thank UUUUU!!!! i loved ofra for YEARS so when i got to make my highlighter with them it was genuinely one of those most exciting things i'd done and i'm still SO proud of it, but after all that crap came out i just couldn't keep working with them. i had so many people telling me to keep politics/etc out of makeup and lost a ton of viewers after announcing that i was stopping my collab (even though they still sell it...just without my name on it hahah). there's been times where i maybe thought i was overreacting because of how people reacted to me stopping the collaboration, but i still stand by my opinion! what you said about people having their own opinions/political ideals was said WAY more eloquently than i could ever say it but it's exactly my thoughts. believe whatever you want, but when you're a brand i feel like maybe...maaaaaaybe you should keep those opinions away from your business if you want to try and keep your business neutral 😅
also BRO i knowwwwwww how many of my highlighters sold, how much commission i personally made (which i feel okay with saying...was more than that 5k they so selflessly donated) so when i read that 5k / 50k over 5 years statement it was like a slap in the face to everyone. they absolutely made that (and more) on my highlighter alone, so why wait 5 years to donate that?
Are you not a brand though? I guess that’s my serious and literal brain question. When does an influencer become a brand unto themselves who should, as you said, keep it neutral? I mean anything you guys say with have an impact one way or the other so should it be surprising that some people, who might watch you just for kicks and giggles would be less inclined to watch regardless of the viewpoint?
I actually love when influencers take a stand on "political" matters. I want to know who I'm supporting and spending my money and time on. I don't think influencers should be expected to only ever talk about the "shallow" stuff - they're people just like everyone else, they're allowed their opinions about stuff that affects them as well (and even if it doesn't).
I agree. I prefer to support brands that make it known their stance rather than a brand owner who appears to be neutral but behind the scenes donates to causes I don't support.
The whole "politics isn't relevant" thing infuriates me too, politics impacts everything and the whole Ofra thing just shows how disconnected they are from reality to think like that
As a grandchild of immigrants, the first one was rough. The amount of abuse they have recieved from people like this since moving to England in the 40s 🖤
What is sad is that his family comes from Latin America, so they were immigrants at one point. It's sad when people become bigots after endured bigotry.
This was literal perfection. The discussion about politics and that we here in the UK absolutely are impacted US politics and that it is relevant to EVERYTHING and we all are welcome to choose who we support with our words, actions and cash ❤
As a USian, I deeply apologize for the trash fire over here spreading to other places. It's both embarrassing and terrifying over here right now, and I hate that it's spilling out of our own country.
@miranda1717 I really feel for you, I truly do for women, the LBGTQ+ community, people of colour. It is by no means the only reason we have the shit show we have right now but the Trumpian rhetoric did and does continue to impact us. We never, ever had people picketing outside hospitals against abortion, hurting vulnerable women , already in distress and now we have it all over and that has been directly imported by the American evangelicals who came here specifically for that reason. You have no need to apologise for anything,my thoughts are with you over this next election period and hope things improve, quickly 💜💜
@@nancybudd494if people left because of Trump, that means all the people who disrupted your life by migrating to UK to get away from him. Are left....
My conspiracy theory is that p Louise had the cancelled pallette already in the works and she did what she did in order to get all eyes on her and promote it
Oh that’s EXACTLY what happened. She didn’t have a full plan of doing what she did specifically, but she had always wanted to do that Cancelled collection because she has had “haters” from day DOT.
I love this! I’ve said for years that buying cosmetics, for me, is not a necessity. While I may have to stomach dealing with problematic companies for things that I need, I don’t have to for makeup. I’ve never bought products from Jefree Star, Laura Lee, the Kardashians, or any of the brands mentioned in this video because money is support-period. Thank you for talking about this, I think it’s so important.
Robert, I love absolutely EVERYTHING about this video. I love that you don't hold back and ride the fence in an attempt to please everyone and you instead just say things as they are. Your takes are spot on. Also, your eye makeup looks yummy and I kind of want to eat it. I know that's weird but it's the only way that I can describe it😂❤
“Estate” is the word you’re looking for in reference to Jimi Hendrix’s family. And that estate is well known for being a whole huge litigious mess amongst themselves! The problem I have is I really like Revolution’s products 😕 I can afford them and their foundation actually matches my pasty skin perfectly 😅 I have the Ozzy Osbourne coffin palette and I love it, I’m on a green eyeshadow thing at the moment and it’s got some great shades in it. M.U.A did a little 4 colour neutral palette and I’m kicking myself for not buying two. But yeah the owner is a d1ck and they have too much going on, how many “brands” have they got now?!
