Bin the Hunts and get a local bike shop to build you a nice pair of hand built wheels. 23-25 internal width rims, 32-36 spoke, use 32c tyres. I know several people who have pulled spokes through Hunt rims. Yes, the aftersales is great, because it has to be…..

Leonard nice video once again, thanks. I have had the same problem on the original rear wheel, and replacement on my Kalkhof ebike that I ride here in Spain. Latest wheel is a stronger rim. I do a lot of trail riding, am also on the heavy side! Now coming up for 26000 km on this bike! Also have a pristine Cannondale CAAD5 road bike that I use sometimes, but at 76, with one metal knee I have to be careful on a normal bike. Thanks again. Roger Bourne

Exactly the same problem I had with my Hunts after 4 months without a broken spoke, cracks around two holes. I was within their weight limit and Hunt supplied a replacement rim and covered the cost of using a local wheelbuilder. I switched wheels immediately to DT which are still running straight and true three years later 🤷‍♂️

Nice Vid. I bought some Hunt wheels on special a few years back and they shipped them to Australia - the import duty was a sting in the tail. After a couple of months one of the spokes completly broke. I contacted Hunt and they told me to get the wheel fixed locally and send them the invoice and they would reimburse me. All done, all good, and I have not had any other problems. Love my Hunt wheels.

As for wheels I've been eyeing Cycle Clinic for my new wheels but haven't pushed button because of international shipping and taxes. Kinlin rims with decent hubs in my book is a dependable workhorse. Or, as others say, local wheelbuilder.

had exactly the same issue with a set of hunts... spokes came loose, wheel re-trued and rim started to crack arou d the spokes. Hunt replaced rim and rebuilt wheel without question. Eve. Supplied a new fro t rim so the wheels would match (New rear rim was a different profile/depth). Great customer service, but has to be to make up for questionable product quality.

Here's another problem and solution for you having to do with wheels. Ultimately I had four snapped spokes in nine months on one wheel on the State road bike. All rear, none on the front. Paid for repairs three times, had the fourth break happen last Friday. Had to unlatch my brakes just to be able to ride it back with the wobble. My bike repairman talked about getting a hold of the company in Phoenix and seeing about a replacement wheel and that something was off with it. Apparently some of their wheels were "over-tensioned". So I got the new wheel back today, no added cost, nor for the change over, and it's back on the bike. Happy days.

Really? I’m 286 lbs and have ridden 20 and 24 spoke carbon tubular and clincher wheels for over 2 years with absolutely no issue. I too have had aluminium wheels crack at the nipple. Solution? Custom built wheels using sturdy ( DT Swiss 540 rims) laced with THINNER gauge spikes to allow flex on impacts. No issues since. Road wheels are alloy Campagnolo Zonda’s which have been bulletproof. I am having a set of 50mm deep carbon disc wheels built with a a hybrid of steel and carbon spokes that are ‘guaranteed’ to take my weight, weighing 1250 grams all up. Find a good and experienced wheel builder and simplify your life… I’m a bit disappointed Hunt copped out saying tyre pressure would cause failure, big guys like us can’t run low pressures. If the rim is a light gauge, that would explain the cracking.Not the first person to have failures of their wheels… BTW that Cannondale looks beautiful!

Leonard, do not ride with 60 psi. You are guaranteed a pinch flat/snake bite. Your first 90 degree pot hole will be a disaster. I ride at 100 psi, 64 kilos and got a snake bite on such a event. My friend was ordered to use 60 psi with her fancy new bike and hit a rough railway crossing and both tires punctured. BTW a hot bath is therapeutic after cold ride.
@AndrewisTri-tn1uo
@AndrewisTri-tn1uo 5 месяцев назад
It depends heavily on the width of the tyre you’re using. 100psi on a 32mm tyre is just wrecking your bike’s comfort and efficiency. Just have to find what works best for you. I agree 60 psi is too low on a normal ~26-28mm tyre for a 90-100kg rider. I’d try 80 and see how it feels.
@davidburgess741
@davidburgess741 5 месяцев назад
Thereabouts 100kg and 34mm Vittoria have been a tonic with 60 psi. No snakebiites, but watch out for glass! History of pinch flats every time over 20mm gravel over tarmac 23mm tires at 120 psi!

