Kepner Tregoe Problem Analysis. Differential Diagnosis. Problem diagnosis. Problem Solving. Dr Shrinivas Gondhalekar, one of the foremost problem diagnosis and problem solving expert in the world, as asserted by his clients, brings to you a delightful way of problem solving based on deductive logic or backward thinking, so called because one goes backward from result to cause instead of from cause to result. In the nineteen fifties, Kepner and Tregoe, a couple of geniuses, codified it into an elegant technique. This video exposes you to this powerful way of problem solving. This video does not claim to teach or explain the Kepener Tregoe Problem Analysis technique. Enjoy the video and apply this way of thinking in your life for better results. Gratitude is expressed to Dr Sujaya Banerjee for creating this opportunity. The technique unfolded has been improved upon by Dr Gondhalekar into one called Differential Diagnosis or DD. It is very helpful in Management Problem Solving or Managerial Problem Solving.

This video is GOLD STANDARD of free education and wisdom sharing. Many top consultants fail to explain with simplicity and enthusiasm RCA topics.. and that's obviously because of lack of experience. Dr G, I have been a big fan of yours and your work is treasure. I hope people realize the worth. Can't thank you enough.

Sir, this is the first time I have seen such a logical and structured approach to an HR problem. Instead of vaguly throwing around jargons like attrition, turnover and absentism and attaching bookish theory to it, you have given a real way of dealing with the problems hands on! Thank you for doing this. More of this is required in the feild of HR. Looking forward to learning way more from you.

This problem solving technique should be adopted by people not just in the organisation they are working but also in their daily life...... finding answers is the key and this helps us to know, how. Also, Dr.G ,with you as our teacher ,we will never have to shoot out the question "WHY" to our employees :)

This is the actual way of Problem solving Sir. Person who start solving problem with possible causes are actually inefficient problem solvers, lesson learned and will always try to see the other side where problem does not persists. I liked this video a lot and enjoy the humour element the most. The most appropriate way to make us understand this logic. I really enjoyed watching this video😊

Very efficient tool of problem solving. This video got rid of my previous misconception of searching for the problem where the problem exists rather than where it isn't. Kepner and Tregoe have really come up with something so revolutionary yet so simple. Through the comparison of the working and not working events by observation, I realize that the answer to any problem is tapping me on the back while I face the other way. This video has made me look at the problem through a different lens as well as a different perspective. Thank you Dr. G for this enlightening video.

Problem solving is an essential skill in the workplace and personal situations. Mostly we've heard of techniques that teach us how to break a problem down into smaller parts and then go about solving each component separately. Never had I come across a problem solving technique so simple, yet undiscovered. Hats off to this unique way of looking at things that has the potential to un-complicate the most complex task.

Wow! This was super humorous, entertaining and what a lesson we learned along the way!! Who would have thought to actually open our eyes and ask the areas where there's no problems to solve the existing problem? We all rush to conclusions and possible causes. Human nature. Comparing the problem statement with the "non problem statement" therein lies the secret. Amazing!

This kind of problem solving technique is tremendously useful in day to day life. Though unconventional but very practical. When i was working with TCS a similar kind of situation happened in the project I was working in. I was working as a Data Center Operations manager in one of the Data centers where a few servers automatically were going to sleep mode at regular interval of time. With lots of analysis with these servers, we were unable to get a solution. Finally the OEM vendor mentioned a similar kind of technique of problem solving. He asked us to install a server of similar specification in the similar environment and put on test mode. Then after a few days we tried to analyse the logs of the new server and then compared with the defective servers and found out the fault in the SNMP protocol of the defective servers. Thus, by using this technique of analyzing the error free server gave us the solution for the error. Now I can relate this situation very clearly and understand its impact so meticulously. Thanks to Dr. G for his profound experience and we hope to apply it more and more in our practical lives.

Sir, Being just a humble student, I've read and talked to a lot of people to find that understanding a problem outside in reduces the time taken to solve future problems. I can't believe the realization, after spending 16 minutes 21 seconds as compared to 22 years of my life, that possibly those all originate from this simple thought. And this changes the way I'll live my life and lead others in making theirs better henceforth. I'm sold. And I can't be thankful enough to you, your experience and the knowledge that you gained AND SHARED to close the bottle and not let the cockroaches out and make it a near perfect system.

