Pro Tools 12, 11, 10 & 9 & 8 mixing template and techniques (detailed setup)

"Samples" means your regions are locked to minutes and seconds, whereas "ticks" is tempo-based. If you change the tempo while tracks are in samples, the regions will stay where they were in time. If you change the tempo and they're in ticks, the regions and automation will adapt to the new tempo. Sometimes you might have things aren't tempo based, for example sound effects for a video. Audio regions will only time-stretch into a new tempo if Elastic Audio is enabled on the track.

Pretty cool setup. Rather than having a lot of unused tracks, what I do is "import session data" from my template, selecting just the tracks I need. Another way to clean things up is using groups. If you group your submixes, on the Mac you Control+click the group name, and it'll all the other tracks except your submixes. Then you control+click the "ALL" group to view everything. I'm sure it's a similar shortcut on Windows. You could do the same for your audio tracks during recording.

i use a similar mix template but for tracking vocals i still route my vocal tracks to the vocal sub groups so that I can quickly send those to reverbs, delays, etc which that artist may want to hear while tracking

@ Maegan Bootz Ruben Dee and others that had something to criticize this gentleman @TechVitaminsTV settings. First of all as a Engineer with over 20 years in the game mostly in Europe. I came to the US 12 years ago to study American Art & Music engineering. I found out that most Americans students were not in depth with the Art of Mixing Technique. What @TechVitaminsTV is saying is not wrong, the reason that I'm saying that he's not wrong is that every Producers/Engineers/Beatmakers have different ways to produce/engineer their Music. First of all, the reason that you record in a high resolution is to limit the noise threshold when bouncing or mixing down your Mix to Cd which we know is 16 bit correct? Now the reason that most Producers/Music Engineers (professional) Home studio Producers use Templates is to speed up theirs workflow when working on a sessions. Remember that when it comes to producing music or engineering the goal is to develop/learn from everybody because you learn new things all the time. Till then you all be blessed with creating Good Music.

Thanks for showing things that I kind of knew it can do but just don't know where to start looking for them. Rather, I limp along at a crude level because I want to do a cover.. Also, thanks for showing your vocal processing chain. I never thought to use an Expander/Gate. Hopefully, now I'll get that fullness that gets out in front of the mix! RAWK ON!

And not the 128 that TechVitaminsTV has. I checked my other session, that I had 44.1Khz and 24 Bit rate for settings, and I have all 128 buses.

This really seems very efficient for recording in PT. Are there any books that you would recommend learning more about using buses and submixes?

M macbook is 2008, it seems like when I set it up to mix a song in this format the track lags a bit, then i ge a lot of overload messages which prevents me from mixing. I usually have to wait 30 mins. You know how crucial that can be when you are in a session with someone.... Is it me or does this layout take quite a bit of power?

@drclasicoxp i sent you the templates. In terms of not seeing all 64 buses thats weird. which interface are you using? the only thing i can ting of is that the interface will determine how many total buses you can run at the same time and also the KHz you are recording @. Try to go from 48KHz to 96KHz session and see if all 64 show up.

@honestkyle I don't really know any books in particular. I have learned all of this from watching tutorial videos and using their exercise files that came along with them. The site is lynda.com and it's about $35. But they are the best tutorials on the web. All the software I have learned to use in the last 7 years is pretty much from those tutorials.

Dude That's Goofy Don't over think it. Every song is different you just went way off the deep-in. Doesn't work like that. Every Sound-Arist's -Song- Tube-Boot- etc Is Different. Example have you ever notice your mic sounds different from the last session. Why Because every time you boot your gear up. It has a different tube Freq. No matter what it would never sound the same as you did yesterday or the next day.

You did great job. Congrats ! But i have no power to watch it completely. You made a lot of mouth stressed sounds by tongue clicks, pops and a lot more. Sorry, but those sounds are terrible and so annoyance. Have a nice day and do not take this comment so close. You have more over fans who doesn't concentrate on speech and can't hear any artefacts.
