Yes it is! I've never seen before this kind of knowledgements in Spain or in any other units I could know like SBS, KSK or Marine Raiders. Now as a law enforcer is even more difficult to see it, but it really can be so usefull for my unit to track drug dealers from the beach to some isolated camp zones. Humans are the only predator that has the intelligence to track prey by the signs they leave behind. Every other predator tracks by smell or direct line-of-sight. Long after a quarry has left visual range, and their smell has blown away in the wind, a human being can still track it down. This isn't merely a valuable skill, it is the birthright of our species, and what differentiates man from beast.

Couple of questions. Is there a reason for taking a drawing of the footprint versus taking a photo. Is there a way to get a better definition of the print for taking a photo such as sprinkling a white powder. What would you say would be the speed difference of movement between the target and tracker assuming target is constantly moving at about 2mph average. Thanks for the video. Very detailed. I would love to see more.
@borisvos1971
@borisvos1971 4 года назад
Great questions. First on the photos. Taking photographic evidence around an incident is something a forensic investigator will be able to tell you everything about. It's an art to do it well, and to be able to present that evidence in a court of law. Forensic investigators are uncanny in their ability to bring out minute and even latent details in a footwear impression and photograph it. From my perspective as a tracker, drawing the impression gives me a few advantages. First of all, if I only find a partial print (let's say the heel details) I can start putting that in my drawing. As I find more details of the impression further down the track, I can add those into the same drawing. It gives me a single reference to work off, and I don't have to flick through photos on my phone or camera. As you see in the video, it also gives me an opportunity to highlight those details that are of importance to me, like for instance the damaged star in the Vibram pattern. Finally, by drawing the impression it forces me to study the print in detail, etching the pattern in my mind, which helps me recognise it more effectively further down the track. That said, if I get a really good print I will take a picture as well, and put a scale next to it for future reference or to send it to other teams on the task. In regards to the speed difference; this is all depending on the terrain, threat, quarry movements etc. Tracking can be very methodical and slow, or really fast where you could - but you shouldn't in a real scenario - run on the tracks. Koevoet, among others, perfected this in the African Bush Wars, look it up! Ideally, I would have more than one tracker team and another team could jump ahead in the predicted quarry's direction, and "cut for sign", closing the time-distance gap. Unfortunately in this scenario, we don't have that luxury. We will have to figure this one out on our own ;) Stay tuned!

Interesting how the rest of the hunter group are visible in the road. I presume it differ from country to country? Flash backs galore. Cool video. Well made and explained. We hardly ever let the whole hunter group run single file on the spoor. Always 2 out front to left and right and 1 out back all in visual or small audible call signals in contact with the tracker in the middle running the spoor. Out runners always look for anti tracking in line with the spoor. So they are as trained as tracker and rear man anti track hunter group as well as look for signs that might have been missed. Even going in on the spoor single file you can run into a passive/static ambush. Thought I throw it out there. Will like to see the next video. Well done again.

@@borisvos1971 Thanks man. Have you read any of H. John Poole's works? I found it interesting that he places a high degree of importance on tracking training for dismounted light infantry dealing with insurgencies in the sub-unit collection-level Intel cycle. He's an interesting cat for sure. He was a USMC Company Commander in Vietnam, and after 15 years of service as an officer, resigned his commission to be an NCO teaching and running small unit leadership courses and experiments. He lists practical reasons why dismounted units need to be proficient with tracking and field investigative work, by describing in-detail some of the micro terrain in hot spots around the world. These include: * Tunnel networks for smuggling on the Iraq-Syria border * Urban signs for infiltration and escape commonly used by real tribal peoples in several nations in Africa, Southeast Asia, the US-Mexican border, and the Middle East * How unit leaders not trained in tracking and field investigative work are easily out-maneuvered and surprised by cunning locals who have to use their intimate familiarity with their terrain to out-wit our firepower and predictable patterns.
@borisvos1971
@borisvos1971 4 года назад
@@LRRPFco52 Very interesting, and Mr. Poole makes some very valid points. Especially the last bullet point. When operating in an area it is a challenge not to set any patterns. Tracking by opposing forces will allow them to get a sound understanding of those patterns over time, resulting in more focussed and well-timed engagements. Many rural and/or pastoral communities still rely on some level of tracking to keep with their livestock, and they know their areas like the back of their hand. Anything that changes from that baseline, like tracks of a unit moving through, will almost inevitably alert someone. And then we know what's coming. There's a couple of other really interesting applications, that I'm not comfortable talking about on an open forum, but the military application is still very valid. Thank you Sir, for pointing this author out to me. I will have a dive in.

