I knew a woman who would get a cat, get bored after a couple of years, and have it put down. Then after a bit she would get a cat and it would all repeat. I hated hearing each time she got a cat because I knew what would eventually happen.
I have my 17 year old beagle and she is currently passing. We have her lying in her bed keeping her comfortable. I give her water. Today I carried her outside to at least enjoy the beautiful weather. It has been two days and thought about calling a mobile Euthenasia vet. After seeing the 600.00 for a single injection. We will just let her die peacefully. I have been crying. She won’t let go. She was a very stubborn beagle and we loved her for it. She now is stubborn about passing on. We love her so much.
Veterinarians take a pledge to uphold the welfare of pet parents and their pets but these days it's all about the money. Not long ago there was a fee for euthanize but now vets require a preliminary visit that can add greatly to the expected fee. And, in my opinion it simply extorsion on the part of vets to add that on. I'm dealing with an end of life situation with my doggie companion of the last 12 years and his vet wants to drain my bank account of the last dime.
About the worst thing I ever went through was having to put down my beloved Gigi (poodle). I can't wait until I see her again in Heaven and all the pets I've ever had. :)
I had to put my Yorkshire terrier Harley my sweet sweet baby to sleep August 27, 2020. It was the most heartbreaking horrific day of my life. I still cry every single day I miss him so desperately! And I will be so lost without him until my very last breath and until I meet him in heaven. 🙏🙏❤️❤️

When your pet is ridden with cancer and you have done everything to make their last days as comfortable as possible but you notice now pain setting in, it is time to let go of your faithful friend. It then becomes an issue of you being selfish and holding on or love for your friend. For many of us it is a very hard to decide but love for your pet should always win.
My thoughts exactly. When we allow our pets to be released from pain and sickness, it is a selfless act of true kindness. We feel the emotional pain of saying goodbye so they can be free of their physical pain. I also am always at their side in the final moments so that they're not left with strangers at the end.
@@helpfulnatural Yes me too, I've always stayed to the last moment and their last look at me but I know of people just leaving them with the vet. Bunch of cowards if you ask me.
@counselthyself I agree , I was glad my Dad decided not to go for chemo . There was no cure and that intervention would have meant a painful death. He passed of a massive stroke with only four days in the hospital. Up to that point he lived , had friends over and still enjoyed a beer. LOL

My dog was 10 years old when I had her put to sleep, she had been very poorly for some time, I had thought about when was the right to euthanise, it never seemed to be the right moment, until I noticed that this particular day she wanted me to take her for a short walk and then she spent the rest of the day sitting with various members of the family. I knew she needed to feel close to us. She was saying goodbye. The next morning my beautiful dog looked me in the eye and that look told me she had had enough. We took her to the vets, I wanted to run out of the room I couldn’t face it but I remember her turning her head and willing me to stay. I stayed and held her paw I realised it was about what she needed she needed me to be there for her, then she relaxed and it was over she died with dignity and love. I am crying tears typing this even though it was over 10 years ago I will never forget her. I learnt from this dog and previous dogs that they are intelligent and they know also when it’s time and they may be trying to tell us. X
It's so hard to lose them and worse when you have to see them decline and make that decision. I have had 3 dogs and one cat (each separately) and I still miss them all... I cried reading your post. Only one died without euthanasia. But it isn't any easier... you wonder if there was something you should have noticed, as he wasn't particularly old, but had had a hard life before we rescued/ adopted him. It is funny though for the first few months after each passed, they were definitely still in the house. I'd hear the jingle of of collar inside the house as I came home each day or I'd feel the pat pat my cat would do on my leg asking permission to jump up... he was very polite. The only problem with pets is they don't live long enough. (Long healthy lives.)
Thank you for sharing. Non of mine went so smoothly. You were lucky. Usually the vet tries to make between 1k-10k on the dying loved one just prior to the pets inevitable death. Then last min on the weekend it’s time you and your pet are dumped on whoever is there. Best way to tell if any living creature is finished/at the end with a long term illness is when they stop eating.
One of the hardest decisions for me was euthanizing my babies. When i got my babies i always said i would not let them suffer. Mia and Mya are indelible to me. They were family and blessings in my life. Mia ended up getting cancer and the vet said there was nothing else they can do. Mya had a fungus that spread to her brain giving her seizures the vet said it was time. I gave them the best of me and they definitely gave me the best of them i was not going to let them suffer. Mia was 11 and Mya was 3 months away from her 10th bday when i had to make the hardest decision I've ever had to make. They were and still are the love's of my life. I say all that to say , animals aren't things they are amazing beings with emotions idc what anyone says. In my opinion euthanasia should only be used when it's absolutely necessary period when they are suffering and there is nothing you can do about it. It should be a crime to euthanize an animal because it has become an inconvenience for you!!!

I personally don't feel its my decision to make, nor a vets. In my experience, I knew euthansia would never be an option for me. As much as the vet tried to emotionally push me in that direction, I refused. In the discussion about it, my Max was watching and listening. In the last few days (when it was apparent his time was near) the only time I saw stress from him was when at the vet office. I assured Max he wasn't staying and we went home. Max had an internal rupture and was 14. I brought him home, the vet did "convince" me to give him a shot of morphine, which in hindsight I regret. He was spaced out for 12 hours. When he came out of the morphine, he was alert, responsive and still drinking. He was made comfortable in my room, and I made sure if not me, someone else was there with him . Not once did he show signs of stress. He was peaceful. A day and a half after our vet visit, I noticed a change in Max's breathing. I sat down beside him and talked to him keeping him as comfortable. He kicked his front leg twice, opened and shut his mouth twice and he was gone. It was one of the most peaceful experiences I've ever been in. Had I bowed down to the pressure to euthanize him, I would have missed out this beautiful experience. Of course I grieved my loss, but I never had any of the emotional baggage feelings of doubt and guilt for his death. After this experience, I wonder why passing naturally isn't an option at the vets? Death is inevitable for us all, but there is a huge feeling of peace that comes with allowing nature to take its course and being there to support your loved one. For me there is only one option, and it's not euthanasia. This is not a judgement on others choices, it's just my personal experience.
Thank you for sharing this story. I have yet to hear any vets talk about natural passing. I know you can euthanize your beloved one in home on their comfy bed but… I’m unsure I can make such a final decision. What if your pet wants to hang around as long as possible? They aren’t always in pain. I feel they would want to be around their loved ones as long as possible. I appreciate your story.
@@Ozzzzzzzz I did reach out to my vet a few months after to share my experience with him, his response was "I'm happy for you, you aren't the normal client". Change can/will come from us only.

