This is massive underselling of Omaha in my opinion. I came for the College World Series twice and loved it. The first thing I noticed about Omaha was that it's pretty. The entire city sits on rolling hills throughout the entire area. I've been to Omaha twice, and both times my initial reaction was "oh, this is so pretty...I love it here." Next I noticed how beautiful the downtown area is, including the bustling old market area, the beautifully landscaped area around the baseball stadium with ultra-modern buildings, and the nice main part of downtown which looks like a traditional downtown. Next I noticed how massive the historic area is, with homes from the 1900s-1920s stretching for many miles. They have lots of homes with front porches, huge trees, and hilly, picturesque streets. One thing that stands out is that Omaha didn't lose a lot of neighborhoods that in most cities would have been taken over by gangs and criminals. In Omaha, even the older neighborhoods with modest homes from the 1940s-1950s are clean, safe, and well-kept. I was amazed. Omaha also has some neighborhoods with their own little urban districts, like Blackstone, Dundee, and Benson. Loved all of them. I was also amazed on how many shiny, new modern buildings have gone up as people are moving back into the city. They also have some gorgeous parks in the historic area (Memorial Park, Elmwood Park) which are visible near the University of Nebraska campus, giving the center of town a clean, urbane vibe. They also have neighborhoods nearby with amazing mansions such as Fair Acres and Happy Hollow. Driving through these neighborhoods was one of my favorite things about the city. As you go west from downtown on the main drag (Dodge Street), the road opens up into 1960s-1970s-style sprawl with aging malls, gas stations, etc. However, Omaha did a very smart thing. They converted this road, once you cross the main interstate loop, into a beautiful new interstate going miles west from the city. Driving down that expressway you pass the new Omaha, showing off countless modern, glass office buildings where Omaha's numerous insurance and financial services firms are located. Seeing this reminded me that Warren Buffet lives here and Omaha is a prosperous city as a result. You also pass the original Boys Town, a sprawling campus for troubled youth that is quite beautiful. The city's nicest malls appear along this expressway and eventually the city's newest and most expensive residential developments can be found nearby. What fascinated me about this area is that unlike most cities, Omaha doesn't really have many suburbs. The main suburban area, which is massive, is all in the actual city of Omaha. Yet Omaha has done a pretty good job of urban planning, with a consistent street grid throughout the entire city and a consistent development pattern that gives the area a clean, organized feel, even in the suburbs. As a consequence of this development pattern, Omaha is unique in that the main city politically speaking is more like a giant suburb with leadership that seems to include professionals and middle/upper middle class households, something in most places only found in affluent suburbs while the main cities are dominated by lower income segments of the city. Omaha does have one segment of the city that is crime-ridden but the area is kind of tucked away in one corner, so most areas of the city are not dangerous. If I were selling the city of Omaha, my focus would be on how affluent, safe, prosperous, well-organized, and pretty the city is. Even in the center city, they have immaculate parks, shiny, new mid-rise apartment buildings, and charming restaurant districts. The affordability and the features such as college football, zoo, and relative lack of hot, humid weather I would consider a bonus but the main thing is that is pretty, very prosperous, and booming.
Henry Doorly Zoo is a must do in Omaha. It has some extreme grade hills, though, so if mobility challenges bring or rent a scooter. Eating is great so no need to bring snacks.
The thing I love about Omaha is how low crime it is. It has a couple of bad parts. North Omaha is bad but even that is absolutely nothing compared to the worst parts of Milwaukee. And the rest of Omaha is great. Very safe for a big town
Watching this now but moved here in 2017 from South Florida. I can say since moving here we have been able to afford more things, pay down debt, have a savings. Our car insurance dropped about $300, schools have been amazing for the kids, our neighbors are amazing people, our house payment is cheaper than rent was back home, traffic is better (we have yet to be tailgated, flipped off, cut off etc). Sure we have higher taxes here but we're still paying less than we were in Florida. We do miss the beach, being near water, a lot of the nightlife Omaha is lacking and certain types of food that we have yet to find here. While there may not be mountains here, I don't find Omaha to be flat compared to my home state, I love having seasons (though sometimes the wind with the cold kills me). I love having apples and pumpkins to pick, Christmas trees to cut down and actually feeling in the holiday spirit.
Same. I am in Oregon and hate it, I just want somewhere quieter than the Portland area with nicer people at this point. I wanted TX or FL, I like it warm but Ill take winter if it means its managed and I can still get around.
@@Tyler_Bundy when is Omaha going to have a shopping mall downtown where I can buy Jean's, shoes, socks, sun glasses, and headphones? There ain't shit downtown Omaha
Thanks for clearing that up Tyler! Omaha has been a great city to me and my family since we moved in back in 2007. To add a couple more Pros we have an excellent zoo here really diverse one of the best in the world and growing every year. Also higher education is much more affordable here compared to other parts of the country not forgetting that Omaha is now known as the silicon prairie as giants tech companies are moving in making IT jobs very much available.
