It seems to me art is like the parable of "the emperor has no clothes". We know it when we see it, but others want us to not believe our lying eyes.

Ok, before I finish the video.. clearly a banana with blue tape around it; is that now or is that going to be art? Or.. is it not art -right now- because I see it but it is not declared or entered as art? Edit: That pun intended and funny. YT is a big source for me as a newbie to painting and art along with my acrylic classes, but never been happier of finding a channel than I have with this one. Great stuff.

I think you can look at this on a very simple level by observing that the human bladder fills more with urine during REM dream sleep than at any other stage of sleep. Why do I know this? - well, I had been caught in the warfare over the apparent controversy of trans people, e.g. 'bathroom bills' in the US. Biologically, oxytocin ('the love hormone') levels rise during REM dream sleep, while vasopressin ('the anxiety hormone') levels drop during REM dream sleep. I've lately related this to materialism & idealism.

The problem I have with 'conceptual art' is that once you have the concept, you don't need the 'art.' In fact, if someone gives you the concepts, the 'problems' and 'questions' raised by it etc., as you did so wonderfully in this video, I don't ever need to see/perceive/experience/contemplate the work of art itself. To me, a work of art has experienceable sense-qualities. Whether they are more physical as in a sculpture or more mental as in a poem, the qualities are specific, and are arranged into a particular wholeness, an 'organism.' Contemplating that organism of qualities is the "purpose' of the work of art, because is speaks somehow. Whereas conceptual art only has abstract concepts that can be 'thought about.' The work of 'art' itself, as a being, is irrelevant.

I can see where you're coming from. But concepts become more difficult to comprehend when they remain empty. To really parse theory, you have to have a sense of what it is supposed to apply to Imagine if she didn't talk about or show you the urinal at all, or any other examplar of conceptual art, and posed you the questions Duchamp's work raised. Would the video be as comprehendible and interesting as it is now? A concrete and specific example affords us more stable footing to build theory out of off. It provides extra guidance and mental footholds for our intellectual energies, which is useful, even if theoretically speaking we could easily exchange it for another; it is useful, even if we could emancipate from it, and use the things we've learned from it without referencing the urinal ever again Finally, it can sometimes be impossible to understand the implications of a theory, if you don't internalize or work out a number of ways a concept could manifest itself

I love these discussions about “is this art” and the philosophy of art and aesthetics