It is not as good as it sounds. They find somewhere to hide and then die and you cannot find the body until the stench spreads as it starts to rot and decay.
Sounds to me you did the right thing. You took away a period of time where they could have suffered greatly. They are going to die - we can’t escape it. My vet gives a drug that relaxes the pet and then gives the lethal dose of anesthesia. And we have to realize it’s anesthesia many of us who have had surgeries. I wish I could go in that manner - relaxed, sleepy and surrounded by a loving family.
Yes indeed. It's an extremely hard decision and it's getting harder. These days vets don't trust pet parents to decide when the time is right to euthanize their pet. No... Now you can expect to pay not one but two fees in an end of life situation. For starters you have to pay for an "evaluation" that might cost a couple of hundred dollars to insure that it's the right time and then you have the fee for the actual euthanize on top of that. Current law is allowing vets to extort money from pet parents and it needs to stop now. Those decisions need to be left to the pet owner.
Aww I’m sure it is I had to put my big guy down in November right after my birthday and I don’t think I’ll ever recover because he had tumors in his bladder so he was good from the chest up sick from the waist down I am just heartbroken beyond belief

My dog has the bladder cancer TCC. It crawls up the nerves into their spine. She has outlived the survival time with meds and diapers. There are some hard days. When she tells me it's time, then she will be let go into peace. This will be so very hard on me, but fair to her.

