This “Enlightened” New World utopia isn’t turning out to be all it was cracked up to be. Society is disenchanting, but are the only alternatives hiding out in the hills or burying yourself in books? With an air of levity and a touch of humor, John Heers teaches how to examine the confusing New World by calling upon the mind and wisdom of oft-forgotten Old. Heavy Things, Lightly.

Just ran a youth festival in the UK on the subject of Philoxenia: the spiritual discipline of hospitality. Great that this theme is buzzing around in other places as well (I heard of another recent event in France on the same). Godspeed!

There is such a thing as race/ nation/ tribe as a symbolic cathegory. Just like there exist a cathegory for a cat or a dog. A cat can have three legs, but saying "cats have three legs" is wrong. Cats have four legs.

i usually ignore using race as a term just because it is way too general and arbitrary i could be wrong but i like using ethnos defined as language and lip passed through lineage applied to a time and place

It's why CRT is very dumb. My mom is jamaican my dad is italian american/austro hungarian ethnically. According to CRT my dad being white would be the oppressor and my mom the oppressed but the only slave holders in my family tree are on my mom's side! It's a very low resolution lense (race) to look at very important issues.

Fantastic conversation, but my taxonomical brain kind of expected definitions. What is a nation? What is a race?

At least for country, nation, people (I belief ethnos literally just means race and may just be conflated with "people") we can look to our God-bearing Elder Athanasios Mitilinaios: Elder Athanasios Mitlinaios: "By the way, your country is limited to a certain geography. But not a nation. The Greek country is limited to the south area of the Balkans. But the Greek nation has spread all over the earth U.S., Australia, Canada, South Africa, South America, Russia, Turkey. We are citizens of Greek descent, Greek nationals, even though we are also citizens of the government of the United States. So God is in direct control of every country and every nation. He commands his angels to watch the nations. Every country has its guardian angel. The nation of Israel had its guardian angel, Archangel Michael. We also know that David saw the Angel of the Greeks in a vision. And God selected one of these nations to be his home, to be his property. " Longer, from the Homilies of Elder Athanasios Mitilinaios (1927-2006) - sermon translated by Constantine Zalalas “13. On Mixed Marriages / Love Your Countrymen”, Now the question is, why must we love our people in a special way? God wants boundaries. All people are descendants of Adam and Eve... but God also created the family unit, and the family unit must have boundaries... if these boundaries become eliminated and strangers come in and out... then the family unit will soon self-destruct. In the same way our country serves as a macro-family, our extended family that God wants each country to have its own boundaries… …there's a tendency, however, especially in our times, to jump on the bandwagon of our world market, our world economy. To open our boundary boundaries to every product, every idea, every fashion from all over the world. A phenomenon of internationalism. But it is common knowledge that this unification of the entire world - the elimination of national boundaries, will be the work of the Antichrist. God's will is for different people to live in different countries. God wants boundaries. The Monument of Babel was a monument of vainglory. And it was supposed to serve as the reference point of all different nations, but our reference point as creations of God must be God. Everywhere we go, we should have this as our common point - our common reference point - as God, the Most High God. They didn't do this back then, so God says, Let us go down to them and confuse their tongues. Let Us - in the plural- shows, even in the Old Testament, God's multiplicity of Persons. One God, three Persons. So their languages were confused and they could not communicate. This sort of thing was restored, by the way, during Pentecost, where all nations understood the sermon of Peter. And this because the reference point of all these nationalities was no longer some monument but the Holy Spirit. Today, an Orthodox Christian can go to Russia, Greece, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, Georgia, and the common bond will be the church. The Divine Liturgy and the Sacraments, which are the same in Orthodoxy, regardless of what country you happen to find ourselves in. So Gods will is to divide the people of the earth in different countries with different governments and nationalities. This is the will of God. By the way, your country is limited to a certain geography. The Earth belongs to God. Everything belongs to God. But God selected one of these nations to serve His will. He wanted to train this nation accordingly, according to his will, to prepare these people to bring the Messiah through the failed talks. So God place boundaries on all nations reserved for himself. One nation. The nation of Israel. God did not show favoritism in doing this. He wanted to prepare one Nation for Christ to come. But let's see here what the Holy Spirit says to the people of Athens through Saint Paul. God created all people, all nations from one blood. We are men from one couple, Adam and Eve. And he determined the times set for them and the exact boundaries where they should live. So who sets boundaries? God does. And He sets the longevity of the nation's. God dictates how long a nation will survive. God says many times in the Old Testament, I will destroy these people - the Babylonians, the Assyrians, the Phoenicians. Many nations have disappeared. So God sets the longevity of each nation. God allowed the existence of the American nation two hundred some years ago. God is in complete control of all the movements of the nations.

