Real talk: That was INCREDIBLY brave of you both to have an open conversation like that (some couples require YEARS of couples' therapy to get to that level of openness and vulnerability!), let alone on the spot, LET ALONE x2 for doing it on a public forum! I feel like this was one of the more real videos we’ve seen. You can tell these are genuinely things that get on each others nerves. And that’s okay. So much of social media makes it seem like these are not part of a healthy relationship and to be avoided at all costs, but these are things that are normal and healthy. Obviously they can get out of hand, but you shouldn’t give up on a relationship because of some friction. And you should talk about them. One thing to suggest, it is okay to do things separately. I like traveling and seeing places with other people, but I also like getting out on my own. It gives you some control over your own itinerary and gives you something to talk about later. This is obviously not as possible everywhere, but a good thing to keep in mind.

...AND also, cultures do in fact have "personality traits" themselves, ie tendencies. Americans Tend to be more open than English people (particularly Southern England) Germans, for example, tend to be planful and punctual. And Italians run later than the specified time. It doesn't mean that every single person is because within the one culture people vary
@Yatagurusu
@Yatagurusu Год назад
I could see an aspect of it being cultural. In our countries if you make plans. Something can ruin it. Like a storm. Like traffic (not American traffics with "rush hours", just jams at complete random times) not to mention any public transport we have is at the whim of God. Then theres things like businesses and restaurants may close randomly and go on holiday? Basically making hard, definitive plans in our countries has often been impossible. So people are much more go with the flow. If someone turns up three hours late, no fuss no muss, just carry on the plans and theyll turn up when they do. And even if you may be an orderly person. How will you function when everyone arounds you turns up hours apart? Youll gradually become used to it and do it yourself. Of course I dont mean to say personality is irrelevant and no western person is like this. Its just the conditions where you are and where we are breeds different people generally.

Hahaha! I'm with German BF - planners have a hard time traveling with non-planning, spontaneous folks. I think compromise is important. When I travel with my non-planning friends, I give them options of things to do, but also only plan one 'big' thing per day. Then there are optional things we can do any time if we are feeling up to it. I think it helps strike a balance between those of us with the FOMO who think you can be lazy at home for free whenever and folks who want to go on vacation to relax AND do things. :)

Greetings from Leipzig :) Being married to a Filipina I can absolutely relate to your struggles since they are nearly the same in our relationship. It kinda has to do something with cultural stereotypes. I like to plan after the motto "Be prepared for everything, but expect nothing", so I am able to help myself in any situation. My wife is way more spontanious and likes to live in the moment rather than in advance. "Five minutes before the time is the german puncuality" while being one hour late is stil concidered the filipino "on time" (You kinda get an idea how many mental outbreaks I had on this :D ) She likes to chill on vacation while I like to explore the places we see. She rather slurps cocktails at the beach while I am snorkeling. But if it comes to food I am with Uyen. Food is a fundamental part of the local culture an the one thing to explore which both can enjoy. Nevertheless, it is these opposites that attracted us int the first place, help our relationship to grow and made us the couple we are today. In fact we started doing things the way the other one usually does, like I have become more spontanious in my planing while appreciates to sometimes think things a bit through in advance and so on. You two guys have the most important thing ehich is your honesty towards each other and the ability to comrpomise. You look so happy in your videos and I hope this is not just an illusion. My wife and I love your content since it ha so many parallels to our relationship and brings us so much laughter. Keep going :)

Depends. I'm Indonesian but I like snorkeling and going on adventures looking for places that aren't crowded. Some of my friends are like me, while others prefer to what we called "pretty-travel". I always arrive 15 minutes before, but I admit that others are often late. Usually those who are used to coming on time are those who are used to working in large companies so that this carries over to everyday life (at least that's what I observe in my social circle).

I feel like their vacations should be split into parts, like a few days for German Boyfriend to pack the itinerary (although let Uyen have a lunch), then a couple of days for Uyen to film (with perhaps preplanned suggestions from GB), and then sprinkle in an all-inclusive or something similar so that Uyen can sleep in get up slowly and they can both eat their preferred foods, and Uyen can have some time to edit (or film not on location), and then repeat for as many days and locations as are practicable.
@Haexxchen
@Haexxchen Год назад
Here is my German families vacation formula: (Protect the secret with your towel, k?) Cleaning and packing - just make sure to come back to a clean house. It will ensure your rested self does not panick when coming home. Clean up, check the fridge and change the sheets. Have a space to unload the suit cases out of the way. Arrival day - just orient yourself and unpack what needs unpacking. The next 3 days are a loop, do as often as wanted: Action day - Do something really cool and fun like camel riding, snorking or hikingh up a mountain. You are supposed to be aching a little tomorrow. Sight Seeing day - today you go to a city or a museum. Expect to walk 10k + km today and have your feet aching. Buy souveniers, take photoes and enjoy one or two restaurants. Relax day - lay at the pool and get drunk the whole day. Action day will wake you up enough. Rest yxour feet today. Feel luxorious and if possible book all inclusive for these days. Departure day - start packing in the evening and make sure the last day was a relax day. Depending on where you were to the onion look, so you won't be freezing at arrival. When home, put your suitcases into a corner and relax Unnpack - the next day and do the washing. Don't have the suit cases stand there for days and remind ou of your vacation with "work". Invite friends for drinks and show them the pictures.