I'm a vet. Thank you for covering this. It is most definitely something I struggle with. You never get used to it. The finality of it still gets me and I've been doing this a long time. It's heartbreaking to see a client come in with their pet and leave without her/him. You have to be strong and professional but inside you're dying a little.
As a vet, do you think it is ethical to let a dog pass naturally from kidney failure? I am stuck between him getting euthanized or dying naturally. I don’t think he’s in pain but it’s hard to tell how much he is suffering. What if my little guy still wants to hang out and veg? I feel uncomfortable making this decision for him.
@S Zn I am not a vet. First I would do everything I could to help him/her to heal. I would use watermelon seeds and parsley and corn silk and dandelion root make as a tea and cool down and poured into ice cubes and gave it one to ozonated water to drink. After one week I would give him/her Uva Ursi tincture free of alcohol with water with a pinch of baking soda. UVA Ursi is effective against the full range of urinary tract infections only if the urine is alkaline. To achieve this effect, you should take 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/3cup of water with every dose of herb and avoid consuming acidic agent such as meat, Vit.C and fruit juice. Avoid taking Uva Ursi for longer than a week. The herb may temporarily turn the urine green. This is a harmless effect. Take all kidney and bladder infections seriously. They can cause complications if not treated promptly. Jf symptoms of a urinary tract infection persist for more than 48 hours, you should seek medical attent.
I've always let my pet decide what to do. I'm thankful it's always been very clear what the pet wanted. Sometimes the pet's wishes have caused me financial ruin for several years but their well being has always been the priority.
My last dog was diagnosed with cancer and liver disease he lived another 1.5 years. He went blind and deaf got arthritis had bloody stools it was painful for him to urinate he was having difficulty breathing. I had to love him enough to let him go the vet came to my home and he passed away vet assisted in his own bed😢
All of mine died of natural caused. It is heartbreaking. My chihuahua died in April, I held him till his last breath. My heart is still broken. He was on 3 heart pills. He was 12 years old. I could never live with the guilt of killing one. , that's Just me.
I pray when my little Patches time to cross the rainbow 🌈 bridge comes here just falls asleep. He’s 12 now and I can’t imagine having to ask this question but I also never want to see Him suffer he’s my snuggle buddy and the sweetest dog ever!!!
My sweet girl just fell asleep and quietly left this world. She was home in her favorite place I was with her. It was still hard but her natural passing was peaceful. When his time comes I hope yours is the same.
One of the hardest things I have had to do. My dog was dying of cancer and in immense pain. Still didn't want to do it. I was selfish and wanted more time. It still tears me up years later. I would NEVER euthanize a dog I did not agree with. Sorry, I would not care if I lost a patient.
I agree with that, but had a dog I did euthanaze, My other 2 dogs and cat died at home. The one dog that I had euthanazed had stopped eating and drinking, had heart failure, with a sudden excess of fluid retention where he could not breathe lying down, and was exhausted. It was a horrible choice. I was with him at the last moment.
My Boston Terrier was diagnosed with a brain glioma. The neurologist told me Chipper had about six weeks left; he died in three. I promised myself he would never suffer the cluster seizures of my other Boston, who passed from meningoencephalitis. I waited too long also wanting more time, until he seizured repeatedly until he died in my arms at the vet. Still beat myself up for prolonging his life needlessly because I couldn’t let him go.
@@TheIntlwoman The day before he died, did he enjoy your company? If so, then you allowed him to pass naturally allowing him to have as much time with you as he needed. Relationships are two way. I know not of any human in a nursing home that would not like more last days. One of the dogs I had that died at home, also a difficult thing. was surrounded by the other dogs, and his favorite human, my daughter stopped in for a last visit. This dog that had no energy and could not stand up, became animated with the other dogs and my daughter visiting. No she did not stand up, but wagged her tail and lifted her head. As a nurse, I have witnessed seniors in nursing homes, that moan and are barely conscious near death, but become younger if you wish when family visits, and animated, and then return to a resting / dying state. It is impossible to predict when the last day is, and more impossible to make the decision to euthanize, as pets have good and bad days before they die. The only rule of thumb I know, is when they stop eating, when they stop drinking, even they know the end is near. Death usually occurs in 3 days or less. My condolences on the loss of you friend.
@@TheIntlwoman My Boston Terrier had a brain glioma too, and we fought it with everything we could. I wanted more time. I don't even want to total the thousands I spent at the vet trying to save him, but one day the vet said that she would have to recommend euthanasia. I had to step back and look at him. She was right. I'd kept him alive more for myself than for him. He had lost a lot of weight, had frequent seizures, and seemed disoriented, among other things. Euthanasia was the most humane choice, and I had him put down. He was gone before the vet finished the injection. Since then I have learned that those tumors are common in the breed. I still feel bad about holding on to him for so long, but I kept hoping for a turnaround. Every so often he would seem to rally, and hope dies hard.
I had too. She lived 2 years with treatment, eventually the treatment was not working and she was suffering immensely,, she was adopted, lived 9 years with, she was probably no less than 13 yrs. old. I made the decision to put her down, I called that Chihuahua my fairy, her ashes are in my room next to my husbands. Her box has a porcelain fairy and a porcelain chihuahua that looks like her. Over 20 years ago I had the vet euthanize Bailey, my 5 year old Boxer who was losing her cancer battle. Just last year I finally buried her ashes. All these years and many dogs later, talking about her still makes me cry.
I'm in the process of witnessing my almost 17 year old mini poodle transition through the dying process and as heart breaking as it is we just have to wait for his body to give up. I'm learning hospice care for him and with having 11 more cats at home its something that I know someday I'd have to go through once again.
I just lost my pup after 14+ years. She was sick for the last few weeks. I was told to put her down but, every time I would think of "what ifs" I would take her in and she would suddenly start doing better after getting some meds. I can understand if folks just can't afford it but, if you can, it will weigh on you if you don't give your dog a fighting chance. With that said, you will always be left with uncertainty and guilt regardless of your decision. My dog ended up dyeing 3 days out of surgery of amputating her leg. She started vomiting and it never stopped. She also wouldn't eat. She died naturally in my home. Part of my guilt now is towards the Vet she had seen the same day now. Thinking they didn't do enough for her. In time, i'll realize that I did everything i could for her and i guess that's all that matters.
That's why I respect true and empathic vets like you, who have to deal with euthanasia on daily basis. I am not referring to vets who don't like animals. I honestly don't know how you can deal with that and still live a "normal" life. I wanted to be a vet, but I knew that I would just end up killing myself sooner or later. I can't deal that amount of pain and heartbreak. Thank you, and thanks to all the vets who love what they do and love animals, and help us pet owners making the right decisions.
@ kiko Interesting that you included vets who don't like animals in your comment. People don't realize that just like in any profession, the professional may not actually like people or animals in this case.Very much so. Soooooo many pet owners are not aware of this. It is scary to say the least to be one of the unaware and unknowing. Some just accept these vets as normal for their profession, maybe they don't have much a relationship with their own pets. Most are just taken advantage of for being ignorant, I don't mean stupid, I mean not knowing better. The consequences are almost high by the time they figure it out unfortunately. I've known of these types of vets and physicians too. I worked in the medical field for many years and saw it first hand. Those who knew of the nasty vet, made sure his name was well known. Why people still took their pets to him puzzles me. He killed a lot of animals unethically. He was known for that. *Let me make it clear this vet was NEVER my personal vet. I only knew who he was. He's long gone now.*
I will never understand a vet that would let a dog die just because the owner doesn't have the money if that vet can save their life. And yes, there are vets like that. If it's something routine then okay refuse to see the dog if the owner doesn't have the money but to just let a pet die? I couldn't live with myself. Vets like doctors deserved to be paid but money shouldn't be placed above saving their life! After one of my dogs had Kidney Failure she got better with daily fluid therapy for almost a year so when she got worse again I hoped she would get better again. I will NEVER forgive myself for not letting go of her two days sooner as those last two days her constant yelps in pain were so hard on me that I could literally hear her yelping for a long time after she was gone. It was so traumatic on me that for the first time in something like 30 years I would not get another dog until two years later. I had not even gone one day without a dog until then but my love for dogs I gave in and got another two years after she passed. I will NEVER wait again when I know they are in that much pain and nothing can help them. Some people don't realize they do feel pain! They just don't show it like we do until it's really bad. It's been one year since I lost my last dog that I got at 11 weeks old. She lived until 14 1/2 years old. I knew I was not going to let her suffer when it got where nothing helped her I was not going to let her have that kind of pain and instead I took the pain of letting go. I do not regret it at all even though there has been many days many tears so much sadness that all the joy left our home when she passed. 😥🐶💖 This time I was able to get another dog shortly after. Not to take her place no dog would ever take the place of any of my dogs. I just have enough love and a big enough heart to create another place for another dog.