Thanks Jonathan. Those are great additions. I think I would like to some more research on the silicon prairie. I have heard it said but haven't looked much into it... thanks for sharing
Thank you for the very informative video! I just now applied for an apartment complex in Omaha. I’ve lived in Texas all my life and am so tired of the constant heat (even often in the winter). It wasn’t my first choice (I wanted to move to Colorado) but finding cheap apartments was a breeze compared to Colorado. Hoping everything works out and that I’ll be a Nebraskan soon!
I love the Old Market area. The most awesome records stored in the region are there, especially Homer's Music & Gift. Drastic Plastic is just across the street.
Wow! People here are sweethearts! Only been here 2 days and honestly the only thing I do miss about Cali is that it never gets passed 65 degrees ! Haha was not ready for -0 temp! 😬
I lived in Omaha til I was 9 before my mom and I moved out to San Diego. One of my favorite experiences in Omaha was eating the cheese dip at Romeo's. Returned to Omaha on vacation a few years back and went to Romeo's about 4 or 5 times during my week long vacation.
I have never been to Omaha or anywhere in Nebraska. However, one advantage of Omaha that I have heard about is their accent. Omaha is in a region of the United States where General American English is spoken. A big chunk of eastern Nebraska, Most of Iowa, a big chunk of western Illinois, and a thin sliver of northern Missouri is where this accent is spoken. Of all General American English, this area speaks the most general, generic, and non-descript accent in the United States. This is a good thing. It is one of the reasons why Omaha is a center for tele-marketing. I am from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and our dialect has some very distinct features. Boston and New York City also have unique accents.
Moving to Omaha due to military. I am tired of family/friends telling me how horrible it is without having been there themselves. This video helped us a lot, thanks!
My husband and I both came to Nebraska via Offutt AFB. I came in 1981 and hubby in 1985. We both LOVE Omaha, Nebraska. It’s the best place both of us ever lived. Unfortunately we moved 215 miles west for my husband’s job in 1997 and we’re still out here on the Nebraska prairie. But in 2019 we bought an apartment in district 66 (Westside school district) and we now go to Omaha 2-3 times a month in summer and once a month in winter. I feel 25 years younger just being in the Omaha city limits. It’s so clean and the streets are on a grid pattern so it’s easy to get around. And there’s Nebraska Furniture Mart, awesome! A lot of military people retire in Omaha, even if they’ve left to go to other bases a lot return to Omaha for retirement.
Great video Tyler! I might be moving back soon! For those considering moving to Omaha there are alot of parks, bike trails and golf courses! Short drive to multiple casinos! Great food scene and plenty of unique neighborhoods for nightlife.
My uncle had a ranch in Halsey and my cousins enjoyed their time there. He raised quarter horses. Being a native Floridian my aunt was not happy with the snow. Later they had a 2nd home on the Platte River in the sand hills. They really enjoyed it as a getaway from Atlanta. You gave me a great idea for Tampa Bay/Pinellas County! Thanks!
I lived for 55 years in Nebraska, in or near Omaha and Lincoln. Now I'm in Florida. What do I miss, besides family and friends? I miss the outdoor events in Omaha (the arts and craft festivals, the Farmer's Market, Jazz on the Green, Shakespeare on the Green, Playing With Fire and the Soaring Wings blues events.) I miss the lively blues music scene, in fact if you like live music then Omaha is surprisingly good. I miss the Joslyn Art Museum. I miss Godfather's pizza, Runzas and Espana Tapas Bar. And I miss having a Guiness at Toads in the Old Market on a sunny afternoon.
Came across this because we are planning a move for next year. My in laws live in Omaha very close to zorinsky lake. We’re coming from Vegas. The only area that I know and like is zorinsky lake area. Can you give me any more neighborhoods or areas to explore similar to zorinsky lake?
Well thats Great! Zorinsky lake area is in West Omaha... Many of those neighborhoods in west omaha will be very similar to the Zorinsky lake area minus the lake... We live in Cinnamon Creek that is south west of zorinsky lake and we love it!
Looking for cities to move with my new family and this seems perfect, I hate New York so much a studio is on average over $1,500 in Manhattan and no I’m not kidding.
Hei..That is a good fact about property taxes that you have shared . Do your kids attend the public school ? I wish I could get an opportunity to become a teacher in one of the public schools here in Omaha. I am here since June 2018
My kids do attend a public school here. Each school is different and i would encourage anyone do do there research... Im so grateful for teachers an hope that if becoming a teacher here is what you want to do to make it a goal of yours!!!