Sir, Over the years, we've been habituated to jumping on to the conclusions prior to understanding what the problem is all about. An effective manager, I believe, is one, who unlike others, analyses the depth of the problem with keen observation and approaches the problem with an open mind, mapping all probable causes. An ineffective manager would directly jump on to conclusions.

This technique takes me to a philosophical level; many a times we sulk over things that we don't and someone else gets it. We keep saying I am better than this person etc I deserve this more but we fail to ask a basic question that what is the one thing that this person has done right and got what you desired for the most. Asking this question solves organizational probles; but if we as individuals ask this to ourselves what is the one thing that this other person has done right and implement the changes within us; I am sure more than half of the world's problems would disappear. I am finding words to express my gratitude for this video, which opened up a different thought for me.

The problem is - You see, You Just DON'T OBSERVE, Every coin has two sides, you just have to observe, Searching for the answer of the problem where it is not, makes life simple. Don't assume the causes of the problem which stops the actual cause to popup. Eager to use this technique. Also a learning is that, Managers should know his workers well. Amazing to learn this from you, Dr. G Sir, and hope for more... Thanks

This video shows how effective problem solvers are different than non effective problem solvers. The research shows that people who don't immediately jump to conclusions but rather study the problem in depth are more effective in problem solving is a very good concept which we all can inculcate in our own day to day problem solving. The steps shown guide in the right way to problem solving and it is important to follow the correct method before jumping to conclusions. Thank you sir will try to follow this approach from now on.

Hello Sir, The issues with these times is that, most people believe that using jargon and all the fancy tools and technologies of the modern world can help them solve problems. Even in the case of most of the traditional colleges today, students are taught words and acronyms and confusing theories, most of which cannot be retained or applied in their real life because of their purely theoretical approach. What is the most intriguing and priceless about your videos is that they break down all the theories, cut out all the jargon and in simple terms tell us how to go, see and solve the problem. The gap between expectations and target is where the problem lies.. and the best way to get to the root cause of it and nip the bad flower at its bud, is very practically and simplistically explained here. I know that immense knowledge and practical application at various established companies and systems has gone behind these conclusions, but delivering it to us in the words we get, deriving the essence of your great work from the past, really makes this and all the previous videos priceless gems in our knowledge hat! Thank you sir for delivering these words, or should i say 'videos' of wisdom. Awaiting your next video. Tanvi Nimbalkar

Sir, surprising to see that an approach to problem solving could be so simple, yet so effective. I have worked in business development for about 3 years, where our organization constantly faced the issue of some teams not achieving targets (whereas other teams over-achieved them), and the management did exactly what everyone else does: jumped to analyzing the causes Had our management used this approach and spoken to the teams doing well, we would have got a solution. This technique could also be effectively used during inter-team meetings to brainstorm and exchange ideas, wherein everyone could learn from each other and be more productive.

Sir, I was working in an e-learning company about an year ago. The company was facing similar problems which have been highlighted in the video: 1) Absenteeism 2) Top level managers leaving. My company started with an idea of arranging monthly activities for employees. These activities were fun, but I guess the company would have done way better had they incorporated the K & T method. They would have also saved a huge amount by following this simple technique. Next time I visit my boss, I would make it a point to ask him to refer to this technique. Thank you for explaining it in a nutshell!

A very traditional method to think. We should use thinking as a process. Kepner Trigoe extracts the information we, and the others know and take next best step in order to approach the problem. I have used this technique in my summer internship wherein I was asked to do attrition analysis and identify the reasons for high attrition among employees with a tenure of 1 to 3 years in the organization. I spoke to the employees who have stayed with the organization for more than 3 years which gave me an insight about the reasons for employee's leaving in the initial years. A very easy but most important technique which we can not only use in our work or office but also try using it in our daily life. This video is a great learning to solve a problem and understanding that we should not jump to cause rather go to the history ans study it in great detail.

Sir, this is a way which i never thought of till date. Brilliant concept to figure out the problem causing areas within 8 questions. Best part is that, we should focus on the non problematic areas rather than wasting time on the problematic areas.

I am participating in a lime case study challenge and was stuck on a problem since a past few days. Me and my teammates were not sure on how to approach the problem. Then suddenly I remembered you saying about a technique called differential diagnosis during Mattel presentation Seminar. After searching for a while I finally found this video. This is a very convenient and simple Method. I am able to simplify my case study with this method. Main thing is that now I know how to approach the problem. People say that six sigma is one of the most widely used problem solving techniques, but I personally feel that no problem solving technique can be as simple as this one. Thank you sir for this amazing video :)

Neha Bhat, appreciated your comment. Thank you. Shall be delighted if you go a bit deeper and master this technique of problem solving by making applucations. Your role model could well be Dr Sujaya Banerjee, who is the head of Talent Management for the whole Essar group. She knows and uses this technique brilliantly.