There are many routine visits. MANY that they can require the money for which I also did say! I don't back down from what I wrote because some person like you has no compassion over a dying pet that could be saved. You are the cruel one that made it clear you are okay with pets dying if the owner doesn't have the money to pay for their care. There are vets that won't let a pet die, too, and they are the ones that are in the practice because of their genuine love for animals! There are many people that don't make enough money. It's sad and tragic if anyone commits suicide! You probably think it's okay for a doctor to let someone die, too, if they don't have the money to pay for medical care? SMH
It was hard enough for me to see my 12.5 year old Staffy being put to sleep a few hours ago. I could see how difficult it was for my vet too, and I can only imagine how many she's had to do. Even if I had a bottomless pit of money for the oncology department, she wouldn't have had a quality of life but no matter how pragmatic we are about these things, it's still so damn heartbreaking. Thank you for this info. Thank you for all the best choices you make day-to-day. A good, heart-felt true story.....My Dad was a compassionate, basic, farmer with 10 children, on an old, rustic farm. One year he brought 7 cows (slated for dog/cat food) from an auction house...off the block and to a safe home. Loved, healed, in their often barn where he "healed" them over a 3.5 (and more!) month period. Blinded, starved, hairless, parasite filled..... they all healed, and were incorporated into our 19 stantion milk barn. Keep faith, Doc, there are still more healers out here. I'm saddened (seriously bereft) for all we don't, can't, save.... and daily pray for souls to change their choices and behaviors. Stay true to who you are, take care of YOU, too, each day.
My Dad was cut from the same cloth. I grew up on a farm and Dad was forever bringing sick and injured farm animals, wildlife, lost animals, ... home to repair. I'm now 65 and doing the same damned thing. I keep trying to quit, really, but it's a habit that I have had all my life. Hopefully, someone else will take over. It's a hard and heart-ache filled job, but the rewards are more than gold. I'm poor, but somehow I seem to make ends meet. We CAN change the world for the better. I just can't understand why we don't. Yeah, it's all about the money.

It grows... with each healthy breath and heartbeat. Thank you for bringing the hurt and lost into your life. Others are watching, even when wer don't know who they are. God is in charge and in control. Might mean we still have pain and confusion, but it won't stop us from being firm and strong when making the right decisions and standing by them.
If your gonna put your pet to sleep ,stay with it. It's always depended on you, don't abandon it now. Just hold on to it as it passes on...it will be tough. The death does not happen imediately. It will tear your heart out. ,Been there done that. But I got two rescue dogs to take her place,that healed my ❤️. Matt
An animal is your responsibility. You go to the end with your pet. So many people just drop their animal off because they can't take the pain. I couldn't even say the words "I need to put my dog down" someone else had to talk for me. That animal is YOURS. You DO NOT abandon it. Take care of that animal right thru the end. You'll feel better knowing you did what needed to be done for your pet. I hope a lot of you will be with your pet when the time comes.
The place I went to was a vet. They put you i a nice room with an outdoor patio access. They tell you to take as much time as you want. They take the pet and put in an IV...when you are ready the vet comes and first gives a sedative then what ever it is that stops the heart. I held my baby close and talked to her and said my goodbye. Afterward the vet says take as much time as you need. The had a couch and 2 lazy boy chairs...it was nicely decorated. They let me bring my boy so he could be with us. I layed her on the carpet so he could smell her. She wil be cremated, I will get a box with her ashes. Her name will be on the box. They give you a paw print and a beautiful card where you can put a picture. I have my Mollie girl, now waiting for my Maggie😭
I was with my miniature poodle telling him I loved him until the peaceful ending. I cried like a baby but i had to be with him until the end. I don’t regret it.
We have a vet that has a special room with a couch and chair and an outdoor area wher you can spend time with your pet and hold them. They give a mild sedative first when you are ready. I have their ashes in a nice box with name and date and they give you a paw print. I'd rather have the dog.
In the evening the dog was put to sleep by vet. The owner took him to home, he was planing to bury him in the morning. To his surprise the dog woke up.
When I was a kid I had my best friend for 20 years. His kidneys gave out and I was talked into “ doing the humane thing”. This has haunted me for years. Numerous supernatural events and contacts assured me that the thousands of prayers and devotions helped him into the human realm. Our family is Tibetan Buddhist and has an extremely close family-like relationship with an esteemed very learned and Attained Rinpoche. We see each other 2-3 times weekly for 20 years. When our Japanese Akita was just one month old Rinpoche held him gently in his arms and recited many sacred prayers and Mantras. His teaching on the dying of pets is as follows; “ Your pet has a deep karmic connection with you. You love each other. This has gone on for many lifetimes. All sentient beings, ( that includes your pets because they have consciousness awareness and love) get confused when we die. This is the time when we need love and reassurance most. Letting a stranger execute your beloved pet fills them with feelings of abandonment fear rejection despair betrayal. It’s far better to hold them in your arms at the time of passing while you pray for them. “
Oh your beautiful doggie, Tulah is looking and listening! My dad had to put my girl, Dusty to sleep and my 13 y/o, 2 Lab girls (sisters) had kidney failure and it was suggested we help them to sleep. They were born together and lived together their whole lives. One was sicker than the other but they were both failing. One went to sleep immediately, the other took a little longer. It still breaks my heart even tho it's been so long ago. It certainly isn't easy. We buried them together in the mountains where their spirits can run free :(

Many people know right from wrong. Part of this good, GREAT, life (experience) is to explore and experience all emotions... your support in explaining and sharing (when we don't even know one another) is the magic of technology. Your heart is huge. Classes for pet ownership should be required. I teach some folks who don't want the lesson. Now they don't come to me with their animal "stories" 'cause I won't accept their BS. I give them the numbers to the no-kill shelters, foster care groups, and follow-up. Tough love can be compassionate, and I feel for what you must decide on a regular basis. Prayers coming your way.
Totally agree with you ❤️. I think people that are so easy to put to sleep their pets have never understood a proper connection to animals. My cat is old and is having kidney problems and arthritis. The vet told me that at some point I will need to put him to sleep. From that moment I just cry every time I remember that I will need to make such a decision. I love him so much, he also love me. He is really smart and loyal 😞
My brother took our family cat when he moved out -- he loved him so much. By the end, the cat was 22 years old. Half his ear fell off, he was blind and deaf, he was missing teeth, and looked like he crawled out of the crypt. Everyone would ask my brother, why he doesn't just put him down. He would reply that the cat still ate, purred, and loved to be cuddled, so he couldn't. He was a happy boy, no matter how he looked.
Our Cooper is almost 15 years old. We just invested $ 3400. For a complicated oral surgery. We are thankful that we could afford it He is healthy and enjoying his life out of pain. We live with the fact he's well into his senior years and dread the day we have to make that decision. So we enjoy every day we have with him.