That lip blot after you read the P Louise comment was PERFECTIONNN. Love you. Love this kind of video. It is really about current events reportage, they the lense of make up and money. You are doing great work, thank you!
I like it when creators make it known what their political views are. The way I see it is if someone disagrees with me on things that affect human rights, and other important issues, I don’t wanna be their friend/watch them talk. Speak your mind 💜🖤💜🖤💜
This whole video was a breath of fresh air. I love seeing someone who stands by their beliefs and still brings stuff up to remind us years later. Also how about that 999k subscribers!? SO FREAKING CLOSE ROBERT!!! Can't wait to see that gold play button.
I have supported Revolution for a long time, and was getting ready to introduce my granddaughters to the brand - but things have changed, and their novelty "collabs" are taking over from the good quality, suitable for all skin colours and types, vegan, reasonably priced stuff. It just doesn't feel right any more. I think I'll suggest Barry instead. BTW - Revolution's Rock & Roll collection's left overs have been in the "sale" for the last 12/18 months. Your stand on politics makes me all the more inclined to watch you!!!
Wow, it's really unfortunate to see so many people acting in abusive and immature ways online. I assume that the people who do these things lack respect for human life on even the most basic of levels.
Can I ask Robert?? is the line in your brow a scar, or a purposeful removal of hair as an effect??? I love it when you put bright colours in it to compliment your eye make-up.... gorgeous ❤❤❤❤ 😊
I love listening to your views on brands. It always comes from a really informed, professional perspective. I'm not familiar with the backgrounds of any of these brands, so it's so fascinating to hear about 🖤💜
I love your channel. You are so right on. U are awesome and I absolutely agree with u on everything. Thank u so much for your entertaining videos on makeup.
My parents were illegal immigrants and living with the fear of deportation and being separated for most of my childhood was horrible. I am aware that people hate immigrants, especially here in American, but hearing someone say it so openly just sucks. I don't know why he felt the need to say that over a comment.
The funny thing about the OFRA message is that by donating to those charities as their ‘apology’, they are admitting that Trump and his administration were detrimental to those communities
I could’ve understood P.Louise singing along to a drake song if she just had said “I am so sorry, I was in the moment and it just came out as I was singing along, I apologize to those who have been hurt by that” Because that can easily be a mistake, especially in a high energy concert where most likely you’ve been partying a lot or drinking and things just happen. I’ve also almost had slip ups with singing along and you just gotta slam on the brakes REAL fast lol. But no she had to pull the “I have black friends” card instead and blame everyone else but herself.
Re: Orfa - the $2,500 each literally made me lol. And $50k over 5 years? That alone tells me all I need to know about the makeup of who’s at the table. It’s definitely ppl who look like their VP. Also the NAACP? As a Black person, I can tell you that’s nowhere near where I would start. I don’t have anything against the NAACP, but…Orfa choosing them shows they put literally zero thought or research into this. I feel like someone came up with this idea whist sitting on the toilet or something. They would’ve been better off not mentioning the donating at all.
Robert, I always enjoy your content. Down to earth, good advice re: make up and make up brands. Hank was just being a big DB. Certainly didn’t help his brand.
Buying ANYTHING is political. Everyone votes with their money everyday. People need to understand this! Thank you Robert for sharing this in spite of the potential backlash ❤
YES. I would actually go one further and say pretty much everything is political since, you know, we live in a society, and politics is how that society is run, so most things that a culture produces has a cultural context. And that's totally fine and cool!
THIS. this is how you do social media. the welsh twins are probably the most unproblematic influencers in the beauty community. they own up to flubs, embrace being human, and most of all they do right by themselves AND their followers. if they don't support someone or something they will give facts and personal opinions without dragging and making defamatory remarks to stir the pot. love it love it love it! THANK YOU robert for sharing your opinions and allowing us to have our own.
Wayne goss is also unproblematic too. He's said he's too old to get into this beauty drama and chooses not to engage. A kind, nice, informative creator
Steph Toms literally pulled out from her collab with Ofra after they posted that pic. I know it killed her to do it, but I was really proud of her to sticking to her beliefs. Given how strongly people feel about politics, especially with very unpopular politicians, you’d think they would have thought ahead against posting that pic. And that “apology” was eye-roll worthy - that was change from under their sofa cushions.
