Great podcast and as you say, I’m currently listening to the podcast whilst painting Ushoran to throw myself in at the deep end and try different techniques to what I’m used too 👍
I listen to you lovely blokes while I assemble (convert models, greenstuff repaairs, mold line removal, gluing). When painting, music with minimal lyrics. Same as the other bloke, I can't process words and colors simultaneously. They compete for the few brain folks I've got.
Totally agree on painting out of your comfort zone to help improve. Painting Kill Teams has definitely allowed me to move away from just painting the same standard units over and over, and I've started seeing major gains from doing it.
I find I hobby best if I listen people talk about warhammer and especially if they are talking about painting. It keeps me in the zone and sometimes even inspires me more. Paint Perspective is seriously my favorite thing to listen to.
When you asked us to comment, I was in the middle of one of the last edge highlighting steps for one of my Ultramarine Terminators. I usually listen to podcasts when painting :) I'm quite a new painter, as well. I got started with the hobby this year in January.
I'm painting Black Templars Jump Pack Intercessors that I converted from Indomitus Assault Intercessors and First Born Jump packs, they're on Mars red cork basing, one Sergeant has a power axe and pyre pistol while the other is two hand wielding a power sword.
Painting now while listening to you guys. I find I take on your advice if I’m painting at the same time as listening to you all. Makes me focus and slow down a bit. Currently painting an aberrant ghoul king for my Terrorgheist.
Listening while painting right now. Workshopping a base recipe for my Raven Guard army. Love the pod boys, keep up the great work, always the highlight of my week.
Excellent podcast, I've consumed all of them in the last 10 days!! All while working as a dental technician making dentures. It's given me more inspiration and planning insight to different projects. Keep it going 🔥
Totally agree with painting a variety of different things. Improves the your abilities on other surfaces/cloth/etc and stops you getting bored. Black base rims for the win.
Ok, so. Black base rims for general purpose and cus it looks better. But sld for gaming pieces Right the meat. January - Aeldaruary February - Drukaruary March - on/for Macragge April - Ahriman April (t-sons or tzeetch) May - may'triarch (female leader units) June - jun'ith Eruita (anything sororitas) July - Nurgly August - Khorngust (8th month so you know) September - T'au Sept'ember (you guys said it. Its too good to not include) October - Orktober (obviously) November - Nidvember (cant take credit for this one) December - Dark Angel December or maybe. Angles of Deathcember
Whenever I listen to this podcast, I'm painting. Currently on a squad of Blood Angels Intercessors. I've taken your advice and will be going outside my comfort zone soon starting Tyranids and using contrast paints for the first time. No idea on colour schemes any clues on where to start with this is appreciated. Keep up the great work as always 👍
So I was listening to this amazing podcast earlier today on spotify as allways and since you lovely lads asked what we get up to I thought I might share I paint like many of you while listening however I do it a little differently since I was working Bit even more so differently than that I was paint a iron roof it was very hot today up there Also hello from New Zealand Keep up the great work guys 👍
57:43 another great episode, thanks guys. Recent found this podcast and have been smashing through previous episodes. - I listen to the podcast and other audio while painting, can’t watch films or visuals. Currently painting 2 Votann Hekatons as part of a larger Votann army commission. My question would be: How do you prepare for larger vehicles/models and what is your process, why is it different from smaller models. Any tips for larger models? Thanks! 🙏 ❤
I love this podcast. It's helped me gain more confidence to just paint more instead of thinking about painting or watching tutorials and doing nothing with the information. Recently, I've been trying to challenge myself more in between what I normally paint. I typically paint space marines. Currently, I'm painting a screamer-killer in the black and yellow scheme of hive fleet jormungandr and trying to use a big brush as much as I can, even with the smaller details. I'm getting better at controlling the brush and the paint consistency with this side challenge. I'm very impressed with myself so far.
listening to you chaps just makes me want to paint. I was feeling a bit unmotivated today, 15 mins in and I've got that itch, grabbing the brushes and gonna get these jet bikes finished. Keep up the good work. Currently painting my Alpha Legion Heresy bikes while listening. My question for a future episode is this. So I have an Alpha Legion heresy army, in a lovely metallic blue. I have Alpharius that im going to paint soon, and i really want to go all out on him. How would I go all out on his armour, could I volumetrically highlight his armour with metallics and then slap the contrast over the top? Would love your thoughts on what you would do in my situation.
Listening and painting a vamp lord on zombie dragon. Always have a podcast or audiobook on while painting. Question: how do you know when you have enough contrast (light and dark) on your mini?
Love these podcasts, always find myself looking forward to the next one. I've not really had much of a hobby urge in the last lot of months, so i try to set aside the length of these episodes to at least do something hobby related while listening to you guys. The release of 10th seemed to really kill a lot of my hobby interest, as i was so hyped about a new edition to start getting back into the game again, but i was left disappointed with the direction the game went. While listening to some of your episodes and finding some other content on youtube I realised this is my hobby, and I can go back in time to when I loved the game the most "2nd edition" and I can paint my newer models that way and try and build some squads the way they were back then for enjoyment more than anything! So thank you guys for helping provide me with an excuse to get back into things. I can also not recommend Siege enough, a couple of years ago I had 2 small Space Wolf commissions done. Great work, and if you get something painted by the guys it will sit and look amazing on your shelf! I wonder will you guys be up for a special Christmas episode ? perhaps a little on the longer side?! perhaps talking new year plans or a review of the year or something?! Thank you
Totally agree with James, cannot paint/sculpt with a movie on in the background, I'll end up just sitting there watching the film I'm just building Necrons at the moment Will have to disagree with GS as an adhesive, once cured it can be popped off fairly easily, Magic Sculpt or Milliput would act more like an "adhesive" in the long term
Hey guys love the podcasts - what are your favourite purple paints? Really fancying a purple knights army but would love to know your favourite purples and why so I can have a good product to cover all that space!!