Treatments are expensive and dont always work out, creating more suffering and hardship. Pet may live with treatment, but if owner cant feed/care for them afterwards (afford food etc due to large med bill), then how is that morally correct? Or animals being left by the roadside or abandoned when tenant moves on? At least the owner is trying to take care of it and ensure there is no future suffering. Vets may have a hard time with that but then the vet should take the pet and find the alternative for the animal if they feel that strongly. Owners being left without a choice create more suffering for the animal. I think the vet needs to make peace with that and let any guilt/regrets fall on the owner. There are too many abandoned and stray animals suffering thru neglect or abuse. The purpose of euthansia is to end suffering.. And just so many pets in need of homes, locked up in "shelters". There are still a lot of people who get a pet on a whim, cause its cute puppy/kitten but dont have the time to train or spend and are not fully appreciating the "forever home" idea, or their life circumstances change. All so sad, but worse if it is abandoned.. Then this poor pet has no where to go and its life is miserable - how is that right or fair? Better to go to sleep in loving, caring arms without pain and onto a better place. Why add more misery just through sheer existence because we have this idea a long life (measured by time vs. quality) is a good life. Not necessarily so. You cant force that owner to change their circumstance even if you want to send them away and be self-righteous about it. Just saying you wont euthanize doesnt change their situation and then left without a choice they may leave, walkaway from their responsibility or try a DIY (how horrible is that!). That, in my opinion is worse than painfree euthanasia. I think a vet needs to consider the future suffering of a pet who isnt euthanized or take over that responsibility. Better to give them the euthanol meds, so the pet at least doesnt suffer and let them live with their own decision. Im sure theyd think twice if they had to do it, but it is better a vet can perform that service and realize the animal will be in a better place than left to an owner with few choices. Its kind of like the whole pro-choice thing or right-to-die. So much suffering when it is not allowed or botched. Better to have a humane and safe choice. IF one feels that strongly then please step in and offer an alternative viable solution for the circunstance vs. just refusing to help in the basis of some kind of "moral high ground". I personally, would prefer to be euthanized than in pain or suffer from neglect/lack of attention, medical or otherwise. There has to be dignity and quality of life, even for animals. Forcing a miserable existence isnt the "moral high-ground".
I tried getting into the Vet field. Just completed my Vet Assistant training and landed a job working at the front desk. A man brought in a small kennel with maybe 5 or 6 little baby puppies in it. Handed it tome and said he had already talked to the Vet and he knows what I want, just take them to the back. When I found out later the reason they were there was to be PTS because they were "mismarked" I couldn't believe it. Left right then and there and never looked back. I'm sure MOST vets are not this way but I knew I could never professionally handle a situation like that again. On the other hand I have had 16 year old dogs that were ready and have had Vets cry right along side if me. Tough Profession to say the least. Glad you touched on this topic. Thanks

It’s one of the hardest thing in my life I’ve had to do. It haunts me almost every day. I still cry at the thought but my babies were very old and couldn’t move at all. I still believe my old neighbor poisoned them and started the progress. The vet agreed that they were suffering. They were 14 and 15
I have no issue with it if the pet is in pain. But just for it's a stay and no place to go no. I mean would you put a kid to sleep. Dogs or cats did not ask to be here.
So whats the option? Ditch it in the street? Thats plenty of pain and suffering right there, or to go into these rescue shelters and have psychological trauma with behavioural issues because they are so stressed vs. a compassionate pain-free option? People do that when they cant afford to care for an animal. Just saying they shouldnt own one isnt a solution. The animals suffering needs to be considered. Its not just about physical pain.
Thank you for your perspective. It opens up the human, emotional side to euthanasia. My husband and I have rescued as many animals as many years as we have been married and when the time comes to say goodbye to another, it never gets easier for us. It almost seems harder as we get older. We love our animals to pieces and try so very hard to give them the life they deserve. But once they're gone, the emotions flood in. The grieving is very real for our animals as they are our family. And with the 8 rescues we currently have, just knowing we'll be facing those times again is heartbreaking. I've had 3 dogs who passed away over time, and I never had to make that decision to put them to sleep. I have 2 still one is 9yrs old the other 8yrs old, and when there time is up, I hope they make that decision so I don't have too. On a sad note, my daughter had to make that sad decision back in 2011 and I went with her, it was one of the saddest thing I've ever been through, her furbaby feel a sleep in my arms! I have 2 elderly dogs, 15 and 17. It is a lot of work for me and frankly it costs a lot too. But I owe them my efforts because of all the years they have given me. I tell them that if there is still a glimmer of their quirky personalities left and they are not in pain then I will fight for them. Im exhausted but its just part of having a pet. They are our family. We would not put a loved one down just because they inconvenience us(if we could).

