As federal safety investigators probe the Metrolink train crash that killed 25 in Chatsworth, a key question is whether the engineer obeyed track side warning signals. The engineer, who was killed in the crash, ran a red signal before slamming into a Union Pacific freight train on a single line of shared track, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB probe is ongoing into the worst train accident in modern California history.

You're forgetting that the UP train has a lot more mass and therefore a lot more momentum than the Metrolink train. Basic physics says that the inelastic collision between the two trains would be most devastating for the much lighter passenger train.

Both trains were going pretty fast. The UP train engaged emergency brakes, but it was too little too late. The combined velocity at impact was around 80-90 MPH. And despite the braking, the UP train was far more massive and therefore inflicted a significantly greater change in momentum to the passenger train. The collision may not have been premeditated. The operator of the Metrolink train was distracted by his phone. The same thing happened more recently on the Boston T Green Line.

The freight had a green light and the right of way. Traveling at the posted speed! The metrolink was out of control of the operator! Damn cell phone!

False. The MBTA green line collision was caused by an undiagnosed case of sleep apnea. The operator who was killed was found innocent after the NTSB checked her phone records.

Nice presentation, LATimes But sometimes we cannot understand what you are saying. Too bad thathe CLOSED switch Robert Sanchez ran through did not derail some wheels. Perhaps that would have brought his attention back from little boys TO DOING HIS JOB!

STUPID the cab car on 0:33 has the one-windowed cab car. and then the cab car in 0:49 has the 2 windowed cab car car. and then when metrolink enters the curve its back to the one windowed cab car

I don’t know why Metrolink thought it was ok to have only one window for most of their cab cars, but I must agree with Pompadour123 that this is a very stupid decision. Shouldn’t the driver have more visibility instead of looking through the peephole?

1:33 42mph!? LOL Not even CLOSE try more like 142! Look at the that damage. You cant POSSIBLY tell me that was 42. If that was 42 then 1 car would have knocked off the track, not accordion slammed 3 cars deep. Get a brain.

How about YOU get a brain. Both train were moving for a combined speed of 85 miles an hour. The union Pacific train was going 43 miles per hour before they applied the emergency brake the Metrolink train was going 42 miles per hour. Not to mention the Metrolink locomotive weighs 260,000 pounds plus the UP units weighed 408,000 pounds each. So in total the locomotives in this wreck equalled 1,076,000 pounds. So in simple terms derailment like this can happen at 42 and 43 miles per hour
