can operate tanks or artirelly...the same was in Ukraine till very recently...what is happening in Ukraine is civil war...plain and simple.

You seriously buy that, even with ZERO conclusive evidence of people being "slaaughtered" outside of doctored shots of Odessa that don't even show that the Russians fired first and threw molotovs?

As an outsider, I get all sides of this situation. No one is really right or wrong. On one side , these pro russian rebels are like a step child. Displaced by their own government in a nation that doesnt embrace their cultural differences. You can take the land but you cant expect people to give up values or language. On the other hand, Ukraine has every right to enforce integration at every part of its jurisdiction. Including reintroduction with the West. Russia stole what it gave away years ago in the disguise of "the will of the people " They didnt care about the people then, they certainly dont care about the people now. All Russia cares about is increasing the distance between Moscow and their border. Its a vulnerability to them. Naturally they will protect such interests by encroaching Belarus and Ukraine. But make no mistake..this is not about the people. If it were, i think the most appropriate action would be for Crimea to become its own slavic state.
@rodricksteal1729
@rodricksteal1729 2 года назад
Crimeans are very happy to be with russia. None of us want to go back to Ukraine, we remember these days as a nightmare. To become a slavic state would be to ask ukrainian fascist to invade so no thank you. We democratically (cause that's the western value? do you understand that people have a right to decide for themselves?) want to be with russia. Mind your business, you can have your western Ukraine, but Novorossia is with Russia, because people want it so)

I am from Donetsk. I repeat once again: and there was not in the right sector of Donetsk region. And all the labels that are hung on them do not meet the reality. That's all for Kremlin propaganda pro-Russian "vatniks". And the phrase "punitive operation" that Moscow used to fear is the anti-terrorist operation against militants with weapons. No peaceful population that goes to work or the store does not kill. Moreover separatists who are not seen in the hostilities, guarantee amnesty.

Come on people. They are not 'well trained' or 'heavily armed'. It's obvious these are all army vets or current army sympathisers. Most of the leaders are older and probably fought with the Soviet Union. There is probably a small Russian presence who want to fight, kind of like jihad all over the world that the west sponsors except they're doing it for their slavic brothers and sisters. The weapons would easily have been obtained from stockpiles in the region and they are not difficult to use, an ak47 is not a 'heavy' weapon. Look at the Ukrainian army, it's got APC's, tank's, jet's and heli's - they are heavily armed. This video even demonstrates the lack of discipline and structure these guys have, at the end he says how they weren't supposed to be there at all. And the way they stand with their rifle supported on their arm is NOT DISCIPLINED, if they were Russian troops they'd have it in their hand and shoulder 24/7. At the same time both the Russians and the US/EU are interfering in the situation and have been from the start, but take your pre-conceived bias against one country elsewhere as it's fucking stupid...
@eduarddv00
@eduarddv00 10 лет назад
vice, try calling the people of donetsk as anti-kiev, instead of pro-russia. this terminology is very important because of western tendency to regard russia as 'the other white people' and an evil state. donetsk republic doesnt necessarily want to join russia, it only wants law and order, free of kiev henchmen that are constantly killing unarmed civilians here. the funny thing is the democratic referendum in donetsk and lugansk are dubbed as 'against the constitution' which i find hilarious because the initial coup in maidan was the one which clearly stood against the ukrainian consitution. oh, and the whole bullshit thing about russia violating human rights in ukraine, it's so twisted by cnn. it is kiev who massacred protesters in odessa and mariupol, not russia. they are also silently kidnapping vocal activists which their whereabouts remain unknown to this day. the people here in donetsk have reached the point of no return. we have run out of patience for the kiev government. kiev doesnt want a united ukraine. kiev wants a country that is purely fascist, russiaphobic and bows to western rule.