Robert - I love how you approached that. "Support whoever you want but understand I also get to do so - and you don't get to come to MY SPACE and tell me to stop" - it was just absolutely so beautiful of you how you put it. And I hope my recap didn't misrepresent that but I just love it. It's REALLY difficult to stay stuff like that and sound so sincere and honest.
That's the first I've ever seen of him and honestly as a former drug addict it was really giving me drug-induced vibes... Ick. And if that's not the case... Ick. Super ick either way.
The thing that I liked about Revolution is that they collabed with small influencers, instead of working with the same 7 beauty gurus that got All the collabs. Then they started looking Sketchy to me, IDK why. I wish someone would do a Deep dive into them
I was a big costumer of revolution when I started doing my makeup, their products were cheap and eyecatching What made me decide to not support them anymore was the cancellation of a collection they were supposed to launch with samantha jaell, she was a really sweet lady and probably the biggest supporter of the brand, ever. She sadly passed away believing the collaboration will be realesed but revolution just cut contact with the family afterwards
NOT OFRA??? OMG just hearing about this. Thank you, Robert. Being a truth-teller isn't always the popular way to go but it certainly is the CORRECT way to go. Thanks for sharing all this info with us.
Omg i HATE IT when people say "just stick to makeup! Dont talk about politics" when its not about politics, its about human rights. Period. End of story.
EXACTLY. It's not a silly little conversation we can drop and forget about, it is about people's lives. I will never let it go when a company gets so openly involved in politics that threaten human rights.
@@wendyescalera666 yeah it's just ignorant to say that kind of stuff, politics in America is 100% related to absolutely everything. It's insane to think that people really expect a creator not to care about human rights just because they're a creator and people who watch them might disagree. They really expect people to stop being people and stop caring about things that affect their lives just because some bigot might get upset.
And you’ve also gotta ~love~ when the bigots inevitably crawl out of the woodwork to scream “can we please keep politics out of this”! 🙄 When it comes to the american republicans, we’re not talking about economy and politics, we’re talking about whether some adult, living people on this earth get to live a full life or not.
Thank you! And thank you to Robert for addressing it. Whenever I hear someone say they like to keep politics separate from something we’re discussing, I already know that their argument is going to be incomplete and often invalid. You can’t keep politics out of things-politics directly affects everything we can do and say because it is the embodiment of the values and practices we chose to support in our governmental bodies.
Oh my god!!! Thank you for bringing the OFRA situation to light. That's disturbing. I love your videos. So educational. Also, I am very picky about where I spend my money and don't have time to research everything so these videos are helpful. I'm a nurse and work extremely hard for my money so if I'm going to spend it, I want to spend it with companies that align with my values.
THIIIIIS!! I bought an Ofra palette BECAUSE of Robert (one was finally on sale at sephora) and I haven't even used it yet but it's been too long to take back. I was so excited for it now my heart is broken :( and don't get me started on all the revolution palettes I have just because they know what they're doing with that packaging and I can't resist 😭 I work in the ER so it's a struggle finding makeup that'll last 12hrs that aligns with my values. Robert pleeeease just make a checklist of all the brands from Ulta and Sephora and go down the line 😭 the Merciless Makeup Magistrate is coming for a reckoning 🖤🖤
Not sure why I wasn’t subscribed already but when you are so close you got my tiny amount of help that. Love the teeth bit as they really made me lol and you’re so Dow to earth and polite
When I clicked on this I was not expecting a dodge lipstick hair not ppl telling other to bully and hang themselves on live and the N word being dropped
I really appreciate you making your stance on certain social and political issues clear. I know you're in the UK, but it's a pretty scary time for anyone who is part of a historically marginalized community in the US. A lot of creators do try to keep politics completely out of their content, but sometimes it's just really comforting to see a creator that you like explicitly state that they don't agree with ongoing legislation that harms you. Thank you and congrats on 999K subscribers! I'll be excited to see you reach 1 million!❣
All gay people aren’t bad, it’s just those flamboyant ones and the drag queens that give the good ones a bad name. 🤣😂 In a way it’s good that they say this stuff. You don’t have to weed them out.
Maybe it's because I'm not from the US but what's the big deal with saying the N word if you're just singing along to a lyric? I understand why it's derogatory when dirrected at someone but I don't get it in this context.
