I agree that the Joker has lost some of his mystique due to how overexposed he is and how many stories delve deep into his psychology, but I also think a lot of his writing across multiple mediums have forgotten what in large part made him a fun villain. They’ve forgotten “The Clown Prince of Crime” aspect of the character. He uses joy buzzers, exploding pies, poison flowers, laughing gas, BANG flag guns, exploding Jack In The Boxes, ect. He kills people whenever he finds it funny and plays it up with clown theatrics for “style.” His jokes are the type that make you feel like a terrible person for laughing at them. He’s not someone who preaches about order, chaos, and “we live in a society!” He’s not some edgelord who cuts off his own face to wear it as a mask. He’s a clown and criminal mastermind with an unpredictable nature that makes him a wildcard for practically anyone. Yet I feel that all we get nowadays is a bunch of edgy attempts at emulating Heith Ledger in some way, which I find especially annoying because while he did a phenomenal job acting wise, I didn’t feel that he was the actual Joker. He just kinda felt like a terrorist in clown makeup, at least to me anyway. I’d like to see Joker just completely shelved as a character in all media for like 5-10 years, which would make his inevitable return all the more satisfying, but I know that’s never going to happen, so Batman stories like a horror one with Man-Bat or Clayface as the main villain would be cool to see while other stories use the Joker.

@@Bungycb I agree that Joker himself isn’t that deep but what makes him a good villain is his dynamic with Batman. Bruce represents order and justice while Joker is the embodiment of chaos and anarchy. That’s a good dynamic that can lead to a lot of fun interactions.

I agree, the problem isn't that they are exploring his character. It's that they are exploring the LACKING of his character that they have fumbled. Like, take The Killing Joke. That joker actually had motive. It showed that moment to moment, he believes in acting on what you think is fun or on what you want/desire, no exceptions. But he also has a deeper ego where he believes that his methodology is the only true sanity. It's WHY he does the joy buzzers, the laughing gas. The theatrics. . . are fun to him. He IS about "fun". The problem with the modern day take is. . . they aren't exploring him as a character, that "ambition for fun". Like, I get it, his nightmare is a world without fun. . . but becoming the batman??? Really? Now your just playing with fan service by forcing it to be about their dichotomy rather than about the character himself. He RELATES to batman, so I wouldn't exactly say him becoming batman would be his nightmare. If anything, making it about that AVOIDS exploring how he copes in a world without fun. He just. . . gives up. No fight, no struggle, no desperate attempts to make himself laugh, no depression when the smile just won't come out. They rushed to the 9 to 5 job aspect too quickly and had no where to go with it. Jokers Night Terror should have been about him going to war against a no-fun world. . . one where he is constantly losing. . . but doesn't stop trying. Where his sick and twisted smiles are just. . . seen as mundane.

Desperately just needing the novelty factor is already what makes EVERYTHING lame, if you have taste. Without relying on surprising the readers with telenovela twists, a good writer could go into what we DO know about the Clown archetype and use that to make commentary on what that means: but then audiences would just start hating the stories because it takes actual skill to write, like Superman, so they think Superman is a boring character because good stories seek PAST the "problem" of finding a villain to punch and how to punch them. In reality Batman stories are already dealing with the same issue with Batman's infinite prep time glitch, but some "readers" (in loose sense) like that BECAUSE it's part of the power fantasy. And they hate the disempowerment fantasy, of finding actual problems that even Superman can't solve, and then finding the solutions. I like Superman because EVERY good Superman story, is about higher values than 'might makes right', he has no room to BE about 'how' to be mighty. Poison Ivy could be relaunched as the symbol of boundaries and forbidden zones. Because Clowns are the ultimate symbol of trespassing, they're based on raconteur Arlecchino, namesake of Harlequin. And the use of clown paint is honestly pretty hateful AMerican circus tradition of having an acceptable target, a drunk with pale face and rosy cheeks, to just abuse in public. That's the joke, that's the joke that modern audiences really don't GET because they have zero clue of this history of their own culture. Except, they still remember the color swap of a black clown face, and STILL blame it on the make-up and NOT on their OWN crude history. That's also why Asia still has mocking stereotypes like the Mandarin bureaucrats of Bruce Lee movies, which is kinda like a top-hat wearing capitalits or the Western undertaker followed by vultures. Because they can HANDLE it, when they UNDERSTAND it. You can only handle whiteface clown BECAUSE it's flat and flanderized and removed from context.

My problem with modern Joker is, his crimes aren't ironic, constituting a joke. In his first appearance, he killed men who were considered untouchable. The more security they had the easier it was to kill them. The HBO audio drama did a crime where Joker poisoned someone, mailed him the cure. Knowing he wouldn't open the box. The man ran as far away from the thing that would save his life. To Joker, that's funny. That's what I expect from Joker. Except for a few examples. We haven't seen it since the seventies.