I have lived in nebraska my whole life and i love it. Every one for the most pert are super nice. The zoo here is amazing and their is always some thing new to go see in the zoo.
Tyler, as a native Nebraskan, you nailed it about Omaha. The taxes are a burden, just no two ways about it. The weather is tough, again, just no two ways about it. Check out Lincoln, Fremont, Grand Island, Hastings, Scottsbluff, North Platte, and all the other beautiful cities and towns. GO BIG RED!
This is what I like to do for entertainment of going to museums, playing video games, and historical sites. I rarely drink and want a nice place that’s affordable for under $800 a month.
@Solitude Of Heart I wish I mean it sadly it’s like every house to have a roommate nobody could afford to live on their own by themselves anymore unless they have a relative that financially helps them combined with getting Social Security.
@Solitude Of Heart 12,00 wow I would thing a quarter or half cheaper. That’s the cost of what is out here in California. The part of California I am in and I live 2 hours north of Sacramento.
@Solitude Of Heart what most people don’t realize is that not all of California is the same once you get to North Sacramento it’s basically like living in the south minus the mount of churches in southern hospitality meaning it’s very Christian and very Republican and the cost-of-living is a lot cheaper here but it’s still kind of expensive. Once you are south of Sacramento in definitely west of Sacramento then the cost starts rising is California or divided up it would be generally everywhere north of Sacramento California would be its own state and it would be filled with a bunch of conservative Christian Republicans. When I hear San Francisco being called northern California I just laugh my ass off. Kids from places north of Sacramento moved to the big city because that’s where the jobs out well the older retirees in definitely Republicans move up here.
@Solitude Of Heart Me and my parents might be moving to Scottsdale Arizona in the next few years once my parents are able to retire. We had a family friend who lived in Chandler at the time and my brother was tired of riding and so he went to Arizona State and then he went to work on the East Coast and then he moved back and he’s now living in Scottsdale.
I lived in Nebraska for 8 years. I love the open air in the countryside and the downtown market. There's a ton of cool bars all around Omaha. But my favorite thing to do is to waking up and seeing the curves of my beautiful ebony wife
The hard thing to do if your looking for a lower cost of living with a higher kind of pay your gonna have a very hard to unless you move to an even lower population like the two dakota states. but you have the shopping centers that you cant get in those places due to the lack of buying population.
Moving out on my own as a 21 year old, been thinking about moving to Omaha from friends who lived there, is it an affordable place for someone on their own at my age?
Technically a skyscraper is defined as a building that is 150 meters or 492 ft. Also, I would consider a slight con to living in Omaha to be that it isn't very close to many cities. Omaha is an easy days drive to Kansas City and Des Moines but that's about it except for smaller places like Lincoln, Sioux Falls etc.
East and west coast aren't making fun of such places as Omaha anymore, because of great schools and family life is a great thing here, -unlike where they once lived, !!!
Public schools in Omaha are not good. I lived there when I was little, and I moved to Texas. I was really behind compared to my other peers I had to stay after school pretty much all of the school year. When I came back to Nebraska they were so impressed by how smart I became
Born and raised in Omaha. Omaha is and always has been discounted as a small town. Metro area is pretty large. Every big city has its issues. Outside of Omaha and Lincoln if you really want a corn life its there. I moved 6 years ago to the south with no regrets . Visit KC pretty similar. LIVE IN LOUISIANA BUT I AM STILL GBR!!!
VERY safe for a big town. Now, when I say safe, thats relative. Its still a city and no place Omaha's size is gonna be as safe as a city of 50,000 or less people. But for a big town, its really safe
@@Tyler_Bundy; Stay in your beautiful state and city, don't ever Go to New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, or Orlando, you will Regret it. And don't ever, and I mean EVER visit New Jersey. You live in a NICE PLACE, remember that the People MAKE the place. Or brake it.
honestly, as a Floridian who is exhausted of tourists and tourist attractions, I genuinely think not having that kind of stuff to do wouldn't bother me, as long as I had some nature stuff to do.
Omaha looks like some parts of Tampa do from what I see. I take a connection to it maibe because of that. I see a midwest feel kinda thing and a place I could relax in.
Hey I'm happy to help in any way that I can. The average income in omaha Nebraska is about 43k per year but it also depends on the industry your in. What's even more crazy is at the salary you typically can afford a 200k house which comes out to be about 1700 per month for a 3-4 bedroom house and has about 1700 sq/ft. Shoot me an email or text and we can talk about more specifics for you! Tbundyhomes@gmail.com 4024036208
Omaha and Lincoln have a lot of schools which that is good because most kid can now get educated and tried to graduated most in Omaha help students know what it means and how they know which I really like this place I lived in Omaha for 12 years and 4 month which is pretty good. Omaha is a pretty good place to relax, chill, and best place to have fun in Omaha
Grew Up in New York City, been to London, Paris, Barcelona, Washington DC, lived in Seattle and I Absolutely HATE BIG TALL BUILDINGS, and I also lived in Chicago, do you know how Disgusting those buildings ARE??!!!
