The fact that he's paying for it all himself, makes this project so much better. Hes more inclined to take care of it knowing how expensive or how big of a pain everything is when it needs replaced.

great to see a father teaching his son the value of money, making him spend his money that he has earned and the satisfaction that brings rather than just buying everything for him. i would say he will be more likley to look after the truck more since he had to pay for the parts.

Huge props to you dad, paying your own way is the best way to teach your kids great lessons. Did that with my son, enjoyed building the car with him too. He paid for everything. When he broke it, he knew what tit was going to cost him to fix it. Also, Good for kids to see that even the best (you) make mistakes but it doesn’t stop you from doing it yourself. That will help him able to do anything he pits his mind to, but you knew that. I am so loving watching this.

It’s always great to see young people learning the value of earning and paying with their own money to buy the things they want. I’ve been teachings my grandsons that lesson. They work in my shop for a wage and buy the things they need. It’s fun to watch Paul working and even showing us the mistakes because we all make them. Michelle and Paul and family make the Fab Rats a fun family channel. I look forward to every show.

Back in my drinking days, I was putting a clutch in a friends old Chevy truck while Him and another friend drank many beers. The whole time he stood there spinning the throw out bearing on his finger. When I was "done" changing the clutch and ready for another beer, he handed me the new bearing. While they both had a good laugh, I proceeded to tear it apart to install the new bearing. Took me twenty minutes to get 'er done and back together. It wasn't 4 wheel drive, but it had a carrier bearing in the drive shaft. All part of the fun of keeping old stuff on the road. ;)

I rebuilt the 302 5.0L engine , painted the truck put a plow on it and made some good money with that truck. It was so rewarding rolling up to high school in a 25 year old fully restored antique pickup that I restored myself! That winch / bumper / light set up came out bad ass!

you are a great Dad. Reminds me of my Dad. I too had to buy the parts. worked at Chrysler, Desoto Dealer after High School. The flat head in my '51 Merc was on its way out. Bought a worn out 52 desoto Hemi and began buying parts. Had to wait nearly a year for a balanced 10/10 crank. Once we received the crank we (He) began the assemble. The block had been tanked, line bored, and all the stuff to make it live. The flat head was dead. And I had no more money to buy carbs. Had a six carb intake manifold. So it went back together with a single two barrel. That possible saved me a lot of tickets and gas. With an adapter the original three speed was used. Lost the internals, three times in six months. Don't slip your foot off the clutch to launch. Thank you for the memories.

Paul, I suggest watching Uncle Tony and Tom Mews talk about the problems with "new" flat tappet lifters for the old engines. Sure seems like you're experiencing the symptoms. Short version,most "new" lifters aren't new at all but remanned used. They are reboring and not using a correctly sized plunger so the lifter just collapses when running. This is true for ALL the suppliers, regardless of brand name. An exception "may" be Rhodes which are machined with the bleed lower in the body.
@fasttruckman
@fasttruckman 2 года назад
What in all my years of life I have never heard of lifters being rebuilt. I worked in the auto parts industry and in a engine machine shop in the 90's and never once was there a core requirement for lifter's and as far as I know there is now core requirement for lifter's to this day. Your "remanned" lifter theory is just B.S.. Now are there cheap Chinese lifter's out there yes. But there are also great quality lifter's out there,but are you willing to pay the price? In my younger day's of engine rebuilding Sealed Power lifter's were my go to lifter's I was born in 1967.Back in the 80's and 90's they were great lifter's and the last engine I rebuilt in 2019 a 1984 chevrolet 305 V8 for my C10 square body I used sealed power lifter's and I had zero problems with them. Another thing you need to add a zinc oil additive for older engines and their internal parts. Today's oils do not have the dino vitamins needed to protect engines made before the 90's.
@Ares-jx4ep
@Ares-jx4ep 2 года назад
@@fasttruckman Lets break down your rebuttal... Your "Auto parts and machine shop experience in the 1990 have absolutely zero bearing on the state of the auto parts industry in 2021. I' also not aware of a core charge on lifters. What I do know is hydraulic flat tappets haven't been used OEM in Cam in block V8's since the 1990's. That means the suppliers for those flat tappet bodies no longer exist. Unless you KNOW and can provide PROOF to Rebut Tom Mews contacts in the CURRENT industry... I'm giving his theory a lot more weight than yours. If you watched the Vid you would see that the FIRST thing Paul dumped into that BBC was ZINC ADDITIVE. Personally I hope the theory is wrong as I really want to use Rhodes in my 408 build.... but I'm keeping an open mind. How about we wait to see exactly what the failure was, all we know now is the pushrods are loose, be that from wiped lobes or collapsed lifters.
@madcratebuilder
@madcratebuilder 2 года назад
@@Ares-jx4ep They reman the newer roller hyd lifters but not the old school flat tappet lifters, it would not be cost effective. Ii recall new hyd lifters for the flat tappet chevy was just over 0.80 each in high volume lots 20 years ago.
@fasttruckman
@fasttruckman 2 года назад
@@Ares-jx4ep Let's break down your rebuttal.... 1)Tom Mews is claiming and saying all lifters made after 1993 are remanufactured. That is B.S. because you cannot remanufacture flat tappet lifter's.2) He did not state what yr his cam set was manufactured where it was manufactured and who manufactured the lifter's.3) Flat Tappet lifter's were made by the millions on a weekly basis up to when GM,Ford and Dodge stopped using them.The supply of American made Flat tappet lifter's should be endless.4) Buy your lifter and cam separately unless you know for sure you are buying a cam set manufactured pre 1990. 5) Did you not take into consideration that I rebuilt my 1984 C10 305 engine in 2019 using sealed power lifter's. 6) You youngster's or piss poor shade tree mechanic's constantly ignore the knowledge of the experienced.

