Just when I thought the rebuild was coming to an end I find another problem. Not what I had planned.

Try to fit a pair of Samrat rockers. Being lighter they have usually a smaller diameter section that interfaces with the push rod tips. This prevents the damage from where it rides on the neck of the rod tip instead of sitting inside it and pushing it down from the bottom of the concave section in the rod tip. That’s why you have an eye shape in the rod tip is because the rod hasn’t been spinning to create an even pattern.

It very difficult to film and do the work on the engine so you can see what IAM doing. Also I find if the films become to long if I go into detail people complain about it being to long a video

This is very interesting, thank you for sharing your knowledge I really do appreciate it! One thing to bear in mind about ordering rockers from Hitchcocks, as well as having the Indian ones as you state at a higher price, I'm pretty sure they also sell higher quality UK made ones.

I think the better quality are only available for the earlier Bullets at the moment but worth pointing out for anyone looking for some.

Good detective work there . I doubt that the oil was ever changed before you had it . I believe that RE fill them with a break in oil when the bikes leave the factory . This has to be drained after a relatively short mileage or the engine will start to wear prematurely. Samrat used to make uprated rockers for the old Bullet engines , I'm not sure what's available for these 500 engines . That might be an option if your new Indian rockers aren't any better . It might pay to have a good look at the oil pump intermals if you are working down there sometime in the future . Anyway good work mate and I hope you get lots of trouble free miles on the old girl this summer ☀️ 😊.

Hats off to Royal Enfield for resurrecting the Classic motorcycle market. I really love the classic designs but l do wonder about build quality and longevity at those prices and it's for that reason l prefer Japanese bikes. Great video.

It could be the valve lifters, they are well known for the internal spring inside the hydraulic lifters collapsing. To replace them requires a fair bit of stripping down to get at them. Or is it just the auto decompressor?. If the ticking goes away at higher rpm than tickover it could just be that. It's quite disconcerting until you kow what it is. I'd recommend "Monu Sagars' Royal Enfield Tips and Tricks" youtube channel. It is in Hindi but easy enough to follow.

The videos are a week or two behind. I had already checked the auto decompressor which was fine. I checked that the hydraulic tappets were holding the oil pressure and they were good. I have already fitted new push rods and rocker arms. This is on another video that will be out in the next few days. The quality of the new rocker arms is terrible. I have had to mix and match the new rocker arms with old bearing blocks as the new ones had an unbelievable amount of free play in them. I am pleased to say that the bike is running very nicely now.

Intrigued by your attention to detail, Ian. I have adjusted my tappets 3 times with 7464 miles on my Himalayan, and I will be brutally honest, I can not tell if adjustment has made any difference. I wear ear plugs always when riding to muffle the noise of the engine and wind. I do agree changing the oil every 3 thousand Miles is probably the single best maintenance item anyone can do on their bike. I'm looking forward to the update on this one. Someone implied how much it would cost to have this type of job done, and I would have to believe IF YOU WERE FORTUNATE enough to find a competent mechanic, this could possibly cost 2 or 3 thousand knowing these robbers in the service centers. Probably be cheaper to ship the engine to Ian, Simon and have him do the work!

Have a look on my video on my Himalayan valve problem. The end of the exhaust valve wears away ( wears a dish in top of the valve) even after setting the valves it will still rattle. I replaced the valves with ones from Hitchcock's in UK.

So if an average person like me who would take the bike to a dealer, what would be the cost of this work and would the mechanic actually have the time to work out what the bixe problems are?