I'm listening to this while I paint my Sternguard Veterans in my 30k Emperor's Children Scheme. One question for you all is how to progress on to varying how brush strokes are used to simulate various textures?
Great pod lads. Painting Votann as I listen along. I have similar issue where I dont really like fantasy minis, so in an effort to improve I will switch it up and give ione a go! question fo next week ; "I have been painting for a number if years mainly (well 99%) army painting, what in your view are the top 3 things to level up your painting ability when faced with lots of models i.e. Troop choices or lots of infantry etc."
When are you making the 40k calendar ?? With those quirky phrases would be pretty cool!! I am pretty certain that they would sell well with James choice of artwork!! I quite fancy a “Blood Angels” Calander 😂😂😂 Ps:Base rims should be “BLACK” 😜
Why do we still use so much grass/natural rocks on 40k minis? I get that it isn't goblin green meadows anymore but show me some 40k artwork battles that don't take place in ruined urban areas/ships. Always looked funny to me how the gameboard will be a urban area but all the models bases during the game have been standing in my nans garden
You are so right. I have never done 40k minis on grass because I never imagined them on grass. Options in my mind were always rubble, industrial/ship, desert, martian red earth, or some black or very dark chaos infused landscape.
Currently listening you you lads while putting the finishing touches on The Ancestors Wrath. The final model to round out my painting the entire Leagues of Votann range (huge as it is). Could have used the tips about edge highlighting when I was painting the first model rather than the last! Now I just have to finish it off with a nice black base rim. Cheers team!
Thanks for the great content, guys! Really enjoying the podcast. Currently listening to you whilst painting up a Dwarf team for Blood Bowl. Any of you play? Have you had many commissions for BB teams in the past? I'm trying to push myself by painting as broadly as possible, trying small batches of different types of models to find out what I enjoy the most (so far greenskins have definitely been the most fun!) and gearing myself up to have a crack at my first 75mm scale model that's been in the cupboard for months now!
I can listen to Audiobooks or podcast. But I cannot ever having anything with images on either. I'll just keep watching whatever on and end up hardly getting paint on the minis 😅
I usually listen to a Warhammer/painting podcast or a stream while painting. Paint Perspective, Painting Phase and Adeptus Ridiculous are my go to. While listening to this episode I'm painting a Flashpoint Batman. BTW. if you want to see how many ways there are to paint black, check Knight Models' Batmen. Each one is different!
oook. picking up the February-challenge, i have no great idea, but at least more for the bottom of the barrel^^: "FebruWaaargh"? (works OK-ish, but there is orktober already, so ... meh) "FeBloodAngly"? (wellll i know, i know ... but at least i could see one of you getting behind this one despite it being quite bad :D ) otherwise "FebruAeldary" (oof that one hurts...) "Feb-Ynnari" works somewhat imo, but is a bit niche... out for now, working on a business plan for a month-pun-consultancy. 🙃😆
Painting a flash git while listening. What are your thoughts on sub assemblies for personal hobby models when you know there’s parts you’ll never see? Currently need quadruple jointed fingers to reach some of the places on this model
i am building a city in cities skylines while listening 😅 ive actually been slacking and ive missed a couple of weeks because ive been working and just not at the pc so im catching up. im usually painting or playing a non story based computer game.
Listening while batch painting 6 deffkoptas 🚁 Edit: WH Underworlds is amazing for bitesize projects that get you to try new things and push you out of your comfort zone. I did a whole load of experimenting with contrast paints and glazes that I would never do with my main 40k armies because it wouldn't match what I'd already done.
3 months ago I would have died on the hill of black base rims, but now I’m absolutely sold on steel legion drab for certain models. I started painting a GSC army in a desert theme and the black base rims seemed to cut the model off too harshly. The steel legion rims just make the bases flow better and tie them off. So I’m completely team George with this one, sorry it took me so long to leave my black rim cave 🏝️ Adrift_in_the_warp
speaking of Age of Sigmar.. I know 40k is everyones favourite, but would you consider doing an AOS episode?? even take a few stormcasts and do your takes on it? just for fun :) thanks guy!
PS, I say this in response to painting new models or a new thing and feeling like a beginner again. I spent the last 5 months working on Dark Angels and before I went out and bought a new box set my wife shoved my new on spru AOS Dominion box in my face... I have to say.. I love the models, they are amazing, stormcast have some really small tricky details that make it very different from a space marine, and those Praetors with all their robes is absolutely insane! I feel like I learned nothing from my marines hah thanks lads!
Using some of the options put forward by the community, how about these month names for your calendar? Janstealer Cults / Leagues of Vojann (Gene Cults / L of V) Febius Bile (Emp Children/Chaos SM) March for Macragge (Blueberries) Saint Apribella (Order of the Sacred Rose) Adeptus Maychanicus (Ad Mech) Catachan Junegle Fighters (Imp Guard) House Ju'lly (Chaos Knights) Maugust Ra (Eldar) T'au S'eptember (T'au) Orktober (Orks) Nidvember (Nids) The Sanguinala (Any from the Imperium of Man) Edit: credit to those who came up with some of the amazing names listed above!
ps I m team Steel legion drab... I have two picture frames on my counter... one is in black frame,. the other is in tan wood.. so.. not all frames are black lads!!!