I'm glad you did an updated version of your original on euthanasia. No one ever wants to discuss it, it brings up the inevitable loss of our pets but it's necessary. You are what we want in in our vets. Truthfulness, honesty and compassion and knowing how it feels. Your own experiences. You feel. I honestly think veterinarians deal with the life and death decisions more on a daily basis than human physicians usually do. It just about killed my dad when he brought the vet out to put our dog to sleep at our house. I’ve never seen him cry until that day. She was a very good 🐕.
My cat had his teeth pulled out and now 2 years later still has stomatosis. The vet wanted me to put him down. I on the other hand knew he still had so much more life. With love and probiotics and a well rounded diet he has had way more good days than bad. Sometimes we as pet parents we know or pet better than the vet.
You’ve articulated a great truth. I’ve had cats and dogs who have died in the natural course, as well as those whom I’ve regretfully euthanized near the end of their terminal cancer cases. However, even the best vet cannot possibly know your pet as well as you do!
My dog was euthanized a few days ago and I feel guilty. To be honest I didn't want her to be, but my dad and brother said it was time. My dog was taking seizure medication every day for 3 years to prevent her from getting it, and she had a non-cancerous tumor on her lung. She still was eating, drinking, and walking but looked tired. I feel like we should have waited. I don't know if my dad wanted to end her suffering or just did it for his own convenience.
Had a vet do a home visit 2 weeks ago for my 15yr old chihuahua who was very poorly. Much kinder in his own home on my bed. I knew the day was coming. That morning he couldnt even swollow water properly. It was a heart breaking decision but it was the right decision. He passed away from sedation alone.😢 😢❤🐾🐾
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic. I know there are times when it's hard on the vet, but often times it's hard for the owner/parent to know when it's time to say goodbye to their fur baby. You sound like such a caring and thoughtful vet...I truly appreciate that!!!
You are so sweet!! My Vet just passed away about 3 weeks ago,, 56 years old!! I'm still so upset!! No one is saying what he died from!! I've had a dog walking/ pet sitting service for 25 years. So I totally understand all of this!!
We had to have my beloved dachshund euthanized a few days ago. He was almost 17 ,was deaf and blind. He was loved more than I have words to express it, but by golly he loved his grub. He stayed in our bed with us , even when we weren’t in the bed he was. He then stopped eating, then he stopped drinking. We hoped he would come around but didn’t. He started barking and whining, the weight melted off him and we knew it was time. Our vet is the best,and his assistant was wonderful to. It is the hardest thing I’ve ever done and am still grieving his loss, (crying as I type this) . If not for the patience and skill of our vet it would have been even harder. You Vets and animal nurses are truly doing God’s work when you minister to God’s creations to keep them healthy and when it’s time to ease their passing. They were my little girls and I love and miss all three more than I can say. I called them the three amigos because they would all run and play together. In my area it is the vets pushing euthanasia. I have had them insist I put down healthy cats who are positive for FIV. My dog became paralyzed in his back legs and after numerous doctors there was no diagnosis. I scheduled an appointment with the states teaching hospital. In the interim he vomited one night so I took him to a chain speciality/emergency clinic. He was there five days and all they could determine was a liver infection. He was seen by the cardiologist,internist and critical care doctor. They insisted I put him down. I had to argue with them every day. They insisted he had no quality of life entirely on the fact of his back legs. They admitted he was healthy otherwise. He ate and drank well and could still get around on his own. They insisted he walk and dropped him several times. They left him lying in his cage without moving him. His face mashed against the bars where he bit at them until he broke his teeth and bled everywhere. They charged so much that I had to reschedule his appointment at the teaching hospital. Within weeks he was dead. The necropsy revealed he had hemangiosarcoma everywhere. He bled out from his brain but it was in all his major organs, including his heart. This kind of incompetence and disregard is common in my city. Most the vets here graduate from the teaching university I was taking him to. They talk alike and act alike. Same phrases and attitude. I live in absolute terror at the thought of taking my babies to any of them.
My precious, Tula 13+ yrs had horrible cancer, but fir her last month, we did everything to fill her life with love and enjoyment. Her last hour was extraordinary, she "showed" me she was ready. Tula actually passed away in my arms after our vet administer "the shot." I loved this special companion. She was so much more than a family pet. She was sweetheart of the rodeo, forever in my heart...

I have great empathy for the pain you and other Veterinarians really live with in having the burden of that decision and actually doing that service for our society. I watched a documentary about a shelter that did not have a no kill policy. So when animals were dropped off, it was common knowledge that unless there was a chance for rescue, that critter would be put down. That task was put on a single individual in the shelter. A young woman, not even 30yrs old. The documentary followed a particular dog through the course of his stay till his time was up. It showed her quietly escort him to the room and the door closed. This was so traumatic for me to watch even though the actual euthanasia wasn’t shown. Spike is my 17yr old Male Maltese Buddy. He is now mostly blind but has some sight ability. The older he gets, the more I learn about compassion and love. My vet has just told me that Spike will let me know when it’s time. As long as I am able to care for him, I will. He sleeps with me. He has a water dish on the bed and has safety rails that prevent him from accidentally falling off the bed. He recently became lame and has a weakened Achilles’ tendon on one hind leg. I’m an RN and we did a Coban wrap which gave him support for that tendon to heal. We have a lot of stairs in our home so he gets carried out to potty several times a day and during the night if he needs. I have huge pads on the bed in case of accidents but those don’t happen often. This kind of love and devotion is well deserved for the love and companionship he has given us. I know the statistics with veterinarians and suicide. If you knew the joy and love these critters experience when they are separated from their little bodies and return to their creator, it would bring a peaceful smile to your face. When there are individuals that are so heartless that they would consider you professionals as animal garbage men, to clean up their inability to be responsible pet owners, try to remember that peace those critters feel returning to their creator in what is called Eternal Felicity (joy) in America there are doctors who have no problem with killing a human fetus in the womb, cutting up, slicing, sucking out every piece of that living child labeling it as Products of Conception. Those doctors are evil animals to me. Thank you for all you do. Please find peace and comfort in your calling of returning some of The Souls of God’s creations back to him.
People need to think about just how far they will go to ensure a dog has the best possible life before they get one. If you cannot commit to this financially or morally, don't get one.
What kills me inside is what is going through my friend's mind? He probably thinks he's just gonna go back home. I don't think you should be limited financially, it really sucks treatments are outrageously expensive. My friend departed 2 days ago, won't recover
just the thought of euthanasia is heartbreaking. i dont even know if i will have the strenght to make that ultimate decision. i have 2 dogs and both have their share of ailments which equals to a fair amount of expenditure but i am not counting. my dogs are the reason to keep me going and therefore i owe it to them to take care of them. that was the decision i made when i adoptef both, so euthanasia??? i dont know ... thats a tough one
1st GSD was 14 years 11 months and was paralyzed for the last 6 months from a degenerative back issue, he could only lay on one side and got terrible sores that i knew wouldn't heal. I thought making that decision was terrible. Till my 2nd GSD at 8 years and 1 week died on my couch in front of me of cancer. That was the most traumatic thing I have ever witnessed, I saw true fear in his eyes. I currently have 2 dogs, one 8 and one 6, I dread the day. Sometimes it's terrible being a human
Seeing them scared and not being able to help is what frightens me the most. That's why I euthanize them as best as I can before they suffer. It's so incredibly hard but we do it because we love them so much.
In my opinion, we should put ourselves in the shoes of the animals. If you have cancer, seizures, etc. Would you like to be euthanized? My dog suffered from seizures, she did quite well with medication. Euthanizing her never crossed my mind.
Only had to make that decision once. On my dog named Lint who developed mouth cancer at the age 16. It was a horrible decision. Of course I wanted to try everything I could to save him. Unfortunately the answer would have been remove his lower jaw. And at his age he would not survive the surgery. I kept him on meds till he no longer wanted to go for walks or eat. Then I took him in. And even with everything I wanted to try, and I did, I had guilt for nearly a year. Anyone who does not have feelings towards their pets needs to not be involved with any living being