The problem with the Joker is that he isn't varied anymore. It's all about killing. I remember when Joker wanted to make a movie "starring" Batman. Would people die? Yeah, probably, but he was really trying to make a movie with every intent on getting it into theaters. That's crazy... that's the Joker. And he just doesn't do it anymore.

The bad thing is that most of Batman's enemies have been reduced to just being mass murderers. The few that are just robbing jewelry stores or whatever, like the Riddler at times, are treated as jokes. It's all mob bosses and serial killers now, just with colorful (sometimes) costumes. I think the only thing that sets Joker apart from most of the other serial killers is with the exception of maybe Bane, Joker is the only one that seeks to purposely make Batman and his friend's lives a living hell. All the other go about their business and have some sort of plan 'in case Batman shows up', but the Joker is directly seeking out Batman on purpose.

You keep saying BTAS only had the acid vat with zero context, but Batman: The Animated Series pretty firmly established that their Joker is former mob driver Jack Napier, he was a cruel man who loved to hurt people and one day decided to try and break off on his own to become his own mob boss, only for his first job on his own at Ace Chemicals to go sideways because of Batman.
@robmarsh918
@robmarsh918 3 месяца назад
I was thinking the same thing. I think the issue is that people don’t really see Mask of the Phantasm as part of the BTAS. It definitely feels separate for some reason. Bruce Wayne didn’t feel like Batman - the idea that he would give up the cowl for a woman is just not him. The movie just doesn’t come off as canon.

The Joker's dependence on Batman to exist and have a purpose is definitely a result of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. It's amazing and interesting how pervasive that take on the character has been, with Scott Snyder's run on Batman, the Lego Batman Movie, and the White Knight universe definitely furthering how integral that aspect of the character is. I only wish both the comics and associated media like the movies would take a break from using the Joker for a while, though I don't see that happening any time soon.

I totally agree the joker is literally called the joker because he’s supposed to be the wildcard. He doesn’t just cause chaos his whole personality is chaotic. My favorite version of joker was written by Grant Morrison because he has this brilliant idea that joker has no true personality his motives change every day to the point that not even joker knows what he’s going to do next he just goes with whatever seems funny at the time. That also explains why some stories he really seems to be determined to kill Batman once and for all and suddenly be like nah let’s keep going.

"You can't call batman sane when he dresses up in a bat costume and runs around beating up on poor people." This is just one of the many reasons why I prefer anarky over batman in terms of DC heroes. Batman fights the poor whereas anarky fights *for* the poor. Hell, one of anarky's allies is literally a homeless man who lost his legs in vietnam and has to wheel himself around on a cart.

"I don't know what it was that bent your life out of shape, but maybe...I've been there too" Such a powerful line. I am glad Alan Moore, despite having already broken his relationship with DC due to the copyright issues of "Watchmen", decided to still complete "The Killing Joke" as a personal favor to Brian Bolland. Anyway, I didn't like how "Three Jokers" made the Joker's origin in that story 100% canon, as it ruins great part of the mystery that surrounds the character, and also revealed that Batman knew his true identity from the beginning
@lucastheprinceofdarkness9344
@lucastheprinceofdarkness9344 11 месяцев назад
I’m not gonna lie. I have a completely different opinion on the Joker. While he is a great foil for Batman, outside of being an unpredictable wildcard, there’s nothing else to the character. This is in part because there’s barely anything to go on about the Joker. Nowadays, we seem to be drowning in details of Joker’s background and character that most people are convinced that it ruins the character as a whole. I however, like backstories and extra detail put into the Joker. As far as I care, the Joker not having a past whatsoever is getting stale. On top of that, Joker is being used obnoxiously too much too often. In truth, current comics barely focus on Batman’s other great that also deserve their time in the spotlight.

He basically told me one day I would understand. Fast-forward I remember getting my first job and I was just multiplying the hours in my head. Thinking about how much that first paycheck was going to be, I was going to buy.. I ripped open that envelope, and just stood there staring at everything they took from my check. I think what you are describing with the Joker is very similar to the problem you encounter when people try to depict Lovecraftian horrors in movies. You just can't make an actual movie version that's as horrifying as my (in the royal sense, not just me personally) imagination can come up with based upon the description. We may each read the same description for Cthulhu, but I guarantee we each have a different idea in our heads of what it looks like based upon that written description. If you explain to much about The Joker, he becomes mundane and the same for every person. He loses the unique aspects that would be part of my mental concept that come from my specific idea of The Joker.