Thankyou Dr.G, The video shows us that usually the solution to most of our problems lies where the problem arises from, we just need to go to the Gemba and find for ourselves. This also helps in coming up with quick and effective solutions. Therefore it is always essential to be very observant and approachable.

This kind of technique is actually quick to resolve the problems than the PESTEL, SWOT analysis, PORTER's five forces rule...... As I tried to fix the issue of oil oozing out of the moped (2-Wheeler) I use... I practically compared with the same type two wheeler of my friend. The mechanic adviced me to change the valve in order to resolve the overflow of oil, but on trying the technique myself just to find if I could find the problem and get rid of the cost to change the valve. I found that issue by differntiating, was very simple just the cap was not closed properly due to collection of dirt and mud in between the joints...this led to overflow while riding through the potholes and we just need to clean... I saved on the unnecessary spending on the replacement of valve. Thanks a lot to teach this and will apply more even on the smallest issue to check the power of resolving problems

Sir, The technique is very structured and unique! simple yet effective!! Everybody faces problems in their day to day life.. but rather than diagnosing the problem we start looking for possible causes. Indeed the best approach for problem solving. Thank you Sir for sharing. It will help me a lot in my personal as well as professional life!

Unique way of teaching problem solving with a simple example of 'pump'. I can relate my experience in programming languages with this one, while coding for one application I came across certain errors and warnings at respected lines and spent a lot of time in correcting and searching errors in those lines, but after checking the whole program from the starting line I came to know that error wasn't in those respected lines it was in initialization. But with your example I can apply this technique in regular life to know the problem in detail. Thank you Sir!

Sir the What , Where, When, How matrix is fantastic way to get a definitive and clear discripition of the problem and even better and faster way to identify the solution. Studying the problem and identifying the inputs for the matrix makes it easier for us to understand the situation as well as communicate the problem to the customer. Thankyou

Great method to solve the problem sir. It shows we should always first observe carefully and not jump to possible causes and also look for where the problem is not present which will surely leads us to correct solution. Thank you sir for wonderful explanation.

As always, your humourous way of teachings gives best learnings to us. Things to take from this video are 1) You dont need to do great to innovate, just go back in history and you will get the answer. 2) Some ppl are ineffective at problem solving because their observation skills are low and their method of problem solving is not right. 3) Dont try to study the causes of problem firsr, instead observe and find what is not happening? Where is it not happening? When is it not happening ? How much is happening and wht not happening? 4) The answer always lies in the why not section. Sir ,you just simply proved that our conventional way of problem solving is wrong. And im glad that now i have an edge over others who first try to find the cause of the Problems first.

Dear Sir, Thank You for this technique of "Problem Solving by Kepner & Tregoe" I so wished that i knew this technique of problem solving in my summer internship where one of my project was on "attrition data analysis".This technique could have given me more insight to go in right direction to get the answer rather than just highlighting the mere causes of attrition to my mentor. Looking forward to implement this technique of asking "what, where, when, how much--problem exit?" in every problem solving exercise henceforth.

Actually, this technique really works very well. I totally agree with the point that you will not get the solution to a problem if you are going after possible causes. thank you for giving such an important method of problem-solving.

Hello Sir, I never knew there can also be an optimistic way of problem solving. Over the years a problem is usually analysed either by finding what is not working as per process and how can it be fixed. Basically it has been sterotyped in our mind that problem is a negative word, and it requires quick fix for proper functioning of a system. Techniques like root cause analysis(RCA) using top down or bottom up approach usually revolve around the problem statement and ends up spending most of the time in finding and analyising the touchpoint which is not functioning as required. This technique helps us channelize our energy in analysing what is working fine and thus performing a comparative study with respect to the problematic system. The application of this technique is not just limited to machines and systems, but as rightly mentioned can help in analyzing human behaviour and even in self evaluation. Instead of introspecting and trying to find a solution for the problems faced, one can look at the positive points and utilize them to over come the problems. Thank you sir for teaching us the simple yet most effective way of 1 step problem solving.