Our first dog was an Akita. When he was only three two years old, his back leg had to be operated on. My animals are my Children. The vet had to put a rod in his leg. We did not care what the cost was. It cost us $2,500. If we did not agree to the operation, he would have to be put down. Yes, he was in a lot of pain, but he completely recovered. Three of my Akita's are in the Spirit World. I still cry!
I had my little poodle put to sleep because she was experiencing painful heart attacks. However, the death was shocking. She didn't just get sleeping and lie down. She fought it, opened her mouth wide, seemed to want air, and eventually died. It was horrifying to me. So, please tell us what's in that stuff and why my dear little dog fought it. Thank you.
I had to euthanize my cat the day before this video published. Someone abandoned their pit mixes on my road. One of my dogs is going into heat plus I have a bunch of free-range ducks and chicken. I believe that's why they stuck around the outskirts of my property. It's very common for people to dump their pets where I live. I've taken many to my vet, to the local humane society, and even found homes for some. I had been very busy and somehow my strictly inside cat who was my daughter's emotional support animal slipped out without me knowing. While out working with a few of my dogs I heard the commotion in the woods behind my house. There were the strays attacking my cat. My 5 month old LGDs went into full attack mode followed by my GSD/Rottie/Wolf hybrid Ragnar. The rest of my dogs chased the strays off into the woods but my cat was in shock. She attacked me when I tried to assess the damage. I rushed her to my vet of over 16 years but while nothing was broken her lungs were punctured and she was suffocating. My vet, being a small clinic here in the country, did not have the tools she needed to save her but they tried anyway. Sadly my beloved Buttercup was fading fast so I opted to have her euthanized so she wouldn't suffer anymore. Even though one could argue that it isn't my fault, all the animals under my care I am solely responsible for...

I'm more concern about Vets deciding euthanasia for healthy or stray dogs at a animal shelter. That's my main reason for not volunteering or donating to my city shelter. The aweful thought of scheduling the killing stray dogs because of limited space hurts me a lot.
I just had to euthanize my 18 1/2 year old kitty I am devastated, she was my everything it was the most difficult decision I've had to make her Vet is a wonderful gentleman and suggested we put her under he couldn't do anything more to keep her alive she was suffering towards the end and I was in denial thinking she would come around and get better. Pet's are family. I keep all of mine till the end. My cat wore diapers towards the end and was paralyzed for 2 month's and I still kept her and took care of her like a child. I keep them as long as they are eating and drinking and I know they aren't suffering. Can't imagine getting rid of a pet because I'm moving. Where I go they go. Ya that’s a good topic .. that would be a hard thing for a vet . I don’t agree with those people about asking a vet to put pet down because their moving . We have huge issues with this and over crowded shelters so then they just get put to sleep anyways I guess I would ask the people to sign over of the pet and I would foster them but that can be difficult too . I had to put 3 of my dogs down to sickness and old age but I had to rely on my vet for the answer to because was trying everything for my dog keep them going . My one wasn’t eating at all for months my other guy he couldn’t breathe anymore and the third one had some lung and heart issues . It’s a terrible thing to decide but my vets had made it so helpful.
I aggressively treated my elderly cats for CRF until I developed CRF myself. The guilt I feel now for making them endure that hell is almost unbearable.
I had to euthanize my 2 year old cat yesterday due to Bone Marrow Disease. I was told that treatment would not help with quality of life for very long and I feel extremely guilty for making that decision. I just hope he wasn't in any pain... I'm so lost without him.
We had to put our family dog down yesterday. It was probably the hardest decision of my life. I had my dog Roxy ever since I was four (I'm 21 now) and I can't remember what life was like without her. We asked the vet if it was the right decision and he said that it was. I can't imagine how someone could put their dog down because it was an inconvenience. The vet was super nice and compassionate to us during this difficult time and it really made me respect your industry.