@@borisvos1971 Do you have the "Covert Rural Surveillance" handbook? Written by a guy with a strong Recce background out of the UK. Awesome book really. I was in several recon units in the US Army, including 3 Scout Platoons, Long Range Surveillance, and some others. The best influence on us came from ILRRPS out of Germany, the NATO Coalition Recce, Survival, SUTs school down in Bavaria. We sent a lot of guys to courses there from Corps LRS. The US lacks a fundamental reconnaissance culture of that nature for some reason. Recon is looked at more as a block to be checked in the Troop Leading Procedures and treated almost administratively in our dismounted patrolling schools. There are precious few units who internalize the necessary HUMINT mindset and skills required to do it professionally. Your tracking training would be an excellent course to integrate into Infantry Basic Officer Leadership, Infantry OSUT at Benning, and the Infantry NCO professional development system.

Well shot video. I really do despise the constant need to add "tactical" to everything though. In the mid/late 80's I was paid to hunt insurgents. We used local tribesmen as trackers. Although a trained tracker myself, the local tribesmen were phenomenal in their abilities. I didn't learn much from this video, to be honest. But it is certainly well produced and it is great to see tracking skills still being taught and learned in this age of technology. I have no idea why any African country would employ a European as a tracking instructor, other than clever marketing and self promotion. (Assuming Boris comes from Europe) I could find superior tracking skills and greater "tactical" ability within Africa. If you want to know what it takes to hunt armed men, every day, week after week, year after year then Google "Koevoet". "Koevoet", the book, by American journalist Jim Hooper is a great read on how we tracked and eliminated insurgents. Some of the greatest years of my life.

Tracking is described by some as one of the more dangerous things you can do, as you are not able to choose the ground you walk on and have to follow the track. The fact that you can look back tells me you were good at it. Enjoy the retirement Sir!

Excellent job, this shared some properties of accident reconstruction. The road or path can tell some of the story by the physical evidence left behind even when there is no one to ask (Locard's exchange principle).

Michael Bellinger Hey Michael. David is an absolute legend and a friend, great you have learned from him. In regards to training; I’m fully committed to training and working with the Rangers here, so I don’t have any training opportunities for non-Rangers. I did super basic combat hunter During BWT in bootcamp over a decade ago. We had a Scout Sniper teaching the course. It wasnt super in depth but it was stupid interesting hearing his story about how he was tracking a HVT that he shot and wounded. Ive never heard of Tracking before than in any real context. Its definitely a unique and extremely usefull skill set. This guy breaks it down in a easy to understand the basics. You have captured my attention.

The current world champion: "One of the longest "Escape and evade" actions by a SWAPO freedom fighter was recorded by a Koevoet unit, when during June 1986 Zulu-Four-Sierra and Zulu-Four-Echo Koevoet units picked up a spoor (track) of 2 guerillas north of the cutline near Handabo in Angola. They tracked them south over the cutline, where one turned north back into Angola. The other one headed south, putting considerable distance between himself and the Casspirs every day. They chased him for 5 days, calling helicopter gunship support in the afternoons as the trackers could detect from the spoor that he was near. He managed to remain undetected and the trackers found no signs of sleeping places, and it appears he kept going for 5 days without sleep. Abandoned hypodermic syringes frequently found on his tracks suggested he injected himself with benzedrine or something similar to keep awake. Places were found where he collapsed from exhaustion, dragged himself to a tree, pulled himself upright and continued. Eventually they lost his spoor on the Chandelier Road and it is suspected he was picked up by a car. They had tracked him for 368 km's (228 ml) , which must make it one of the longest Escape and Evade actions in military history."

that is why i wear moccasin specially made that they have no specific front or back so you can not tell direction and you would be fucked..second I would anticipate you follow me and make a ambush by walking straight then turn and walk back parallel on the site of the path and pick you of while you kneel down looking to find my steps which will be hard for you anyway as you assume I would wear heavy boots and calculate how tall I might be...

I talk to this South African Spec Ops guy (retired now) regularly, and he told me he used to free captured native Africans from hands of communist Cubans, that would kidnap them and force into their regime, across Africa. Cuba apparently did a lot of shady stuff in Africa, and was looking to convert and conquer a lot countries in its' infancy. He used to run with a native tracker, he said tracker was amazing, he saved their behinds many times. Spec Ops guy used to free kidnapped as such in Angola, and neighboring countries. Maybe Sudan, I forget now. Trackers see world very differently. Things that look normal, don't look normal to them. Always amazes me the level of detail they see in plain scenery.

@@borisvos1971 When I was a kid, my friend and I hunted doves next to the Magol River in the the northern Bushveld of South Africa. I shot a dove with my kettie (sling shot) and broke its wing. I wanted to let it go as it was half flapping through the jessy (thick riverine under bush). My friend, we were like 8 or 9 years old, procede to track the dove for almost 50 meters. I remembered it felt like magic. I was hooked. Now I teach those skills to the younglings in the family and even though I've been tracking wildlife a lifetime now, I agree with your assessment, those who grew up in the African bush have a skill beyond most and more. Again respect to a fellow craftsman.
