Every state has it's pros and cons. 99% of employers and employees in Indiana do not even know about the lack of a break law for adults, so it really isn't a thing most people deal with. My city (Fort Wayne) has the lowest cost of living in the USA. Pretty good here.

I used to work at a factory. I can guarantee that the lazy whiny pieces of shit that got these guys fired don't actually do anything at their job, and that productivity dropped over 50% afterwards.

There is a guy at the factory, who checks all the workmanship before the cars leave. Why does it matter if the workers get high or buzzed? They can clearly still do their job even though they smoke or drink. It's not like being a surgeon. These guys screw on bolts, and place parts for a living. LEAVE THEM ALONE. It's none of anyone's business what they choose to do on their lunch break, so long as it does not endanger anyone, or cause the business to lose money. I am tired of the laws in this country, demonizing hard working Americans whom do not accept the social norms that are thrust upon them, with no free choice in the matter. This is a narrative that is false and annoying. Go work for 6 months on a Chrysler production line, stone cold sober, and see how you feel at the end of each day. You will either quit, or try to find something that makes the job more bearable.
Because it adds on more work (and money) to fix the mistakes. Ann's its not a low wage job. Besides the excellent pay is the great benefits, plenty holidays and vacation time. And it's dangerous. In the plant where I work there have been at least 3 accidents in the last 2 months. Thankfully no one was hurt. Not time may not be so lucky.
Drug screening doesn't indicate if a person is under the influence. Just if it is in their system. Marijuana, for example, will show up on a drug screen if a person used it days or even sometimes weeks before. Drug screening is not an a reliable test of whether someone is under the influence at the time of testing.

I've been in many situations like this at many at many Union companies & Gov. facilities. This is why I'm not in the fool ass situations any longer. Don't mind smoking or drinking but these guys are intoxicated/stoned presumably on their shifts at a car factory that involves operating heavy machinery/welding equipment/lifts...I get the downvotes because it's life...but...getting drunk/high + machinery operation....? That's not even counting the guy who got some booze at that place (drank it) and drove around more before driving back an hour later for more drinking.

Thankfully in my bread and butter job there's no union to protect these worthless idiots. In my own small business, I drug test before hiring. Funny thing is, I never put that there's drug testing when I put up a help wanted ad...and when I tell them to jump in the truck so I can drive them to the lab for a piss test, the stoners all have one of the same two responses: 1) "I gotta take care of something real quick, can I meet you back here in a couple of hours & then go ?" Or 2) (this is their reaction most of the time) "Aww, man, forget it. Your ad don't say anything about a pee test". You idiots think America will be successful when you stoners aren't there half the time & do shoddy work when you are there. Then you go on to tell everyone how you were performing quality work & the boss was a dick...& how he/she just fired you for taking a much needed "mental health day". Smh. Btw...it's not like I've never "opened my mind" before. I did it for a while in highschool. I quit when it was time to man up & be responsible. Then there are all the assholes I went to school with who are still worthless stoners. They're all either on the government tit or working the same types of jobs we had in school...except they're 25 years older.

You really need to take into account the era to appreciate this story. Here in Michigan at that time (and elsewhere of course) people were turning in their house keys to foreclosure, losing their cars to repo, and basically experiencing one of the worst economic crises ever. Then they see Chrysler get the govt bailout, and then this story comes out. It just angered lots of people. Definitely a time capsule.
The bail out wasnt because of the factory workers but because of the executives that mismanaged the companies and the unions that caused it impossible to manage.
Sad that these workers put themselves and their coworkers at risk, and even more sad that the Chrysler executive was concerned about reputations but never mentioned the safety risks.

Every factory is like this. At my work it goes from the Plant Manager to the floor leads to the box stackers. Everyones either drinking or smoking weed. We employ 440 people and havent had a lost time injury since 2011.

I can see the Point made. Previously I had a job working at a Truck Fabrication Shop. Using 10 Ton Overhead Cranes, 440V Mig Welders, Oxy/Acetylene Torches. Basically a Very Dangerous shop. They did fire someone with a drinking problem. Its all about Safety. And doing the job right. Otherwise someone gets hurt or killed using one of their products.
