Originally this video was going to be called "A Pro Tools Tutorial for People Who Hate Pro Tools". However, that was too long and perhaps a bit mean. But...here it is. Enjoy Pro Tools videos from RHR for the next few days because I don't plan on broaching the subject again.
Note to self: To change the time base (bars/beats vs. minutes/seconds) click the drop down arrow next to the large time code numbers. To nudge, set your Nudge value in the transport (near the Grid on/off button). Make your selection. Then, use the + and - (plus or minus) keys in the number pad (key pad) area.
Was using Windows with Sonar until the viruses took over. Bought a new Mac and Pro Tools 12 and couldn't get it running correctly for a whole month, until watching your tutorial. I don't think it's the best tutorial out, but it helped me a great deal and that's all that matters. Thanks
watching this 2 years later and still an amazing video. no "subscribe to me" bullshit just great information. Clear and straight to the point. such refreshing content THANK YOU!!!!!
There's nothing wrong with asking people to subscribe. But thank you for the compliment! There really wasn't time for too much nonsense because there was a lot of material to cover.
I’m a music freshman in college and pro tools is proving to be the most baffling thing I’ve ever dealt with, this might have just saved my midterm thank u
As someone brand new to recording and especially ProTools, I found your video on basic navigation and shortcuts one of the best. I learned more in 20 minutes than hours of other videos , including ones from Avid (which are poor imho and assume toooo much) (No I don't "hate " ProTools but it is very complex for a new DAW user" ) Thanks very much.
RealHomeRecording Dude... I just wanna say thank you bro !!! I just switched from Acid Pro 8 to the headache of Pro Tools and ilok keys. Anyway.. Great tutorials and very clear and concise bro. Just very grateful that you took the time to drop your knowledge on me and all P.T. beginners. Thank you.!!
@@RealHomeRecording The content is good. I "Liked" the video after watching it. Good content. All relevant But, the first two to three minutes felt so slow. Speeding it up by 50% helped get through it faster, without missing anything. If you had anything to do with making it, Good Job.
Great demonstration video, dude. This is exactly what I was looking for. I tried a couple of other "Getting started" videos already but they didn't help me. This one's going to be my guide. I've avoided pro tools for years, preferring other systems, but I can't put off learning to use it any longer. This video's going to save me a whole lot of hassle. Cheers.
You use tick tracks when recording audio in order for the audio engine to analyze as is recording. Then is easier to manipulate audio like time stretch and even audio quantizing.
RealHomeRecording.com yeah the thing is that feature got implemented back in version 6.4 or 7.0. The ability to manipulate audio has improved a lot. Before you had to change the setting to ticks before doing any flex time audio manipulation. Now they just ask you at the beginning. You always have the ability to change that later, look at the bottom left of each audio track, a triangle is tick and a blue ball is sample. Change the waveform view to analysis on an audio teack and have fun.
THIS VIDEO JUST REMINDED ME AGAIN WHY I DONT USE PRO TOOLS. AL THE THINGS U MUST DO TO SETUP BEFORE RECORDING IS CRAZY. I USE MAGIX SEQUOIA 15. IT HAS JUST AS GOOD A QUALITY AS PRO TOOLS AND WORKFLOW IS WAY FASTER. AN ENGINEER CAN WORK ON ANY DAW AND JUST USE HIS/HER FAVORITE PLUGINS TO MIX AND SHOULD GET THE SAME RESULT NO MATTER THE DAW.
I had been away from PT for a few years. My last version was 8.04. (something like that. LOL) I was struggling to remember what I had done to create a new track to make and hear a sound . I didn't want to waste the time that I did when I first used PT. 8 on my old mac. It was like a few days to a week and very frustrating! I am not new to midi. I use Garage band and the old Studio Vision Pro and Finale. I could usually figure things out within a reasonable time, so |I was not looking forward to trying to figure this one out. You've saved me some valuable time and some sanity! Thanks!
You're welcome. And yes, my story is similar to yours. PT8 was the last version I used back in 2009 until this video was made. Truth be told, I made these videos for myself...if I am forced to venture back into Pro Tools land they are the must know info!
I think if you made a version of this but covering all the functions you spoke about with the shortcuts for the actions you covered instead, This would have been exactly what I was looking for
EXACTLY...I USE MAGIX SEQUOIA 15 AND ITS ALMOST A $3,000 PROGRAM BUT NOT AS NEAR AS COMPLICATED AS PRO TOOLS. JUST THE SET UP TO RECORD ON PT IS EXHAUSTING .
