Roy, Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. And yes, I sure love the heck out of carpentry. But don't believe there are any 'master' carpenters or tradespeople in the U.S. That's a classification limited to England and other countries that have formal 'master' programs.

Good morning Gary. I came up with using the 3/4" pan head screws that come with door shoes to put behind the hinge to act as an adjustable shim. Came across your videos the other day and brought back memories. I learned how to hang doors and do trim while working for Guy Evans back in the the early 2000's before he sold. It was a trip to see and hear the same terminology by someone else since I am in Colorado now and its a different animal out here. I am pretty sure that Guy had learned a chunk from you back in the day. I appreciate having your materials on youtube now. I am big into learning everyday and its a great resource to have my new guys watch your videos to learn the right way to do things. Phil B. The Door Store

You did a great job with this video series. And I learned a lot. But you stopped before you mounted the Strike Plate. This is something I struggle with because I can't find good instruction on this. I always wing it and half the time I hate the results. Thank you again for the awesome video.

Funny you mention that, Darrell!!! I kind of started thinking I'd run off at the mouth for long enough and no one was going to watch. But I did shoot video with my phone for IG of installing the strikes for the casement latches. I'll try to post that soon. And NEXT time, I'll shoot video for YT. !

Always the greatest educational videos on RU-vid! I have learned a tremendous amount about finish carpentry. I want to thank you for your time that you take to explain in detail about how to do finish carpentry correctly like a pro. I did go to Amazon to order your video on hanging doors and it’s currently unavailable do you know when it will become available again??? I have five prehung doors that I’m going to be hanging in the next week or so for a client and I will use your method. Thank you.

This hinge jig from Templaco for just $80 seems like a must-have even if you are doing just several doors. You don't want to mess around trying to position a single-mortice jig with 1/64" precision and hope you don't make a mistake. Just use this jig and you'll save hours and avoid pain.

Gary, I'm a professional handyman. I have a few questions, 1. Where do you get the jam stock? 2. Where can one find the lock boring jig you have? All I can get is the cheap plastic ones. 3. Do you know where one can find the old style hinge jig that were used in the 70s and 80s?
@BruceSilver85
@BruceSilver85 8 месяцев назад
1. Lumberyard 2. eBay ( it’s old). Classic engineering boring jig 3. Wasn’t around back then, he’s using a templaco I believe

WAIT! How can you be a doorhanger for over 30 years and not have a PC 126 planer???? :)
@THISisCarpentry
@THISisCarpentry 2 года назад
Oh, the Shaefer family: I learned a lot about hanging doors on my own, before I met Al and Royal. Like a lot of carpenters, I was very confident that the stuff I learned and the system I came up with was 'the nuts', better than anyone eles's.. Of course. Then I met the Shaefers. True pro door hangers. That's when I learned I didn't know bubkis. Most doorhangers I've met are in the same boat I was before I met Al and Royal. No offense meant. Just the plane truth. They could hang 30-40 solid core doors (scribe, plane, butt, bevel, bore) in a day. Easy. Half of them upstairs. $12.00 a door.

Door companies are the villains. It's them who take $3K and then deliver a prehung with hinge screws driven at 70 deg and the sill installed just a 1/4" from the door so the weatherstripping barely squeezes into there. And while a good installer can fix all that, why should they? To teach them it's OK to keep cranking out defective product? It's just making me mad thinking how they could have avoided it by spending probably extra $20 to hire better workers and give them a little bit more time. But thanks to Gary's videos I learned how to do this all myself.

Hi Gary where did you get you Door jig from and very nice work 👍
@THISisCarpentry
@THISisCarpentry 2 года назад
Hey Ian, If you're asking about the lock boring jig, it was made by Classic Engineering. You might be able to find one on ebay. But Templaco makes one, too, which is almost as nice. Unless you're boring 20-30 doors a day, every day, you wouldn't notice the difference. :)