I would like to hear discussion about 56:32 from Richard and other Orthodox historians, as well as from clergy. American Orthodox Christians don't have to agree on every nuance or political approach; however, I'm guessing there are some fundamentals-based on an EO worldview and even on doctrines-that we should know as they relate to our identity within the Church.

Simultaneously an interesting and wholly unsatisfying conversation. Is your solution to America's race problems that everyone becomes Orthodox? Yeah that sure would be nice wouldn't it. In the meantime however, we have to deal with reality as it actually is. Neither Jew nor Greek is not a statement about biology! God made us different, and those differences have serious consequences for us in the world. Pretending that White people and Black people are the same is false, and therefore not Orthodox. Obviously Richard touched on the truth of our differences but couched it so carefully that he didn't end up saying much that was actually useful. It's nice to virtue signal about how diverse your parish is but I know as a man from the south you damn well don't want to live in a black neighborhood. Does that make you evil or simply capable of pattern recognition?

Interesting. I wonder if Jesus would have avoided living in a black neighborhood because of simple pattern recognition? You're probably not a racist, but you're definitely not a Christian in my book.

@@witherfinger @cosimoidemedici8550 I don't know if I would have minded living in or near a virtuous black neighborhood in the south in the 1920's. I would have been terrified of living in an Italian neighborhood from the same time period. This has to do less with skin color and more to do with the degrading effect of organized crime and psychological warfare on individuals and communities, both black and otherwise. Not all black neighborhoods are demonically degraded, although many are. I would feel just as uncomfortable in a tattoo shop full of white people with satanic tattoos all over their bodies. If I walked into a Russian Orthodox church in Africa, I would feel comfortable. I would trust an African Orthodox priest to hear my confession and to serve the eucharist. I know this because I have met them and been in such churches. There is more to the binding power of the mysteries than you would think. And yes, the solution is that everyone becomes Orthodox.
@witherfinger
@witherfinger Месяц назад
@@consciousstream5036 You wouldn't have been horrified if you were Italian it isn't ABOUT skin colour, but people are different, cultures are different, and we can't fall into the modern trap that assumes we are all interchangeable economic units, i mean individuals. There ARE race problems in the states and anywhere that has pretended that multicultural society was a great idea. Very rarely have the regular people said this mind you, this has been an imposition from our rulers for quite some time. The moment you walk out of the Orthoodox church in Africa, I bet you'll feel a lot less comfortable. Because you probably aren't an African, and people that aren't African feel out of place in Africa, just like African's tend to feel out of place in Europe. For some reason our rulers have decided we must destroy our own civilization to make room for people who feel uncomfortable here. The solution would be that everyone becomes Orthodox, or Christian at the very least, if we lived in an ideal place. We do not

Off topic, forgive me, but. WHAT ABOUT...what about the G.O.C. in America? This. one Archbishop Gregory, located [I believe] in Denver, CO, not to be confused with the G.O.C. (Genuine Orthodox CHRISTIANS of Greece) and... in America, notably associated with Metropolitan Demetrius, who is in charged of its parishes in the Western Hemisphere. I wrote to the Metropolitan regarding Archbishop Gregory and received a serious, h mincing-no-words reply. I contacted the Metropolitan after something that A-bishop Gregory told me left me feeling unsettled to my core. I'm not even certain by whom Archbishop Gregory is ordained and wondered if either of you were aware of Gregory. I have no doubt but what Met. Demetrius is a disciple of Christ, so I DID take his reply to me to heart.