It happens to women in any nationality, whether they are a mixed couple or not, that people talk to the boyfriend or husband mostly when they are traveling together. When you travel by yourself, then you see that people actually talk to you and ask for your opinion. It’s not a bad thing that he likes to prepare everything or that she likes to wake up slowly during vacation. Wake up slowly on some days and go with the program in other days. @yokoakimura
@yokoakimura Год назад
One thing I had to learn is that “here is an efficient way to do everything” is often a bad plan. A good plan includes gauging the abilities of everyone in the party, and planning accordingly. I bet German boyfriend has some backpacking experience, but this is a VERY important thing in backpacking because you must be at the pace of the slowest person, and improper planning will result in accidents or running out of food. Maximizing group utility is my usual goal for plans, and I feel like things one misses out on is always replaced with other things. You might have to sacrifice an hour of sleep to catch an extra event, and end up with a more tired and grouchy partner. Likewise, some events you miss out on make way for comforting moments or relaxation that might make you even happier. FOMO sounds very tough to deal with, but it’s definitely bad for effective plan building.

Uyen is right about the food. Whenever I go to another country, yes I want the cultural experiences and that's top of the list, but part of that is also food because I might get an approximation back home but I know it is not the same. I also have to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well or snack throughout the day if I cannot. What I did do for my quick mornings was pack my own oatmeal and grits as something to fill up on first thing before leaving. On the other hand I have also traveled with people who are late risers and if I am not up and out by 9am I feel like I have wasted half of the day especially when you go to countries where things close early. There is so little time and so much to do, I finally told my late risers "later losers, I'll meet you at x." As for packing that is the tricky part because finding a happy medium is so hard, If I am staying somewhere for an extended period of time I pack versatile clothing that I can mix and match and I pack at least a weeks worth of clothing. I had a friend pack this giant canvas suitcase because she is overprepared and I can appreciate that, but her giant canvas suitcase was so heavy and cumbersome that the wheel fell off and she had to drag it around and it ripped. In being overprepared she was underprepared. For me prepared is one medium sized sturdy suitcase, compression packing cubes, and researching what is essential for me to bring and what can stay behind, having one carry on suit case that is empty for souvenirs, and an anti-theft bag with all of my documents and important things. I am also a planner, I have traveled with people who didn't plan and the result was I feel like we did not do anything aside from walk around, shop, and eat which is fine but there was so much to see and do and we had the time, but not the itinerary so most days we were just floundering. I had to get comfortable with leaving them behind so that I could have the experience I came for, now I create boundaries with traveling with others and I make those boundaries clear so I can have the experiences I plan for while not rushing others. I don't like to pack my day with stuff, but I will plan months and months in advance to have a well balanced day like on this day we will do one or two activities and then chill, window shop, explore, and hunt for food. I get frustrated if I am not achieving experiences.

I agree that it’s a personality thing more than cultural thing. If one doesn’t have the energy-whether to walk or look for places to eat three times in a day-it can be pretty exhausting on a month-long trip. Find ways to energize yourself separately for sometime (for German BF, it could be something that he wants to see that Uyen is not so interested in; and for Uyen, it could be eating at a restaurant that German BF doesn’t want to be at) so that when you are together, you have abundance of good energy and are happy to spend that time together.

Well put. I find a big issue these days is so often people act like those who do/view things differently to them must be “wrong” and they are right or know best as if things are either right or wrong and are not willing to change their point of view. Whilst Uyen and German bf are “complaining” about each other’s habits they are also aware that they each simply have different ways of doing things and priorities (in relation to day to day things) and while it may frustrate them at times it isn’t necessarily right or wrong plus they can also acknowledge how their own idiosyncrasies could be equally frustrating. This is honest, respectful communication where each person genuinely listens to the other. You can see that as the years go on they will likely change to meet in the middle more whilst still hanging onto some of their intrinsic habits - compromise, empathy and respect.

Communication and Compromise are the key :) It's good that you guys are talking about it and both are you are aware of your own shortcomings but knowing is just the first part, acting and actually doing something about it is another :D Also, I also agree with some comments that it's totally ok for you to do your own things separately, that's already a compromise. Being a couple doesn't mean that you have to be like one and the same person. It's totally fine and healthy to do your own thing. Anyways, I know you'll figure out what's best for the two of you. Have fun and safe travels! :D