Oh man, the cynicism was absolutely understandable. Couldn't stop laughing because I totally got where you are coming from. Got into a situation where I had to use Pro Tools and found that it irritated me at every single step of the way. Never use the word ":intuitive" in the same sentence as "Pro Tools". And don't expect it to make any kind of logical sense. I think Avid thought carefully about what would be sensible, and did the exact opposite instead. Like, nobody but Avid would design that way. Thanks for the great vid
Because you don't use Pro Tools or haven't in a while. If you did a Reaper tutorial I would watch it hands down because you are beyond knowledgeable than me and you have mastery when it comes to it. Although you are using it again and getting over its stupid little quirks I still wouldn't have marked you down as to doing a tutorial on it. Also, this is pro tools first which has its own little changes (and infuriates me moreso).
OK, gotcha. I'm trying to mix things up a little bit. Someone said I am not a real engineer because I don't use Pro Tools. So...I guess I am a certified Pro now!
It's a good bit of kit to know about so you don't get caught with your pants down. I've grown to like using it... but doesn't mean I like the company :P Reaper is my next conquest though. I use it for Ambisonics and nothing else and it feels like a shame as it's so powerful.
I’ve tapped in the top right corner for the Quick Start Guide’ you offer added my email address in the box but still haven’t received the guide in my mail box
Ahh, good question. My microphone input had to be routed using special software called Voicemeeter. Otherwise a screen capture would be impossible. Normally, the inputs would be labeled something like Input 1 or Input 2, Left, Right or maybe Analog 1 and Analog 2, etc.
So if you deleted a track by accident, you cant get it back? WTF!? Im using Sonar and you can backtrack everything, too bad they are not developing it anymore, I dont wanna use this crap.
Also the whole mono-stereo thing, in Sonar you can choose it in the ProChannel and even in the Master Buss, Here you must do a lot of nerdy complicated things, and the Cubase channel strip makes me cry, I want useful tool but also some decent looks. How you check your stereo mixes in Mono on Protools?
Presonus Studio one bro!!! you'll like that and the pro is cheap right now like half off. I just use pro tools when I go into the studio. At home it's all studio one these days.
Hi, I watched this video but I still cant seem to work my pro tools. I have a scarlett solo 2 nd gen and mac computer along with my microphone. My issue is that my microphone is picking up sound as far as i can tell because the light lights up around my microphone light on my scarlett solo. But when I go to hit record, the mic still picks up sound but does not actually record any sound, it is just a flat line. The 48 V is pushed in, gain is all the way up and playback engine is set on scarlett solo and record. The cord can't be broken because the mic light on my scarlett shows me that it is picking up the sound but on pro tools when I'm recording it only shows a flat line on the red bar. Do you have any other advice? Thanks!
Mally I had this too, until I realized you have to "arm the track" (small red button on the track box left, AND Enable the track Large Red button top right, then click Play (right arrow) or press the space bar. Press Return key to go back to start. To Play back be sure to disable (unclick) the I, Input track monitor. good luck.
NeilES335 Hey thanks for replying. Thats how I did it I clicked the record on the left and the record on top next to the play. It used to work and record just fine, now it no longer records. Shows me mic is pickin up sound and the gain bar lights up on my scarlett solo. Red bar goes but line is flat for recording.
@@mallyokruashvili178 you could check your Input/Output selection, to be sure you have the right signal path ie guitar or mic (on a Solo is mic on 1, guitar on 2, and then output 1-2)
NeilES335 Yes I have it on Input 1 output 1-2 How I always had it. Dont know why my comments and naming a project also the backround is now black and I cant see the letter im typing. Used to be grey and I could see what I was typing. Not sure but this happened together and now I cant do anything really.
@@mallyokruashvili178 sorry this is beyond me... im having "time out" issues... my computer is fairly new win10 but it seems the PT is taxing its' capability. I've spent untolled hours with Avid tech support and in the end had to delete and download a new copy of PT . You might have to do that too. Good Luck
right off the top, the tone of your voice and manner of speaking quickly becomes grating. If you want convey information to people more effectively, try a more neutral and natural delivery. Or wait until you're in a better mood. Over 20 minutes of that annoying voice would definitely be too much, I'm out at 0:45