@@pankreas2195 there’s a lot of issues in the US with race relations. So people don’t use the N word. Most people don’t. It’s very offensive. If you do, in any context, people think you’re racist.
Love this evolution too! His evil laugh is delightful! Robert knows how to be...classy petty? Is that a thing? Whatever it is, he pulls off being acidly honest without being rude, obnoxious or vindictive...that's a talent!
I appreciate your perspective on this so much, you really do a good job of expressing what and why something may or may not be acceptable. Unexpected story time is always the best time 💜💜🖤🖤
I have to take a small break after that first video. Thank you for the trigger warning. As an immigrant, seeing someone threaten someone with deportation is incredibly upsetting. And obviously everything that he said before that. Christ, what a prick.
@@RobertWelsh I've had people on Twitter threaten me like that and it's heartbreaking. It's even more heartbreaking when it's someone you thought you could trust, someone who calls themselves an ally of marginalized people. I honestly would expect it from the business owner at the end of your video, not from someone who preaches inclusivity.
Im an immigrant too and equally has upset , I had 3 products from them that I got from subscription box and I paused and to throw them in the garbage. I have a thick accent and I get told to go back to my country once in awhile , especially since the pandemic and the beginning of the war. It’s upsetting to hear someone openly say those things online and assume someone could be subject to deportation because of the way they look , stereotypes are so harmful and deportations destroy more than one life. I can’t believe I still see this brand being used by influencers.
Thank you for being the person who puts your money where your mouth is and stands by your morals, showing the “apolitical” people that not being political is a privilege only for those whose identity, freedom, and human rights aren’t threatened simply for being things that white nuclear Christian families comprised of “only” cisgender straight people (as in, forcing their children to disregard their nature if they’re trans or gay) aren’t threatened or repulsed by. What a luxury it must be to never have anyone attack the idea and concept of your personhood, your relationships, your body for not being able enough… this is what integrity looks like and this is an example of everyone showing true colors. I’m proud of your true colors, Robert. What a lovely range of purple empathy. Edit: I ________ a word.
Thanks for this. As a drag queen, I use a lot of makeup, and am often caught up in colors and textures when I buy, rarely researching brands. It's easy enough to avoid certain brands that are shitheads, so I'm glad you've given the background on some of those.
I was a huge supporter of Hank and Henry...and once I seen the exact video you just showed of him telling that person to unalive themselves, I lost all respect for him and never purchased from his brand again!
@@LadyLexMarvel Okay, but what does that have to do with what Vanessa said? While she is problematic, making off topic statements to things like sexual harassment and assault can come off invalidating or victim blaming. I know that was not your intent, but the way social media has turned the "Well they're xyz too" into a weapon to excuse when bad things happen to people who have said or also done bad things to insinuate that they deserved it or it's cancels out what happened to them...we all need to really be aware of the language we use and how we use it. I'm not going to act like I haven't done it in the past, so I just wanted to give you a heads up that places like twitter or ig are making further ways for us to add to r*** culture, I do not think anyone with sense and empathy would want to do that.
@@LadyLexMarvelTwo things can be true at once. I just don't think this is relevant information when we're talking about her being assaulted at a Halloween party??
Revolutions Rock and Roll gives off the Mom in Mean Girls “I’m not a regular Mom, I’m a cool Mom” Hell, I’m old and have seen decades of makeup. Rarely is something truly new and innovative. It does happen but it’s rare.
Hank took money from people for makeup courses that he never gave and then didn’t return the money for months. My friend and I were just two of the people he did this to. We had to fight and dilute the charges to get our money back. I never supported him after that. Then, he pulled this stunt and it just confirmed for me why he gave me the icks.
Thank you for this. It really annoys me when people say "keep politics out of it" because if they took the time to think and look around they'd realise that politics permeates every part of their life whether they like it or not.
Exactly and for a country that loves free speech according to our Bill of Rights, people love to use it when they are saying hateful things but when it’s influencers just being honest about how they feel about current events, it’s all “we don’t want to hear politics from you.”