I think some things being part of his personality and predicable are good, so long as they aren’t like what the entire character is based off of. The idea of him trying to prove that “all it takes is one bad day” is great, so long as he doesn’t become the villain who shows up to try to prove that all it takes is one bad day every single comic book. It’s especially good because it doesn’t reveal anything about the Jokers origins or make him less chaotic because it’s so open ended

I really like the Joker as a Villain. I like the one line that Joker says about his backstory, that he prefers it to be multiple choice since it doesnt really matter regarding what he tries to do. I also love that one line from batman which is along the lines, "The Jokers plans only makes sense to himself." Since no one can really know what hes thinking no matter how hard they try. It all really makes the Joker a real good mystery since he could go from something comedically sinister to terrifyingly psychotic and even a good mix of both. The Joker stories that hint at who he is at his core really have been giving him a definite background, which i think they could remedy by throwing a random bit of conflicting information. It is starting to lose that impact of "you dont know whats gonna happen next." Like a clown doing tricks. Its that wild factor that makes the joker scary and the mystery of who he actually is elevates it since i think the premise of "one bad day can turn you into someone like the Joker" is good cause in the end who he was doesnt matter. Knowing all that takes the joker down a peg into what happened with the batman who laughs. We know everything about that character and what he could be capable of hence why the batman who laughs was regarded as a real good villain, but then was over used and written out. The joker on the other hand, we know what hes done but we can never say for certain how far or what he will do next if we dont know what he is thinking to do, but we can guess cause its not like hes gonna pull out a long barrel gun at random that pushes out a flag that says boom, when in reality it was a trigger for a bomb elsewhere. That level of unpredictability thats also goofy has been set aside to keep him sinister and it will just end up being flanderized or over used like the batman who laughs.

He has so many interpretations and portrayals in Media, that it kind of distracts from the fact that he is and always has been just another Batman villain until more recent works. This guy and his comment's how Joker is one dimensional bro . He doesn't realize The Joker motivation is not power, he doesn't want to take over the world, not petty theif.There is a reason why Joker became popular to this day beacuse chaos and nihilism all the way back in 1941 show's how Joker stand's the test of time in term's of motivation's . Where mayority of bad guy's want to take over the world epeacially in Marvel it's kinda refreshing to see Joker once again. I love how Joker burn's on the pile of cash and says this town deserves a better class of criminal He spit's on the face of Dr Doom, Sauron, Palpatine and 99 percent pf villain's of fiction.

The real issue is with someone like the joker, who’s been in comics for a long time, things have to CHANGE. Like the idea of his “mysterious past” had to be explored, even if it’s good or bad, people will complain about it. At some point in comics, you need to either kill a character off or you have to explore them, or you’ll have fans asking for the same shit consistently. Like in the 90s/early 2000s, fans wants more from the joker and now that we are getting more, some fans hate what we got, others like it, and others are indifferent. You aren’t going to always win in comics. You gotta try different ideas, but that’s the beauty of comics, they have a status quo, no matter how much you change or explore a character, you always have the ability to reboot it or retcon it(like it or not). I for one love all the stuff with the joker, from the man who stopped laughing to the 3 jokers to even the new ideas like the Batman who laughed. You have to have these things happen, or else things just get boring. Just look at Carnage right now. He’s like marvels joker, wasn’t used much but now, they are exploring more and more of him, good or bad(it’s been fucking good tho!!) we are getting more

good point... the whole mysticism of the joker is fading away when they push him too often into the stage light... let other villains shine for a bit... or let's have a batman movie where he's not fighting a villain but just petty crimes and helping kids, families or civilians go through rough times... if that's too boring then let the story be about a young lad entering the crime scene only to be stopped by batman and becoming the new robbin... lets see batman's tutoring through the new robin's eye

For me, the big problem with Joker is fucking Joker Immunity. I get that Batman cannot kill him, he has his own issues, but who says anyone else can't? Who says he cannae cause his own death, through arrogance or a mistake or even just bad luck? Just let him die. Once that happens, there are still plenty of stories that can be told about the Late Joker. Joker needs Batman. Batman doesn't need Joker.

Off-Topic: I'd love a 'The Problem with Martian Manhunter.'' He's such a fun character, but I feel like he gets sidelined for everything. Like someone on Parr with the higher tiers of the league and has a pacifism mentality but never fights. Even in movies most of the times he regulated to Watchtower or just one fight. Oh but one thing I've seen throughout the comments is a consensus on how Joker went from Funny random wild card who can and does whatever he wants. To I'm insane in the sense of I'm here just to torment this one guy. If I don't exist this whole relationship crumbles. I want to ruin him in the sense if breaking him mentally. Which can be fine but he leans way into side b then side a. If not messing with Batman then maybe fucking with Other villains. Joker and Mr. Freeze walk into a room sounds like a really funny punch line.

1) Have an origin story for each version of the Joker: The Down on his luck comedian paid to pretend to be the Red Hood, the Pharoah’s servant given immortality via Dionesium, etc. 2) Give evidence that all of them are real: Batman accidentally caused Red Hood’s chemical bath; Hawkman and Hawkgirl had to face off against Joker in some of their earlier incarnations. 3) Have them all meet up, fight, but eventually team up and scheme together. 4) Reveal that the fight was all in the head of the one and only Joker, like in Moon Knight 2016, but don’t retcon any of the evidence from step #2, all versions are still canon. 5) The Story ends with this Joker meeting another Joker, and it’s never explained.