Hi Leonard, been through all that with wheel. Us larger lads still like to get out there and enjoy the roads or off roads. Myself am a larger than life Beast 6ft 1 and 260lbs I ended up getting a set of wheels made up for me with 32 and 36 spokes, yes the wheel are slightly heavier but the local bike shop are a life time guarantee, yes you do get the odd loose spoke but that gets sorted Asap. AND this is the best part the COST, a Set of wheels for under £400. I have 3 sets of these for the different bikes a own. Manufacturers will always pull the excuse of rider too heavy or pressure too high, if I ran my tyres at 60psi I would be riding on the rims, hope you get if sorted.

Started riding @ 172kg/27st in 2021, 12,000 miles later (-57kg/8.5st) I have broken 14 wheels, obliterated dozens of tyres (sidewall failure) snapped 15 saddles (inc 2 Brooks), destroyed 9 seatposts, bent endless pedals, cranks and chainrings, snapped chains, liquified hub gears and even bent frames, all on “quality” bikes. I now ride wide-range, hub-gear, high-bar, heavy duty Dutch bikes; bombproof, rustproof, weatherproof, daily comfortable for miles without sore wrists-and the straight back lets you breathe fully-anyone with a proper belly suffers on drop bars. I can go (reliably) all day and also surprise the hell out of carbon riders when I’m in attack mode! Heavy riders are not catered for in bikes or clothing; a subject that badly needs a separate video please Leonard; there are solutions!
@maverick6631

I'm 115kg and ride a hand built 631 steel frame (Dave Yates) with OEM Rohloff 36 spoke hub. Original rear wheel snapped spokes regularly due to being wrongly built 3x on narrow, flimsy rims, so I rebuilt the wheels to Rohloff spec 2x French pattern with Sapim race spokes onto ML21double eyelet rims (Spa Cycles) and have had no problems since. Big lads need strong wheels - it's simple physics. There are no magic 28 spoke lightweight rims that will last the distance with a heavy rider. 100kg+ needs a 36 spoke rear in the real world of crap pot holed road surfaces, especially if carrying luggage.

Have you ever considered getting some heavier duty more durable wheels perhaps designed for gravel, or does hunt make a wheel for heavier riders? Getting in my first tire swap out on the State road bike today at least for the first one which is now on the front. I had stock CST tires on and they've been good enough, but now I'm replacing with the Fincci (English) brand for 700x28Cs which I had two of on the Marin in the 35C size. It's been a pretty good and fast tire on that one, so I expect good things from these. I'm not sure exactly of the weight comparison to the CSTs but I'm fairly sure the puncture resistance is better. On the Marin I had the unfortunate experience over the winter of running over a jar of sauce that someone left on this portion of sidewalk by a Walmart. It broke into bits but both tires were OK afterwards. It's really hard to beat that for an endorsement. So I suppose that relates to problems and solutions with tires instead of wheels.