@@nightgoddess9Let’s be real. The people saying “Keep politics out of it” are almost always right wing and simply want the rest of us to ignore the policies they make/support because they’re indefensible. If those same people are forced to acknowledge or defend those things, they can’t without admitting they’re racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, etc. Most of them really try to downplay that like the rest of us can’t see through them. And the ones claiming they’re not bigots may not think they are, but they have no problem supporting bigots because the ideas and policies don’t affect them. They’re still fully complicit no matter how intricate their mental gymnastics are
Can I just say it's so refreshing to hear someone I deeply admire admonish a politician so many people blindly support? I swear for several years it was like disappointment after disappointment finding out people I'd supported were so small-minded, and it came from some of the most unlikely places at times. Hearing the opposite is like a breath of fresh air for someone living in the buckle of the American Bible Belt!!!!!!! Love you so much Robert (and James, too, even though you're not the same person lol)
I don't do much makeup usually, but there's some sort of a safe space comfort that you bring in any video where i feel inspired to play around even if i don't plan to get out of the house with the experiments on my face. Don't ever change! ❤
I have a friend who used to work for P.Louise as she is from my town. She allegedly treated her employees awfully, pulling their hair, personal hygiene was discusting such as scratching her downstairs area in her pants and wiping it on people because it was 'funny'. using the n word and homophobic, racist comments all the time and apparently used cocaine whilst packing orders up. I've heard so many bad experiences with ex employees.
The bathroom at the “academy” used to be VILE and she used to favour staff members who did what she wanted them to do and belittle others. Especially the ones with outside lives.
I love how firm and effective you are at communicating these points. It's great to see someone talk about these subjects in a way that isn't over the top scandalous and just clearly dissecting the issues. Thank you!
The Hank and Henry guy going off in a video, my first thought was meth, like Crystal Meth. He just reminds me of what drug addiction can look like sometimes. I'm a sober drug addict, so I get it. If he's sober, good. But he's saying some not cool things. 😢
Yup, bad customer service is a huge turn off for me. No company's products are *SSSOOOOOOO* amazing and unique that no other company makes something comparable. It really comes down to cost and customer service when things go wrong. I have given up on some companies as a result of poor/complete absence of customer service despite their low cost, quality products, and quick and free delivery. I have also continue to support some companies as a result of superb customer service despite things going wrong here and there. EDIT: oh dang... Ofra... Major yikes. Guess I ain't repurchasing that highlighter when I'm done.
So true. A year or so ago I had made a purchase of Jeffree Star merch and my package got lost. When I reached out to the company they could see that tracking was nowhere to be found and quickly replaced and sent a new shipment. As a result, I have purchased more of his line.
Same here, I just don't go back to a place where the customer service is bad. I make exceptions when it's obvious that a person is really trying but has not been trained properly, especially if it's a younger person, or if they are understaffed and trying their best. But otherwise - no thank you, I will go somewhere else.
Thanks for talking about this stuff. I get why other RU-vidrs don’t discuss it, but you’re realistic about the importance of a company’s actions and you explain why you do/don’t support a company very plainly. I really appreciate your authenticity ❤
I think the saddest part of this whole video is the fact you had to keep stopping and basically telling people not to come for you for being a human with thoughts and feelings.
I NEVER make comments, but I do want to say that I LOVE how authentic and honest you seem. Your videos are my absolute favorite to watch, because they are educational and entertaining and kind, with the perfect amount of sassiness.
Everytime I see Henry live, it’s at 2-3 in the morning while acting very strange and erratic. They got mad because there’s no way they aren’t on dr**s.
These things are so baffling to me because I’m sure it takes a lot of courage, business savvy, intellectual horsepower, and dedication to start a brand, BUT these owners don’t have the basic good sense to not act like an ass-hat. Such a foolish and unnecessary way to piss away all of your hard work.
hank acted soooo incredibly cruel that i promised myself never to purchase anything from them, and i haven’t. the same goes with miss p. louise. their actions spoke louder than words ever could, and we got to see them for their true selves. i was soooo heartbroken by ofra because they were one of my favorite brands, but i could no longer support them after that situation. i wanted to throw it all away, but after having the amount of products that i paid for, i donated it all to a women’s shelter. people need to remember that the internet is forever and people WILL REMEMBER the horrible things they did.
Thanks so much for sharing this background info. I get so frustrated with influencers who are oblivious to the negative people who have created what products they are praising
Some people should just not be allowed to speak on behalf of their own company. 😖😄 Thank you so much Robert! I've always wondered what the issue was with Hank & Henry. This was great. 🖤🖤👻👻
Super interesting video. I had heard of some of these but hadn’t heard of Ofra’s supporting of our former, now at least twice indicted president. You mentioned how makeup looks have been tied to political instances throughout history and that is super intriguing. I would love to see that as a video…maybe a new series on the twin channel.