I want to also say that we need to also think about what that pet owner may be going through. It is virtue shaming just because you can afford to get your pet the best medical care and are physically well enough to lift and carry a pet that may have mobility issues, or emotionally well enough to endure what it is taking to care for a pet who may need specific attention and care to stay alive - doesn't mean that everyone else can do the same - and doesn't mean they don't care about their pet. Think of an elderly person or a medically or emotionally or financially compromised person who may love their pet and who may have already been struggling for a long time to take the best care they can of their pet - and who can't or who are getting very close to not being able to do it anymore. Who can be found who will take and love and care for an elderly pet, one perhaps with behavioral or medical problems requiring specific care and a lot of money -? And even if a person in this position could find someone willing to take their pet - how can they trust that the person will really do all the pet needs, how can that person stand knowing their pet will miss them and wonder why they were given away and have to adjust to a new home, new people - how can they trust their pet will really be safe, be ok? So, do they then just keep going until they and their pet are on the street, or they become incapacitated and need care themselves - who takes care of the pet then? Or they die suddenly and the pet is then left alone with no one - We can't judge other people, we do it all the time, comparing them to ourselves, but we don't know what's going on for that person. To assume they all are uncaring, selfish, terrible people who just can't be bothered to care for their pet anymore - is to not be able to imagine other scenarios which are probably much more the norm.
My 16 year old beagle has some kidney disease, a heart murmur, arthritis and a large lipoma. He developed the lipoma late in life and he is just too old for that surgery. As long as he eats, drinks, gives and gets love and will still go outside (we help him) we will keep him comfortable. On good days he will demand food or to be carried to my bed. Neither of us are ready.
My sweet 18 yr old cat died in my arms, at home, naturally. She had many issues but I am forever grateful that we let her stay with us for as long as she could. And I know she was happy too.

A very hard topic. I do rescue and see many people dumping animals or they don't want to pay for surgery. Very sad if a vet bows to their wishes. Our group took in a cat with a urinary blockage..the vet kept the cat after the owners left it to be euthanized. He fixed the cat, called us and we found the cat a wonderful new home.
Sometimes I have seen vids of dogs that were turned over to shelters because of treatable conditions that a family cannot afford to take care of. I often wonder why some rescue organizations would be willing to take such animals and then rehome them after paying for care, but not help pet parents to pay vet bills instead. Just because someone cannot afford vet bills does not mean they do not love their animals. My dog had a seizure. She is an otherwise healthy young animal. I didn't rush her to the vet. She had no other symptoms. That is how I found this channel. Through research I found out that because there were used dryer sheets on my floor, and she played with one, that this probably caused it. Taking her to the vet would have been extremely expensive. They would have probably done an MRI, liver panels, etc etc etc, just to tell me that they cannot pinpoint a cause and we will have to wait and see if she has other seizures to diagnose her. I cannot afford that bill. It would be 1000s of dollars and there would be no answer. So I put her on MTC and CBD and I am eliminating all household chemicals from my home instead. So far she is seizure free. If she has more I will take her to the vet, but it will be extremely hard to pay for that on a fixed income. I don't think that makes me a jot less loving than a rich person that can easily throw money at a problem.
I just had to take my best friend in today to end her suffering. I fear I may have even waited too long, but couldn't bring myself to make this decision until it became absolutely clear her life had no quality and there was no way for her to recover. She had cancer my vet said wasn't treatable and was 16 years old. This was several months ago and she mostly behaved normally. She had lost an incredible amount of weight in the last few weeks despite eating and drinking normally, but in the last two days she completely stopped eating and drinking and didn't even seem to know where she was. She'd try to drink, but it was like she didn't remember how and would just tip her nose into the water. I'd hand feed her food or water and she'd try to drink or chew the food but spit it out. It was clear she was suffering. It broke my heart, but I knew it was the right choice. I'm still reeling over the loss. I was there with her until she took her last breath. I can't imagine choosing euthanasia for convenience.
My neighbor euthanized her dog but she waited till he at least had a shred of dignity. When he couldnt go potty on his own anymore he started acting very depressed and she knew it was time. She wanted him to pass still feeling like a true doggo. It was the same with my dog as well. He got an intreatable form of cancer and we let him ride it out. But one day he couldnt stand anymore. And after three days and him starting to clearly feel sad we knew it was time. No animal should be euthanized unless absolutely necessary and for the benefit of the animal. And honestly I dont think animals should be euthanized in general for just not having a home. Let that sucker be free. We have no right to tell any animal "I dont want you so you HAVE to die instead of living in the wild like your ancestors" that's just messed up to begin with.
It's been almost two years since I had to let my girl go and I still cry 💔 She was more of a friend than a pet. You hear of dogs being "man's best friend" but it doesn't really sink in until you have a wonderful dog.

I just lost my dog Bigfoot he passed away Monday morning a day after Easter Sunday he had aspirated into his lungs and had pneumonia and I was trying my best to save him with antibiotics and albuterol he was fourteen years old and had survived cancer for almost three years he had a slipped disc and pinched nerve and he lost about all of his nerves in his back my vet said that he was pretty much dead from half the way down and that's why he bloats up every time he eats anything he got to were he couldn't push out his bowel movement and I would have to give him a enema back to back to clean him out I miss him so much more than I know words to describe it's like a thousand bee stings to my heart.. he is on the left side of my profile picture and Arnold is on the right side he is a beagle and bigfoot is a pit bull mixed.. Arnold is ten years old and he is grieving for his big brother he was looking all over the house for him it tore me up and he doesn't want to eat anything unless he gets hungry enough I've been taking him out to eat when I go to the city almost every day and it seems to help him to get away from the house for a while my dogs are my life I'm extremely devoted dog daddy. I even order bigfoot a casket and outer burial vault I tried my best to put him away nice
God help my heart. I put my 7 year old fur baby down last June...ok so the last 3 days my 15 year old Vick rescue who is my life..I found him alone in the backyard trying to get away from 1 year old German ROTT and here I am crying my eyeballs out I hate to feel so murderous but it's really INSELFISH LOVE. BECAUSE OF HIS WONDERFUL VIDEO HE HELPED SOOTHED MY HEART. I LOVE THIS VET RIGHT HERE. DONT WATCH OTHER VIDEOS THIS VET IS THE REAL DEAL & HIS HEART IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE. 👌 THANK U MR.