A few years ago I had the stove break down at the same time as having a computer problem happening. Made the mistake of not cutting the power feed to the stove before I started inspecting and unscrewing things. It blew up on me exactly like the navigation or helm stations did sometimes on "Star Trek" with a big blast of smoke! But I was just happy I didn't electrocute myself because it happened when my hands were down there inside. As for bikes, I had two spokes break on me on the same rear wheel for the State in the last six months. The first I figured was from a rut I hit. But the second I couldn't figure out at all. As much as I'm prone to jumping curbs at speed as the need arises, I really do try to avoid that now on the State over the pesky wheels. Different rules for the Marin hybrid. Fact is when the State is down over something like that I really miss it. It's become a big part of what I'm doing on bikes with it being a heavy factor in my athletics and what I expect from them.
@derekjolly3680
@derekjolly3680 5 месяцев назад
Been wet and rainy around here too lately. I'm sick of it! Going out on some bike later. Waiting for it to dry up a little. Now, I only ever see you on streets, so why the gravel bike? My thinking is this for myself. We have dirt trails I occasionally make out there in the warm months. I have the hybrid bike for that with either pure dirt tires or hybrid tires. The rest are streets. I have the road bike with road tires for that optimally. There aren't really gravel paths here. It's just one or the other. So a gravel bike would be pointless for me here. I guess one could rationalize having one over winters if one primarily ditched the proper road bike for it for the assumed more muddy or perhaps more icy, snowy, muddy street conditions. As for me, over winters road biking is normally just out of the picture. Riding anything during that time is like a bonus. This year was different though and it's been a good deal for me.

Bad news always comes in threes, right? God only knows this 'old wives tale' seems true in my life, at least! You're not being tight fisted Leonard. Government / local councils get too much of our money as it stands and in return basic public services get worse, so I am like you in that I am not prepared to pay shed load for parking as one example, along with 20 mph speed limits, which are now shown to create more town centre congestion than ever, especially when bus/taxi lanes have been implemented, so riding in that empty lane is convenient for us cyclists, but a pain in the proverbial for drivers. Hunt are right, 60 psi at this time of year is appropriate. I run all my tyres at around 60 in winter, because the lower pressure is more comfortable and provides better grip in colder weather on more slippery and unpredictable road surfaces.

I've had less than satisfactory experience with Hunt. I bought a nice set and the nipple for one of the rear spokes split open on my first ride. Hunt wanted to replace the wheel, but because of the nature and timing of the failure I wanted a refund. They were not real helpful with my request and I had to push them a bit to make them agree to my request. Also, it seems suspicious to me that they claim your weight and your tire pressure are the culprits. 90psi is quite normal, and for someone who is heavier, 90 is probably appropriate. Your experience with Hunt, even though you seem satisfied with them, just doesn't seem so good to me. They do make a very good and very popular product though, and their prices are great.

Hold up..the issue with the tires were "riders weight" , meaning they're not covered under the manufactures warranty. So if you need to pay out of your pocket to get them" fixed", why do it at all? They're just gonna break again right? Why not buy stronger wheels for your weight ? 🤔 Second , how do you have palm trees in your yard in the beginning of January ?
@jollygoodvelo
@jollygoodvelo 5 месяцев назад
They are covered by warranty! As for the palm tree; it’s there all year! The thing is that palm trees grow pretty well in the UK. It doesn’t get cold enough to cause them any issues.

I’m 1.75 m tall and it’s a 54 cm Cannondale Synapse. Height is a little misleading sometimes, though; two people can be the same height but they can have completely different leg and torso lengths.

It takes an ENGINEER to fix a shower now!? That’s almost as bad as all the throwaway new bike tech. You need some beefier wheels to ride gravel, though I don’t remember a lot of gravel riding when I lived in Britain. Here in America, there are tons of poorly maintained 3” gravel roads all over the place, but honestly the streets in town are so badly surfaced and full of potholes you might as well be riding on gravel. My heart goes out to those riding extra-stiff, extra-spendy, everything carbon machines.

Isn't it time you built your own wheels? No more moaning about what others have created! 36 Spokes, heavy rims, 34mm Vittoria Corsa NEXT tires with 60lbs pressure. Yes it is the weight. Priced the bare rear wheel components with Shimano 105 disk 36 spoke 140mm 12mm through axle disk hubs, or Deore MTB equivalent, DT Swiss spokes, Velocity Cliffhanger offset 2.5mm rims at $200 US approx. That'd build a solid wheel. The Vittorias are expensive, and puncture lots, but seemingly take no casing or tread damage. They really take the impact out of rough roads! Decades ago you did maintenence videos.