Big question to someone who lives in Nebraska. What city in Nebraska is closest to Colorado or how far is Omaha to Colorado? Living in California I've grown quite fond of marijuana and as much as I'd like to move to Nebraska I would not like to give it up
Omaha is awesome, its one of the fastest growing and amazingly affordable cities in the US, its better than many many cities in the US, promise you! Liberal, Immigrant here! It keeps getting better every year!
@@AD-eq4kndon't know your definition of boring, enlighten us with your view, boring is a vague term and relative to every person, compared to coastal cities thats have beaches or even has mountains nearby, or touristy & glamorous like Vegas, ofcourse it feels boring, but as a Midwest growing city of 500K people, it is not boring, there are a lot of good areas to enjoy spending your time, lots of food, bar, music scenes all over town like Benson, Blackstone, Capitol, Aksarben, Maple, around central dodge, even surrounding cities like La Vista & Papillion are working on some entertainment & rec areas, there are rivers and lakes around, old market area is cool place to hang out, and the downtown area is getting a major $$$ renovation, thats gonna make it more enjoyable & connected, also Casino's across the river, botanical gardens and the Worlds No. 1 Zoo, if you are feeling adventurous head out a few hrs to Calamus lake area, State Parks, or Snake valley for waterfalls, tho its a bit far. Now I do agree that it feels a bit dull once you leave the city limits cause there is nothing until you hit a town, also within the city cause there aren't mountains around, or the craziness of a much densely populated city & the kinda traffic that comes with it, Omaha is spread out, and definately the city needs to work on old roads and make them look nicer & dark, and beautify some areas near the airport, and heading to the zoo and all, its one major reason for boring I think which the city hasn't gotten right, its a lot about visually pleasing mostly that changes people's perception, and I too feel that way in some places around town, But its a really good place to live, and growing, adding more things to do & enjoy, population is growing, and if some improvements are made in some areas I mentioned above it would be even gr8 and touristy, so I would say Yes, but a bigger NOO! Just my 2 cents!
@@SuperDynamite666 music scene? Theres not much music scene in Omaha. Theres more in Lincoln. You can only go to the zoo so many times. The museums are not that great either. Theres not a lot to do in Omaha
@@AD-eq4kn I think the city will be more active & vibrant with time, Ive lived in other bigger cities & traveled many, & besides the 5 best places to hang out in these places, it got boring quick there too, so unless u r talking about mega cities like Tokyo or NYC, u will find most US cities r boring after a while, mainly those that can't get mainstream media attention, thats why I think if Omaha & Nebr was blue it would get so much media attention, it would be a completely diff thing, but thats a diff theory and argument for another day. I think its what's surrounding the city, that keeps you wanting for more maybe, like just scenic places, hiking, mountains, kinda stuff which we do lack, and we could use a bit more population and expand to Lincoln oneday to become a really big metro area full of life & activity, but for now thats the reality of the plains, the State could do more you know to promote itself, its a big state and has many great places to see & visit, & attract people from all over, but its lacking in promoting & supporting commute options, & innovation to drive more inner & outer tourism. Its mostly the state for me is the problem not the city itself. I don't know ur age or experiences tho, those things matter a bit too. Omaha is a place you either love or desire something more from & love seeing growth & expansion, but definately not a place to dislike by any means! I also moved here from GA u know im not native Omahan, yet I keep praising while wishing more, so Im not totally away from what u mean, but there are a lot of things and places around here and its much safer, also easier to commute around town so that makes it worthwhile for me! I love this city, but wish to see more done at both city & state level in the coming years!
I showed my friends from abroad two pictures: one is green lawns and bright sun, the other is thick snow and gray sky. They don’t believe me that it’s two consecutive days in Omaha...:/
I am from Hawaii and have family in NE. I Love Omaha. Probably would never have ever visited there if not for my brother living there. Constantly considering moving there. Love the people and the pace and I love long drives and lack of traffic. Just the winters scare me. Great video brother Aloha. Oh and cost of living except for high property taxes NE if you’ve never been you don’t know 🤙🏽

The Rose Theater for Kids shows, the Lauritzen Gardens, and Passport Nebraska during the summer to find lot of fun things around the entire State. Dirt track racing, Apple Jack festival in Nebraska City.
Its a big nothing burger as most homes that had high level have a mitigation system installed and the rest have level that are like the rest of the country.