Try pumping up the lifters first then adjust. So after start up and they pump up they will be in tolerance. If it works give a shout out. Good luck

Hey Paul, I am a retired GM drive-ability Tech and have assembled 1000+ engines. The processes that I did for S.B. Chevy was set #6 TDC and verify indicator on front of engine was correct. With #6 TDC set EX;2,5,6,7 IN;3,4,6,8 rotate P.R. with fingers while slowly tightening rocker till it stops rotating i.e. zero back lash then tighten 1 turn, then at #1TDC set the rest. Then rotate crank to desired timing you want at engine front and set distributor in and look at the primary pickup in distributor and align when locking it down. When you fire engine you will be within a degree of desired timing. With fuel and oil systems primed it should fire and run smooth with little crank time. Great channel, enjoy the content.

My dad always said if you never screw anything up you aren't trying. I had a similar situation to the throw out bearing years ago when I turned wrenches for a living. I went in early to do a big job on a Ram Truck. Intake gaskets, thermostat, full tune up, brakes, trans service etc. All gravy work. Right about the time everybody else was showing up at 8am I was finishing up and started the truck up to let the air bleed out of the cooling system. I hit the vending machine for some breakfast and came back and the temp was still low. I waited a few minutes and still no hit air from the heater. I stepped back to think about what could be wrong and noticed the thermostat and gasket was still on my tool box. Crap. 30 minutes later I started it up again and still couldn't get any heat out of the heater. You guessed it, I left the thermostat out AGAIN!. Lol The third time was a charm and I still managed to turn about 12 hours before 9:30 that day.

Great video, I like your attitude, nothing seems to upset you. Your children are blessed to have parents like you. If the world had more like you I think it would be a better place.

Black cats are great. My house cat got outside and came back pregnant. I had one of the kittens that was a black one and she was a smart cat. I gave her to a friend who gave her to a neighbor. The neighbor had to move, and couldn't take her with her, so I had to take her back. Momma cat wasn't happy. She said that "since she left home, she wasn't allowed back." I put her food on my desk, and the next time she expected it there. I wound up giving her to a cousin who had had back surgery, so she couldn't feed her on the floor. When I took her to my cousin's house, the cat already knew where her food was supposed to be. I like when a good plan comes together.

Me too. I got nothing but discouragement from my father over my first cars and I was completely in the dark with help from no one in the mid '90s working on my '70s Fords. His son is very fortunate to have a father like Paul.

During the weekend, I work on my truck too and eventually I make a mistake or two but I still enjoy working on my truck.. Watching Paul, Papa Dar, Paul's son and also Matt and his crew work on their projects keeps me motivated to keep going on my projects too.

My father taught me to change oil and a tire .every thing else learned in auto shop and by myself ..lots of headaches but learned in the 70s and 80s .by the end of the 80s worked in a auto shop .taught the only kid of mine that wanted to learn ,most all she wanted to know .she fixes her own car most of the time now. In a few years hope to still be able to teach my grandchildren. Great videos enjoy them

Many years ago I put cheap headers on my 74 Catalina and kept blowing gaskets. Victor Nitroseals fixed it up even though I had to double them up and use Permatex copper. I love the cheap header gaskets used but he had to have the interior lights. The things we do as kids. It will be great learning experience for your son.
